  1. I'm running an ATI radeon x600 myself, but recently I've been thinking about getting a new video card. The x600 just doesn't quite do it when I try to run Battlefield 2 and Call of Duty 2 under the 'high details' mode. And usually, for 1st person shooting games you want as many fps can you can get so I have the game details on low atm.But heck, I'm just a graphics fan - it's eye candy after all. So any recommendations? I want to try one of the nVidia cards, but haven't looked at their stuff lately. Looking for something mid-price range, thx.
  2. I'm all for it, although the techology is far from begin perfected - preventing it is greater cost for the medical advancement. Recently, a South Korea scientist perfected the techology for cloning a dog. For those of you who have little knowledge in this area, cloning dogs is a extremely painful and difficult process. The article I was reading can be found here from Time magazine: Time article I actually bought the magazine and read the hard copy, so the contents are a little different. It was listed as the most amazing invention of 2005. And now, his lab is getting barraged by the media about ethics and the consequences of his research. The way I see it - it may be unethical to use humans in live experimentation for the sake of medical science. However, does banning such research stop human's endless thirst of knowledge? Either way, this research will continune undoubtly, it's just if we'll ever hear about it on the news. And what if one day the research is completed and stem cells are used as cures for extensive list of diseases related to spinal injuries. Would you think that the people who once voted against stem cell research will kill themselves before using the techology to save themselves? I think not... It's just a matter how the world perceieve ethnics. Eventually, that will all change. Just because humans have an evolved sense of morality doesn't give them the right to place judgement on another human's progress.
  3. I think IPods are a waste of time, no offence to all those IPods owners out there. The newest IPod comes with 60gigs? Come on, who's really going to go through 60 gigs of music or videos in a day anyways? Unless you spend like half your week travelling and a portable media player is absolutly necessary for entertainment purposes, I just don't think an average person can use that kind of capacity. The other thing that I don't like about IPods are the batteries. Its built in and after so many charge cycles, the battery loses effectiveness and although there are third-party battery replacements, it isn't good as the original. (Plus changing the thing is a pain)Last of all, everyone has one - just another one of those trend things that I can never get used to. Don't get me wrong, I love gadgets and techy stuff, but the IPod isn't one of them. Seems to me 6 out of 10 people have one just cause it's the "IN" thing to have.
  4. most people who actually know something about computers think that people who open these types of emails are stupid, yet at one point in time or another we all were novices and might have made the same mistake. Although I must say that anyone who isn't running a realtime anti-virus scanner and some sort of anti-spyware program needs to have their heads examined. For the most part people who initally send these types of emails out hope that they catch some unknowing kid, and not an adult, since most kids who don't know any better will panic and open the email. This is the basis of any social engeneering hack attempt.Any real hacker worth his/her salt knows that even the best computer hacker/cracker is nothing without some social engeneering skills. Even if your not good with people there are other ways to pull it off, which I'm not gonna get into. Suffice to say that a good paper shredder comes in very handy. For the most part the general script kiddie isn't what you have to be worried about, the ones you should really be worried about are the "cheap internet" companies, you want to talk about social engeneering and information gathering man they take the cake. These mass mailers are, for the most part, just annoying. The best suggestion to everyone out there...keep your anit-virus/anti-spyware programs up to date and lets have a few more laughs at these script kiddies expense.
  5. Here is a link to a webpage that I use when I need a reference guide to how to properly use and modify .htaccess files, and how to do soproperly. Here is the link. That document gives very detail information on how to properly use .htaccess files. Hope it helps...
  6. also if your trying to do multiple searches or trying to jump from one link to another to quickly the system will kick back that or similar error messages. I think the reason for that is a restriction on how many searchs or link click you can make a second to keep the spam bots at bay, as well as a way to keep resource usage undercontrol.
  7. I used to use FP to upload sites that I designed and edited directly on the server, however now that I use Dreamweaver I miss that option. Now I download each page, and its dependents, and edit on my own computer then upload the same to view and then download and edit some more if necessary. Then again since I am now working with PHP and don't have the proper server software installed on my computer I would have to do that anyways. I now use FTP to upload and download by the way.
  8. That seems a bit odd...now what type of message do you get when you try to access/view it. Do you get a 404/440 message or a "opperation timed out" message?
  9. Got everything working finally I would like to thank everyone that helped me out on this step of my current project it was greatly appreciated. Next I'm gonna have to see about a couple of good templets for both the Mambo CMS and the SMF so that they look like they belong together seamlessly. But I'll leave that for another day....
  10. ok I can't seem to get it uninstalled, how would I go about uninstalling it manualy when it won't let me delete the directories. When I try to it tells me that I can't directly access the /component/com_smf/ directory. Other then that everything seems to be ok.
  11. well to be honest I don't know much about resources in the way of directing you in how to go about designing a CMS but from personal experiance and knowing people that have used multiple CMS's I have found that Mambo/Joomla is a "very simple" CMS but also very powerful. I am currently using it and although I'm having a bit of a problem, of my own creation by the way, it has been simple to install and learn how to work with. Hope this has been helpful if not....sorry.
  12. well I found a good bridge at that link but now that I have it installed I had a parsing error so I uninstalled it cause I think I did the install wrong and then went back to install it but now it is saying that the directory that the componant is trying to install to is in use by another component and I can't delete the directory's in the admin/component or /component/ directories manualy, tells me direct access denied. Even when I try to delete through the cpanel file manager.Anyone know how I can fix this problem without having to reinstall mambo? I would hate to have to start from the ground up again. Thanks in advance for all the help and thanks to those that have already helped me out.
  13. Just from my personal experiance, with SMF, when reinstalling the Forum software, you have to start from the ground up. Personally I always put my forum software in its own directory for such occasions. As for the hacks, they have to be deleted and reinstalled one by one to the new forum, a bit teadious but I haven't been able to find a way to keep them intact when doing a reinstall.
  14. Ok I'm new to Mambo and want to put up my SMF Forum on my new site and need help coming up with a "wrapped" version of SMF and then a good bridge for it to Mambo and help getting it all done/setup. If anyone could help me with this I would be very grateful.
  15. spybot is a great program to use, and its free, to get rid of spyware, malware, etc also it has an imune system as-well-as a host program blocker and on top of all that it has its Tea Timer program that will help keep everything the way you want it.Spy Sweeper is great since it has a "real time" scanner, like auto protect on a lot of the newest Anit-virus programs like norton and mcafee, that scans all incoming web data to see if it is a "known" spyware or malware program or whatever.spyware and the rest can "hijack" your internet connection and allow others to access your system without your knowledge, track your internet useage, and otherwise annoy you by slowing down your system and making gaming virtually impossable. For the most part you can remove most of the spyware that you get but sometimes so much damage has been done that a full system restore is necessary due to the fact that registry damage can be done, whether intenionally or not, by spyware and the rest.I would definetly suggest that anyone who has a internet connection use a spyware removal program. If you don't wanna pay for one then I'd suggest Spybot S&D, learn how to use it in advanced mode. If you don't want to learn how to do anything beyond installation and clicking to update or click to do system scan then I would suggest paying for Spy Sweeper.
  16. As I have said in other posts I have made in reguards to my personal view point on Xisto....This Place Rocks! I have worked with many different hosting services both webpage hosts like Angelfire and other Webservice hosts like Asta and I have to say, beyond a resonable doubt, that I have not found any other host that offers everything that Asta does, or should I say delivers. Many have tried to do what Asta has done but none have succeded. The features that are available here are fantastic, the uptime is incredible for free hosting, and the comunity...the community is amazing. The members here are nice, at times a bit outspoken but still composed..lol. Also the Admins and Mods are always showing up and doing their jobs as well as just visiting, many forum based hosts have admins that think and say they are better then everyone else and in doing so abuse their "powers" here they help everyone out, joke around, and do their job at the same time.I hope that the rest of the Hosts out there take a que from Asta and do it right, cause I have to say IMO this is how it should be done.Keep up the good work everyone and lets keep this place alive and kicking....
  17. Cool Fantastico is back...for a bit after the migration it was not available...now it is sweet...wish it had been there when I did my Mambo install it would have made it a lot easier...but I learned a few things when I did the manual install so I think I came out better for it....
  18. cyborgxxi, we all have to start somewhere so don't jump in over your head like I have man...lol. Currently I'm working on a Sun box that I want to put up with Solaris 10 on it, I've just totally trashed my website and installed Mambo and realized that I have no idea what I'm doing...lol...one step at a time and you'll learn everything you want over time....
  19. techocian: Good point possibly setting up the credit system to cap unhosted members at 30-40 credits would be a good thing but...at that point I would think that the credit system might have to be revamped, but since I haven't a clue as to the code opaque has written to do this I can't say for sure.Although I must say that the system we have now works so why revamp it...The simple fact is that this is how the credit system works, all of us who are currently hosted have delt with it, and there are a few threads that have been put up and the subject discussed in it. I've just gott'n back to a "real" job and don't have the time to post like I used to so now I'm going to designate a couple of hours on the weekend to do posting if I can or I'm gonna stick with the great community, and the Xisto family and go to their paid service with Xisto - Web Hosting.Oh and to those that say claim "unfair" that word in its self explains life in general. I hate to sound chided and jaded but systems need to be in place to keep honest people honest and weed out the ones that are there to take advantage.
  20. YudzzYno prob man I know how it goes...I started out with just hardware and system buildups myself...now I'm branching out to OS's, like Linux/Unix and also Solaris 10 (yes I know its a flavor of unix but its one I'm focusing on right now). Also I'm trying to learn PHP, Java, and C#...whew I'm busy in my down time from work...and I try to get some gaming in on BF2, StarCraft, Guild Wars and visit with friends...ok now I know I'm a Techno Geek...lol
  21. ok this isn't a request for a tutorial...cause it would be like asking for someone to write me an instruction/teaching book for free...lol...unless someone really feels like doing so...lol. What I am asking for is a couple of book titles that would be good for a beginer to get so as to be able to have a good referance for this OS.Thanks in advance
  22. I would have to agree with getting a book...I've been learning the hard way and giving the good people here on Xisto a real head ache at times I'm sure...especially Vujsa, who I must say has great patients when helping me. (Bows in the Great Vujsa's direction most humbly)People around here can help with pointers and possibly pointing you in the right direction, which they have with some very good book titles, and I'm sure they will undoubtably be helping you in the future should you need it. This is a great, and understanding, community.Hope to see ya back....
  23. I would agree to that, but on the other side, it would be pretty hard to be optimistic when you do become infected. How would it feel to be a walking time bomb? I am pretty sure I wouldn't feel too great either if I was put in that situation *although I wouldn't go around infecting everyone*. I guess some people become very negative and it is hard for the to accept it (especially when they have contracted the virus by accident). HIV in a biological sense is a very sucessful virus in nature. It stays inside the host for as long as possible without killing it, therefore allowing the host to spread the disease to as many individuals as possible even without the host knowing it *until late symptoms surfaces*. I believe most of the HIV carriers aren't even aware of the fact that they are spreading the disease, and this is due to the fact that the virus is fairly difficult to detect other than a blood test. Honestly speaking, who is going to have their blood tested on a regular basis? I have to admit, as I'm one of the people who fall ill easily, I've been hospitalized twice in the last four years (for about a week). Other than those visits to the hospital, I didn't have my blood checked on a regular basis. So, who is going to deliberatly going to have their blood screened after having sex with a different partner? I know I wouldn't. The point is, a lot of HIV carriers don't know that they are the ones spreading the disease, until they fall ill from it (which is pretty late). Think of the bright side, death is a natural side effect of life. And if it wasn't for diseases like Cancer and Aids, the world would have long been over-populated and we would be facing different and more difficult problems instead.
  24. Vujsa good explanation as usual but if I may I'd like to make a suggestion here.WUSIWYG editors are great, and if your on a Server with FrontPage extentions and the rest of the stuff FrontPage needs to do its thing then it is a halfway decent editor to start with...IMHO. Its how I started out with form building and what not, but before anyone starts a good natured discussion over its many weaknesses and dirty code, please let me state that no matter what WYSIWYG editor you may or may not chose to use never forget that you should do your best to learn how to code on your own, nothing beats having a binder full of notes and a good knowledge base since there are certain things that no WYSIWYG editor can do.Now that Webot entery is just a place holder so that you can enter your own script to be able to send/save the contents of the feild as you see fit. Publisher is giving you the basic code and is letting you know where to put in the code/script that you need to be able to complete what your trying to do.Vujsa and Guy have put up a couple of very good links where you can find and research the scripts you need. Good luck and hope your able to get your form working. Please let us know.
  25. ok the first question I would have to ask in able to help you is:Are you using a CMS and if so which one, or are you just writing all the PHP/HTML/XML/etc yourself? After getting the answer to that question I would then go with Sarah81's suggestion of changing to a specific percentages rather then locked percentages or locked pixel settings due to the fact that different people use different resolution settings on their computers. The only problem with helping you out is that it looks like your using a CMS and as such you might have to reset your CSS which might be a problem.
