  1. I am absolutely certain that life exists elsewhere in the universe. But, to give it a slightly different view, I dont know if they'll be on planets. They might be on satelites. They might be in raw space. We never know. We are making too many assumptions by comparing other life forms to us. We assume they'll be on some extreme. Either that they'll look exactly the way we do, or that they are little green monsters and the like. My perspective is that we have absolutely no perspective. Like someone mentioned, the universe is so huge that we can be absolutely certain about life existing elsewhere. Put in also the dimension of time, and you get a much bigger number. Basically a probability of 1/ (Infinity(space) * Infinity(time)). For the question of whether we'll ever make contact with alien life forms, I think the answer is no. This is because I do not expect any life forms in a distance that we are capable of perceiving in the near future, and we will be extinct by the time we get that technologically advanced. I believe any life form that evolves will get extinct at some point or other, probably by killing themselves or because of natural events and not have an infinite technological advancement. The only way in which life forms from two different planets have met is if they happen to be very close in space, say like mars for us. While I agree that is not an impossibility, this will reduce the number of alien species contacts in the universe by a very huge number making it a single or double digit number in my opinion. But I do agree that there is a very slight chance that alien contact has already been made in earth and a handful of people know about it. Lets see. In case we ever get lucky enough to meet them, say a "Hi"
  2. Ok take a look at this! Definitely an issue with times. I can see that there is a lag in times. I get the feeling that the system is being used instead of server time as my post shows the exact same time. Opaque, see if you can fix this.
  3. Did we just get the issue in this very thread? I could actually see opaque's reply before I clicked on "Add reply" but I go there and see that my post is there before his. RPG has a post even after that ! And I can see the timing for mine behind RPG's by about 10 minutes !
  4. Yes, I have observed this issue before though I dont think I've actually faced it. They've really been funny because in one of the posts I saw, a post had quoted a post 'after' it! For all I know it might've been yours. Now that mycents are fixed, I think opaque can start looking at these issues. The only problem I've faced now is that I posted a reply on the global warming topic, but my reply did not come up. I tried again 3 or 4 times and then I suddenly saw a "this post needs approval from a moderator before posting". I'm not exactly sure when that came up (though I'm hoping I dont get banned for spamming when I wasn't even trying to!). Sorry to the mods if it was my fault, and if it wasnt, please take a look into it opaque!
  5. First of all, if you lend out your pen drive, you are obviously giving it out with full access. After password protect your pen drive, what is the point of lending it out if they're not going to be able to use it ? I suggest you backup or delete all your data from the pen drive before giving it out , and if you feel you'll need the data on the pen drive when you get it back, zip it or rar it with a password and give it. Also, it makes sense to actually tell the people you lend it out to to not delete your data and in my experience they do respect it. In fact, I have loaned out my ipod to my friends bf whom I dont even know, but he used it and when he gave it back, it had the exact same data as when I had given it out.
  6. Yes you are right I just registered there and couldn't really find a single topic that I was enthusiastic about. Gave it a shot by replying to two threads though. Will try it out a little longer before giving up I guess
  7. I'm a little confused here. By technical do you mean the kind of "web master" technical or "techie" technical. As in, "My website is not up .. DNS issue" vs "I've got this Java app running but not sure how to deploy it" ?
  8. It might be a driver issue. Try looking up for drivers compatible with Windows 7 online. Try the windows XP emulator thats built in witn Win7 and see if the printer works fine from there. If it works fine there contact HP and try to get new drivers. If it does not, you have some other problem which you need to fix.
  9. Lets do some math here. Putting 20% income for you from all people under you, you'd still need about 5 million people under you. Piece of cake
  10. You can also try out Garena. Its an online community of gamers which I'm pretty supports this though I hardly play the game. You can also use hamachi to setup a virtual LAN so that you can play with anyone. The only problem with hamachi is that there are no universally used virtual networks for each game that make the communities much smaller. Its perfect though if you want to play with your own friends. Go gaming. I use Garena a lot for dota so in case you need some help setting it up let me know.
  11. Someone told me that gmail was made in AJAX. And if i, right AJAX can be very powerful if used for mostly-text sites, email for instance. I kinda see it as the text counterpart of flex, though I'm not really sure about all this as I dont even remember the source. Maybe it was all a dream !
  12. Noooo !! I want the Quick reply back ! I dont care if its bugged for now . I'd rather do a Ctrl-A , Ctrl-C before clicking post than to click on Add Reply and wait for the page to load. If people like anwii prefer the second way fine! Lets try to fix the issue and not remove the feature !
  13. Agreed. Unfortunately for all of us Android came to market very late. But now I'm seeing Android coming up pretty quickly. Evernote for instance already has an android version though it also has versions for every all of iphone/touch/pad ! Plus, if I were to decide to go for developing a mobile app, I would go with Android. Partially because I have heard about a lot of Iphone apps getting blocked for petty reasons and I don't want my effort wasted. If more and more people are preferring Android maybe one day it'll catch up ! Though its a pity we can't use something like VMware for our phones!
  14. 194?! Isn't that way too small! I guess the good thing is its pretty easy to solve by adding some more memory.
  15. Check out Grid Focus . Its one of the best themes I've come across so far.
  16. Afaik the apps for the two are completely NOT cross compatible. From what I've heard you cant even put an app that you developed on your own phone. It has to be downloaded from the app store. Though, I think this is different if you sign up for a apple developer account for which you have to pay an amount. The HTC on the other hand is open as far as i know and you would not have a problem in loading an application on it. Though, the iphone probably has a lot more apps than HTC. Personally, I would never buy an iphone as I dont like the restrictions they put on it. Android all the way ! BTW I have never owned an iphone before or accessed the app store. Neither have I owned an HTC. All these are based on what I've heard from other people so don't take me to court with it
  17. Dont ask me why but Dan Brown's "Digital Fortress" comes to my mind. But this is so sad ! I doubt anything will happen though .. They've said that the data has to be provided in 15 days or the service will be banned. I guess they're being drastic because of some terror threat or something but banning gmail is not really going to help! Anyone who wants to exchange data that the security agents will be interested in can easily use some other offering for that ! The only people harmed are google and normal folks with no gain for anyone !
  18. Maybe you should consider embedding it to play on youtube and have a link saying "Check out HTML5" or something on the side. More for you experimenting than for visitors though
  19. Umm guys .. Lets not blame Opaque. I'm sure he's not sitting jobless or partying right now. Being a software guy i know one thing. Its not always easy to say exactly when something will get done. So lets not pressurize him. Better to take a little longer and get a issue-free one than one where he hurried up and things arent perfect. The only thing that could've been done was getting all the coding done before the migration but now that its been done lets be patient. I know I'm new here but just my 2 cents (not myCENTS )
  20. There are actually 2 better ways of doing it. One is using the latest version of realplayer. You install it with all the plug-ins you'll get a "Download this video to real player" or something like that . Use it and download it. Easy as hell. But if you want to conserve band-width and want to use it up use this software called VideoCacheView. Its freeware and easily available. Just google for it. I'll put up a link if someone has troubles with it though. This just goes through the cache and lists all the files that are actually .. umm .. non-useless. So fire up firefox, or preferably chrome. Because firefox keeps 2 caches while chrome maintains just one. Watch video. Have VideoCacheView open. Whichever file just got added is yours. And from here you can do direct copy paste.
  21. Lol i dont consider web developer as the back end. That'll be like calling the heart of our body as the back-end. I would probably put the hosting service provider as the back-end. Just my opinion.
  22. Like lots of ppl mentioned above it highly depends on ur type of internet and ur ISP. For instance, in dial-up, you have to squeeze out all the available bandwidth as it wont come to you easily. Use a program like FlashGet, it is free and its awesome. Someone mentioned using DAP. I used to use it but when stopped when someone told me it had some malware or something. Not really a trusted source but then why should i risk it when I dont really have to ? If you are using broadband with a limited speed, as is the case in mine, you'll mostly get the same speed consistently and dont have to mess with accelerators. But if ur ISP wants to meddle with you , you dont have any choice but to do everything mentioned above !
  23. Wow good find .. But im wondering if it'll work on my Symbian phone. True it has a pdf reader but the darn thing never seems to let me read any document big enough to be worth carrying. Im planning to go for a kindle for the e-ink but i need something till then ! :|
  24. Yes true .. The main difference between humans and computers lies in being able to relate. For instance, if you teach a kid that a dog is an animal, he'll be able to extend/ extrapolate it and say that a cat is also an animal. But computers cant do that. they are "precise" . The match needs to be exact. For instance, if they were to compare bears with humans and dogs, they'll probably say humans are closer to bears than dogs are. Thats why ppl are trying to make it more fuzzy these days. If the fuzziness that computers can interpret were to multiply many million times over, they might one day be reach our level of intelligence. But they'll never catch us up because we are evolving too!
