What Mmorpg Is Everyone Addicted To Right Now? LEAVING OUT WoW.
Alegis replied to Rokuso's topic in Computer Gaming
The first M stands for Massive, so it isn't just 'any' game. It means on a big server, whereas for example FPS games are spread over various smaller servers with games of up to 20 people. I wouldn't call "drugwarz" or any other browser (text) game the same, even though it is on one database, as you do not meet up with the players in an extensive virtual word. There is also a huge difference in Browser experience than a launcher. An MMO does take time to get in, especially RPG where you level the character. It's an investment in one character rather than the quick FPS game. To each his own. -
http://www.somethingawful.com/ has a 'awful link of the day' daily. I remember that site you just linked, and I can't remember a more horrendous sight.Unfortunately still a bucketload of "welcome to '90" sites still out there.

What Mmorpg Is Everyone Addicted To Right Now? LEAVING OUT WoW.
Alegis replied to Rokuso's topic in Computer Gaming
Currently playing 52h/week of WoW, I guess that warrants me being quite addicted. It's why I'll have to quit very soon again for coming exams. Well it's a basic element of MMORPG's, just like FPS is *run* *shoot* repeat. However WoW made fantastic changes in quests with The Burning Crusade (bomb dropping) and many play WoW for the instances/raids, which isn't comparable to mere farming but co-op for encounters. How come? AFAIK it's still an MMO, and the most popular one. Wouldn't make sense at all to exclude it from the topic (see title).Seems to me you haven't really tried it out. It's the most extensive and most played for a good reason, I'm guessing you haven't done a single instance or stayed in one area. -
A couple of comments on your conclusions. Pos: -Network Center is kinda usefull, but it need some tweaks -Power Management is more advanced (usefull for laptops) -the search bar in the start menu is super -the drop-down menus in explorer are much better than having to go a few folders up and the going to the folder you like And by 'useless' you actually mean, features that are there but you don't use. There is a big difference in not using features than proclaiming these to be useless in software. Windows wasn't catered for your needs, but a wide variety and types of users, of course you won't use certain aspects, don't mistake these for unnecessary aspects of the software. You're not the world.Besides, what is 'useless' about it? There is much more to an interface than the color, the skin and the win-tab thing. I don't use the latter either as I have enough space on my 2 screens, the UI however is more consistent and 'flowing' than before. Not just the skin changed, but how the windows interact with each other and the data on the disks. You said yourself: 'the drop-down menus in explorer are much better'. This is in contradiction with the quote, unless you meant that Aero only applies to the skin. Myself, I find it more pleasant to work with. Exactly, you disable it in a few mouse clicks. People who complain about these feature obviously don't know how to configure even a simple thing, and are better off with a mac anyways. Again, how does that make it 'useless'? You're using 3rd-party software? Fine, but the built-in programs obviously work. Since when are services, required for Windows features, a bad thing. Especially very useful ones like indexing and diagnostic services - unless you like waiting a dozen minutes for simple search results or fancy plain guessing what is wrong with your computer. You said yourself: "-the search bar in the start menu is super". Go to start menu, type in services.msc A list of all services will be displayed, how they're being run, and what they do. You'll see not that many are booted at start, you can disable some you don't use. 'Shitload' is exaggerated and also quite stupid, no devices means no features. Very slow? What made you come to that conclusion (I'm curious), think you're a bit paranoid about DRM even though none of your data is modified. No problems here and first time I hear it is that SLOW. Never heard of those programs, but the more popular certainly did. Obviously not every program is compatible with a certain system, and it's going great. Tried running those in compatibility mode? Same, also only need a firewall for outbound. Wonder when zonelabs gets running - nero and other AV like Nod32 have been long compatible.

Good to hear that you're enjoying your OS. Bear in mind other's have their reasons to enjoy theirs, so in case you want a fair poll you'd better try not to show your choice too much as well as denigrating those that choose other than you.My only problem with avid linux fans is their cries of superiority and frowning down on the heretics using some corporate software. Free and open-source stuff is good, enjoy it - but try not to parade.

One Way To Earn Money Online (not Some Silly Scam).
Alegis replied to Chesso's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I can see why it's more pleasant to 'work' while at your PC, but it is way more effective to get up and do a real job. Or be more creative and work as a writer on the web - not some silly affiliate clicker. -
I've been experiencing the opposite actually, and have yet to encounter a BSOD or system crash. I've been using retail version it ever since RTM was released. User account control? The first thing I switched off. Go to control panel -> user accounts -> disable UAC. Done. The main con is the requirements. I have a high-end gaming PC, and thus I experience no slowdowns and such and my FPS is actually higher or at the very least the same as an XP with this hardware. Of course the power consuming options can be turned off though, but I understand why those with older hardware are reluctant to move. There are no trials available, but any CD can be installed without a key for 30 days - so if you want to try it out, you can by borrowing a CD from a friend. Driver support has been great with this release. Programs like Nero that had issues first have been resolved, I think there is still one with dreamweaver. If you aren't held back because of the hardware requirements, I wouldn't worry about the patching. There is no need to wait for a service pack as there was with XP, consider that the development time of Vista was considerably longer. Updating is also much easier now it is built in to vista and no longer operating with a website. My main pro reasons would not be the alt tab switch thing, but ease of use everywhere. It's more pleasant to work with in almost all aspects. i'd say you try before you buy.

I'm waiting for the PC version, and as usual they haven't announced anything yet. They threaten with each version that they won't release a PC version because of piracy, but eventually they will anyways as it's still money in the pocket. I guess they're prepared to avoid another hot coffee incident. Those in New York who are upset are morons who don't understand the medium. There are a dozens of movies taking place in NYC that obliterate the city or demonstrate crime shown there, but a game would be taking it too far. I like the new setting and look of the city. It's a smaller mass than San Andreas, although they aren't wasting space on huge fields and stuff like that. I think I'm going to replay San Andreas soon. There has been an interview in gameinformer magazine, and while I will not post a link of the entire enterview typed out I will link to a summary of what was said; http://www.gta4.net/news/3857/gta4-world-pes-subscribers/ Does look neat and seems well worth the extra wait

That is troublesome. I haven't been using anything else over the years, but it seems to me hotmail updated their system. It's a good option. You could also go with a free e-mail host that supports pop3 (or whatever it's called) to allow you to retrieve your emails with programs like Outlook Express.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Come to talk about this game
Alegis replied to iGuest's topic in Computer Gaming
It's not certain that guy is the protagonist, but seems very possible since he stated he had the criminal background which matches previous GTA games. It's definitely taking place in Liberty City (LCPD is seen on the police cars) and some have recognized some matching places with New York. New York City seems to have shown its displeasure with GTA taking it's setting there, which is absolutely ridiculous if you take into account they made no reaction to all the previous movies where New York city blows up or crimes take place, and the actual criminal record there. Seems gaming is a medium too many don't understand. It was just a teaser though, but it looks great. I'll definitely be looking forward to this game with great anticipation, alas I'll have to wait a while for the PC release. -
Think it's tough to say who coined that word, it felt natural to everyone and frankly I don't care.Well I knew I would be rather busy after the Wii release date and it would take a while for more quality titles to come out, but I had good faith in that and got one ASAP. I certainly don't regret it with Twilight Princess and the Wii nights with friends playing Wii Sports, or especially Wii Play. Twilight Princess and Wii Sports were all I needed for a nice launch, and the game was definitely worth it.Wii play seems to be getting bad reviews here and there, I reckon they expected huge mini-games. These do nicely, and is the best game for buck (~โฌ4 here) I ever purchased. The Tank mini-game is very addictive to proceed in the levels with 2, still haven't finished that game as it becomes very difficult. There are some titles I'm still interested in playing and I reckon I will play soon enough. It's an innovative console I trust will get more and more interesting titles soon since it's unexpected success.

Real game programmers have access to sound artists in their team. I'm not sure what kind of game programmers you're looking for, but it is evident from credits on all kind of games that at least one person is responsible for creating the music. Format isn't a problem as it can be converted, and the preference changes on which engine used. The mark of quality is more important. The longer the background music, the better. Music has to fit the atmosphere and many flash programmers take existing music from a popular game in that genre, for example adventure games will lean towards Zelda for example. If the music is subtle (not drawing too much attention, it's background after all) that's a bonus point.

My Best Work Yet Nice new photoshop sig
Alegis replied to Arkane's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
Very decent, the text is more subtle and nice than your current one. I'm not a big fan of sigs but it is good work. It's also in my opinion a good evolution to minimize in width, better forum layout. -

Well presented, Google and blizzard had some funny pages this year.I still think Internet ruined April Fools. It's not that much 'fun' anymore when you already expect it beforehand and with all the other crap lying about. -
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Come to talk about this game
Alegis replied to iGuest's topic in Computer Gaming
I thought San Andreas was pretty ok, good new features but I still preferred Vice City for it's awesome atmosphere. GTA IV looks great too, Liberty City all over again with the Russian mobs. -
Java's plus points are also it's negative points (slow, JVM vs universal). So choose wisely. There isn't a 'best' coding language, some are more adept for certain tasks than another or you just feel much more comfortable with them. Myself I'm practicing with Java, it's not too difficult when you 'master' one to use the other with great skill. I'd say you're better off practicing object oriented programming with java, and later on you can easily switch to C++ if the need arises. It helps to have a good book. Try the Java cookbook. I could come up with some other great names later.

Works excellent here. More smooth and reliable than XP ever was for me. Maybe we're not talking about the same Vista here, or you need to grow up from such prejudices. People who come here ask for hardware advice from people they expect are reasonable in comparing programs. This isn't the chit chat room, and people could make bad purchase decisions based on other's unfounded emotions. But I digress, it's about this guy seeking help. Here is a feature chart of the versions, although you're better off with more concise comparisons of course in case you're still not sure on which version to obtain Which was true for previous Windows versions. Bear in mind that Vista has gone through a much longer testing phase than XP and pre/post launch has been excellent in driver support. Despite that though many seem to think it must need a service pack in order to be usable because of XP. I doubt you'll see "many" patches soon as they aren't in a dire need as you presume. Don't expect to download 2 service packs and 100 KB updates when you finally install your operating system. Yes, it will work. The question is if it work adequately (which is certainly possible, saint-michael - and no I don't work for the NASA on a supercomputer so you can hold that joke). You're right in assuming that the memory and video card are more important factors in deciding in whether or not it will run great. All I can say now whether or not your motherboard will cause a bottleneck, which doesn't seem to be the case. I'd say to get at least 1 GB of RAM. not just for Vista alone, but applications in general - having 1gb of ram at least is very enjoyable.

No Music Playing Windows Vista, no sounds, nothing
Alegis replied to jimmy89's topic in Hardware Workshop
Make sure it is set to the correct device (volume mixer, top left).Or rather, go to control panel ยป SoundAnd make sure the correct device has been set, and in case anything is displayed there that could indicate something is amiss. In case you use soundMAX integrated digital HD audio, select the speakers. I can only be more specific about this when you are more specific on which card you have with which drivers and what is displayed there in the Sound control panel. -
You can't wield a big sword if it's too heavy for you. While Adobe Photoshop is capable of doing more, they're hardly features you as an amateur will scratch. It would be easier for you to work with a program like GIMP or Paintshop pro which are a bit easier to understand. It doesn't matter how good or powerful something is if you struggle too hard to learn how to use it.

English isn't German, not every in a phrase starts with a capitol letter (and yes I'm aware that it only counts for nouns in German). The website doesn't seem to work, a typo?

What? Will we be forced to use a newer version of Windows on other systems that is more stable and user friendly? THIS IS MADNESS!! Save the children! There are plenty more reasons to purchase a system than security, especially since many schools and libraries already use filters to block certain aspects of internet. You won't easily find mac or exotic Operating Systems installed on public machines because of compatibility and people knowing how to use it. I hope you realize this argument doesn't hold much value. Excuse me? You haven't heard of user accounts then. It's simple, the account people use to do their stuff is not an administrator account. They won't be able to change system files and you can opt to make sure they can't install programs. Oh yeah, rather than upgrading the hardware we'll just throw everything away and buy new, more expensive, macs. You're a financial genius.

Should We Delete The Gaming Forums? A poll on the games forum
Alegis replied to Markymark2's topic in Computer Gaming
I understand that there are a lot of cheap posts by Runescape and other game players alike. Yet it does have some value in answers getting returned. -
Might as well have something to show for it if your computer is capable of running it.As xboxrulz said, you won't have troubles with XP programs. But I'll just confirm for you that Adobe Photoshop works here without any problems at all.

This is strange. Apparantly Pi day exists for quite a while, yet it's the first time I hear of it, and then from several sources. Happy Pi day! Oh the great things Pi has done for us.

Firefox is absolutely great, with such a variety of mods. Many aren't really too fond of thunderbird, as they kind of expect a 'firefox with all the mods' for mail versions.
