  1. Yea Houdini is right, when I first signed up for hosting here a bunch of us were surprised to note that our disk spaces all seemed to have interesting reports. Mine had 145/150mb used before I had ever uploaded a thing, another I think had some random weird "max" value... but after awhile it all calms down. Just give it some time and keep an eye on it and it should fix itself by the time it is relevant.Just try to keep mental track of what you upload and make sure it stays under 20mb until the bug fixes itself. If it actually let you upload more it could hypothetically cause issues when it realized you're account is supposed to have a 'bit' less then unlimited space
  2. Definitly something I'll be checking out. Thanks for the reccomendation I love these text based strategy type games. I've played a bunch of war-type strategy ones but I think a business based one will be an awesome change of pace. Woo!Edit: I guess I'll need to wait until tomorrow, since I can't access my personal email addy from here at work and I don't want to start signing up for stuff with my work addy. Ah well, tomorrow it is!
  3. Hahaha it sucks because my exact thought pattern upon reading moonwitches last post was "Wow... not being able to sleep without fans is kinda....oh crap... I don't think I could either..." haha The last time I actually turned off my comp at night I fired it back up because the room was too quiet... Luckily I'm not as big on being clean as witchy. I've been known to clean my heatsink/fans of dust every week or so during the summer when they need the extra heat efficiency but otherwise my computer is a cesspool haha. Board chow and mouse poop for everyone! WOO!
  4. I think the main reason they use the pagerank system instead of one like you are suiggesting, is that it would be easy for sites to jump to the top of a ranking even if they have no REAL information about the given search criteria. For example, you say check the title as the most important, H1 second most important, etc. Well someone could simply spam their titlebar with a large number of commonly searched phrases, and then might show up in a search for "free web hosting" even though it is actually a porn site or something. Similarly, that is like when sites put "invisible" (same color as background) text with tonnes of common terms only to draw in search engines.By ranking pages based on credibility it allows pages that people actually find useful to be the first results, followed by those the crawler "thinks" has the correct information.I may have misinterpreted what you meant, but assuming I didn't then this should all be relevant heh Your ideas were solid though, I just think it'd be easier to trick search engines unless you thought up a plan to stop such activities,
  5. Since people have already replied and you put together a well thought out post, I'll leave it active... but next time make sure to check if other topics relate to what you wish to discuss already as the others mentioned (also, put it in the right forum )As far as the actual topic is concerned, I would agree whole heartedly. Although not a huge deal, being able to get a shorter/less weird address is also a good point. I know my gmail addy's are all ones I got on my first try and are ones I could not get when I tried them on hotmail. Apparently my first/last name combo is too common or something...
  6. OOOOH okok, that would work really well. I was thinking just saying each individual letter as it was typed, but since most people type fast enough that the spoken letters would overlap and become distorted, that could cause issues. But yea if it was set up to wait for a break (say, hitting the spacebar or enter or a period) before reading off a word then that would work well. You could quickly get used to makeiong sure it's reading off everything you type properly. Good thinking. (Unless I'm still not getting what you mean, in which case I still like this version of it haha)
  7. Marretas... I actually love that idea haha. I can't believe I never thought of it I mean it would limit the speed at which one could type significantly if they had to make sure each letter was properly said before moving on, however especially while learning to type on a qwerty layout it would be a huge help. Even after they had learned you could just have the option to wait until done typing, then re-read the typed data to error check. Or even more efficient, just read aloud the words that failed spell/grammar checks. Some problems could still slip through but this would give them a good way to type in 95% of situations where a single typo or two won't be the end of the world.
  8. CMS = content management system. If you are hosted here at Xisto, you can install them through cpanel under the Fantastico menu and will be ready to go. Basically a CMS (such as freePhP, Drupal, Mambo Open Source, php-nuke, etc) lets you build a webpage and update content quickly and easily. Once you install a CMS, they usually/always have a basic template style. You can either obtain generic templates from their site or other sites to use, modify an existing template, or make your own. This basically is the design and layout of your site. Once you have a template created, you can basically log in and simply click "add content" (or something similar) and add a page. A CMS allows you to take a blog-like approach to a webpage. It keeps news posts and sub pages all organized for you and you simply use online forms to make the various pages of the site. This would be great if you have employees that need different levels of access, as you can usually give each username it's own level of access. Some may be able to create/edit all posts, others only submit news posts that need to be accepted by higher ups. A CMS system allows you to make a site that is 100% congruent, easy to manage, and well organized. You basically can keep it updated completely with only accessing it through web interfaces if you so choose (after you have a template set up). For more info on a couple popular CMS options: PHP-Nuke Mambo Drupal <-Note: Drupal's site was not responding when I posted this...
  9. I just feel like commenting on the issue of the ending. If you think about it, the first game's ending was quite similar except it wasn't as abrupt. As far as what would continue once the screen went dark at the end of HL1, we did not know. We knew only that it had a connection to the Gman (unless of course you decided to fight it out against the alien horde )This is not much different from the end of HL2. Both left you with some questions... what is happening next? Is everything fine or is there more problems to follow? What will Gordon's future hold? Tune in next time to find out :oPersoanlly I LOVED the end for HL2. It was just such a cliffhanger that it drove me insane and screamed of more HL goodness to come. A definitive end would simply mean the story was over, and frankly I'm glad it isn't. Episodic content may or may not be something I'll enjoy, but regardless more HL is more HL.I like it when games switch things up. Leaving a game unfinished is one thing but when they pull off and obviously planned out cliffhanger, awesome. Generic endings are just that, generic. Games need twists to differentiate themselves nowadays and HL2 had a handful, including the ending Just my 2 cents.
  10. Wow that's pretty awesome. Real transparency makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside Haha, but yea it looks like it could be awesome, I'll need to try this out soon.As for whether or not it will affect other developement, I can't imagine it would take away much. I mean, there are dedicated groups that are working on improving security issues, and others dedicated to x11 related things. With open source, the programmers work on the issues they want to, which helps both keep people working where they are most efficient, and also making sure that if one area gets a bit more attention, there will still developement in the other areas.
  11. Oh another aspect of the technology side of the iPod that I think we'll see changing soon is the storage medium. While they'll probably have miniHD based ones available for a long time to have the super huge storage available, I think we'll see more and more go solid state memory as they manage to get larger sizes of solid state memory available. I know one company released (or is soon releasing) a 10gig flash drive mp3 player so I can't see why Apple wouldn't be following in suit. Personally solid state seems more logical as its faster (I believe?) and would reduce the number of moving parts, which is always a plus for bat life and durability. Then again who knows, maybe they'llcome up with an innovative new storage method. Personally I think 60gigs is more then enough for anyone :| So I'd rather them focus on features or improving the tech, rather then trying to jump to 80 or 100gig ipods.
  12. Yea I remember hearing about that exploit, apparently by the time people were in the process of actually testing the bug to confirm it's existence, google had already patched the problem up. It's never nice seeing an epxloit/security risk like this but it's good to see Google taking quick and appropriate action against such things when they do arise.I know Hotmail has had a number of security issues back in the day that seemed to take a long time for them to finally get around to fixing, haven't heard anything over the last few years though... possibly because I ignore hotmail with all my might now :oUnless one of the competitors pull something amazing out, I can't see me switching from Gmail. The combination of the service itself and the companies dedication to keeping it at its best make it the one for me.
  13. Wow I never really thought gaming on palm's took off that much :| I know I've played some little puzzle type games like bejewelled on a friends palm but I've never really heard much about the gaming scene on them so just sort of assumed it was pretty much inactive. It's cool to see that they have a wide variety of (assumedly) quality titles. Now I know if I ever have the money where I can afford to get a pda, I'll be able to use it for more then that pesky "work" stuff
  14. I haven't had that many systems come to think of it... nes, snes, gameboy original, playstation... yea thats about it. I've always had an xbox or xbox360 or ps2 around, but never owned by me personally (gotta love roomates with monneh).
  15. Welcome to the boards. I'm glad you are a new n00b, and not an old n00b, or my brain might explode from oxymoronitis...But yes welcome to Xisto I look forward to seeing you around the boards
  16. Yea I'm surprised at how good the spam filter for Gmail is... I have only had a single piece of spam get through. Everything else was filtered accordingly and it even managed to start filtering emails with a certain subject title that I always deleted on seeing them. All in all, I'd use gmail just for the spam filter. Let alone the other goodies
  17. Eating someone ALIVE would be a problem about the soul. But as long as we wait for them to be dead I don't see how the soul would be affected. It would, assumedly, be long gone. plus eating a body would really be more respectful then letting it slowly deteriorate and eventually be devoured by bugs... at least we would treat it as good as any meat we were about to eat
  18. Well like I said, they obviously already have a way to read the comps output, or else they wouldn't have a computer to begin with... so keep using that method but with a new input choice.
  19. Whether it is the sig or the product... the shirt should have gone for copyright infringement and used the evil monkey from family guy... Not that it would make any more sense... but the evil monkey from family guy is the pimp
  20. The title is dark-in-fur and that describes the game? Is it all about wearing fur? Cause PETA will likely send assassins after you if it is indeed about that...Otherwise yea, give us some deets. Sub-Genre, programming language, goals, all that jazz
  21. Haha I love that way of thinking... cannibalism to optimize culture the way we optimize code I never really thought about ways to optimize efficiency of our culture... just about ways to "better" it heh... I now have food for thought...
  22. To notice mistakes they could use the mentioned verbal readers (which I've seen some that are actually really good recently for English, other languages may cause issues) or they could just review everything at the end using the braille output device in the image above, same as reading anything else off a computer for them. You'd think there would be braille keyboards already, I mean it can't be that hard to put the raised dots for each letter on the corresponding key...
  23. Short answer? NoLong answer? NOoooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooOOOOooooooThey were more of a novelty idea then a well executed one... Virtual boys were evil haha. They were the only 3D anyhing that has ever made me get motion sickness, including large simulators and whatnot haha. Stupid virtual boy with its stupid red lines...
  24. Haha I wasw gonna mention that it was a bit sexist to assume the females of the board would like frilly little pink and cutesy sigs... but luckily I was right that others would take note :oAs a note about the actual work, I agree with the comment that the text is nearly impossible to read and that they are too bright. On an lcd in a dark room those things could blind someone heh
  25. ...Uh...I assume you are taalking about the latest prince of persia release? I would suggest fleshing out your posts more, especially when you create a topic, or else the admins might have to react...
