  1. Yup, that would fit, but since the computer can't handly more than 1Gb, you'd have to remove the memory that's already in it. Concerning the previous post, do a complet check of your hard disk, it might be damaged. btw, when is the last time you've installed windows ? Recommended is to reinstall windows every year (with a complete format of your hard drive), it keeps the registry fresh, it keeps the hard drive empty (no unused files anymore) and it removes everything at startup that you won't need anymore.
  2. I need some information for a school assignment. I have to find a windows alternative to umask (info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umask ), but after hours of googl'ing, I haven't found anything yet. The onlything I have found so far is the set recursive file permissions to the root directory, tough that isn't exactly what I'm looking. It's also possible that their isn't a real alternative, that's a part of the assignment too . Thanks in advance.
  3. wait ... no floppy, no cd, no bootable cd support, what kind of junk is that ? I remember having such problems before and since I can't remember how I fixed, I probably used the last know working configuration option .If that doesn't work, you might just transfer your brothers hard disk to your computer to copy the right files.
  4. I've used their stuff before. I mean, it looked good, but I quickly get bored of all those fancy looks and I didn't like the resource it eats ... even the default windows Luna theme didn't last longer but a year . I prefer the basic win9x theme, it's fast, it's compact and at least I don't get bored with it .So I can't provide you with any fancy screenshot, but only with the advise that it's a resource eating combo
  5. wait, I'll do the oposite of what you want (and no, I'm not female )."My" distro is Slackware11.0 and while it works great, I must admit that it costed me a lot of time and research before I got working what I had to get working (except maybe wine). Slackware isn't exactly the 'easy'-OS like Suse or Ubuntu, most things have to be installed using command line because it uses another method of packages. For beginners I'd suggest to get Ubuntu in combination with easyUbuntu, does all the work for you and seems to work great on a friends' laptop (but it can also be the complete oposite, Ubuntu hardly works on my computer, booting takes ages and when it's finaly loaded, I have to wait minutes before it does what I want it to do), it's just a matter of luck .Suse isn't bad either, altough it feels a bit big, slow, heavy ... anyway, everything else but responsive, but hey, that might be me .
  6. + the boxed version usualy come with a longer warranty period (3years vs 1year or something like that), but actually, you'll only get those 3 years if you use the stock cooler and the recommended thermal paste ... like anyone does so .
  7. my OS would be easy to use, yet it would be a very powerfull OS. The installation of the OS should be straight-forward, detailed (in levels) and easy to make it unattended. Installing extra software should have monitoring so that when a program is uninstalled, (nearly) nothing should be left.As for hardware, drivers should have 3 settings, default, fast and save, for those who want to get the best speed at cost of some stability (in terms of stable for several days), same goes for kernel optimalisations like they are available in linux (but, drivers and kernel should be seperated)The command line should be as powerfull as the linux commandline, yet for those who can't or won't work with it, everything should be available in a GUI.The OS should also be compact, I don't realy care if it uses 10Gb or so on a hdd, but it should be lightweight (few resources) and fast (I'd say it should combine the looks of KDE/Windows9x and the speed of XCFE).So, it would be some kind of mixture between windows and linux .
  8. seems okay to me. The stock heatsink that comes with the AMD cpu's is actualy very good, they cool good at a modest sound production. The memory seems a bit overkill if you ask me, DDR2-800 is indeed faster than DDR2-400, but you won't realy notice it when you're working on it.
  9. There's a small catch on using linux. If you have windows installed on an NTFS partition then you should be very carefull with wath you do. Linux NTFS drivers are still very buggy when it comes to writing (deleting = writing) especialy when you write a lot of data. A small amount normaly should pose not too many problems, but it's best to try windows-based software first.
  10. It might be at it's end, but that doesn't mean it's dead already. There'll still be loads of new apps for Vista & XP, drivers will stillbe developed for XP and XP updates are still available. I even heard M$ is making SP3 for XP, so it's still has a long way ahead even without all the fancy crap that's loaded in Vista (too much crap to be precise).
  11. No it isn't . 2.4 seems to work better with my computer than 2.6. 2.6 seems to have problems with my SATA controller and with my network card. When I have time I'll install Slack11 with 2.6 kernel on another partition and try configuring it the right way and then I'll try installing wine.
  12. oh why did I have to throw away that Commodore . Sigh, never grew up with it, but sometimes I wish I had.I would have loved to try out this litlle OS on a commo, back to basic, no fancy graphics, no real images, just a lot of simple lines and dots .
  13. tried again, started wineserver in debugmode (-d3). It's completely bugged It's full with things like 000d: open_key() = OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND { hkey=(nil) } 000d: close_handle( handle=(nil) )000d: close_handle() = INVALID_HANDLE { fd=0 } 000d: get_key_value( hkey=0x44, name=L"TitleText" )000d: get_key_value() = OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND { type=-1, total=0, data={} } and it ends like 000b: terminate_process( handle=0xffffffff, exit_code=1 )000b: terminate_process() = 0 { self=1 }000b: *killed* exit_code=1000a: *process killed*Not saving clean key \\MachineNot saving clean key \\User\\.Default/home/phillip/.wine/user.reg: saving key \\User\\S-1-5-4wineserver: exiting (pid=5206) I did some more googl'ing (this time I did found results ) and it seems like I'm not alone ... and it seems like nobody knows what to do I'll try to install the missing libs ... //edit: installing HAL is no-go. Needs 2.6-kernel, and I can't get that one to work descently on my computer ... to bad, no wine for me ... stupid error ...
  14. The best way is IDE. You'll get the best speed when you connect them to different channels (or primary or secondary). If you' put them both on primary, then they have to share the bus.USB is a good option too, it's fast but it tends to use some more CPU and it also has a larger response time (but that's more a problem for a lot of smaller files). So, IDE is your way to
  15. That would be like if your computer was an Xbox360 or PS3 ... cool . Or maybe having an onboard-flash chip that boots into a gaming environement that allows to play games on any OS . I myself switched to linux a week ago. I don't have much experience, but I liked Slackware10.2 so I'm now running Slackware11.0 and I must say, it's a pain in the but to get it running the way it should be, but hell it's much more fun than just pressing a few buttons and having a ready to use OS. At least I'm learning something now . There are 3 main reasons why I actualy switched. 1st was the challenge to switch to linux (that why most people won't use it), 2nd one is because I want to know how to work with linux, 3th reason is because I have linux courses at school (so cool , but he's going a bit slow atm ). Perfect combination to make the switch and I'm a pretty happy linux user atm, it works, it works good, not perfect, not superfast, but it works. I can chat, I can surf, I can compile, I can make website, I can make report, ... don't need more atm. The only thing I'm missing is wine so I can try to get those app from school .
  16. simple: I can't install wine-0.9.23 I've tried the slackware 10.2 package (with kpackage), i've tried the redhat rpm (rpm2tgz -> kpackage), I've tried compiling it, but it keeps giving this annoying message that it can't access something (I gues ~/.wine). (get this when I use winecfg and wine) wine: Unhandled page fault on write access to 0x003ffd80 at address 0x60da3103 (thread 0009), starting debugger...wine: Unhandled page fault on write access to 0x003ffd80 at address 0x608fc103 (thread 000b), starting debugger...err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x6000c04bbash-3.1$ wine: Unhandled page fault on write access to 0x003ffd80 at address 0x608fc103 (thread 000d), starting debugger...err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x6000c04berr:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x6000c04b and then it hangs This is what I get when I do a ./configure --verbose . it says some packages are missing, but I don't think these will cause any problems ... configure: libcapi20 development files not found.configure: Wine will be built without ISDN support. 17. a friend of my has an Acer Ferrari, it's a good laptop, but the screen sucks (glares too much imho). For linux there are 3 options, Ubuntu, Fedora or Suse. Those are 3 'easy' distro's, they have great tools to configure it. A litlle tip for Ubuntu, Easyubuntu ( http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/ ) does even more for you . If you get more experience and want a challenge, get slackware or debian, they are a bit harder and require some more knowledge (or in case you'd want to have a steep learning curve). On the hardware side you'll probably run into a lot of issues because it's a fairly new laptop and linux doesn't recognise that very well (especialy wireless lan might be a problem). Just try it and if it doesn't work, them come and post overhere so we can help you
  18. Let windows automaticly seach for drivers, if it doesn't find one, you should check the lindy site (if the card didn't come with a cd, that one would probably contain the drivers). The download location is; http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (it's slow btw) and I guess you'll need: Drivers for the FireWire PCI Card , of it isn't that, you could try the drivers for the 3-port fireware card (just search for fireware and press F3 a few time, it'll show up ).
  19. I have a SE K700i and the only thing I want to say about that one is that you should avoid it. I know somebody who has a K750i and it's realy a lot better, the camera is good (plus it has a door to prevent dust from getting on the lens), it accepts memory sticks (altough I'm not a fan of MS because it's rather expensive), the memory stick is a lot faster for data transfer (the K700i onboard memory sucks at 17Kb/s ...) and the build quality is a bit better (stickers tend to get loose). But if you realy want a good mobile phone, I'd suggest to look for something more recent, samsungs phones seem to be pretty good (especialy the sliding types). The Nokia N-series seem to be good too, I realy like the ones that have WiFi onboard , but they are kinda expensive. Ow, do check out http://www.mobile-review.com/ , they have tons of good reviews.
  20. 1) make sure you've connected it correctly, you wouldn't be the first that's spending hours looking for options in the OS only to discover you've put it in the wrong jack (and yes, I've had such situations before ).2) Open the windows mixer and look somewhere for settings (on linux now, so I can't exactly say where). Somewhere you can select record, do so and make sure it you have your soundcard selected in the dropbox. If you press ok, the windows mixer should have other sliders. Make sure you have the microphone enabled (you can normaly have only 1 input enabled).3) Enable the advanced settings In the windows mixer (set it back to playback like you've put in in record like in 2) ) . If right, there should be one for the microphone, when you open it there is probably an option for mic boost (+20db), tick this and gently try if it's working (be carefull not to blow up your speakers, 20db is a lot).4) try Audacity to record something (you can try different inputs by choosing them in the dropbox), maybe there's just something wrong with the IM software you're using.Last but not least, go to some computershop and ask if they can test it for you, if the mic is broken, you'll have to return it to the shop.
  21. bof, I don't realy think the SWAP file causes that much stability problems. There are so much other things in windows that can cause problems. Anyway, if you're realy hiding something, then I'd suggest getting some more RAM and disable the swap file. The swap file is a file like any other file and clearing it isn't enough to hide what it contained. Multiple overwrites are the best way to keep it safe .
  22. I'd suggest not to download this tool. M$ stopped support this litlle tool for a reason. I've tried it twice, first time it gave no problem, second time (on a fresh install) it totaly messed up the installation. And like xboxrulez says, shotdown is so important, just press the button and leave the room, there's no need for waiting. Booting time is more annoying, you'll have to wait before you can do something.
  23. I usualy back my data up on severa DVD-rw, unfortunately, this is a very slow and rather unsafe way. Best thing to get is probably a HDD.Here in Belgium I can get a 160Gb @ €60 and a ICY Box Mobile Dock (this is the best way since it connects the hdd to a PATA port instead of USB2.0/FW) @ €25 . This solution costs €0.5/Gb ($0.7/gb ???) and it's much faster than a set of DVD's).
  24. Don't forget to add anti-freeze in the water and insulate everything, hoses, waterblocks, cpu/gpu/nb/... because condensation will occur.Look around on vrzone and xtremesystems on how to insulate your hardware.
  25. it's nice, but useless if u ask me . @abartar: windows won't accept a folder with only a space in it@KDEWolf: that's extreme and totaly not efficient. What about seperated user account, file encryption and some weird folder structure ? Or maybe seperated computers .
