  1. I took a computer maintanence course last summer. It was prety basic with a bunch of fixing up computers. We worked with Windows 98s and learned how to fix up the computer's hard drive, motherboard and stuff. There was a part of the course that we have to format the hard drive using MS-DOS. I think it was pretty simple. You run MS-DOS from setup and from your a: (Which is where your system disk is located - we used floppy disks) i just typed "format c:" then everything gets formatted. But after that we learnt something more complicated like editing and deleting partitions or something. I wanted to try with my home computer but my mom didn't trust me and refused to let me change any partitions. Now i just stick with the system CD. I just pop it in like bread and toaster and click on the "next"s. Takes about 50minutes but during that time i'll just sleep. Like is good....
  2. So far over my years of shutting down processes that i have no idea of, I've been 100% lucky in all my actions. Basically, i try not to shut down anything with username of "System" in it. I know all the programs i have in my computer and if i see one that is running but I'mnot using I'll just shut it down. Problem is, most viruses don't run as processes and can be really annoying when you try to find their name and go to the Symantec website or something to get a definition. The worst part of having a virus ruin your computer is when it shuts down your data recieving part of your internet. You will not be able to update your definitions if you have not(Which i usually don't), and when you open up task manager to shut down unknown programs you might get rid of the "good" ones. So when I'm surfing unknown websites, i just stick to my Apple Powerbook. Heh.
  3. Fantastic tutorial. I've added it to my bookmarks. I think maybe I'll try working with php-nuke first for the mean time before moving on the customizing my own php template. All that php is really mind-boggling because I've never seen or done php before. I thought of buying some books but most of them are pretty useless because they explain about the history of php and other stupid stuff. What i need is more of a Glossary list of php, what php can do and is php "dynamic" as in, can it be freely changed by the user or is it limited like HTML?Right now i can understand some parts where you placed the code but all the "$"s and the "&"s and "?"s I'm really blur with because i don't get what they stand for. Do you know of a good refer-to guide that i can find on the net with a Glossary with all these terms? I learned HTML and XHTML that way. It's way much easier than going step-by-step with a book. Or if you don't mind making a small list of these terms for me I'll REALLY REALLY appreciate it. Thanks for the tutorial again. It's worth it for some phpnewbies like me...
  4. What program did you use to design this picture? It looks interesting i can tell, very "cartoony". Like you said, the head has a bit of a problem though because it's a bit too long. Make the head a little more squarish than rectangular. I think maybe you should curve the muzzle part of it too to give it a more feminine structure. I'm not a pro at this digital art but I'm guessing if you try to look at some other artist's impressions of lions you might be able to get something out of it. Maybe you should try Calvin and Hobbes? Even though Hobbes is a tiger it has the face structure of a cute little cat and lions are cats.
  5. I have the same problem with my mates. I specifically put up a rules and guidelines topic and made it an Announcement. Of course, some people just wanna be cocky and have "better" ideas of their own. Many of my friends aren't the blabbering type who would type as much as possible. Most of the posts would be like a yes or no answer. For Xisto this is very different because everyone has a specific goal which is mopst likely getting the hosting account and staying active. Back in my forum there is no goal. I try to make them appreciate what they have here but they just like to be stupid and post 1 sentence posts and spam. What am i supposed to say to them? I definitely want the members but they just come online to the forum, post a "I agree haha!" post and loggout. There is no meaning to all this. What have i done wrong and what do i have to do to keep my members AND retain good, meaningful posts?
  6. I'm sure we're all very sad to hear you're leaving us. But if you really want to terminate your account, you can go to https://support.xisto.com/ and do what you gotta do. I've never tried it but I'm guessing it works. If in a few years to come you still remember us please come by and say hi.
  7. I have Blizzard's Diablo 2, World of Warcraft, and yes, the good ol' Warcraft 3(Frozen Throne) Right now i still don't see a difference from these games and other newer ones that just came out a few months ago. Although Blizzard basically ALWAYS delay their release date, the wait really pays off what with all that great graphics and fantastic storyline and maps. It's just unbeatable. Guild Wars has really came close to beating WoW because of its HUGE map. But WoW has a really big map too and has more stuff to it than just fighting and killing. Blizzard has created such wonderful games. I leave them on my games rack when i buy new games but when the new game starts getting boring i can always count on playing DOTA or just a skirmish one-player game with the computer with Warcraft. The Strategy in the game is just - blizzardly perfect.
  8. Same problem here, except i don't even know where to find the "View Network Computers" button. I've searched the Microsoft website on how to do this but found nothing. So i gave up, bought a portable hard drive, and started transfering stuff. It doesn't clog up your internet anyway.
  9. Personally, all those ad blockers are becoming a really big hassle. I for one, uses Firefox and the ads don't bother me. Firefox just seems to "know" how to filter the right "newwindow" commands and the wrong ones. Of course there was that few years before that i use Internet explorer. I was pretty fond of comet cursor's ad blocker. Sure, they've got spyware in the program but it's not really noticeable and it's not like i put my credit card numbers in my computer. But the ad blocker, ad ZAPPER actually worked like a charm. You know how some stupid sites might have one open newwindow ad and you close and and it just pops another one up again? ad zapper just zaps all of it away and you won't even notice.
  10. All through my years on the computer, i've found many small software utilities that can be downloaded quite easily from the official site but most often takes time. That's the reason why there are mirrors around the web. So far, i find majorgeeks.com the best place to go to if you want to find any software mirror. They don't necessarily host the software itself all the time but most of the time they would have servers all over different countries hosting the software. They've got virus definitions, patches to existing software, and anti-spyware scanners and much much more. Although as I've read in previous topics that most of the software hosted in majorgeeks.com is mainly Windows related, i believe the patches for some of the software works on Macs or Linux too. One other good thing about Majorgeeks is that it boasts only 1 ad on the side of the screen that most users won't even notice. It is also very browser-friendly and can accept basically every browser available in the net (I tried alot of browsers and all of them worked on majorgeeks.com). And even if you don't know which section the software you want is in, you can search using the Google search utility. I won't say much about their forum because I've never been there. (Xisto is still the best for technical answers!) But it seems pretty OK by the many answers I've seen to many difficult computer-related questions. Majorgeeks.com is seriously really great for downloading mirrors really fast and checking out on the latest software or maybe even help the others in the forum!
  11. Adobe and Macromedia has always been in competition. Lately, Adobe has beaten Macromedia by a ton. By now, most of ya'll would know about Macromedia's specialty in animations. Macromedia Flash was a big hit when it went into the market. It was the best of its kind and Adobe has never challenged it with their own fancy designers. Yet they developed new ideas, came up with Adobe Audition and many other fancy programs with a bunch of fancy tools. The merger, in my opinion, will really close-out this competition. But the game is not over, Microsoft, although it specialises in their own OS, is having second thoughts about not joining the competition. Apple too is a great company and has created several graphic design programs. Adobe-Macromedia has now faced their biggest challenge yet. I wouldn't be surprised if they started producing an anti-virus software a few years later.
  12. When you play your favorite MMORPG, do you look and wish you it could ever be real? Wouldn't it be wonderful to live 2 different lives? There will be so much possibilities that you can think of. The idea of Virtual Reality now comes to hand with many scientists. The mind is a wonderous thing. It enables you to "feel" everything around you. It allows freedom of your body to learn. If you touch fire, it burns, it hurts, your mind tells you to pull away. Let's think about it differently - You touch fire, it burns, it's SUPPOSED to hurt, your mind tells you it doesn't hurt so you don't feel anything. The ability to alter our mind's thoughts are what scientists are working on now. To be able to make your mind BELIEVE it is in a different situation than it is right now is what makes the word Virtual Reality so special. So you're thinking: What has all this got to do with MMORPGs? Well for one thing, in Virtual Reality, it is as what it says - based on reality in a different form or universe. What is reality? Reality is you, the world, and other "you's"(people and animals). Thus we can say that in Virtual Reality, you would be viewing a different world in a first-person-view. MMORPGs are based on a one-person-view, thus it is Virtual Reality in itself. But when we think of the many wondrous possibilities of Virtual Reality, we think abouts its cons too. When you get hit or stabbed in Virtual Reality, your mind tells you that this hurts, and you feel pain. When you are stabbed to DEATH in Virtual Reality, your mind tells you that you are supposed to be dead. But you're not. What happens? In theory, you would be brain-dead. Your mind just stops working because it thinks it is dead, it thinks YOU are dead. When we look at the future of MMORPGs, we think Virtual Reality. We dream about being able to lead another life where you are the boss and control everything. In real life, you are influenced by everyone else. In Virtual Reality, you get to choose your paths and if you think something is wrong, you change it. So is this considered Virtual Reality if you can change your life? The questions are endless, but I'll stop at this point and leave most of you thinking about what the world can bring us - both good and bad.
  13. So far, I've been to Japan, United States, and Singapore. Yes, Singapore too has grown VERY fast. Why? Let me quote from unimatrix here: Unlike the United States, Japan and Singapore is physically WAY smaller. Let's start with the biggest of the 2. Japan has one of the largest population densities in the world and also one of the worst places where you would like to live your life in. This is because Japan faces the Pacific Ocean. As we all know, many hurricanes and such build up in the ocean, thus it really does alot of damage to Japan if it were to be hit. What does Japan do? They import technology from other countries all over the world. Technologies that will save those precious 40-storey buildings and many other common-folk's homes. At the same time, attracting many other immigrants to migrate and settle there because of the technology-filled lifestyle. This thus attracts many big companies such as Panasonic, Sony, HP, and a lot others. These companies develop their ideas here and test them in the local area. (Thus u get the idea why many newest cellphones come out in Japan/Korea faster than any other country). The government may also afford to wire up the whole island with the newest in telecommunications technology, because its so small! Same goes with Singapore, being smaller than a pencil dot on the world Map, it is one of the fastest growing countries, fastest growing in both population and technology. Although it is not a hotspot for many companies to settle in because of lack of landspace, it IS burningly hot for companies to try out new models of electronics because there's is such a high population density. Singapore is also so small that wiring the whole island would cost a digit from the cost North America has to pay to wire everything up. Thus, compared to the smaller countries, The United States may be big for its own good but the cons may stretch fifty feet long.
  14. Had an absolutely good laugh out of them. One of'em practically dropped me to the floor. No really. I've never been on IRC but I've been to plenty of chatrooms but none as funny as this. It's hilarious. Thanks for sharing them it really gives a good laugh out of anyone stressed out like me because I've got tons of homework....well the laughter has subsided - back to work d-.-bP.S How did u do the inverted b?
  15. If you say its a trojan but you don't know its name, you'd probably be at best scanning with your anti-virus software. Whether is it Norton or McAfee, you need to know what is going on with your computer. Check the logs of incoming files downloaded, you may not even know you downloaded the trojan yourself. Norton has a tool which allows you to disallow internet access from a specific file or program. It's pretty useful because i set mine to always ask me if it can allow a file from my computer in or out. In any case, its a good idea to do a full scan with a spyware removal tool also because your normal anti-virus package may not have come with a full list of spyware definitions.
  16. I like MMORPGs. They're the best that's all i can say. Multiplayer strategy games are also pretty fun but not as fun as controlling your character and playing on a totally different world. It feels like you're another person all over again. So well since you're asking which is my favorite....I'd have to say Pristontale. I played it for 2 years during its beta stage and it was fabulous! best of its kind! I played till the 2nd tier quest and had a pretty good build. But then they announced that the game was going to be pay-2-play. That pretty much shocked me.....well I'm not playing THAT anymore. Now I play Ragnarok private server which is just as good.
  17. Look left look right, now look in the middle and you see the remarkable Xbox 360. You look up and see the price, you shake your head and turn away...... No really, this would be a realistic situation for most people around here. First of all is the Xbox 360 really worth the money? As written in here, the Xbox is pretty comparable with the PS3. To my opinion, i like the PS3 better because i like the idea of hookign up your PSP wirelessly to your PS3 although it is just a rumor. The PS3 can also support back editions of games so that's pretty cool because there are a bunch of games i used to love playing on the PS1. Obviously the Nintendo totally loses out on both of them because of the company's lack of creativity. Though of course it might be priced cheaper than either, the company produces great games using their console though, the playstations are more racing and Xbox is for strategy or RPG games.
  18. Just a quick comment about these kind of "useless" websites. Well i wouldn't call this useless because it looks useful enough for, like infamousflame said - mathematicians and such but who actually researches the end of Pi and goes on the net to find out anyway? So back to the point here. We have a pretty much useless site. We have pretty much a millions useless sites out there in the web. What are they useful for? nothing. So you look up at their domain name and you realise that the site's got a ".com" domain. Why would anyone pay for the domain when it absolutely does nothing to inform, perform, nor inquire about something worth knowing. Plus, there are no ads at all!
  19. Yes of course. I've been using Gmail for ages now since my cousin sent me the invite. Of course i spread the knowledge to others and given them all 6 of my invites. Lucky me though, right after i gave off my last invite, then came the 50 invites. Actually, gmail doesn't really need the invite thing anymore because when you've used one invite, you'll get 1 more so you get unlimited invites. I'm guessing Google wants more gossip about their invites. This leads to my second question: Will it stay free? Many say no, most say yes. I have no comments to give about this idea. Gmail spends thousands of dollars in keeping their server up, especially the one for gmail. They earn their keep by advertisement and some basic paid tools but most of Google's tools are free. How does Google gain a profit from its spendings? I mean, many companies like to advertise with Google but Google pays others for advertising the same company over again. Of course there would be a profit in doing that but its basically the only profit-gaining part of Google I've ever seen so far. This makes no sense.
  20. You know....some places are still very much still way back in time. Countries in places like Nigera and some parts of south-east Asia still follow a King/Queen idea and unlike modern us (ta!) the King/Queen cannot be elected but is just the throne passed down from father to son. Personally, i never thought how the human race could be this cruel? Of course, waaaay back in those days everyone followed a king or queen because if they've got no leader then they've got no life.....or so they thought. Now now i do not quite believe the Bible started all this "All men are created equal" talk. The chinese also played a part in this. As most of you all would know, the Chinese came up with the idea of taking exams to prove your worth in becoming a minister or governor, thus the idea of having King's and Queens as rulers left the country, and in came governors, ministers, advisors, and such. I believe that there is usually still an Emperor but he listens to a board of advisors before making a decision. I'm not trying to prove that the Chinese were a more superior race. It is true that the Bible has given people faith and knowledge too. All religions have their own beliefs and i believe in respect for all of them. P.S I think I'm going a little too off-topic already...sorry
  21. Well...I'm a Chinese so what i can say is that it's actually pretty fun when you try to put chinese words in english. It's basically pretty accurate on the voicing of the words but you're missing some key points here and there like the chinese word for "pig" - "zhu". I'm sure you can pronounce that! And for the chinese word that means "uh oh" - "aiyoh". Well...it's pretty ok if you're really new to the chinese language but going to China armed with this? Yeah...you wouldn't really last long.
  22. Nice tutorial. I've always tried testing the filters of Adobe Photoshop and I never come up with any practical nor good design. Unrotunately for me, some of my friends who have basically no knowledge of Photoshop at all comes up with such great BG designs and i just envy them and pity myself. What you've done is already excellent by my standards. I only usually get a nice random design once every month? But most of the time I'll just forget the sequence of how i did it and it'll be too late. So yeah this is really good.
  23. Out-of-topic:From what I've heard, laptop batteries have about the same problem too. (Although most companies will not replace your battery for free like Apple do). My dad's ancient Acer laptop has 2 batteries. He often uses only one but when the first one runs out he will switch then recharge the second one for next time. But what he usually does when he keeps the laptop at home is that he leaves the battery in the laptop while it is FULLY charged but he just leaves it running. This is a major no-no if your computer isn't from Apple. Windows-build computers have a major problem with their batteries. After a while of doing that it will slowly get worse and worse. Of course Apple computers have the same problem but its designed for longer battery operation so...there you go..
  24. Stunning pictures! Love'em! I just changed my wallpaper to the second sneak peak because it's so mellow yet..how do i put it? Artistic?. Of course i edited off the center tree because its really ruining the sight but i kept the original because the edited one doesn't seem as natural.I've never been to India but the mountain trek must've been pretty worth it judging by the pictures (and the fact that you used a cybershot but still get the resolution right =)). The closest I've been to a mountain trek is like - the Appalachians. I went up there horseback riding once and we sorta went around the hill/mountain instead of going on top of it. But its still pretty great. I went in the morning so there is just the touch of hanging mist in the air which is just beautiful to go with the view!
  25. What luck...but heck I'm not even allowed to customize my computer....well that is after i sorta blew up the CPU... These few days i gotta get some parts from some second-hand store and fix up a windows 98 computer for myself. My budget would be something like $50. Yeah maybe I'll strike it lucky and get a ten buck hard drive but hey...these things happen!
