  1. I guess minnieadkins is right. Thanks ... that's something I didnt' know. I thought 'empty=not set'.
  2. Uh-oh ... looks like they've come up with a new way of making money ... from spam! If spammers started paying money for a sure-fire way for spam to reach the victim's inbox then it'll become a bloody nuisance. I'm not too keen on seeing this happen. I get my share of spam everyday and it's not pleasant at all. But whether they pay or not, spamming is still an offence isn't it? And if the web-corporation itself allows emails to bypass spam-filters, that makes them an accomplice and answerable to a court of law right?
  3. Alrighty then ... anything that doesn't have icons on the desktop or any of the 'Microsoft Windows' kind of feel to it is a Windows Environment. That means, we can list it as: Desktop Environments: KDE GNOME CDE XFCE Window Managers: Fluxbox Blackbox WindowMaker Enlightenment Ratpoison FVWM TWM MWM OLVWM That's all I can think of right now. Anyone care to add something to this list? I'm not too sure about the '-WM's . //edit: Changed the name to "Window Managers" and moved XFCE to Desktop Environments. I guess that's right since XFCE does have it's own desktop app called xfdesktop.
  4. Since this topic has been dwelled upon quite a number of times, I think it's best I just point out some of the threads that will help you (or anyone else) decide which is the most suitable distro for you (or them) : http://forums.xisto.com/topic/87973-topic/?findpost=1064333093 http://forums.xisto.com/topic/88320-topic/?findpost=1064335440 http://forums.xisto.com/topic/87448-topic/?findpost=1064329076 http://forums.xisto.com/topic/87911-topic/?findpost=1064332657 http://forums.xisto.com/topic/87763-topic/?findpost=1064331542 http://forums.xisto.com/topic/87049-topic/?findpost=1064326085 http://forums.xisto.com/topic/86802-topic/?findpost=1064324204 I may have missed out some threads, but these threads very much cover a large number of distros. Hope this helps .
  5. Hmm... does Fluxbox count as a window manager? Coz, that's what I use. I've also used a bit of ratpoison, it's a little inconvenient but nice all the same. I still don't understand the difference between a desktop environment and window manager. Could anyone make a listing of what comes under window manager and desktop environment? What about XFCE?
  6. You could try: <?phpif(isset($Announcement))echo $Announcement;?> That should be sufficient, you don't need to add another variable.
  7. Ah yes, sound stupid ... but what if he wins the lawsuit? That's the whole problem with the American way of suing people. You can actually sue anyone over any minor inconvenience and convince a jury that you deserve some monetary compensation.
  8. No ... there is something else that needs to be taken care of, and my guess is it's the media that is used. Because, initially during one of my attempts at making a bootable usb flash drive, I copied the entire contents of the image file as they were into the usb drive and set the bootable flag on. But it didn't work. That's one of the problems I faced while trying to manually create a bootable LiveUSB drive. Here's the link to the page that I followed (unsuccessfully): Run GNU/Linux from a USB drive
  9. Good one. Who knows ... this might have actually happened.
  10. Yea, BartPE is sweet. I've tried it out and it's just great. A Windows LiveCD is a boon for all those guys who clean up infested windows systems. Please do ... but if you follow the MySlax Creator method, it shouldn't take you more than 15min (barring the time to download the stuff) .
  11. My bad . I thought somebody had already said it before me, but since I never came across it before, it made sense to claim all credit and apologise later (like now) if the need arose.
  12. Well... how useful it really will be leaves to be seen. I remember seeing a program on National Geographic (or was it Discovery?) about a guy who designed a radio which would run by winding it up. Once you wind it up, it powers a dynamo which generates electricity to keep the radio running. This was then mass-produced and was sold quite well in Africa. Maybe this is also meant to be the same. But, unfortunately, I think some amount of knowledge or training is required to use a computer. Besides, it's way easier to troubleshoot a radio for problems than a computer. Frankly, I don't see how useful a laptop is when people need food to eat and water to drink. If it's aimed at regular people, I doubt it's of any use at all.
  13. Wow .... paper thin! or thinner? How thin is a piece of paper btw? :)I guess there is no limit to technology. The way it's advancing is just astounding.
  14. I was searching the net on how to create a bootable USB flash (pen) drive and I came across Slax linux. Slax linux is a LiveCD distro which is based on Slackware (one of my favorite distros) which is one of the most stable and rock-solid distros available. One good thing about slax is that it's thoroughly configurable. You can make your own custom LiveCD to use wherever you go. 'Modules' are available for various apps which just have to be copied into a directory on the LiveCD and you're good to go. You can even make your own modules from tgz packages (which is the standard packaging for slackware) by the utility 'tgz2mo'. There are also some customised ISO images available built in Slax for various purposes, but you can always customise one to your liking. A standard ISO image is 181MB, but the minimal ('frodo' installation) is only 40MB without any GUI. The standard image has both KDE and Fluxbox. There is a very easy way to create your customised slax LiveCD or LiveUSB (I coined that term ). MySlax Creator is a windows app which presents you with an easy to use interface (read 'click and select') to create your own LiveCD. It creates the ISO image and burns it directly to your CD or your USB flash drive. You can in fact make your 128MB flash drive a bootable Live Linux installation. After trying for nearly 3 hours to make a Live installation on my flash drive, I came across this utility. The drive was ready in 15min and it worked! Anyone who uses a liveCD extensively for recovery purposes should give this a try. Links: Slax Linux MySlax Creator There is a method to make a LiveUSB flash drive manually using slax but I couldn't get it to work. It would give me a boot error. If anyone can get it to work using this method, I'd appreciate it if you let me know the details about how you did it . Here's the link: Run GNU/Linux from a USB drive Cheers.
  15. Hey now ... this can't be right. I mean, m^e ... are you seriously saying this is a true letter? I mean, it looks kinda weird that they get offended with hindi abuses. I mean, we use hindi, telugu AND english abuses all the time here in chennai. Hehe, it's a good thing the locals don't understand anything other than tamil .
  16. Dang right it wasn't. But that's how these things go. Maybe a year or so in jail would have taught them a thing or two.
  17. You know ... this mod is really cool. I mean, i had to reboot into windows to move some data around in the ntfs partitions and I thought I'd give this a try. The last time I tried to make my system look like a Mac took me 3 hours. But this was the easiest thing in the world. Click to install and reboot .... it changes everything from the bootscreen to the icons and sounds. I think I'll keep this theme for a while. But, since I'm on gentoo most of the time, it doesn't really matter .PS: It doesn't work on 64bit systems. Just in case for people like me who first install the program and then read the 'Readme-first.txt' .
  18. Neat. To create rollover menus and popup menus, CSS is the way to go. Great job .
  19. Motorcycle engines? Those things are even bigger than the water pump we use at home. Geez ... just look at the size of those things. How the heck is anyone supposed to connect them to the system? If you've got to move your computer somewhere else, it'll cause a hell of a problem.
  20. Oh boy, here we go again ... the GTASA kind of issue brought up again about how much videogames influence kids these days. IMO, I'll stick to what my opinion is about videogame violence and R-rated stuff ... blame it on the parents. You don't raise your kids right, they get into trouble. Parents have to take a little more interest in what their kids are doing and the stuff they are involved in. It isn't fair to blame the videogame company for this. And besides ... why the hell was a copy of need for speed in the car at all? It's not like he needed inspiration from the game to win a drag race! Besides ... they were driving Mercs?!!! That's insane! Obviously the parents give these kids more money and freedom than they deserve. I wholly agree with Houdini. Only immature people (or completely reckless people ... yes they are 2 different kinds, but let's not digress) pull things of this sort. In all probability, this couldn't have been the first time these kids raced. They probably do it all the time, but no one notices it until something terrible happens.
  21. Wow! Nice modded case man. No way am I putting pics of my system , it looks terrible. I was on a real budget kick to compromise for my 160gb HDD and got the cheapest case that was available.
  22. Hehe ... I'm interetsted as hell in this stuff, but unfortunately, I can't afford an IPod . Too expensive and I'm not working yet. It's near 22,000 Rupees in India and I can get a comp for 25,000.... but let's not digress . Great article, are those pics of your ipod? Looks great, especially the Doom pic.
  23. Well, it's about time you came out with another sig . This one's not bad, but the text isn't very clear. It looks a bit messy lying below the white streaks. And the color (reddish maroon) blends a little too much with the render's hair. I mean, IMO, a different color ... maybe if you exchanged the text and background colors, it'll look better. Also, try putting the white streaks layer below the text layer.Overall, I would give it a 7.0/10.0. Be warned, this is only MY opinion and not to be taken as the opinion of a connoisseur but rather, of an amateur .
  24. I got the Xisto one. It's right under my avatar. The 'Asta Hosted' image. As for the others, I just wanted a few images for gentoo, slackware, gimp and wordpress and I got them. Not all of them are link back images, but I kinda reduced their dimensions and they 'kinda' look like linkback buttons. But, I'm still curious whether Moonwitch made them on her own or got them from some website. Guess we'll just have to wait till she reads this post .
  25. @wutske: Thanks for the links. I got the Xisto image right under my avatar . That's just what I want to do, but I can't seem to find them. I was wondering whether there was some site dedicated to just this type of images.
