  1. What about the connection??? Is there a need to uses the UP-LINK slot in the hub??Also what about the Configuring the IP-Address .. Is there a need to configure or can set to DCHP settings ..
  2. There are 2 types of RJ45 Cables :: Straight -Through > The arrangement is the same for both ends. This will be used for connecting to a hub, router, switch etc ... This by far the most common wire in the market. Cross-Over > http://www.ertyu.org/steven_nikkel/ethernetcables.html The arrangement is best illustrated in the above link. Such a arrnagement will be needed in your case. To get the cross over you can ask your regular PC Store .. but you MUST indicate that it is a crossover .. else you will get the straight through by default .. If you are adventurous enough, you may wanna try to do it yourself .. but I really don't suggest that .. too troublesome .. ALTERNATIVE :: 1) Removable devices :: CD-RW / Flash Drive / CDs .. etc 2) IR or Blue Tooth :: 3) Laplink .. (OMG .. if that still exist .. really slow ..) 4) Physically transfer the HDD 5) Upload to a G-Mail Account then download .. .. .. well there are numerous possibilities .. depending on your porficiency This type of connection
  3. I've read that this can be done with greater ease by using Ready Image, but since I'm more familiar with PS, I shall use PS as the guide. This guide does make a few assumptions :: 1) You already knew how to use Photoshop. 2) You already knew how to write HTML codes 3) You knew both of the above but did not ralise that it can be done .. Thus, I shall not touch on those 2 topics, as books a thousand pages thick have been written on them. So, I would wanna waste my time and yours and all the disksapce that could be used to host some useful stuff. 01:. Open the .PSD file which you have created the layout on. Somethings to take note of:: You may wanna toggle the "Snap" function in the "View" in the menu bar "Snap" will snap on to the nearest border. So if you are making very fine slices, you may wanna disable it. 02:. Create the slices I'll usual hide all the other tools when working and this can be done hitting the "TAB" button on your keyboard. I'll also like to start from outside the picture as it will snap automatically back to the border of the pic * Do note that HTML creates tables in row-by-row manner .. so try to keep your slices in rows .. this will make your editing of the code a lot easier in the future 03:. Edit the slices by doin a right-click * If there is no special formating or pict in the slice .. ie .. pure text or palin backgroud, it would be best to change it to non-image * HTML can be included in the text box 04:. Save as HTML Press "Ctrl" + "Alt" + "Shift" + "S" or goto File >> Save for Web You will then be able to edit the pict quality of each slice.. 05:. Do your own refinement of the Webpage with your preferred HTML-Editor
  4. I am a BUM .. (and proud of it) .. I just copy .. a mentor of mine once said that copying is the fastest way to learn a new trick .. 1) I'll download some templates of the web. and they usually comes in photoshop format .. http://www.boxedart.com/ is a good source ..2) I'll download free pix from places like microsoft.com which I feel that appropriate substitutes for the template ..3) Edit those pix .. making sure the colors and overall looks do blend together ..4) do some slice it up5) Use PS's "Save for Web" Function ..6) Viola .. it becomes a HTML page!!7) do some minor adjustment or the fonts/text etc..8) Test .. Test .. Test .. Test .. Test ..9) Upload ..A few of my Rules-of-Thumpa) adjust the size of the pix to the lowest possible w/o any visible lost of quality .. When ever possible .. try to eidt the codes manually .. the WYSIWYG editors always add a hell lot of redundant codes ..c) Include everything required and nothing more .. gone are the ol' days of blinking text and marquees .. *yikes* .. despite the popularity of broadband .. pls remember that there are still a large majority out there that are still on dial-ups .. .. .. .. .. hmm mm .. maybe I should do a tutorial on making a web-page on Photoshop .. (the tech aspect) ..
  5. You might wanna try to wait a lil longer before cliking .. sometimes if you have a lot of programmes running at startup .. it may take a while for all to load before your icons are workable ..
  6. Hi, I am trying to setup some website and was told that PLONE or MAMBO servers are useful tools to deploy. I had problem trying to figure oiut how to use them and as I can hardly find any "for dummies" tutorials .. I guess I 'll just have to rely once again on my faithful HWZ forum again.. hope someone can elighten me on :: 1) How and why are these S/W useful?? 2) When should I use them?? 3) HOW TO use them?? or some links to some tutorials THanks Edmund
  7. Getting Entrepreneurial (Adapted from Larry Farrell's book of the same title) With the mention of the topic, I guess many will conjure in their minds, pictures of geeky whiz-teens putting together another out-of-this world invention. Then they go out to some Venture Capitalist to get a million bucks to roll out their âInventionâ .. Well the truth is can't be further from that. According to some research done in the US, the followings are found :: 1)An average start-up is about 15,000 USD. Nike started with 100 bucks while DHL started without virtually $0 .. 2)The average age of entrepreneurs ranges from late 20s to mid-40s In fact, personally I feel that entrepreneurship is an atttitude rather than a career path. Just in case your are unfamiliar with Mr Larry Farrell, let me do his some justice by giving you a paragraph-short summary of his profile. Mr Larry Farrell :: Started to investigate the entrepreneurial habits of the founders of large corporations more than 20 years ago. The fact that about 1 third of the largest corporations fell within the 2 years when he start his business consultancy services aroused his interest in what had gone wrong. This made him dig deeper into the âGood-Practicesâ of MNCs. And he found that the âGood-practicesâ are found in the early startup days of these companies, as opposed to the common mistake of learning the practices of these corporations when they have become bureaucratic, complacent, lazy, etc .. to sum it up in one word .. SLOW! Of all the practices, he had summarised it into 4 Foundational Principles:: 1)Sense of Mission 2)Product / Customer Vision 3)High Speed Innovation 4)Self Inspired Behaviours These can simply be summed up by a quotation of Mr Walt Disney :: âThe inclination of my life has been to do things and make things which will give pleasure to people in new and amazing ways. By doing that I please and satisfy myself.â Sense of Mission :: There are 2 parts to it - What you believe How you gonna put it into action. It is important to note that what you do far outweighs the effect of what you profess. It is important not only to find something you love, but also something you are darn good at. Because the market ain't gonna pay for average. YOU don't pay for average. No ONE does!! Who ever says : âWhat is most average deal I can get out of this 100 bucks?â âWhere is the most average restaurant in town?â âWhere can I get the most average surgeon?â You may start of this part by listing out all the things you love doing and zoom into the ones that you are best at. Then with that brain-storm on opportunities based on those. Since these are things that you love and strong at, you wouldn't find too much trouble following through with. Product / Customer Vision :: Products and customers are to be viewed as one symbiotic system. Without the other, it will lose it's meaning of existence .. Why will you create products if there will not be any customers? Why solicit for customers when you haven't anything to offer? These 2 are in seperable! Do not fall into the âLab-in-the-Woodsâ theory. The fact of matter is to create your lab where there is the closest contact with the market. How else can these R&Ders to know what is most sought after in the market? High Speed Innovation :: This is the secret waepon of the an entrepreneur!!! Entrepreneurs are the ones who can react fastest the any changes and readjust their cause of action. Always create an environment that will allow everyone to contribute to the innovation process. For example, about 30% of revenue of 3M comes from their new products. And how they do it?? 1)They have designated a certain amount of the staff's working hours for day dreaming. 2)The fastest way up the corporate ladder is to invent something 3)They have a zillion other failed products created in the process 4)Some of their failed products turn out to be a revolutionary product - Eg :: POST-IT Pads Self Inspired Behaviours :: There are tons to write about on this segment, but I guess I'll just touch on one concept that I love a lot. It is called âIntrapreneurshipâ That is to get everyone in the organisation to feel like an entrepreneur. Get your marketing manager to feel and act like the Managing Director of XXX Marketing Inc. Get your operations manager to feel and act like the Managing Director of XXX Services Inc. Get your IT Manager to feel and act like the MD of XXX Technologies Inc. With that you can start to see the effects of total engagement within your organisation. More of how to create Self Inspired Behaviours can be found in the multitudes of books in your neighbourhood bookstore or online. If you are interested in getting this book, you may Click Here http://forums.xisto.com/ .. If you are interested to find out more about Mr Larry Farrell's services, please feel free to Email me at cryptomonadz@yahoo.com.sg or call me at (65) 9092 5085. My company is the official marketing agent for Mr Farrell in Singapore and the South East Asia Region.
  8. THis is something i m looking for .. .. is there any tutorial that will explain how to do that to a Linux-Idiot user??Linux is like Tamil to me!! I am clueless on the settings .. ..
  9. Thanks for your compliment .. Well a hell lot of places actually .. mostly be companies that are promoting their Mass Mailing Software .. also I've a good friend who used to work for a multi-national Email outsourcing company. We were trying to start up some e-marketing business but unfortunately did not quite worked out .. Learnt a lot during that period.. ..Some exploration also helped .. well .. in fact will be doing some project for my company's next marketing .. will use it as another experiment ..
  10. Before proceeding further, I have to state that this shall serve purely as a non-exhaustive guide. All information provided in this guide are a compilation of my research and personal experience with the subject. There is no guarantee, whether stated or implied, that will propel it your sales and marketing efforts to greater heights. As there are many aspects to look into, I guess I shall go easy first .. by touching on some fundamentals principles of good e-marketing practices A good e-mail marketing campaign should fulfill the following criteria:: Opt-in Based In fact the implementation of Email Marketing should be targeted towards a group of people who have given you the permission to send the information that they have specified. It must be noted that this permission is not be abused, ie sending irrelevant materials or selling their personal particulars to 3rd parties Add-value to recipient The information must add value to the recipient. For example, if you are doing a health-related e-newsletter, do not just send them advertisements of health products that you are distributing. You may do so subtly after providing some health tips, like how Vitamin C is beneficial for them, and then introduce them your products. BUT, never .. never .. make it an outright advertisement. Your members will soon be unsubscribing from your list. REMEMBER :: People love to buy .. they don't like to be sold!! This brings me to the next criterion Unsubscribe method 3 Reasons for this. 1)It will soon be illegal when the can-spam act is passed. One of the requirement is for an unsubscribe option. 2)It is waste of your resources to send materials to these people as they are probably going to ignore or block your mails 3)It PISSES them off, and this will in turn becomes negative publicity for you. Reasonable Frequency Too much too soon and you’ll frighten away even the most enthusiastic propect. Too little too late and they would have forgotten who on earth you are. Generally, 1-2 times a week should be taken as the max. In fact, to do 1-2 quality e-newsletters a week is already a rather taxing job. There are still some exceptions to this. For example, in my previous company, an online stocks trading company. We send out a daily email to our clients with the latest summary of the market updates. This is very well received. Personal Touch Please remember, not many people like reading a technical paper! Set your tone in a conversational manner. “Customise” your email as far as possible. There are countless such software out there that can do this .. and many are free ( with a little restricitons). It'll do something like a "Mail-Merge" function like that of a word processor. Therefore, each receipient will recieve a personalised greeting and maybe even a personlised attachment. So, unless the recipient's name is "Sir" or "Madam", and greeting like "Hi Pete" definitely sounds a lot more engaging then "Hi Sir or Madam" .. and I could bet my head that ain't anyone on this earth with :: Firstname :: Sir Middlename :: Or Lastname :: Madam Aesthetics A HTML-format email will definitely be more attractive and enjoyable to read. It will open up a window of opportunities for creativity and interactivity. But .. .. WARNING Not all email clients support HTML format. Even if it does, some settings may inhibit it's ability to display HTML. Thus, make sure that you choose a software that will support multi-part format. That is it will send out the email and, depending on the programme on recieving-end, disply the email in the right format. Note that this is tricky. Very tricky. I've tested on many software and sometimes the recipient will send reply me with an email full of gibberish .. and on the top of the mail it will say .. "Try reading this YOURSELF!!!" .. with this I'll end this lil article .. pls give your comments .. I can take critical remarks .. but try to be contructive when criticising .. there is really a lot more I wanna say but I am still in the midst of laying things straight. .. please feel free to ask me questions .. I think that will be easier for me to share my knowledge ..
  11. ;P .. IMHO .. always get ONLY what u need .. NOW .. the $$$ saved from something u will need only in 1 years time can be quite a bit ..1 yr later, the amt saved may be enough for you to get your desired item .. also u still have your old item that can still worth some $$$ when sold 2nd hand .. that is what is commonly practiced in Singapore ..
  12. I had a favorite way .. it's called cheating .. I am not sure if this still work .. did that many years back .. Online Casino!!They will usually match your initial deposit with an equal amount .. say $100 for $100 deposit ..The catch .. you've gotta wager 5 to 10 times the amount they give you.The trick .. to find a method of wagering so that wheter or not things are in your favour .. you will not lose much of the total wager .. this is really tricky .. ad I will divulge too much here .. To note .. 1) Choose a reputable site2) Check their terms and conditions3) Do your calculations to determine which game is most favorable4) Be mentally prepared that you may lose every single cent..5) Do it AT YOUR OWN RISK ..I've made a couple of hundreds that way ..
  13. That's a though one .. what is your defination of best??1) Price?2) Stability?3) Ease of use?4) Level of Tech Support?5) Security? For item 1, 2 & 5 there is no doubt that Linux will be the BestBUT ::Linux is by no means the most intuitive OS. If you've been a Windows user for a while, you may need quite a bit of getting used to.For items 3 & 4 Windows is answer. I think Win Server 2003 is their latest offering .. BUT :: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ .. Win cost a bomb!! Also, the other add ons are just as $$$$$$$$$$$$$ ... also most hackers / viruses etc are targeted at MS OSes ..
  14. Generally the adavantages will be greatly felt by novices and is afraid to do any changes to the settings. The default setting of SP2 will benefit these people the most. However, if you are an advanced use, and if you wanna set your OS the way you desire, then .. SP2 can be a hassle ..It is really irritating nowadays that it seemed that we are paying MS to use WinXP the way Bill wants us to use it .. vs the way we want to use it ..Anyway some of the pros and cons I personally find are ::PROs ::1) Fixes osme of the previous bugs2) More user friendly wireless connection3) MS will cease to support any Windows XP without at least SP1CONs :: 1) The pesky Security Centre that keeps popping up when ever I disable the Firewall. I will consider myself a savvy enough user to know what I am doing. So any form of reminder is considered redundant.2) Blocks out images of HTML emails in Outlook Express .. I've gotta go re-enable .. grrrhhh
  15. I've tried Ontrack's EasyRecovery 6.04 .. PRO::Partitioned in Linux .. realised did the wrong HDD .. Repartitioned back to NTFS .. Reinstalled WinXP .. Still manage to Recover Gigs of Data ::CON ::It's not free!! It's not cheap .. a single licence DIY version will cause abt USD 89 ..Guess I did too many things to my HDD .. many of the recovered files were corrupted, and their folder names were gone .. but when I 1st did it on a wrongly formatted HDD .. most things were fine
