  1. Everybody here is going on about the midi benefits of pro tools and the massivesamples available with it, but are these real advantages? They are only advantages if you're not interested in using real musical instruments. There are a lot of people who refuse to, or at least try not to use parrotstyle midi and sampled music files. I'm one of them.Another thing people talk about is the great advantage of using software to doctor you're recorded take. What about say just re-recording a vocal where a notes just slightly out of pitch rather than'digitally tweaking it'. No wonder theres so many recordings that sound robotic. What has happened to the live feel of recorded music? Some people want to sound so elitist about whatever #$#$# they use.If you're any good as a musician at all, you really don't need all the toys.If you do, then go back to school. Learn you're instrument.
  2. These research companies like making money. In order to make money they have to get grants fromeither the government or large corporations. Depending upon who they are getting the money from, this could skewer the results anyway. If mobile phones cause cancer, then surely anything with an electro magnetic field should, be it a computeror a toaster.l don't want to know what to believe about these research companies anymore. What is good for you one year, the next year causes disease.
  3. What's really depressing is anything by Nirvana.John Lennon has some really depressing songs too, particularly"Cold turkey". I even find "Imagine" depressing.Axl Rose and his "Chinese Democracy" is also real depressing. Pink Floyd's dark side of the moon is all prettydepressing, as good as it is.There is so much depressing music out there that it's not funny.
  4. I hate to sound negative, but it's alwaysArsenal verse Chelsea, or one of them verse ManchesterUnited or Liverpool. The same 4 teams have owned the Premier league for way too long. They are also the ones bringing it down. They need a salary cap in the Premier league, just like the NFL. English football is like a train that's about to hit a brick wall. All of the teams are ridiculously in debt. It's the big 4 who brought us to this problem really.Other smaller clubs can't survive in the Premiership without going way into debt. Indeed with bankruptcy threatening. Look at all the fair sized teams that have nearly been ruined so far: Leeds,Charlton,Southhampton,Watford,Derby,Sheffield Wednesday,Sheffield United,Leicster,Ipswitch and more. This might sound irrational but still. It might be the only solution.Maybe what could be done, is all the English teams band together and attempt to cut ties completely with the bigger teams.Let this happen while the smaller clubs are still breathing. Let Man U, Chelsea etc form their super European leagueand leave domestic English football for the rest of the92 teams. When the greed of the bigger clubs destroys themselves and their "Super league", we would stillat least have teams in England unaffected. At least there would still be professional football in England, rather than none at all, if things continue as they are.
  5. Yes. I would switch like that. The only problem is ,is that there is specific softwarethat I use that won't run on Linux yet. All I can say, is that I won't buy another Windows operating system. My first one(Windows 98), I received for free. I then paid full price for Windows xp when it was released, and didn't imagine having to go through the ordeal of having to re-activate it so many timesas I did. What a task for something you've already paid for and is supposed to be yours.
  6. You know something? Right after posting this I came down with a bad case of the flu or something. I'm almost over it now though. I have a few sniffles. It was horrible though. Headache, dry scratchy raw throat, runny nose, hacking cough, fever. Tons of phlegm to cough up. This is the first I've been sick in a few years. I wonder if it's the Swine Flu? I'm almost better now though.
  7. I don't think they'd ever use c# to build an operating system. I mean, C# is justa parrot version of visual basic anyway using a c++ type syntax. I really don't knowwhy Microsoft bothered creating that language.I'm sure they used C++ to create all the Microsoft operating systems. They definitelyaren't java. What they never specify though is if they used Microsoft C++ orBorland C++, the two biggest C++ companies. Probably Microsoft C++ for Windows.Borland C++ for Linux no doubt.Don't forget that with both Microsoft and Linux there would have been a lot of work alsodone at the Machine language level.
  8. Not only that, but think of all the time you invest in music as well. The way I see it, the only valid reason really to put all effort into music, is quite simply to do it for the fun of it and have no expectations about getting signed to a record company or anything. Record companies sign too few real bands these days. Instead they'll manufacture someone like Brittney Spears instead. Someone who has no qualms about lip syncing at her concerts. Record companies only sign what they they think they want people to hear as well. If you have any real originality, or something unique, this goes against the grain of what record companies desire. There can't be any harder or more difficult field to succeed in than the music business. The way I see it, just play music for the fun of it, and try to have something a little different to offer. That way maybe you'll stand out and people will notice.
  9. I've often wondered what this is about the swine flu. Yes, it apparantly appears tobe no worse than any other kind of flu, which means this whole swine flu thing is just anotherexcuse for the media to sensationalize something again, and get people buying magazines and such. There's money in sensationalism.Myself, I never get sick it seems, knock on wood. I never have any shots either.I don't mean to sound crass by saying the reason I don't get the flu is becauseI don't believe in it, but I can't think of any other excuse, or maybe it's the humor I feel from seeing idiot hypochondriacs walking through the subwaywearing medical masks. These people appear to be scared of their own shadow.Maybe that has something to do with it.
  10. It makes sense about having a clear conscience, how thatwould make one's goals in life clearer, but any relieved stress wouldmake things easier really.Another thing is, I'm an optimist, yet I've known many, manyhalf decent people who have tried to attain specific goals their entire life, and still haven't. Not just for 21 days of positive thinking, but their whole livesspent thinking positively.Sure positive thinking and a clear conscience will help in aiding you to be successful somewhat, but fore instance, just look at all the kids who want to play professional sports who never achieve that. Some times theres only room for so many, and having good luckcan help too. Also, having modest goals helps. Not everyone can be rich.
  11. It often depends how these songs are done. If they have lots ofweeping violins and cellos, and tons of choirs, and are really sappy, it can be a bit much to take. I guess production is the key.
  12. Here in Toronto the most dangerous creatures I run into are squirrelsand skunks.Racoons have also made a re-appearance in Toronto, and I've seen a few of them.I would think that they might be slightly dangerous if bothered. Once, way up in Northern Canada, we went to a garbage dump. You couldsee many black bears scavenging for food there. It definitely felt safestaying in the car. I mean, these bears were wild, not from a zoo or anything. Once in England, out in the country, we manged to climb a fence averting a hugeherd of charging cattle. Now that could of been dangerous. They were loud and dustwas kicked up everywhere.
  13. I thought I'd learn php back in the spring of 2003. I built a forum over the summer. It was about as advanced as most, back then. I had it up on a site, but couldn't reallygenerate much traffic, so very few people used it. It worked really well though. The thing about building something like a forum now is that from a client side, itwould be much more involved. All the different browsers have made things alittle more frivolous(Internet Explorer, Mozilla,Safari.Opera,Chrome etc). In 2003 the only competition for Internet explorer appeared to be Netscape, which was fading fast, so it wasn't so difficult as far as the client side went. Now though, the html displays differently in many browsers, and that's noteven taking into account the fact that any javascript you use will be different for any browser.Yes I know, one should stick to the rules of the world wide web consortiumand follow them strictly. It goes some ways towards helping, but won't even come close to alleviating all headaches.
  14. Yes.That's very accurate, and the state and the Madison Avenue flunkies know how to sway public opinion with mega hype. Once they'd stunted individual choice and banned tobacco they'll look for their next endeavor, and it could be anybody or anything next. I don't mean to sound melodramatic but they'll slowly chip away at the rock of basic rights and freedom, until the rock is nothing but swept away dust. Power corrupts.
  15. In Britain they began calling secondary schools "high schools". Just one more small loss of the sense of British culture I guess. Before you know it Liverpool f.c will have a "schedule" and will fight for a champions league place in the league "standings".
  16. Don't forget, that first off, Australia is derivative of England. For example, expressions like "bloke" and "mate", and driving on the left hand side of the street, they took from Britain. They also speak like they are from the south of England as well. The way they pronounce "south" as "sarf". I guess Canadians would of ended up sounding like that too if the country wasn't right next to the U.S.A. Australia is definitely closer to Britain culturally than the U.S because of these things, Australians don't like American sports but they love Rugby and Cricket, just like the British, and they like soccer a lot. Of course the Aussies love their own "Aussie rules football", which is a different game all together. Like the U.S.A, the aussies also have their own desert, the ouback. Very similar to the one the Yanks have in Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico. This definitely leads to a type of Cowboy culture which the U.K doesn't really have. Of course something Australia shares with the U.S.A is they both have Native Indian cultures. I would say somebody who moved from the U.S.A to Australia wouldn't face too much of a culture shock though. Nothing like if they moved to Italy or say India. That would take some real adjusting. Most English speaking countries are very similar really, with only superficial differences. After all, we're living in the Global Village.
  17. That's it. You're another one out to ostracize tobacco users. Let's just forget about habits that are just as bad if not worse, such as Alcohol, and gambling. Things which have caused probably more misery. Another thing is, people blame all the cancer deaths on tobacco. Historically one in three people have always died of cancer. One could say that cancer is just about as natural a cause of death as could be. Also, with the vast amounts of people quitting smoking, then why has the cancer rate risen? I mean, fewer people are smoking right? Yet blame it all on tobacco. Let's not blame industrial waste at all. Also, in Canada you see these pictures of rotting lungs and rotting mouths on cigarette boxes. Now the whole thing is, unfortunately, I've been a smoker for a long time. I've never seen a picture of my lungs yet they couldn't be that bad though. Why? Compare my teeth to the ones on the cigarette boxes. I have all my teeth except for one wisdom tooth. My teeth look great. So maybe this guy on the cigarette box just didn't brush his teeth. Simple as that. I know many non smokers with very bad dental hygiene. Blame it on tobacco again? Maybe the guy with the rotted lungs smoked 4 packs a day. Most don't though. Maybe he worked in a mine. Admittedly it is a bad habit I would like to quit, but it is the most addictive substance on the planet. Personally I wish people wouldn't ostracize smokers so much. There's much worse people : animal poachers, thieves, rapists, terrorists, pedophiles etc. The government could also stop the ridiculously high taxes. Just a thought.
  18. I use paint shop pro 7. It may be old, but once I learned howto use it it was well worth it. Way better than microsoft paint.
  19. The way most people interpret Christianity, it justseems so hypocritical of a religion that wouldbe so infatuated with the "end", while at the same time, going on about eternal life. The way I interpret it though, I don't take the "end" literally, but instead as a "change". A spiritual cleansing perhaps.I believe in the internal life aspect of Christianity. So who knows when this end is? Besides, I'm sure there have been several "ends" that thedoom merchants have talked about through history. Everythingfrom the bubonic plague, through to the great depressionand the world wars, yet we are still here. I like to think positively, and if that means my own spin on Christianity, then so be it. Religion and spirituality shouldbe a positive thing anyway. Not just doom and gloom.
  20. I wouldn't believe the Forbes article fully anyway. The only ones whowould have a clear view of Gates assets, would be his accountants, and let nobody else tell you otherwise, including the I.R.S.I'm sure that there are also a lot of hidden valuable entities when you are that big of an operation anyway.I doubt if Bill Gates is worried one bit.
  21. I had the same problem as you before. I downloaded easy php, a localhost server : http://www.easyphp.org/ and quite simply disconnected from the internet when using it. It worked fine that way.
  22. I think the obvious answer is to have the one person die,and then save the ten people. Don't forget that one death affects a lot more people, so obviously ten would have even more effect.I think it's obvious really, regardless of the age of thepeople.
  23. I don't anticipate much at all from google asfar as an operating system goes. As somebody alreadymentioned, this operating system would be very light andwould support very few features. Google chrome is an exampleof a very light web browser, so I fully expect a googleos to be about the same. Now google is trying to complete with Linux. I don't think they'll eversucceed with that. Outside of the basic google search engine, the only thing I really like fromthem is Gmail. Such things as google maps and google analyticsdon't do it for me at all. I think they are trying to expand too quickly.
  24. McDonalds contributing to obesity?Generally I wouldn't say that their food is nutritiouswhatsoever, and the burgers seem to get smaller every year.I'd say obesity or not they are a complete rip off with exorbitantprices, all considered. In the end Mcdonalds is a waste of time.If only everybody would stop going there.
  25. The bag pipes are a musical instrument. The whole reason they were used on battle fields is because of the natural loud volumethat they have. That combined with the portability of the instrumentmakes them ideal to encourage an advancing army . Regardless, I've never really been a big fan of the bagpipes anyway.I mean, you have what? A seven note range? A Piano has at least an84 note range. A guitar at least 41 notes . The bagpipes seem pretty limiting.I also hear most bagpipes come with only a single drone, which should limit you to just one key right?I just find bagpipes too limited in scope for me.
