  1. I suppose mysql is the most popular database because it's open source and hence many other open-source scripts and applications make use of it. Examples: this IPB forum, phpBB, phpList, and many php scripts.

    Rss In Firefox...

The RSS reader in Firefox is very basic. I hope that they will work on it in the next release of Firefox. I prefer to use http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/, a free online rss reader. It's much more advanced.
  3. This spirited discussion reminds me of Microsoft which is also a company that is often accused of abusing its position and large amount of money to 'bully' other small companies. Dont you think so?
  4. Well, you can't help it when Yahoo! is a multi-billion giant company. What hope does any small company has against such big companies? Yahoo! is abusing its position here, it seems.
  5. Google really is a company that has a culture of doing things the uncconventional way, isn't it? No wonder it can come up with new innovations and technology quickly. The guys at Google are really creative.
  6. There is actualy a tool that imports your online bookmarks into your browser bookmarks folder automatically. Foxylicious is a Mozilla Firefox extension that syncs your del.icio.us bookmarks into your browser bookmarks. You can find it at this site: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  7. I'm addicted to reading blogs on the Internet. I read both my friends' blogs as well as blogs by professionals like Gawker, Gizmodo, and many others. That alone use up a lot of my time.
  8. The golden standard regarded by the email marketing industry is that of a double-optin list, in which the user must "opt-in" twice before he/she gets on the mailing list. He/she has to provide an email and click on a link in the verification email sent to confirm his/her subscription. this virtually eliminates the risk of being labelled a spammer for the email marketer.
  9. Is this procedure safe? I'm afraid of screwing up my newly-installed Windows XP. Is it possible to just increase bandwidth on my Internet connection side and not my OS?
  10. This is my desktop PC's specifications:Windows XP Home Edition (SP2 included)AMD Athlon 64 1800 (1.2 Ghz)Pentium 3 processor512 MB RAMCD-ROM drive10GB hard disk driveIn fact, I just upgraded from an antique computer system: windows 95, 233Mhz, pentium 2. The change is speed is great.
  11. By the way, what OS do Xisto's servers use? I thought it is Apache servers, but I can't really be sure. It would be nice to know.
  12. It's my personal opinion, but I feel that such programs that check your email and notify you of new emails are not very helpful. They can be very distracting and disturbing especially if you receive large volumes of email per day. Of course, if you need to respond ASAP to your emails, such email checkers are great.
  13. I believe that Google's bots and algorithmns are better than Yahoo!'s, so I think that Google Adsense would be better at guessing the content of a page and serve relevant ads better than Yahoo! contextual advertising program.
  14. Yah, there are also other free search engines that you can get for your site, like: http://www.freefind.com/ The catch is that they put ads on the results page. Also, I think that if you want to design a serach engine that indexes the world's website, its very tough because your database would be so large that the costs of running it is very high.
  15. I prefer the buttons to be right at the top because that's the area where I go look for if I need information about the site or need navigational guidance. What's the most common positions on the web now?
  16. You must be so good at the game in order to be able to improve vastly the character in the game before you can make some money. For the rest of us who suck at online games, I guess we just have to see what else we can do to make money. The best and sure way to make money online is to build a legitimate online business and work on it. Slowly but surely the money will come.
  17. I heard that the makers of Firefox and other great products, the Mozilla Foundation, is discontinuting development of Firefox after version 1.0.1. Is that true? What implications do it have for us Firefox users?
  18. There is actually a career to be made out of hacking. There are hackers who trained to become network security specialists and their job is to try to hack into a network in order to make it more secured. I heard the pay's very high.
  19. that would be bad for software developers, because they would then have to make sure that their software is compatible with all the many OSes and browsers. Thia in turns leads to higher software prices for us!
  20. Paid search engine optimization is advantageous in that the pros and insiders who really know how to get your site into top postions will be helping you. This's great if you've no experience at all. Also it's great if you don't want to spend time on SE technology.
  21. Precisely! Plus, it's always easier to start topics or reply ro topics which you're very interested in and passionate about. For eg, if you love web design, you'll find it easy to talk about HTML, PHP, etc. And get the hosting credits.
  22. I don't think Google wants to collect our personal data so that they can sell to spammers or do malicious stuff or something. They just want to serve adverts to us to make money. Given the wonderful services they provide, I think it's only fair.
  23. If you're afraid of screwing up all your links to your images and files, it's better if you publish to your Xisto account with the built-in ftp or publish function in your Dreamweaver or Frontpage. Moreover, Frontpage's built-in upload function can keep track of all the files between your remote server and local computer and delete the files on your remote server if you deleted the files on your local computer. It really saves u time and space.
  24. ALternatively, you may want to try making the website available offline. I think there's such a function in Internet Explorer. You'll be able to surf through the pages as if you are online once you've made the website availabe offline. Of course it will be outdated content. Again, many files may have to be saved , occupying large space on your disk drive.
  25. I'm not very good at javascript. Actually, how does a javascript know that a page has been modified, automatically? In MS Frontpage there is an applet that does the same thing, but it changes the date only when an update or republishing of the web is done. How does it work in this case? Thanks
