Well, you can mess up your hardware whether you're on a laptop or a desktop. The only difference is portability of the machine I've ran Linux on both desktops and laptops. The one thing I can add about linux on laptops, is that my IBM Thinkpad 390E runs on battery for 20 min in Win 2000 Pro and for 3 hrs in Linux. In all my years on linux (about 3 or 4) I have never had major issues. And before you dive into kernel work, learn to use the system, learn to love it, read about it, breathe it... And keep cool. It may look a bit overwhelming at first, but it's very ok

Well.... A lot of people find music in the background on sites extremely annoying, I am one of them LOL. The best advice is.. to not use it. But if you feel compelled, then include a button to stop the music, otherwise people x out to not listen to the music. Uploading it to Xisto, will cost you greatly in bandwidth, since an mp3 is average about 3 to 4MB. .wav is even bigger (let's say HUGE).

Ever had your mom walk in after your nephew was on your pc and you are working on closing about 50 pr0n pop ups?? Then you'll see true shock LOL. Anyhow, I use FireFox or Opera, so I don't have much pop ups. I personally dislike em, but I have less issues with them than I have with those annoying "sync speaker" ads Lycos and Angelfire have. And why do so many use those?? LOL Basically I dislike sound ads, pop ups and then the blinking ads, telling you you won something. Those really can trigger epileptic attacks. And then you have the sites that try to install stuff on your pc.... If popups do show up on my puter, yeah I glance at them, to make sure I don't click wrong or something (some have an X displayed and it looks like the real X button but by clicking on that one you end up messing up your pc) and then close em. Ads like on here, I don't mind, mainly because they're decent ads, that don't blind you, don't deafen you and because they're a source of income, which then allows OpaQue to have this free host

Switching Oses any advice?

Well, in all honesty, I installed Linux Red Hat 7.3 (that was where they were at that point LOL) several years ago, I had only worked in Win 3.11 for workgroups. So I was kinda blown away But you know what, it worked fine, I had NO issues whatsoever. I stayed with solely linux for 3 yrs and then made a dual boot. Since I "blew up" the puter, I am now running a system too old to make into a dual boot (I have tried, it does work, but I have no space left LOL)As soon as I receive my LiveCD from Ubuntu.. I'll be booting in Linux, I miss it... Anyhow, I was a complete newbie to computers itself. Yet, Linux did all I asked and more. -
So Rpg... But In What Time? lets see what we like... :)

Personally I love games with magic, quests, deeds etc, but I can also enjoy future games. However I mostly stick with medieval or pre medieval. I don't know what though, but a lot of the future based games have as setting that the Earth was destroyed and all that (even though it may happen one day) and I don't really like that. I play ShadowMUD, which is in a different world, different time, lots of magic and bad beasts to slay I am mage there (what did you expect with someone whose nickname is moonwitch LOL) and I adore the game. For a long time I also played USI (this is email based) which was à la Star Trek, it was fun, but you constantly have to look up which technology you could use in your posts, because it was not only the technology, but its availability, weight etc. So in the end you stick to what you know, and then if you need something, you "invent" it on the spot. I loved the game but making 4 to 5 posts a week of over 1000 words was too much for me between here, SIF and ShadowMUD (that and I like to eat n sleep too at times)As far as graphical games go, I swear by Phantasmagoria (I lost the discs), Myst, Riven and Exile, Broken Sword and Leisure suits Larry (so I like a laugh too). Oh and sanatorium. THose names may be old, but they're my all time faves. Sadly I only have Exile on a still working disc. But that's the setting I like, a dark, mysterious, even horror game, with "puzzles" to solve. PS. if there are games out there that are similar and more recent, by all means, tell me or pm me the names I have an old computer at the moment, so I can't really play decent games (hence I stick to text based). But in the near future I plan to buy a new one -
I have been using OpenOffice for I think about 4 or 5 years now. I am extremely happy with it There are as far as I am concerned only 2 minor issues that force me to install M$ Office once in a blue moon. Firstly the spellcheck is not as good as the M$ one, but I stopped using spellcheck. My English may not be perfect, but it is not as bad as I've seen from some others The main issue is when I get a school presentation assignment and making it in Impress, as opposed to PowerPoint, will lead to loss of look n feel when it's displayed in PowerPoint. But as I said that's once in a blue moon. Other then that, I adore my OpenOffice, it's one of the first thing I download after a reformat or install. It's stable (provided you don't download the beta ), it looks far better then M$, OpenOffice.org makes efforts to FIX error code, where M$ creates a loop around it and thus makes their program sluggish (even more)

Well, in all my time in Linux, I have never succeeded into getting Wine to work. But if Wine (VMware was recommended to me, but it costs and Wine's free and standard sorta) will run Macromedia Studio MX and PalTalk, then what am I doing in Windows????? Oh I also had major issues with my sound (the microphone and then of course cam and mp3 for some reason). But that's actually everything that stops me from ditching windows for ever. MC, Thanks bunches for this tutorial, I actually printed it out so I wouldn't lose it when I get a new machine (This one is too small for dual boot)

well it's a welsh village... It's lovely there and most of its people can't perfectly pronounce it either. A friend of mine can... it sounds really weird, but they use an abbrevation for it (try writing that on an envellop ) but for the life of me, I can't remember. PS In case this does not make much sense, I just got up and am going back to bed LOL

I personally find it redundant. Most people use Google, and in case they dont, there's Yahoo!, MSN Search, Altavista, and god knows what else LOL. I do think this is Copyright infringement, since the logos are copyrighted and just cut up and pasted together. At one point some Belgian guy came up with the idea to "write" a "google" clone and name it Hoohle, which is how people from the Flanders pronounce google (the pronounce a g as h). He got a pretty nasty email, telling him it was indeed copyright infringement. He was given 24 hrs to remove that site or he would be sued. THe site disappeared, however the legend lives on (mostly in high school geeks in Belgium LOL)I find the code pretty disappointing to be honest.... (the one of YaGooHoo!gle) <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/; <head> <title>YaGoohoo!gle</title> </head> <body style="text-align:center;"> <p><img src="yagoohoogle.png"/></p> <p> <form action="search.php" method="get"> <input type="text" name="q"/> <input type="submit" value="Search"/> </form> </p> </body></html> So simple... I stared at the Google source, which is something I had never done (no idea why though) and it's simple too LOL. Ok, I didn't look at the "search.php" but I am hoping that both will be very much different, if not this guy (author of the site) can be in serious trouble....

I really wish I knew the answers on how to solve it. But maybe it helps to just know you are not alone. I may not have ADHD, but I am diagnosed with Borderline, which is quite a trip on its own. When I was 16, I dropped out of school (I am the fat chick and have always been bullied about that, after a few years of having just about all my things in school vandalised, I gave up and dropped out). I changed school, didn't like it. I love science, which is what I was doing. I went back to a different department of my old school, human sciences (psychology - since I am in Belgium we have a different school system). That was a year of pure glory, I loved it, I had friends, but in the end I didn't make it, because I had so much fun socializing that I didn't study. I again changed school, to study Computer Sciences (Linux system administrating, programming, and web design and a lot of maths and physics) Anyhow, the bullying returned, I started burning myself as coping resource. I gradually went downhill and kept on going. So I retook that year, by now I was in my I think junior grade (11th grade) and I was 18 going on 19. I started seeing a psychiatrist because of the self injury. It didn't help much, since the guy only offered anti psychotic medication and tranquilizers to help me. I ended up taking an overdose on those meds on night, I flatlined 4 times. I was only in the hospital for 3 days, the psych evaluation was a shrink asking me if I felt like going to a mental instution for 6 months, I said no. He then asked "so you're not gonna try it again" I shrugged. And I got released. I did realize what I did was not that good, so I went to the crisis ward for a week or two. You know what? All that medical world thing didn't help ANYTHING for me, in the end I threw away the medication, stopped seeing a shrink and all that. Yes, I blew it, I ruined my life. The side effect of flatlining 4 times, I damaged my short term memory. So I have issues remembering, which creates a very short attention span, if I am stressed I may forget the beginning of my sentence when I am in the middle of the sentence. Of course that doesn't help with school LOL. I still burn myself, but that's ok. I still get semi-psychotic episodes, have nightmares, get all paranoid and have those stupid mood swings (it's like "happiest in the world" to "suicidal maniac" in 5 minutes at times). I can't maintain a sleeping schedule, so I go to school and do ok for a while and then it goes wrong again and again.... Where does my long story leads to? I wanted to share this, so you know there are people out there who understand and are in a somewhat similar position. If you can't get help from a student counselor, try going to a non-school therapist. Or get a social worker type of thing on your case to "fight" your school issues. If you feel retaking that year will be best, by all means go for it. Try to get that. It's your life, and if YOU don't feel good about it, it won't work, believe me, I tried it :PI am now 21, will be 22 this year, and I got nothing. Chances of me going to college, even though I do have the intelligence, are non existing. No diploma here means a worthless, barely enough to live off, income. Also you could try getting in touch with others with ADHD through the internet, they may have good advice for you. Yahoo Groups or MSN communities usually have groups about ADHD as well. (I am a member of a support group for survivor of abuse, and I found it to be really helpful for me)The best of luck - Kay (AKA Moonwitch)

We don't suspend people for just quoting/copying. We don't send out emails about being suspended. You may wish to extract the email headers and forward those to NilsC through pm. And if you are not hosted, then your account can't be suspended. This is just a spam, scam. We are trying to figure out why and how exactly this happens. But that is the very reason we stopped sending out emails about suspending. The reason we react this way on copying or quoting entire articles is because it usually makes a long post worth a lot of credits, which is severly abused. The point is that you earn those credits, not by copying someone else's words. I too use quotes from sites at times, but don't copy entire articles, just a few sentences and then comment. And I always provide a link back to the original article. Or do it like this "I've read in an article (link to article) that so and so on". If you see posts that are copied, you can report them if you want to. We try to 'catch' most, but we're not perfect nor can we read every single post here.

Beginners Php - Object Initialization
moonwitch1405241479 replied to moonwitch1405241479's topic in Programming
I didn't stop trying, I let it lay next to me. If I get tired and frustrated I am not very good moodish (It's probably a woman thing) But I read M^e's explanation, especially the "." part about -> helped me, because Delphi worked similar. I also printed the thread I do feel the example used in the book (with do_foo) is really a very poor one. It would be more handy in some situations, however I have no idea how to think of one as of yet LOL Here's how I get it... <?php class smilie { function make_smile () { [tab][/tab] echo "a joke "; }}$funny = new smilie;$funny->make_smile();echo "$funny";?> The output of this is "a joke Object" without the quotes. I was trying to get this to work, but I got errors... <?php$joke="hahahaha"; class smilie { function make_smile () { [tab][/tab] echo "$joke"; }}$funny = new smilie;$funny->make_smile();echo "$funny";?>But that gives an error "Notice: Undefined variable: joke in C:\Program Files\Abyss Web Server\htdocs\PHP\joke.php on line 11Object " I also tried to put the $joke in the class but that stays fairly the same. So there's still something missing LOL For the record the first piece of code, was my first try EVER at php!!! -
So I got fed up with HTML and wanted to move to dynamic pages... php was THE thing I wanted to learn LOL... SO I started going by a book. I got stuck with Object Initialization. I don't understand.... I really don't... To initialize an object, you use the new statement to instantiate the object to a variable. class foo { function do_foo () { echo "Doing foo."; }}$bar = new foo;$bar->do_foo(); What gets me is the given explanation, "you use the new statement" what new statement?? LOL I did fine with arrays, that's all cool. What I get from this piece of code is that you're defining a class called "foo" which consists out of a function "do_foo" which only outputs a string "doing foo.". But where in THAT lil piece of code are you creating a new object? The second part.. $bar = new foo; Isn't that wrong code? I mean no single or double quotes? And on last line I am fully lost.

Ok maybe I am strange then :PFirst thing I do is grab a piece of paper, and do a brainstorm... I write whatever pops into my head, it can be doodling, written, colour, anything. I overthink the idea I have to base a site on (this is the key for me personally), for example I want to make a site about my poetry, which is usually dark and deadish. So obviously I won't be using cheerful colours, we want the content theme and graphic theme to at least match :PI may not have a set idea for navigation yet, but it's my next step. I once again take paper at hand. I write down WHAT will be on the site. Building on the previous example of poetry, I would "theme" the poems together. Perhaps "death", "hurt", "tears",... those words will become submenu items So that's how I end up with a "site-outline". Since I am a fan of Flash driven menu's, I'll type the nav-outline in xml. Since I then already have a menu and a theme, time comes to take care of the graphics. I am one of those people who doesn't like sites with an abundance of graphics (unless of course the site is about graphics LOL) so I will stick to the basics. Now this is the odd part about this step, but for me it is essential. I choose my music. Yes, I work with music at ALL times (ok, so I am a little bit psychotic at times -no joke- thus music helps my focus by silencing voices). For a dark theme, I'll end up with gothic stuff, usually HIM, Voltaire, Cruxshadows, My Dying Bride, etc. Then I freestyle in PhotoShop If I decide against Flash (has happened LOL) I will most likely use PS and ImageReady for the navigation as well. Oh, yeah, for colourschemes, I look at pictures on the web. For example an ice/water landscape. I use my dropper to select the hex colours and then I also have my colourscheme. Right now, we have a colour scheme, navigation, banner and a rough idea of content. Then the coding, writing actual content begins. I tend to also made "filler" text and show the preview to some friends to see what they think of it. I end up adjusting some and in the end I got a pretty site Mind you, I am NOT a fast builder, my goal is to have a decent site, not a quickie.

First of all you apply for hosting, by using the form vujsa made, you just copy the output and post it. Then you will have to wait til NilsC or OpaQue approve your application. This may take a lil longer since OpaQue is quite busy at the moment and Nils took the weekend of Assuming you get approved, you will receive an email on the email address you supplied in your application (or profile - can't recall which one it is LOL). In that email you'll find a link and what you have to do. You will have to create your own account. OpaQue or NilsC just aprrove it and set the server so it lets you create an account In case of questions - > NilsC's post explain it pretty well I think this should explain it to you. Oh right, the credits LOL. For the starter plan you need 10 hosting credits (can be found on the index page under the shoutbox in green). This package is of course smaller than the normal one. You'll get about 20MB space The bigger one, plan two, requires 30 hosting credits, and you have 150MB space If you first get the starter plan, you'll need to go up to 30 hosting credits before you can upgrade to plan 2, however with 30 hosting credits you can ask for plan 2 as well Keep in mind when you create you hosting account, that your credits will drop to 3. So you'll have to post to get it up again. If you dive into negative hosting credits, your account will get suspended (meaning the site is still there, but you can't reach it anymore), it you go too far below zero, your account gets deleted.

I can't even count the number of threads here with free gmail give aways... Can we all please STOP doing this? It's kinda of very tiring to see yet another thread with gmail invites. You can talk about how it works, the spooler, whatever related to gmail, but please stop posting the "I have accounts to give away". It's been done soo often. I mean, I think most here have gmail or a just as large alternative. I am not closing the topic since the last post was nice, they asked how the spooler worked.

Well Phoenix, I hate to partially burst da bubble LOL. But moderators and admins can see that info about you However, normal members or hosted members can not. Of course this has a good reason, otherwise an admin wouldn't be able to suspend "badly" behaving hosted members. Yes, there is a sad side to every story huh?

I am not "Wicca", sorry jipman. As my name here reads... I am a witch, yes l337 you read that right And you are right, I am just a normal person like you, I don't have supernatural power Although it would be really handy at times LOL. There's no need to call any Wiccan a mindless treehugger, since some don't even hug trees See the thing is, religion, escpecially paganism is very personal. There's no written definition, yes, perhaps in a dictionary, but we each give our own description, definition, idea to it. First off, I do not levitate, I don't "freeze time", none of the TV stuff is actually a part of Wicca, WitchCraft. (For the record, you can be Wiccan, but that doesn't mean you're a witch, you can be both, but you don't have to. Wicca and WitchCraft is not the same ) Sometimes a spell can be as simple as a healing spell, which is nothing more than just anointing a blue candle with the right essential oil and chanting something. It's not like Charmed or Sabrina, even though at times I wish it was. It would sure as hell make it a whole lot easier to clean :PI don't just say I am a witch because it sounds cool, but because it FEELS (to me) it is ME, I can identify myself with it. I feel at peace, content and happier. :PWitchcraft is to me (like I said it's personal) a way of life. Not just a lil title. I love the sun, moon n stars, I love the smell of flowers, the rain falling on my face,... I love nature. And no that is not the reason I am a witch It's a part of it though. I can't really define it... It's beyond words to me, it's a part of me. As far as belief goes... I believe in a universal energy, which has a female and male aspect. The God and Goddess. Each has many names (hence the Polytheïstic nature of paganism), I believe that each name, represents a different aspect of the Goddess and God. Me personally, I am closer to the Goddess then to the God, mainly because I don't trust masculinity. (Sorry fellahs) But both are represented equally on my altar.I celebrate the Esbats and the Sabbats, just as most Wiccans do. Esbats being the Full Moons Sabbats are "witchy party dates" sorta LOL. For me, Samhain (Halloween) is New Years as well

Heh, I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling To no avail, I can't play asf (streaming radio) with WMP (It gives me a random - general error LOL - but then again it's M$) So I now only use WinAmp and for a few things RealPlayer. I don't need more stuff on my pc LOL the poor baby is already overloaded... *comforts her pc*

I can garantee you, the WP client doesn't take much system resources. I am running an ancient dinosaur of a computer and it still works fine and my system is not a grain slower than it already was ;)It's quite fun, and if you're like me, you have no idea of how much you actually type a day, WP gives you an idea and uhm I was about mine I joined the team, not for the hosting credits though LOL I have over 120 days, so I am happy And I can't stay away long enough to lose credits LOL (yes, Xisto is addictive )

I have one question though - how do you send multiple lines at once using telnet? In my case it's for a cyber war challenge... been sitting here for hours LOL GET *******/level19.php HTTP/1.1 Referer : http://blahblah.com/ User-agent : some name they invented The issue is, I can connect perfectly ok, the GET works, I get a success, but I need to be able to send the referer and User-agent in ONE line, since after the GET the connection closes. In case someone doubts my intentions - it is legal LOL. I am also wondering, I use FireFox and am a member of a few MSN groups, now when you post through the webpage in IE it gives you a nice looking WYSIWYG type of thing. Sadly in any browser othen than IE (blegh) it doesn't display and you are forced to use either plain text or pure hmtl... Maybe changing the User-agent in your browser someway may solve that???

Irc Question ops - voice
moonwitch1405241479 replied to moonwitch1405241479's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Thanks ... I got lost with all the abbreviations LOL I spent some time on IRC but never was more than owner of a test room I wanted to learn the IRC commands for channel admining - meh - I gave up I don't really care what type of op I am LOL I actually prefer the AOP over SOP since I can mess up WAY more as SOP -
I left earlier because I felt we were not really going anywhere with the meeting, I also became utterly confused about who had the "talking stick". Anyhow, that is water under the bridge. When I returned (just now), I noticed only ReBeCa is in there with szupie as ops. I did a nick identify, but didn't get ops. Which is fine by me... if that's a general decision. But it did lead to a question from my side. Can we get a list of WHO had ops, and which type of ops (sop or aop - and please what's the difference between them LOL). THat's all I have got to say for once it's not much - just want to know who has ops and all that.EDIT -> the not getting op was the HOSTMASK thing again - gah that uhm you know.
