  1. If they're already dead I wouldn't buy stuff for it. I've opened several drives using simple watch-screwdrivers (instead of torx) and some pliers. Believe me, you'll need some serious amount of force to get the lid screws off (don't forget those under the stickers). I'm not sure about the platter (the one I removed involved an axe, a few heavy stones, a hammer, a bechscrew and a lot of anger), but you'll only have to remove 6 torx screws. This is what that platter looked liked (believe me, they are very hard)
  2. Well, multi-tasking is the fututre, but I think M$ is overdoing it a bit . Fuji sounds a bit stupid to, but so does Vista. If this is true (probably not, because there have already been rumours about "Vienna" as being Vista's succesor), then I hope M$ will choose a cool name for it's new OS instead choosing one that sounds absolutely stupid (like Vista).Anyway, they have to money for it, they have plenty of teams that do dedicated work (Windows, Office and whatever they produce).
  3. Info: url: http://www.cabspace.com/ my site: http://wutske.cabspace.com/ 100MB Disk Space 1 Gig/day Bandwidth FTP access no serverside things like php, database, ... are offered I'm pleased with this webhost. It's very basic, php won't work, but I don't have any need for it. There is plenty of storage space (altough I'm already at 75Mb ) and there's a serious bandwith per day. The speed is okay, about 200kb/s but response time is about average. As far as I remember, there's isn't any referrer check, so it might work as a filehost, but you must have at least a main page (you get 7 days to replace the original one, after that, your account will be terminate). I don't know if they check whether you are using it as a webhost or file host, but I'd suggest using it as both. The control panel is simple (to no surprise). You can see some fairly basic statistics, there's a simple file manager, you can alter some information about the website and you can submit the website to an index. So, I'm very pleased with it, my jAlbum works perfect and I'm happy
  4. Bwa, I don't care, it's under my desk so I hardly see the front of my case. And who cares about esthetics, as long as it works and as longs as it's more or less quiet. And the aerogateII doesn't match my case either
  5. My computer, I think 3-4 years old ? (I'll check it later) AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (overclocked to 3200+ of course ) Thermalright SLK947U + coolink 92mm Abit NF7-s v2.0 2*256Mb DDR400 2.0-2-3-11 (Twinmoss/M-Tec 5D) Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9600Pro (128Mb) Realtek 10/100 Mb PCI Extra Yamaha DS1 sound card (for headset if I want to toy around with VirtualDJ) WD120Gb SATA LiteOn DVD 16x Nec DVDrw ND2510A Aerogate II Sony E-220 17" CRT (got it for free, it has some damag, probably dropped on the streets or something, but works fine, except for the missing power button and it sometimes won't wake up) Digital (<->Compaq<->HP) 15" CRT, works fine @ 1152*864@70Hz Logitech Wireless MM keyboard (from wireless desktop deluxe) Logitech Optical wired mouse (replaces the wireless model that came with the keyb) Ozaki HM30 Q3 surround (great set, except the noisy front speakers) Bluetinum Bluetooth USB dongle (piece of crap, it lost it's license, so only 5Mb transfer possible using bluesoleil) HP Laserjet 4L HP Deskjet 690C Artec AM12U Plus USB scanner HP Jornada 680 (just for fun ) Almost the whole setup The computer (after more than a year back in it's case )
  6. drooool . I wish I had 2 LCD screens, this 17"CRT and 15" CRT are just using so much space on my desk. To bad big LCDs need good graphic cards for playing (LCD = only one good resolution) and I won't go for anything lessn than 1280*1024
  7. You can use the same serial on multiple installations, if you have a corporate edition and the proper amount of licenses. I'm not sure about that. Not every piece of hardware is the same, even if it has the same name, some internal number might have changed.
  8. I've checked it using the Userhealth program and oOo Calc. The average time is ~3:30, altough this is absolutely incorrect, because in june I had exams, so I hardly spent time online (tough my computer was running and 65% of biology was to be studied using ppt) and the first 2-3 weeks of July I went working. But I guess it's probably something near 4-4:30 at average. I'll see when I have gathered more data
  9. The freezer trick is an old trick and yes, it sometimes does work. My theory about this is, that freezing the drive makes everything 'shrink' but not at the same ratio. The heads probably shrink more and thus won't hit the platters anymore (this is only for broken heads). My other theory is that this slows the hdd down thus making it more reliable (just like a CD/DVD-drive, it will read less errors at lower speeds). And to prevent condensation, you could wrap it with foam.
  10. That's nice, except maybe for people suffering from paranoia .I think there is one big downside about this project, being shadows. If the projector is behind you, then there is no use of this technique.
  11. erm, Vmware is free, Qemu is free, why paying for Win4lin if there are free alternatives (one former commercial even !).The real problem is, this is stupid ... because you run linux and you're using windows, what's wrong in this picture and it will run slow, both OS will run slow, because you'll need at least 256Mb of RAM for the virtual machine on wich windows is running (you can go lower, but then you'll heavily rely on the hdd)
  12. It's a good idea and I hope many people donate so this service can stay alive.I think this is a good option for those with slow internet connetion or limited download volume (like some student connections allowing only 250Mb/month )
  13. I, as an AMD fan, must admit that the Conroe is a good chip, it's fast, rather cheap and even runs cool.On the other hand, AMD has dropped it prices seriously (or is going to).Unfortunately, I must say that Intel has been stupid. The Conroe isn't cheap to make, Intel just sells it for less money than usual. The downside is that they gain less money (the same goes for AMD).The problem is that 1 million less means they can't invest that million in new technology. It's probably not explained that well, but I hope you get the point a little bit, just keep in mind it's not as bad as it looks.
  14. What snutz411 says is correct. The best way to build a pc in a car (or truck) is by hiding it as much as possible and by making sure you can remove and hide everything that can't be hidden (like touchscreens).Security system are nice, but they are useless (altough they make can help when it comes to ensurances). You can break into a car and steal it in the middle of a crowded street and NOBODY (except maybe those who thing they are heros) responds, even if you have a car alarm.

    Tri-boot?

Honestly, no. Having the best of 3 worlds on one HDD is nice, but not if it's split in three. The best of 3 worlds in one OS would be nice, tough such thing will never exist. It also won't offer you any improvements if your data isn't accessible in each OS (only FAT32 partitions work on every OS, but it has it's limits).P.s. and don't forget, MacOS is linux (or Unix, whatever ).P.s.2. Installing Linux on a IntelMac isn't very simple atm.
  16. I think it would be more expensive than buying a simple PCI videocard (even 2nd handed will work well enough). And don't forget this, it's addictive (like nightfox already said ) and not only for PS, but you can have MSN (or Mercury, Gaim, ...) on one screen and have another program (FF, Filezilla, StudioMX, ...) on the main screen. P.s. 3 screens are cool too
  17. hmmm, those images look familiar, we have a "teach linux in 24 hours" book in our library, and it uses the same kind of images and layout. To me it looks like this is an open dir to me.
  18. I know there is an option that makes windows not to save any changes made to the system configuration, but I don't know where it is (somewhere in the registry I tought). In meantime, he can change his acount to a root account, change the setting, reboot and changeing his acount back to a limited user.
  19. For the new version of my website I'm trying to make a very simple newssytem based on php. Each newsitem will get it's own html page, something like this: <html><head><title>Welkom</title><link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="../style.css" /></head><body><p>HERE COMES THE TXT</p> </body></html> All other data will be stored in a file called news.inc <?php$news = array();$news[] = '110706_jovolka.html';$news[] = '110706_lorum.html';$news[] = '090706_welkom.html';$title = array();$title[] = 'Over JoVolKa';$title[] = 'Lorum Ipsum';$title[] = 'Welkom';$date = array();$date[] = '11/07/06';$date[] = '11/07/06';$date[] = '09/07/06';?> And the main news page is something like this: <html><head><title>JoVolKa Unofficial News</head><link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="../style.css" /></head><body><?phpinclude ("news.inc");$iVariabele = 0;foreach( $news as $id => $file ){ if ($iVariabele < 8) { echo '<div class="title"><table width="100%"><tr class="title"><td class="title">'; echo $title[$id]; echo '</td><td class="date">'; echo $date[$id]; echo '</td></tr></table></div><div class="news">'; include ("$news[$id]"); echo '</div>'; $iVariabele++; }}?> </body></html> Now, the problem is that it does show the first newsitem (0 in the array) completely wrong. It does not show the title, date, but only the news, but it also ignores the lay-out, only for that first item, the rest is okay. I've been doing some test: <html><head><title>JoVolKa Unofficial News</head></head><body><?phpinclude "news.inc";print_r($news);echo ' Date 0 = ' . $date[0] . ' Title 0 = ' . $title[0] . ' File 0 = ' . $news[0]; ?></body></html> results in: Array ( [0] => 110706_jovolka.html [1] => 110706_lorum.html [2] => 090706_welkom.html ) Date 0 = 11/07/06 Title 0 = Over JoVolKa File 0 = 110706_jovolka.html When I change that to <html><head><title>JoVolKa Unofficial News</head></head><body><?phpinclude "news.inc";print_r($news);echo ' Date 0 = ' . $date[0] . ' Title 0 = ' . $title[0] . ' File 0 = ' . $news[0]; echo '<div class="title"><table width="100%"><tr class="title"><td class="title">'; echo $title[0]; echo '</td><td class="date">'; echo $date[0]; echo '</td></tr></table></div><div class="news">'; include ("$news[0]"); echo '</div>';?> </body></html> then it in fact only does the include thing. Who can help me ???
  20. No way I'm going to do that. I have a €15 logitech mouse and it just works great, it's a simple mouse, 2 buttons and it just looks & feels like every average mouse (no indents for your fingers).I must say that I don't like those mice that is so-called ergonomic (the indents I stated in the previous line), it just doesn't give me the freedom to grab and use the mice, because there's only one way to hold it good ...
  21. I too remember playing with paintbrush, back in those days it was like a wonder . Aaah, those old days . I've forgotten to mention Vista, I've tried and older beta version (beta 1), but I didn't like it at all, M$ made this version too much for the 'new' users. I don't need all those explications, tips, hints & txts (same goes for SP2), I know what I have to do and I know what I'm doing (that's what I now like about Win3.1x & 9x, no annoying and useless hints & tips). @austiniskoge: "Linux is twenty million times more reliable and stable than Windows", this just depends on how you configure windows & linux. With the right apps, windows is almost absolutely stable (I don't have virusses & other crap and the only crashes occur due to hardware (overclocking) errors). The same conclusion can be made for linux, if you malconfigure it, it won't work, it just depends on what you do with it. "it comes in every flavor of the rainbow!" maybe this is the problem with linux, what version is best for me ? There are too many choises.
  22. One last thing I'd like to say. It's also the combination of hardware that makes or breaks the system. An SLI 7900GT in combination with a Sempron AM2 is useless, because the CPU can't deliver enough data for the VGA, so it can't work full speed.Other example: replacing the HDD in an Alienware game computer with an old 3GB hdd, all those superfast and superexpensive hardware has to wait for the ol' and slow hdd (transfer speed ~ 5MB/s).
  23. The same as XP. M$: "There are a lot of security implementations, this is the safest version of windows ever made ..." A month later, a lot of leaks are found and loads of viri are created. Don't be surprised, it's impossible for M$ to make windows completely safe, the source code for Windows has to be HUGE, you can't find every problem or leak in it, it would take you ages.
  24. I have had DOS, Win3.1(1), Win95, Win98SE and WinXP (and few hans-on with Win2k, WinME and Linux).Worst of the list was WinME, it's not only plain ugly, but it's the worst one when it comes to stability (crashed after installation ).For speed, I prefer Win98SE, it's light and simple (same goes for Win95, but Win98 is an upgraded Win95).When it comes to hardware, I prefere WinXP, plug&play has never been that easy (hardly no drivers for USB stuff needed), altough it's not perfect (but what is ?)Win3.x was great too, I liked it a lot back then (I couldn't work with DOS, I was a bit too young back then ). I think I'm going to dig up my Win3.1 floppies (yup, still got the whole thing on floppy, I even have some office apps on floppy ).DOS, couldn't work with it back then.My conclusion is WinXP, it has several features that I can't miss today (image & fax viewer is one of them, but also hardware support, most support atm, ...).Last but not least, LINUX, it's great, but it's too hard and I'm too lazy atm (things take to much time to be done on linux, it takes me a week to do something on linux while I can do the same thing on windows in a day).
  25. #3; ok, this is great, much more easy than changing it in the registry #5; must have for everybody (programs are less dependant on explorer) #6; Avoid this tweak, altough foreground applications get higher CPU priority, background application could hang while doing cpu intensive tasks (gaming, encoding/decoding, ...). You can also forget doing some heavy multitasking on a single or even multi core (if the amount of tasks > the amount of cores). Most tweaks online are more or less useless (not to mention that most tweaks are to be found a billion times on the net). The only good tweaks are those that disable load on the system (disabling luna/glass/...) or those that change hardware settings (memory timings, FSB, overclocking, ...).
