  1. Yea, poratability and lack of wires is really the main advantages, as well as being able to add new computers to the network without having to cable them into the router. Unfortunately this is the exact advantage for hackers :lol:Cost wise its hard to say which would be better... wired is a cheaper router and cards but if you need alot of cable it can add up to around the same price. Plus alot of routers are starting to just be both wired/wireless now and their pricess are always dropping and there are often good sales.
  2. Compared to the general net population you've learned alot Good to see you want to learn more though and you're right, this is a great place for help. I know I've gotten help on a handful of somewhat obscure things since I've joined and didn't really expect anyone to be able to help... but alas they did.Welcome to the forums and enjoy your stay!Oh, and poker DOES rule... even though I lost a "bit" of money this past weekend because of it
  3. If you have been sreaching for 2 days and can't find it, I would assume it doesn't exist in a linux compatible version. Even though you said not to, I'd suggest just using wine Obviouly you'd really like to use this software if you've looked for 2 days, so instead of searching for another day just spend a few minutes figuring out wine and voila. The software looks fairly striaghtforward on their site so I assume it would be emulated without any problems.
  4. Well firstly... I think you should realize that having a framerate that high your eye won't notice a variance of a tenth of a frame. Secondly that small of a skip could be attributed to various things... none of which you should care about haha. Seriously I just can't even imagine why it would matter. I assume it's just the game engine and/or the method they use for displaying the fps is bugged (unless you have that weird system that manages to literally be constantly hovering JUST below the sweet 100fps mark). Regardless... I'd say don't are. If the changing numbers annoy you... net_graph 0
  5. It appears you'll need to wait for a bit My supervisors supervisor is returning from a long leave tomorrow or the next day and everything is getting shuffled up. Basically we aren't sure when exactly we'll get to continue work on this aprticular project, but we're hoping we'll just continue with it immediately so if so I'll let you know what we come up with for sure.I KNOW its possible using some pointer trick, I just suck with pointers and don't have a clue how you would go about pulling it off. I tried a few little things that would logically work but the implementation was beyond my abilities or simply not within the actual functionality of pointers (thats my nice way of saying I thought up a broken idea haha)
  6. Currently I mostly just use Forecast Fox, gmail notifier, bugmenot, tab clicking options (lets you choose different tab options based on actions), and I have a couple at home for making better formatting for html source/css viewing but I forget their names... I used to use tonnes of extensions but I've toned it down alot since then... I always just ended up getting pissed every time they update FF and my extensions broke for awhileEdit - I forgot, here I use "Beer o'clock" as well haha. Just a fun little extension that, as you get closer to beer oclock (the end of the day on friday usually) it pops up funny little messages like "5 errors to find until beer oclock!". Its pointless but fun hehe
  7. I've officially switched back to kde I had been using gnome for a long time but felt like shaking things up so when I switched to a new distro I switched to kde as well. I still use gnome./flux/etc on occasion but I think I'm going to use kde as my primary. It's insanely responsive on my system and usually looks a little flashier then gnome without losing any performance.Frankly though both are great choices obviously so it's really up to personal preferance. Trying both and picking the one you enjoy using day-to-day more is the only right choice.
  8. I have it for the PC but haven't had much of a chance to play it yet. The reviews I've read say it's pretty good as a game, but drops the ball a bit on handling to Godfather storyline, but it's still fun to play. I played through the tutorial missions and it seems pretty decent except the controls (on the pc) feel a bit loose. My bud has it on the xbox and said it was alot of fun and that the controls were pretty good. I think it was designed with consoles in mind and the pc port is a little rushed. Regardless I'd say try it out, anything Godfather related has to be awesome.
  9. Seems like it could theoretically become a pretty interesting place. I know I hit links off search engines to expert-exchange all the f*%$ing time only to realize they have the EXACT problem I am having, but the answer is hidden behind a paid registration If this actually takes off it could be really awesome.
  10. Ever since I've learned of Knoppix back a couple years ago I've always kept a disk handy... I've never really 'needed' to use it on my own system but it's been helpful on some friends systems when they break their everything and call me and expect me to be able to wave my hands and voila! All better.Another side effect of that type of sit (helping friends usin it) is that when they say "Hey, that doesn't look like windows usually does..." you can blow their minds :lol:But yea, many others have good live cds now too, but knoppix is still one of my favs. I also keep one of the security specific versions lieing around in case I ever need some... 'tools'... that are less common on live cds haha.
  11. Seems really interesting, in theory, but we'll have to wait and see how well they implement it. Not to imply that microsoft has ever had a net service be less then optimal due to underestimating the strain that would be put on it *coughhotmailcough* but it could happen. But yes, it'll be something to keep an eye out for
  12. I too use open office 90% of the time, I only use M$ Office on campus computers and when I too need to check formatting for submitting work in M$ filetypes.I must add though, it shouldn't be shocking that they would say something like this... I mean come on. If they were asked about OO.o and they replied "Actually it does everything Office does... AND FOR FREE!!!" It wouldn't make much business sense They won't exactly sell alot of copies of an expensive program suite by telling people there is a great free alternative haha.
  13. I also reccomend Ubuntu. I used it at home for a good year or so (about 50/50 time spent between it and windows) and use it at work currently as my sole OS. I use a dif distro of linux at home now, but only because I wanted one that was a little deeper to learn some things with. For a beginning, I've never seen one I liked as much as Ubuntu. When I started out with linux I tried Redhat, Mandrake, Suse, etc and they all were solid but none felt like an easy to jump into solution. My main problem was always either hardware detection or installation problems (dependencies hate me). Ubuntu solves both of these as it has some of the best auto-hardware detection so most if not all hardware works perfectly as soon as you install the OS, as well as it uses a system called 'apt' to obtain and install most software. This allowed you to search and select software and just hit "install" and it does everything else. Simple. Finally, the community. https://ubuntuforums.org/ is an awesome place with great people. A search will find the answers to your problems 9/10 times. If not, make a topic and you'll find helpful epople ready to get you through your tought spot. People at that forum even created the now well known "atuomatix". Basically it lets you run a script that takes a fresh install of ubuntu and installs alot fo the things that would simply take time to hunt down for new users (installs media players, firefox plugins, etc). So yes, I reccomend getting ubuntu. Install it, run automatix if it seems like you would want any of the software it installs (the new version lets you pick and choose what to install) and finally explore the forums as there is alot of information there to help a budding ubuntu-er. GOod luck, and enjoy linux.
  14. Using that test:Gross Speed - 86WPMErrors - 1Net Speed 85WPMAccuracy 98%Better then I expected since I was using some retardo keyboard since this computer was having "issues" with the website haha.
  15. That is to imply we don't all have tracking and recorded devices implanted beneath our skin upon birth....
  16. Forgot I had even posted this here haha But since I posted that, I tried looking into whether or not there was a way to use the STl's containers for this, and it appeared not. So I looked into generic container options and found out about Boost.Boost.org is awesome. It's basically this group (some members of which are from the standards group that contorl the STL apparently) that have "almost" production ready STL libraries, but aren't quite there yet for whatever reason. So I installed these as boost has a "Boost::any" container that lets you generically store any datatype and recast as needed. Now, this works great for a vector where one element is an int, another a string, another a float, another a char, another a class made by me... but some huge problems show up whenever I try use a class I made that has a filestream in it, OR if I try to store a template initiated class in it. Lalas it spits out such a huge error report it just confuses the hell out of me and I can't even begin to figure out if its solveable. Any help on the web I found implied it can't handle these types of things. Ah well.So now me and my supervisor have basically decided to figure out a different approach to the problem, he claims to have some "idea" haha, just not sure how he'll want to implement it yet. Going to meet about it later probably actually, if we come up with a useable workaround for this problem I'll post it up just for curiosities sake. Thanks for the suggestion though
  17. You can buy pc notebook/laptops that are the same size/ portability as macs, you just can't get any stuff designed for desktop replacements, but back to the topic...I think this could be good if they actually implement it well. As mentioned if it's super loud or heavy or hot, it simply wouldn't be viable in a portability based notebook. However, if it's actually decent on those points, it could be nice. I wouldn't mind having a notebook with enough storage to hold a handful of movies for long trips so I wouldn't need to bring disks along all the time. I wouldn't use it for my primary storage solutions either, but it could be nice. Then again I'm more interested in the ~40gig flash drives whatever company made to try and replace notebook HD's with. Super fast/quiet/energy efficient/etc. Regardless, it's always cool seeing companies innovating and pushing our technologies furthur.
  18. It's been awhile since I took one of those typing tests but I think it's usually around 70, although when I'm typing stuff from my head it's usually a fair bit higher (I'd guess about 90+) then when I'm re-typing something I'm reading(like those tests are). At my last job everyone said I typed really fast and a few friends have commented but otherwise I haven't had anyone fuss over it... then again I'm in computer science so we all type at varying speeds and see people typing all the time so, likely you'd need to be pushing 150 before anyone would take notice haha.
  19. Haha they are a fair ways away from making chips that can 'upgrade' us, but I love that was where everyones mind seemed to run to hehe For some reason it seems to me like it would be hard for them to do more then 'replace' or 'repair' things with these chips, rather then actually ever 'upgrade' us... I mean there would assumedly be massive psychological issues with going from our current mental capacity to some exceptionally greater one, be it intelligence, mental response time, memory, etc. Seems like it would be something so foreign that we'd have a hard time adjusting. That having been said I hope they keep researching into this. I'm sure the possibilities are endless at least from a mental ailment reparation point of view. It would be amazing if they could start fixing neurological disorders by replacing the damaged or ill part of the brain with the appropriately designed chip...But yea, even if they get this tech up and running in the near future I can't see it being anytime soon that it starts having interactive qualities from our concious point of view, just moreso working together behind the scenes.
  20. It's not like they are trying to hide the fact that it has a mic in it, that is one of the selling points so they'd make sure everyone considering buying it knew about it. Nice big letters on the packaging and whatnot. Personally I'd have litle used for one and would never give up my nice mouse for it, but I'm sure it could be used for some good pranks heh.
  21. Kind of playing off Transcendum's thing about knowing an actors first name but not last, alot of time's if I need to google for a phrase (more in research type queries then a quick reference) I may not know the full term, a good search term, or even the exact spelling for more complex words/phrases and this would be a more intuitive way of quickly realizing if you have the wrong spelling then searching and getting a "Did you mean ____?". While that feature is often accurate, sometimes its way off heh, good to have options.Plus it's non obtrusive so when you know your search topic, it is irrelevant, but when you need a little extra help it's right there once you pause for a split second. I like those types of enhancements. Ones that are helpful, but not forced right in your face and impeding peoples ability to use the product as previously used.Plus, like m^e mentioned, I too could spend lots of time exploring things I normally wouldn't based off of popular results poping up that I wouldn't have thought to look for. Hell back when I first heard about this I remember just typing in random letter combo's to see where it would take me haha. All in all, I give google suggest the ol thumbs up
  22. I like both about equally, depends on my mood at the time. I get into grooves where I'll max out on one or the other but I never stop liking either. There is alot of really horrible rock out there to counter all the really horrible rap out there. It seems usually people compare the best of their preferred genre to some of the worst of the opposing heh. Plus it's too hard to classify most music now, as there is about 100 sub categories of rock, various subcatagories of rap... do you count them all? none? So yea, I like them evenly, a nice 50/50 split. Now I'm going to go listen through the Jay-z/Linkin Park collision course set
  23. Yea I had read about that. I'm actually impressed they lasted this long... probably would have shut down a couple years ago if it hadn't been for the release of the PSone model. Added a few years to the ol lifespan. Either way, the original PSX was an amazing piece of technology. Many good memories attached to that sucker *sniff*. I like how Sony made sure to point out that PSOne's will still be available for some time to come, just no new ones produced haha. Trying to squeeze every penny out of that generation
  24. Nah Vicious, alot of newer RPG's have turn based gameplay implemented in real-time (KOTOR style) or are real time fighting but still an RPG. I assume that's what she is tlaking about. Disliking turn-based RPG's tho rules out pretty much all of the old school classics since all the FF's, chrono trigger, pretty much ever snes rpg and still alot of them are turn based. I can see how that would bug some people, but it adds some interesting play dynamics once you get accustomed to it.
  25. As I've said a few times, the point isn't that it is a NECESSITY. We accept that we (assumedly) won't NEED a 1.2PB drive in 5 years, but if its available for a few hundred more then a top end regular HD why wouldn't we get one. Instead of buying a couple normal ones over the period of the life of a computer to upgrade storage, get a single drive that fills your needs for possibly an infinite time. Get a new computer? Just swap in your drive and wipe/reinstall the OS partition and voila, your system has returned to its former glory. Again, not necessity, just another additional niceness of tech.
