Piracy Is Spreading - Is it a New Age Culture ? Is it a culture?
abhiram replied to amitbhandari's topic in Software
Well yea, GNU is a nice idea. Too bad bandwidth costs money. If only that were free too . In India, Internet itself costs a tidy sum. Of course, it's come down quite a bit now, but still it's no where near cheap yet. People would rather go out and buy a Windows XP CD for Rs. 100 than download and use Linux. -
No way! I've played GTA3 like a 100 times and vice city a 1000 times! (Ok ... slight exaggeration ) I've even played San Andreas 3 times from start to finish. GTA3 ... I really couldn't complete the whole thing on my own. Had to use cheats sometime in Staunton Island. Vice City ... came uptil 80% or something, but got bored of the stuff then. San Andreas ... I really put an effort to make it to 100% in this one and came upto 97% ... shy of a few races and some stealing. But that's when I gave up. Spent too much time and effort on it. Started playing from the start again .

You can try hiding the specified folder. Look under the tutorial section ... there are atleast 2 tutorials on how to hide it in Windows. If you're using Linux, then do as MasterComputers has said above.

Nice banner. I especially like the way you used the brushes to create the fiery effect to the right of the guy in the armor.

Slackware is an awesome distro and it'll always be one of my favorites. After using 10.1 for six months, I've shifted over to Gentoo and I've never looked back. The things I've learnt with Slackware sure came in handy when I started out with Gentoo. Of course, Gentoo takes some amount of tiem and work to get things cracking, but Slackware is up and ready in 15min with KDE. As regards your ATI drivers, maybe you can try getting the latest drivers from the site and try it out. Also, most slackware users, immediatly after installing, upgrade their kernel to 2.6. Maybe you can try it out and see if it works better for you. Getting 10.0 might be difficult now. Besides, all the programs on it are way out-dated. I would suggest you get 10.2 and work on it to make it better. Always good to have a customised and fine-tuned Linux system .

FC5: VS-FTPD Won't Accept Connections FC5
abhiram replied to nightfox1405241487's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Have you tried checking out /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf ? Chances are that there's something commented out by default which you need to uncomment before it'll start working. After that, run /etc/rc.d/init.d/vsftpd restart as root -
Pirated Copies Of Vista Wont Look Slick
abhiram replied to shiv's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Well, that's for sure. This thing is going to piss off a lot of loyal customers of Microsoft and probably won't affect the people who use pirated stuff. The pirates obviously will look at this like a new challenge and will definitely be able to crack it. Someone always does. -
Makes perfect sense to me .

GTA San Andreas B-)It's the greatest. I'll just take a bat and go around beating people in the neighborhood down and taking their money . Then, steal a plane or helicopter and enjoy the view, or maybe crash land it and jump out with a parachute.Best thing is ... if i get busted or wasted, I get to start all over again. Stuff like that doesn't happen in real life .

LMAO That's the best. You know ... inspite of there being so much hatred and resentment for Microssoft, it isn't stopping people from buying and using their stuff. -

Didn't you have the Slackware install disk? Disk 1 can be used to boot and fix stuff like this. I remember restoring my bootloader using the slackware disk when I had to reinstall XP. Also, another way to get a shell directly from the bootloader if you're using GRUB is to edit the command by pressing 'e' and then entering this at the end of the line and booting it then: init=/bin/bash That worked for me when I had access to a campus server running FC3 . PS: Off topic, but just noticed that this is my 500th post. Yay!!!

That's a pretty cool site. Guess I'm not really all that fast in typing, especially stuff that is very boring and monotonous. Here's my score: Anyone else?

Glad to see someone shares my point of view. I used to use Norton myself, but then one day, I reinstalled the system and decided to install the PC-Cillin (2002) that came bundled with my Motherboard. Absolutely no problems at all and the builtin firewall has never given me problems whatsoever. System is actually faster thanks to the low memory usage of PC-Cillin.

I remember going to a typing institute back when I was 13 years old. But I quit before I learned to type the lower row and the numbers row. But it didn't really matter, as I could pick that up quite easily and I really wasn't considering typist as a career opportunity .How does one find out how fast they can type? Do you use a stopwatch to keep track of the time and then count the number of words you've typed? Or is there any software that'll give you your exact WPM?

Microsoft Hates OpenOffice
abhiram replied to nightfox1405241487's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I use Openoffice all the time (except when I have to submit a doc file, that's when I open it in MS-Office just to make sure the layout is fine). As far as my requirements go, it's just great. Of course, anyone who has used MS-Office will definitely have no problem using OpenOffice at all. Because, from the looks of it, both OpenOffice Write and Math have many features that are there in MS-Office and most of them in similar places. For example, if you've ever tried to sort data in Math according to a particular column, it looks just like MS-Office, even found under the same menu (Data -> Sort). But, I just feel that OpenOffice has quite some way to go before it gets accepted as anything other than a free (and very good) clone of MS-Office. -
I remember my parents warning me about setting the volume too high on my Sony Walkman (anybody remember those things? They played tapes ) when I was a young kid. It's no surprise. Loud music never is good for your ears. Trying to overcome outside noise by increasing the volume in your IPod isn't a solution at all. Of course, one way would be to get those noise reducing earphones which I've actually tried on in a store (Bose Headphones), but they are huge and cost an arm and a leg. I guess the best thing would be to listen to music when it's quite and you can really enjoy it. That's what I do now.

Hehe ... you sound as if Microsoft was is your mentor. I mean come on, who in this world has actually started with Linux? Everybody has started out on computers with some product of Microsoft. I don't see why you feel obligated to Microsoft. Myself, I started with Dos 3.1 or something, Win95, Win98, WinXP and now Linux. Maybe what you say is true about Firefox. Initially, it might have been incredibly buggy, but atleast they worked really hard and plugged as many holes as they could to make it more secure than IE. Now, this is saying quite a bit since Firefox is completely free and the developers don't get paid, whereas IE has Microsoft's millions behind it and are really trying hard to improve on it. No doubt that Microsoft has got some of the finest brains in the world employed under it, but why are they taking so long to improve something that has been here since long before Opera and Mozilla started making their appearance (remember when Netscape Navigator was a real threat to IE?)? I don't know about IE7 because these days, I'm always in Linux and boot into Windows only to play games. But, atleast it looks promising. Because as Sparx has mentioned, this is one time that they are actually going round looking for what people feel should be included in the new version and trying to implement them.

The Life Of A Comic, As Told By Herbert Filby

Hey, these are not bad. Quite funny. Hehe, just as the character says, "Not drawn very well", but hilarious all the same. -
A Free Graphic Design Program That Could Equal Photoshop?
abhiram replied to evion's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
Well, GIMP is good, as in it's free and has a decent set of features, but it definitely can't beat Photoshop. I've used both, and there are some features in Photoshop that we don't even give a second thought to while using them and are just mind-numbingly difficult to achieve in GIMP. For real professional graphics, I would suggest you put in the effort to try to get hold of a copy of Photoshop from a friend or someone who has purchased it rather than try to learn to use the GIMP. Dont' get me wrong. I've used GIMP quite a bit and GIMP is really cool, but it just isn't photoshop. -
Ah ... a dream come true . Where can I get mine? Finally, I'll be able to download the internet as was my childhood dream .

Well, that's very clear explanation. Thanks, I think I'm gonna use this method. I didnt' want the popup window actually, but I guess it's the simplest way to get it done without killing too many brain cells .I'm a little tied up right now, but, the moment I find time, I'll implement this and let you know how it works out. Thanks .
