If you manage to get a hosting account here at Xisto, you can easily install a message board like phpBB and Invision. You don't get ads (in fact u can even put in your own ads), you can customise and change the design, be your own admin, etc.

Very unfortunately, I don't have a credit card, else I'll register the free .info domain names already! I think there're a lot of people here who will face the same problem
-
Can you compare Javascript and Java? Although their names resemble each other, are they very similar languages to each other? I have the impression that both languages are very different from each other, so you cant really compare them fairly.

There are a lot of meta tags with many uses, but the main meta tags serve to display the keywords and description of the page. There's a discussion here about the use of meta tags to control spiders access to your pages, check it out.

Spiders are actually robots that crawl the web constantly by following links on a webpage to other pages. Because the web is made up of billions of web pages linked together, it is possible for the spiders to crawl the entire content of the web. That's how Google, with its spiders, can build a database for you to search. As for leaches, I'm not very sure, but it sounds very scary

If you're going to write the table structures of your mysql database yourself, phpmyadmin will be a big help to you. This tool can be found in the cpanel of your hosting account. Try the mysql homepage for more help.

Exactly, for the rest of us who cannot afford the hundreds of bucks for Photoshop, GIMP is a very good tool that more or less has the same functions as PS but is free.
-
I only has a PHP tell-a-friend function on my website, apart from that I don't use much PHP because I hardly know how to do the coding

I've read somewhere before that a vertical 120x600 skyscraper ad placed at the right hand side of your web pages generate more clicks, before adverts on google also appear on the right hand side of the search results, so internet users are "trained" to see ads on vertical skyscrapers on right hand side of the page

You're referring to a news reader or aggregator here. A news reader basically allow you to subscribe to a blog that offers you RSS (really simple syndication) syndiation of the site. When you subscribe, any new posts on the blog will be automatically delivered to your news reader. An excellent free online news reader is Bloglines. To create a blog, you can either use online services like Livejournal, Xanga, etc. Some of the more popular ones are Blogger and Movable Type. In the Addon Scripts section of cpanel, there are also some blogging tools like Wordpress, which is supported by Xisto.

Yea, that's right. Xisto's web hosting plan beats even after paid hosting plans with its host of features. The best is, you get all the features free just for contributing your knowledge here
-
If you don't want to write the script and upload it and everything, or don't know how to do that, I can recommend a few free tell-a-friend services that allows you to have that function by adding a few lines of HTML to your website. http://www.1-hit.com/all-in-one/php/tell-a-friend.php http://www.bravenet.com/webtools/discontinued.php http://www.cooltaf.com/

I've read that Obesity is on the rise in many parts of the world, especially developed countries like the US and European countries. What are you doing to prevent yourself from becoming obese? If you're obese, what do you intend to do? Share your views?I'll start first.I'm not sure why, but I just cna't seem to grow fat even after eating lots of things. The doc says I've high metabolism. So i guesss im fortunately in that sense!

How to Reduce Spams Let us help fight spams.
jcguy replied to iGuest's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Spammers have their own technology which is very much like Google's bot. They have built their own spiders which crawls the web just like Google, except that spammers' bots are designed to look for exposed email addresses, ie emails posted on message boards, and so on as described by jtakano. So if your email address exists on some webpages, it could get picked up. Such bots escpeially like to surf the databases of domain name registars because you need to provide a valid email address to order a domain. -
You're absolutely right. Unfortunately many web designers have forgotten this very basic rule and insist on using Flash animations, huge graphics, and other impressive technologies when designing sites. They seem to have forgotten the millions who still surf on a dial-up connection or who still use old computers.

That's quite true, I think it violates copyright regulations if you just take somebody's scripts, made some changes here and there, and pass it off as your own. It's better to learn slowly and develop the skills.
-
But Adobe Photoshop can ber very difficult for first-time users, and it takes quite long to learn for beginners. It has so many functions and uses that can be quite overwhelming in the beginning. But I guess once you got the hang of it, PS can be very useful. It's regarded as the best graphics design program by professionals.
-
Yeah that's what I meant. I believe if you use Cpanel's functions, it does increase your bandwidth usage, although I can't be sure. Can anyone clarify?thanks
-
You may find the other threads in this Database forum useful. There's one explaining a bit on the table-like structure of the mySQL and it's difference versus postgresql.
-
Some of these CMS scripts can be found in the Addon Scripts section of cpanel. You can then install directly from cpanel, and so no need to dowload the package from the official sites, upload and do the configuartion which can be quite tough for inexperienced users.

In fact I think this IPB forum board uses cookies too, although I can't be sure. Cookies can be very usful, but they are sometimes abused. And I wonder who came up with the name 'cookies'?
-
Why don't we have a banner design competition? Whoever designs the best-looking banner for Xisto, as voted by the members and admin, gets additional prizes, like extra bandwith, etc?
-
Cookies are rather controversial objects because of concerns of privacy. Cookies can be used to track your activities online, and some people hate this form of instrusion on their privacy. For example, site can show adverts to you based on the types of sites you visit using cookies. But then again, without the important role cookies play in serving ads, advertisers would not be spending, websites would have no money, and the web will be a less enjoyable place. Don't you think so?

I found this article that compages Postgresql and mySQL. Basically, the articles says that the two databases differ in terms of their features, support, ease-of-use, stability, speed, and licensing models. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Read it, it's interesting! BTW, can I copy the articles and paste it here or can I only link to that article?
