Drive thrus are really stupid unless you have absolutely no place to park anyway. I remember that once a couple of friends took a shopping cart from the nearby supermarket and went into the drive thru, the people serving were not too happy and decided to chase us out

I've seen linux routers with much less ram than that... more like 2-4mb on a 386 CPU. Depends on how much you are routing, but this is more than enough for an average house. You may also want to mention that setting up linux for this sort of thing requires good knowledge of the OS and being good at using the command prompt and editors like vi or emacs.

Planning To Purchase Laptop in the future
alperuzi replied to [i]_R_Crazy_Idiot's topic in Science and Technology
Acer is good with laptops, so is Toshiba. As of now, something with a Sonoma CPU, 1gb of ram, 80gb hdd, wifi + ATI mobility X600 would be very powerful but also have decent battery life and portability. -
Using Voip with VOIP, will we still need landlines?
alperuzi replied to nobilius's topic in Science and Technology
Well, if you people have noticed, what is happening is that everything is shifting towards being digitized and having an IP. So in the near future your phone, TV, gaming console will be connected to the same network and each have an IP address. From the same network all services will be delivered; internet, TV, phone. It was planned that this would happen with the fourth generation of mobile phones but I think it will still take some time -
don't get me started with Gas prices again, we pay an average of 2.80 CAD per litre in Turkey so consider yourselves lucky :ph34r:to better give you an idea, I fill up a corolla for around 120 CAD which is approximately 100 US.

I just use SMF, it is a great board and has a very dedicated community that is growing rapidly. If you're old and grumpy like me you will remember the days when bulletin boards used CGI and you didn't need a php + mysql webserver to run them... the days of YaBB - Yet Another Bulletin Board. SMF is a completly redesigned BB from the makers of YaBB. So they have experience

I have used MS Virtual PC last year for one of the classes I was taking (Operating Systems in fact) and it had no problems whatsoever. And we got it for free too because it was for educational purposes. If you download a pirated version obviously it may ask for a CD key. However I was running Slackware 10 on an XP machine with absolutely no problems, all drives, samba, network, internet, they all worked. I would think that even X windows would work although I have not tried it, I prefer the command prompt.

I turned them off too, just like Opaque said. You can always do that...I myself only use text in signatures, a picture meaning a thousand words... I don't believe that crap!

For all movies except DVD I use Media Player Classic (MPC) which can be found on sourceforge. For DVDs I use PowerDVD.and for audio I use winamp (had to say it too...)

the controller doesn't actually have a laser. it has position sensing built into it, probably by means of an accelerometer. So it can feel what you are doing. I watched the video they released where people bat, swing, shoot with the controller. It looks like it'll be a lot of fun. Nintendo won't win the speed competion (PS3) but they have certainly won the ingenuity competition.

Connection is bad? Skype's connection is the best I've ever seen. Firewall, router, switch it can bypass pretty much everything. And the voice quality is by far superior to any other means, its much better than a standard telephone for sure. Ebay recently acquired the company actually, they have no competition when it comes to VoIP.MSN's voice chat is the worst I can say, even Google Talk which is in beta does a better job at connecting and voice quality. MSN is just there for text messaging. I have truthfully never used any other features except that and webcam, hopefully the webcam feature of Skype will be complete soon so that I won't have to use MSN for that either.

It won't be of any use, where do you think the smaller companies buy their oil from? Yup, BP.Here is the best way:Buy less cars, boycott especially the larger car companies and buy the smallest engined car if you have to. You see, no cars = less petroleum needed. Go take the bus, the train, the subway (tube as you guys call it ).In a matter of years the large car companies will start bragging about lower sales, lower profit and the governments + OPEC + Petroleum Companies will be pressured to lower prices.

alperuzi replied to philipdupreez's topic in Science and Technology
EBay bought Skype, lets see how they are gonna do... as long as its still free I'm fine with it, they've got the best audio quality. -
Milk is intended to feed baby cows... not peoplethats what a vegan teacher I've had years ago used to tell us.I like milk though, especially the 1.5% fat kind... goes down like water...

I've used a Netgear and a Dlink for a while and can recommend both. The Dlink router is great, has features like UPnP. The Netgear has good wireless reception a nice case design. The packet losses you experienced is probably due to the misplacement of the router. Where you place the router in a room really affects the reception.

From what I've heard, there wont be many of these cards produced since it is actually difficult to do so. Nvidia cancelled their 7800 Ultra plans because they know that ATI cannot produce too many of these.
-
When it comes to wireless networks there is a lot to consider. Signal strength is directly affected by the antenna, card and surrounding space you are working in. For better reception you need an antenna with better gain (measured in dB), a card with a higher power output (measured in mW) and not too many walls in between the APs and the computers.Win98 is no good with WiFi so I dunno why you are switching...
-
umm, well, you wrote everything but what the card actually is! As in, what brand and what chipset it is. Right now I can have absolutly nothing to say about these specs othere than the clock speed is pretty low and the memory is going to be a bottleneck with that 64 bit interface.however, considering it is ?10.00... its not so bad.

Burning Divx (.avi) movies to DVD is just throwing the file into a DVD disc with your favorite burning software. However you'll need either:1) A computer2) A dvd player with the ability to play Divx filesto watch the movies on the DVD

Yeah, this has been endlessly argued. I think the characters in kotor1 were much better than those in 2, Bastila had a great charisma about her and the voice acting was very well done. The HK unit also had some great conversations. The problem with 2 was that it was rushed and parts were taken out at the last moment to have a complete-like game to market. This is mostly the publishers fault (Lucasarts), as with the new trilogy they are nothing but a bunch of capitalist bastards trying to earn more money.Hopefully, now that the movies are all over the release of Kotor 3 will result in a full and finished game, not to mention which is less buggy.

KDE is more windows like and Gnome is more fancy, take your pick, I always used to use gnome after they integrated Nautilus.
