  1. Definitely start with HTML by finding a help site online or a book if you have a library or bookstore close to you (you may want to stick with used books because a lot of brand new manuals can be expensive).Second, download a trial of Dreamweaver from macromedia.com. This will give you time to sample the software before you make a big move and buy it (it's rather expensive :/). Dreamweaver is probably the easiest editor I've seen, although I do prefer hand writing the code myself. It comes with practice :(Third, make a basic webpage with text, maybe a background color, and a few links. Then, build off of it every day. Add pictures one day, tables another, etc. Keep good design habits and don't choose too many images, too many links, or outlandish colors. Until you get the hang of it, you want your page to be accessible so simple is probably the way to go. Fourth, I'd recommend learning CSS to get great control over your site. Through this, you can eliminate the need for having "font" tags, certain attribute tags, and you get to use div layers which will probably eliminate your dependency on tables.Fifth, if you wish, learn PHP for a more advanced look at your webdesign. It may be hard to learn but it's worth it in the long run if you want to create scripts and sites that people can truly interact with. I also recomment trying MySQL at this point so you can learn how to use databases. It's really a simple process when you get the hang of it. If you want to learn Javascript, don't go overboard with it. A site full of Java is no fun.Sixth, always validate your site at w3.org. This way, you can make sure that your code is correct. You can validate your CSS and perhaps upgrade to using XHTML (not much different than HTML, but you'll need to change around a few of your tags).-------Images: I recommend using Adobe Photoshop (trial downloads at adobe.com) or Macromedia Fireworks (trial downloads at macromedia.com) for creating your images. I've heard Jasc Paint Shop Pro is also good but I haven't personally tried it. Don't make your files too big so you can save space for what counts - the pages -------There are so many things you can do through your cPanel. You can install a great number of scripts to help you create your site, like forums, formmail (should be built-in), and the random gallery softwares. Just explore, learn and enjoy! Hope I helped
  2. I wouldn't put it past myself to say something unnecessary. The text is probably fine with the fractal.
  3. Ooh, thanks I think I should go back in the PSD and fix the text. It's all because of the diagonal scanlines in the background. As you can see, on the yellow background, you can read the text perfectly. I was worried about the background repeating, but most people use 800x600 (ick!) or 1024x768. Today's test was to fix around the site using different resolutions. And don't worry about being critical. Criticism can only help you and I try to be critical with a lot of designs I meet hoping it will only help the artist/designer. However...as I recently discovered through my LJ community, not everyone is as receptive to it as me and now I've got to go defend my thoughts >< Thanks again
  4. Dude, it's an ancient Hawaiian tradition. You skim on the lava so there's not as much chance of getting concentrated burns. The mixture of wood, reeds, and whatever is only meant to skim down the hill of lava, not go all the way into the freaking volcano and out again. Besides, the lava would cool outside. It's like sliding through hot mud. And you wouldn't die from the heat. Your skin might, but that's about it. Also, I was being sarcastic. SARCASM IS YOUR FRIEND.
  5. I'm trying to get the new design of my site to be more cross-browser friendly so I already validated it. You'll notice the long gray bar above the header image is actually caused by the DOCTYPE information at the top of the source code. Anyways, I needed a new design that would work with all browsers, and I wanted it to be both brighter and better looking. I got this result which works pretty well in all of the browsers I've tried (IE 6.0, Firefox, Opera). The header doesn't have an image map yet because I want to see how well the design registers with people before I continue making pages. Therefore, broken links aren't too much to worry about at this time. All the images are made in Photoshop and I have the PSD if you have any suggestions. The background is one really big image and I'm trying to avoid it looking blurry by shrinking it slightly. This would only cause a problem were I forced to write a long page. Comments? Suggestions? Harsh criticism is well tolerated
  6. I use PHP for my login scripts. I can't remember what it was called though. Argh :DAnyways, PHP/MySQL seems to be the best method that I've tried out. I'd recommend searching for free/paid login scripts on google or hotscripts.com to find one that's good for you.
  7. It's all in the CSS. Edit the values there. Percent values often change per browser but they maintain a more streamlined viewing of the site, I believe. You might also want to validate the CSS (link it to your styles document) to find out other issues with it. Edit: Fixed link
  8. Again, awesome fractal. Again, text could be a little bigger. And again, 9/10
  9. I love how it looks like a spider web. I don't really have anything bad to say about this one, except the text could be bigger (it's probably just me).10/10
  10. Yay fractals! The fractal, gridlines, and border look really nice. I don't think it would hurt for the text to be a little bit bigger. The color's fine but it's a little bit hard to spot if you don't pay attention to the little things. Lovely fractal though
  11. Really nice background and text. Not so sure about the render because it has gold tones whereas the background probably has more silver tones. 8.5/10
  12. I'd say 9/10 because of the font, but it's awesome otherwise. Great job
  13. Beautimous! I love how they all seem to exude a different tone. My definite favorites are the blue and red because they seem so vibrant. Did you make these yourself?
  14. Holy crap - Age 5? The last age I remember is Age 2 and I was there from Age 1 as well...jeebus.I was pretty high up in the rankings before it got to the point where I'd have to check it at least 5 times a day (like these forums ) so I wouldn't miss anything or lose too much money. I always tried to buff up my defenses before I went to sleep.
  15. I know I spend half an hour or more on most everything I do in Photoshop. I also waste about twenty minutes finding out what to do in the first place. Also, there's no way Michael can have that motto. I am the queen of sugary chocolate cereals, most especially Cocoa Puffs
  16. Ruh-oh *headdesk*. I only saw one post and I didn't see what forum it was in (assumed it was gaming) so I didn't bother. Good call though.
  17. Psh. I'd try it at home any day - just my dog and I. Doggies love lava :(But first I have to tear down the roof, build a volcano that connects partially to the backyard so we can get some actual lava flow, have it connect to the magma inside the earth, and then let it loose. It could be like a neighborhood themepark. But when to start? The questions are endless
  18. I'm going to give my vote to Kubi (I assume it's 3:1 in Kubi's favor now) simply because his background is nicely filled in and doesn't leave any odd white spots lke Phyre's. Phyre may have a better render to work off of, however. The Wolverine is kind of wonky with the colors you've chosen for the background, Kubi. The text too could use some work. On Phyre's, the text is hard to read because of the selection of colors and the bevel. I'd go with a plain white with some sort of sketchy something to fit in theme with the background. There's my review
  19. Pfft. I don't need a zoo. Penguins migrate into my backyard every summer to take advantage of drought and horrible heat. It's like a penguin holiday - every day!
  20. Only slightly, but no worries, OMGZ THOSE SEARCH ENGINES ARE THE BEST. Who cares about Google? I want server errors! I was too late to post my "sarcastic response" standard post so I'll stick with rooting for the underdog. I advocate Highway 61 now. THANK YOU FOR ENLIGHTENING ME.
  21. I generally like playing GTA even though I don't own a PS anything. I have high hopes for it however.
  22. But it's not small. Guimp is so cute and tiny! I kept clicking on the home icon instead of the link. Frustrating, but so cute! And for the record, that was the first time I've lost a Pong game in a while. The bat doesn't move and the ball is so tiny
  23. OooooooooOOOOOoooh. Nifty!Once again, I <3 Google. If they made a browser, I'd probably take it over Firefox (omgz blasphemy).
