But don't you think the crawlers are smart enough to differentiate between XML a.k.a Feeds, and normal posts ? If it wasn't penalized, tell me why I can't simply copy paste stuff from all the blogs around the world to mine. My blog will be the most informative one on the planet!

Php Error: Warning: Cannot Modify Header Information
magnafrost replied to tinoymalayil's topic in Programming
Why dont you just try removing the Head part from your code? It should work in that case. -
Anwii.. How exactly does RSS feeds come into the picture? We're talking about stuff that google search crawler sees. And feeds are meant to be seen by people and not search engines. But yes, I agree with you that search engines probably don't penalise. What I think is likely is that if you have the same content, the value for it is split. This could be a problem if your content is copied by someone else, but it won't affect you negatively.

How To Setup Up Dlink G Router With Mtnl Router
magnafrost replied to karanv's topic in Hardware Workshop
Hey, from what you are saying it sounds you are having trouble figuring out what to do and not exactly running into problems. I've used a D-Link router before and turned out it is very smart. I suggest the following steps. I'm making it as basic as possible and apologies if it is too trivial. 1) Contact MTNL and make sure your connection type is "Always on", and that you don't have to run a dialer to login to the internet. 2) Locate the ethernet cable that comes out from the modem and plug it into the 'WAN' port in the router. This is usually on one of the extremes, and stands separately from the rest of the 'LAN' ports. 3) Now, get an extra LAN cable and plug one end of it into the router, and the other into the ethernet port in your system. Thats it! Now, everything should be up and running automatically. But here are a few problems you might run into. Faulty IP address: In this case, you will have to manually set the IP address. This happens if there's a conflict of the Local IP addresses that your modem and router want to use. To sort this out, connect the modem directly to the system and figure out what addresses the modem wants to use. For eg, it could be 192.168.1.1 , while your router prefers a 10.0.1.1 address, though this doesn't usually happen. Now, go to Network connections in your computer and set the IP addresses manually. Let the modem remain at the original IP address and configure your system to use an address that is different from the modem in only the last digit. To clarify, if the modem uses 192.168.1.1, set the system to use 192.168.1.2. Internet Not accessible: In this case, try shuffling around the connections. Also, make sure that the IP address settings are done correctly. Some ISPs provide IP address manually while others do it automatically. Contact the customer care of your ISP and ensure your settings are correct. Hopefully, by now you have configured it correctly. But, I doubt you will be using it for one system. Connect more systems to the network and make sure internet is accessible by all systems simultaneously. If you are using WIFI, make sure you encrypt the connection and preferably hide the network and use MAC addresses to limit the systems that can connect to it. If you still have any issues or need help with the WIFI settings, post here and we'll be glad to help -
I'm no doctor, but I've a strong feeling your body is not going to like it. Sure, you are not going to die because of it but your organs are going to have to work extra hard to get it out. And in case they don't do a perfect job, which is likely as they are not expecting loads of chalk to be eaten, you're going to have to deal with things like kidney stones. I'd suggest you stick to the normal diet instead of experimenting

Wow.. I was gonna edit my previous post to say that I am a 'he'. But looks like my post made it obvious anyway! And no no .. we'll definitely blame you coffee shop people who are supposed to warn us And oh yes .. lets not forget to look up the list of coffee shops before we leave and decide on the best one

I would say they are being pretty stupid there! Increasing the level cap to 999 is only going to piss people off and have them stop around 100. Look at WOW. If they had started it talking about level 85 or 850 or whatever, they would've hardly got any players. The trick is to keep them wanting more! Have them slog it out to 60. Then tell them its 70. Mad rush starts, all to start all over again for 80, and now 85. If FV could just keep up the level raises to 20 or 30, they'd have so many more players at top level struggling to stay there.

LoL wd.. You're just going to be absent from the list of active users.. Not really sure how that helps you! And ya , I've also had problems with the mod approval posts. The funny thing is I don't think it is thread specific. I have had that on a thread to which I had already replied, where I don't think it asked for approval. Strange!

Hehe , yes. And I've actually started admiring both anwii and wd, (and partially hate ). Being able to have that firm belief that you are right, and fighting for it! Good going guys! But this topic will not reach a consensus unless we can all sit together in the same room and talk, which I guess is next to impossible. If someone can figure out a way to get close to that, we should try it sometime

It looks to me like you matter a LOT to her. One thing I've noticed both from me and other people is that we have the biggest fights with the people who we like the most. We just so blindly like them that we end up hating them! Its happened to me time and again and I'm frankly a little unsure about myself actually! But the point is, you yourself said that a friend is supposed to be understanding. She's the one in the bad place and you are the one in the good place. You only have your broken friendship to handle while she has to handle that and a lot more, whatever they are. So go ahead, be a good friend, talk to her, befriend her, shout at her, hit her, hug her, whatever it takes to get your friendship back on track. But be warned, never go groveling back for friendship or act like one of you is superior to the other. You aren't. You are equal and that's what made you good friends, so embrace it, and don't miss a good friend. Just my 2 cents.

Sotw #12 - Voting Vote for your favourite
magnafrost replied to Tramposch's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
@rvalkassI love yours the best. But I find that the fire is... umm .. too 'fire'y Pour some water over it (metaphorically) and yours will score double points -
I dont like it that much. It kind of seems dull to me. This would suit some signatures, but not this one. For Iron Man, it has to be bright, sharp and clear! Try getting in more contrast and making the picture overall better. Or maybe, it is already good and I just have a bad monitor! In any case, you should make it awesome even for us folks with a low contrast monitor

Mycent Update Calculations [resolved]
magnafrost replied to rpgsearcherz's topic in General Discussion
That makes perfect sense. I love it that the new system is very smart! Not that I was part of the old system but still 'new' sounds good . So lets try to see what all factors we know contribute. I'm listing out what I know. In case I am wrong, please correct me. 1) Number of words in the post (All other factors being equal, it will still contribute) 2) Whether its a reply to a topic or a new thread (New topic = more value) 3) Number of views 4) Word formation (I'm not sure about this , I'm assuming it based on something I've read here) 5) Time taken to reply (From previous post I assume) 6) Value of links in the post (Maybe wikipedia, how do we ensure people don't spam this ? ) Am i missing something ? Are any of these totally off the mark ? -
Mycent Update Calculations [resolved]
magnafrost replied to rpgsearcherz's topic in General Discussion
The whole basis of the other thread is some kind of proportionality between the number of lines and myCents. If that's not true, I guess we are back to square one and need to wait for Opaque's comments to have any clue whatsoever. -
The funny thing is if each couple decided to have just a kid or 2, the world population would start plummeting down. Both because of the direct math involved ( No. of people get halved each generation I guess) and because of diseases and so on. Even if it was 2 per couple, the population would still start going down gradually. But its surprising that there are so many people on the planet who seem intent on depleting all the resources! If only we could enlighten them, the world will be a much better place for us and for everyone else!
-
First of all, sorry for posting in this thread guys, but I couldn't resist.. I'm sure you'll know exactly how that feels Anyway, onto the math .. Anwii .. this is where our opinions are differing. You are fully correct in what you are saying and so are we. The only difference is, wd's calculation is a little more generic. Now, you had mentioned somewhere that wd has already set a trend for herself and in the next 500 posts she would stay at 10 cents per post again. Maybe true, maybe not. But the point is, using the average of 10 cents is possibly true only for her. There would be a different average for me, different for you , and so on. But in wd's calculation, you have an approximate value that ANYONE can use. Take your posts for instance. If it turns out that you have 10 Group A posts and 20 Group B posts, you could come up with an approximate value that will work for you also. That is the difference. Also, in your case you are making an assumption about the curve, that wd does not make. Do you agree that this makes sense anwii ?
-
@Anwii.You learn and then taught math? No offense but I would stay out of those institutes. First of all, you are NOT seeing the logic here. 1/1 = 1; 2/2 = 1; 3/3 =1; and so on! When you are talking about ratios and percentages, the numbers cancel out. Which is why it does not make any difference is the number wd is choosing is 0.5,1,2,4 or 100,200,400,800. They cancel out. The only mistake we made was in assuming that you would know this. We had already pointed out enough times that it was about the ratio and not the numbers. If you are unable to understand that, I suggest you take(as in attend) a course in algebra, and try using the numbers 1x,2x,4x,8x. They'd cancel out and you would get the same result. If you are going to not understand why this x also comes into the picture, it is the end of discussion. Go to some math site, I havent had to because I dont have a problem with numbers. Your problem is, you call it kiddie math and you are applying the same amount of logic that a 4 year old kid would be able to. Grow up and see that you are wrong and accept it. I am sorry for being a little harsh but it is very obvious that you are being adamant on not accepting that you are wrong. Ask experts, learn that and you don't even have to accept that here. Lets call this the end of the discussion.@wdGive it up. I do not see how we can explain it any better. Someone who he accepts is better than math than him needs to talk to him, and not us.

Mycents Are Not Updating Please help me...
magnafrost replied to fermin25's topic in Web Hosting Support
Not sending emails for the updates actually makes sense right ? The only reason opaque sent that mail was basically saying "Phew guys .. Stop cribbing! The update is done!" and not exactly because it is mandatory to send an update. I mean, if the updates matter that much to you, login and see. If not, I am sure you have one less mail in your inbox. I hope it stays this way. -
I shall answer on behalf of wd, if you dont mind. You were asking how she got the ratio and saying any number she fancies can be used. YOU used the same ratio my dear friend. You said 3.5 posts average and so on. 3.5 : 7.5 : 15 : 30 is the same ratio that she is talking about. The only small difference is 3.5 should be 3.75 to make it exact, which is not a very big error I would say. If you think its a very big error, you are welcome to calculate using the number 35:75:150:300, and figure out finally that the margin of error was so small that the whole process was not worth it in the first place. And while you are saying wd is making assumptions, i see it like you are leaving out too much information. You keep talking about how much lines are important and she's leaving it out , while she is not leaving it out. Just because she doesn't make it explicit the way you did does not mean she is wrong. She's just taking a simpler approach. And if you did the whole exercise just to figure out that all posts are equal, you need not have done that in the first place. Try to give an approximate myCent value for each post using your math. Use it for your own data maybe. You'll then realise the shortcoming in your formula that wd is trying to solve. And again, purely supporting wd in this one, she is arguing but not in a childish/kiddish way. Maybe you are right, maybe you are wrong, but at the end of the day , I would say this was a decent conversation and not two kids poking at each other without any clue whatsoever. And I intend to stay till the end of this thread till there is some conclusion.
-
Heyy thats not fair! I am supporting wd full time! You are saying everyone else says that he is right! No offense anwii @wdanwii gets the 3.5 and 7.5 by using (2+5)/2 and (5+10)/2, that is the average of the number of lines in each of your groups. @Anwii If we are just talking about average myCents per post, your post makes perfect sense. However, you are assuming a distribution that matches wd's for everyone. For instance, if you take all my posts into account the distribution may not be the same. The same holds true for yours because I've noticed your average post length is a little higher than mine. The point I am trying to make is, if wd sticks to her distribution forever, she can blindly use your 10 myCents per post formula. However, it might be 0.2 for you, and maybe 0.8 for someone who makes only huge tutorials. The intent of wd's post is to figure out an approximate number of myCents for any of your posts. True, there will be a lot of error because of the assumption that a 2 line post and 5 line post are equally valuable. But, it'll be far too complex to get the mapping for each length. As in , there are two 2 line posts, four 3 line posts... to the maximum. To clarify, assume I make 5 2 line posts tomorrow. Should I expect 50 cents? No, that doesn't sound right. Neither does making 5 tutorials and getting the same 50 myCents. In wd's case, it makes more sense as you can get a figure much closer to the actual value. You get this by using 0.072*(0.5) = 0.036 for group A, 0.072 for group B, 0.144 for Group C, and 0.288 for Group D. That makes perfect sense to me. You could also simply divide the total amount by the total lines and get average myCent for each line, and use it. Hope I made myself and also wd clear!

Hey my myCents just got updated a while back. Take a look at yours. If it still has not updated, you have to file a ticket or PM Opaque. -
Road Runners Maybe I should change my nickname to Willey Coyote?
magnafrost replied to sheepdog's topic in Home & Garden
Wow. Thats a very interesting read. You should consider taking up literature if you already havent Kinda kept me glued full time. Did you take pics of it by any chance ? Will look nice I am sure! And one doubt in your story Was it always the male who came to get the mice from you ? If the female never came, its an interesting observation I would say. I've heard that in the case of lions, the male is lazy and sleeps around in the cave, while the female manages to get the food. The male only ever walks out if his help is actually needed, say, for taking down a large elephant( or maybe if a tiger was giving menacing looks at the lion cubs ? ) . This means its not always a given that males are lazy. Darn .. I thought I could always use this as an excuse for being lazy Oh yes.. almost forgot .. coming to the actual question that you asked! I've had that experience though I'm not sure if I have anything worth mentioning. Something like getting an awesome (read lucky) headshot on CS or making one smart movie in Dota which got my team kills while we are safe. I can actually quote instances for those though I'm sure this is not the thread for that. You could also including making PJs. My specialty is clubbing my mother tongue and English in a way that provides a double meaning for the statement I'm making, and the exasperated look that the audience provide you in return is just priceless !!! -
No anwii .. wd is right in her calculations .. I'll try and explain. The total number of posts is 400. Now what she is trying to do is have a weightage for each group. She's not taking into account the exact number of lines but the group as such, which is an assumption that I am not sure about. If we assume that this part is correct, she has split all the posts into 4 groups, A to D each of which has a certain number of posts. Group A -- 70 Group B -- 200 Group C -- 100 Group D -- 30 Total = 400 = Total number of posts. Now, she's giving each group a weightage in the ratio 1:2:4:8 Putting it as 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 Number of 'weighted' posts = 70*0.5 + 200 *1 + 100*2 + 30*4 = 555 Earnings per 'weighted' post = (Total Earnings) / (Number of weighted posts) = 40/555 = 0.072 Look here for more information about what exactly weighted mean is, which is what wd is doing. Now, each post in group A is worth 0.072*0.5 myCents, which means the total number of myCents that group A generates is 0.072*0.5*70 and so on. I'm not sure if I did a good job at explaining it, but I am pretty sure WD did not make any mistakes. Are you convinced now anwii or still got doubts ?
