Ahem ... aren't you committed already m^e? Ogling at all the pretty ladies eh?Naughty naughty .Hmm... tough choice. Now let's see ... hell! I like them all B)I think I'll have to go with number 07. Number 04 is pretty cute too, but I'd prefer 07. -
Gentoo doesn't have dependency problems. Slackware does. I've experienced dependency hell quite a number of times with Slackware as I've used it for nearly a year. I've always wanted to try out SuSE, but I've only got one system . Right now, I've got lots of important things in Gentoo, so I'm not going to try another distro any time soon .

How To Play Mac Games On Windows And Vice-versa
abhiram replied to nhlgoalie2003's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Windows does use OpenGL. It depends on the game ... whether it is compatible with openGL or directX. Nope, in all probability, games won't work in Virtual PC. I've tried it out in VMWare, but they just wouldn't work. Your best bet would be, as Dhanesh said, to get the games with native Mac support. -
Livecd And Liveusb Slax Linux and MySlax Creator
abhiram replied to abhiram's topic in Websites and Web Designing
That's weird. I think the latest Slax-5.07b still has some bugs in it. Maybe you should try out with one of the older releases like 5.0.6? I haven't tried out with the modules as I needed the usb drive for something else and had to format it again. I'll try it again one of these days as soon as I find some time. -
Ubuntu Gives Cd Totaly Free Catch you Now
abhiram replied to Snails's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I did try out with a liveCD I borrowed from my friend. It was pretty good, in the sense that, without any configuration it detected my network card, dhcp, sound and everything. Pretty neat. I don't mean to say it's bad, it's just that I like to play around quite a bit with Linux and felt that Ubuntu just doesnt' give me enough freedom to do that . Hard to explain that. Gentoo without root?!! I dont' think so. I've been using Gentoo for the past 4-5 months and of course it has root. I don't mean logging into a Desktop Environment or Window Manager as root. Even if that's possible it's not advisable at all. Sometimes, when you've got to perform a lot of things in the console as root, it's quite convenient to not have to type 'sudo <command' all the time. Besides, if sudo is allowed, anyone will be able to do anything to my system at any time. Also, it will be even more irritiating if sudo has password enabled and you have to enter the password for every 'sudo' command you enter. Of course, some people prefer it that way, but I prefer the regular way of having a root shell login to perform adminstrative tasks. I guess in the end it just boils down to what you're used to. I know a couple of guys who stand by Ubuntu no matter what. But after using Gentoo, I won't be using anything else in a hurry . -
Hmmm.... quite an old post, surprising I missed it. If it really can run and install all Windows and Linux programs, it must be one mean OS. I think I'll give it a try sometime.
-
Yup, me too. Slackware was and still is my all time favorite distro. But, Gentoo is on a close second and it is my primary OS right now. Ever since I started using Gentoo, I've completely stopped going to Windows at all. Because the package management of Gentoo is the best I've ever seen. No dependency problems whatsoever .

Ubuntu Gives Cd Totaly Free Catch you Now
abhiram replied to Snails's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I think it really is very nice of Ubuntu to ship CDs for free anywhere in the world, but many people abuse it. Lots of people I know ordered these CDs just because they were offered for free even though none of them even use Linux. Maybe they should try to spend a bit towards telling people about the advantages of Linux rather than spending lots of money to ship free CDs. It's not that they ship one CD per registration or anything ... they'll even ship 20CDs if you ask them!I never bothered to order because I'm not particularly fond of Debian in any way. Although, I will say, the root thingy in Ubuntu is quite annoying. -
Blingo Search Engine A SE that gives away random prizes
abhiram replied to Andrew1405241517's topic in Search Engines
Too bad, doesn't apply to a whole lot of people here. It's only for people of the United States. Seriously, I wish people would atleast draw our attention to the rules. I once spent quite some time with an online contest (the kind of thing that you forward to friends and you might win an ipod or something) and finally realised that it was only for American and Canadian residents only. -
Sweet ... used it just now. I must say, the idea of saving all the conversations in the gmail account itself is really revolutionary. Now, I can look back on important conversations from any system anywhere in the world. Also, can use it in Linux perfectly. There's no problem with firefox in Linux at all .

Wow ... this is the first time I've come across something like this. Sounds very interesting. But unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to do that with my 160GB harddisk as it's got stuff that's been accumulated carefully over a year and a half .This method of using a swap partition looks similar to Linux. Does it really give a huge improvement in Windows performance?

Ibm To Unveil 4-5 Ghz Power6 Processor
abhiram replied to miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Oh ok. Thanks for clearing that up Yordan. You know, after reading the first half of your post, I was kinda thinking "I gotta get me one of these", then I read what you said at the end .So, the PPCs are used mostly for commercial applications that are heavily loaded. That's really neat. I wonder if our univ has any of these systems installed on campus. I'll go check them out when I have time. -
[beta] Google Toolbar V4 new features
abhiram replied to sparx's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Never needed the google toolbar. Did have it once for firefox, but firefox already had all the functionality that I needed and the google bar was just a extra waste of screen space. i don't know how useful this one will be. Of course they've added some features, but they aren't things that I require frequently. -
Scientists Believe They've Found Cure For Aids
abhiram replied to miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Amen to that. I've heard several times and also read in the newspaper over the years about 'cures' to AIDS, but nothing ever materialised. I hope this time it's the real deal. Too late ... the media's hyped it already. I guess it really is too early to decide anything yet. We'll just have to wait and see. -
Ibm To Unveil 4-5 Ghz Power6 Processor
abhiram replied to miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG's topic in Websites and Web Designing
You mean to say they've got a 4-5GHz processor and I can't even play games on it?!! Then what's the point? :)What OS does a PPC use? I know there are Linux versions ported to PPC, but does IBM have it's own OS? -

Ibm To Unveil 4-5 Ghz Power6 Processor
abhiram replied to miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Dam! Wish I could have one of those babies. Wonder how it would perform with HL2 or Doom3. Maybe a graphics card itself won't be required anymore . -
Really cool, you could fool anyone with those pics. I wouldn't have guessed any of them other than the sign thing and the water fountain. The fountain came out real well, but only there is not stream of water in the basin draining out. Elementary Dear Watson .

Need Help With MySQL Compilation And Install
abhiram replied to Divya1405241516's topic in Programming
Well, after installing mysql, try typing the following in a terminal as a regular user (not root): mysql -u root -p and it should prompt you for the password at which you just press 'enter' since, you haven't set the password yet (you better set it if you are gonna make your system accessible to the internet. If it's just for learning's sake, it's not really required). If you're getting an error, that means the mysql service hasn't been started. To start it, what I use is: /etc/init.d/mysql start which is to be typed as root. In many distros, the scripts are in /etc/init.d, but it might be in other places also like /etc/rc.d. Once the service starts successfully, try connecting to it again using the first bit of code I've shown above. Hope this helps. -
All New Gmail Chats Feature
abhiram replied to miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG's topic in Websites and Web Designing
This is really cool. I wonder how google is able to make such really neat improvements in their services. I mean, you'd think that since Yahoo! and MSN have been around much longer than Google, they'd have shown some improvements in their features. Google must really be having some big brains working for it. GTalk in a browser will be great since I'm in Linux and can't use GTalk. It'll be just like Meebo. For those who don't know what Meebo is, it's a webpage that lets you login directly to yahoo messenger, msn, icq directly in a browser window. It works just like your regular messenger client. But is this leading somewhere else? No one puts a whole lot of effort just to give something out for free. Are they gonna start charging us all of a sudden? //edit: My bad ... Meebo already allows you to login to GTalk.
