  1. ipad is a fancy toy from apple which lacks some useful features like support for flash. also the restrictions placed on it do not make it very attractive option to buy. if i had the money to buy the ipad, i would seriously consider buying another tablet which has more features than it. of course it is your choice whether to buy it or not, and all apple products are special in their own way the ipad however seems to be a bad experiment which was released before it was completed.
  2. hey guys I was reading about Xubuntu on wikipedia when i found this: is it true then? you were saying xubuntu consumes less system resources than ubuntu but wikipedia has something else to say. there was something else on the site, about Lubuntu, which is meant to be used for light computing. it is supposed to be using half the RAM as compared to ubuntu and xubuntu. now if that is true then switching to that would be a better option as the RAM requirements would be lesser than ubuntu 10.04. i ordered a free cd when version 9.04 was out and on it it was printed that the minimum requirement is still 256mb. and i know for a fact that the simpleton has a 512mb pc running 9.10 quite smoothly so i think the minimum requirement got changed from 10.04 itself, as it is a long term release and so they might have made quite a few changes.
  3. uncyclopedia gets boring after a while, although it's good for a few quick laughs. i don't think it even deserves to be compared with wikipedia. conservepedia scares off non-US people people with its logo! as for the articles in there from what i've seen it's nothing compared to what wikipedia has to offer. so let us stick to talking about wikipedia for now. it's got millions of articles ranging from highly useful to totally meaningless and if you compare it with those other two sites you mentioned, it deserves a few more points for not losing its roots in order to face the competition and since a lot of people use wikipedia, its easy to catch people who use wikipedia articles in their research directly without mentioning the source. so lets not doubt the credibility of wikipedia and enjoy it while it lasts!
  4. lol this reminds me of an old episode of South Park, where a mighty player in Warcraft turns out to be a total loser, wasting all his time in front of the computer. i'm not saying all players are like that, but what Quatrux said is true - if we don't stop playing games like warcraft soon we're going to end up ruining our life in unimaginable ways. gaming is a passion for lot of people and when you get to share it with millions of others on the internet that sure makes an exciting combination. it's just not a healthy idea in the long term. maybe people who have loads of time to kill can truly enjoy warcraft by playing it all day long, but they'd most probably get bored after a few days/week and start finding something else to do.however for now blizzard's fan base is very tight and they won't be losing anything at all
  5. wikipedia has made life much easier for a lot of people who wanted to know about few things in a much faster manner. before wikipedia came on the scene the internet was used for research but the few good sources that people had were not so good, and the sites that had goo information were largely unknown to people. besides that, based on the type of research, people had to look for different kinds of sites. wikipedia came and solved all these problems. now the best possible information (in most cases) is brought together and put in a single site so that everyone can find it much easier. and no matter what the topic of research might be, people can look for the common site which is wikipedia. the question of whether it is reliable has been asked from when the site was started. i would say its definitely reliable, but again i would add the tag, in most cases. i won't use wikipedia for sensitive topics like religion, politics, etc because here there is a higher chance of wrong information being fed. for safer topics like mathematics, science, technology, etc it is a good source. and i use wikipedia as an entertainment portal too. it has all the movie reviews, tv episode summaries (in most cases each episode has its own page with ratings) and dvd release dates, etc which is very good info for someone seeking to kill time. so i would just say wikipedia is a great place to be and for most of the topics we can be sure that the information being provided is definitely reliable. for sensitive topics, you have to keep your eyes open for what you're reading.
  6. congratulations anwiii wow i never noticed there are three 'i's until i saw deadman7's large post!! it's really a good decision to make anwiii as a mod i dont think no one else is as active as him in the forums. the other mods are active and helpful too but i think in terms of being active no one can beat anwiii. and in terms of being helpful i think all the mods are equally good; anwiii's way of helping may just seem strange to some people
  7. i just play tekken 3 or prince of persia whenever im depressed. the violence in these games helps me to relieve myself and i try to put everything into the game so that i return to normal soon. and this actually works. once i was too depressed to do anything -then i forced myself to start playing prince of persia in hard mode from the beginning. within 30 minutes i forgot all about my worries and concentrated only on killing the enemies. slowly all my depression left and i began to feel much better. since then i've never uninstalled these games from my system even though i've played them at least a dozen times each. they really work!
  8. you're right - praising piracy for any reason is not a wise thing to do. and yes, it might not be the biggest factor to bring down the prices. but it does seem to be an important factor. the photoshop example is very good to prove that my point may be wrong. i think the full suite costs Rs.1,40,000 over here. with that much money one could very well buy a powerful bike or a small-size car! thats why its becoming more pirated. but even then not much has changed in the pricing department. but that's just because even if a few people buy some copies of the suite, it will easily cover up the losses by piracy. honestly, does a piece of software need to demand that much, even if its the best piece of software out there?!! with reasonable pricing Adobe could have achieved more profits. but it doesn't seem to be heading down that road any soon now. as for the case of movies and music, they've been trying hard to put restrictions on legit users, whilst pirates run away with full freedom over the pirated goods. i think a game by the company Ubisoft has a very rude restriction in place - it asks the users to be connected to the internet as long as they are playing the game, so that the game can contact the company server every few minutes to prove its legit. a report came about this saying that initially a lot of players were unable to play the game because the servers were busy. on the other hand, the pirates released a patch which disabled this check and they enjoyed playing the game. so the legit users were the ones to suffer. in cases like this, piracy looks very appealing and more people get attracted to it, thinking that the companies wont lose big money anyway.
  9. no matter how many texts people keep sending each other, they're enjoying it so why not let it be for now. some people know how to control themselves and they stop at around 100 per day. others just keep on texting whenever they find time and these are the ones who have to be careful in the future. talking about the future, how many adults find time to send over 100-500 messages in a day? since teenagers have lots of time on hand they have the capacity to send out so many messages in such a short time. once they grow up and get jobs and all, they won't find so much time so even if they still have the addiction of texting, they will gradually cut down automatically because they have to fit it in their busy schedule. the only downside for the teens now is that they will miss out on a lot of other useful things. but in the end all they care about is whether or not they are happy. that's all!!
  10. You make a good (although old) point that greed is the factor which drives up the prices all along. And I've never actually downloaded any albums off the internet (because the regional music hasn't become that advanced over here!) but I can see how you're right. No matter how a consumer wants to purchase something legally, he/she ends up paying too much for too little. This happens in the case of buying it in shops or off the internet That's the reason I suggested we need a shock to change things soon.
  11. we know how much loss piracy is causing to the entertainment/software industry these days. in the days before the internet, there was hardly any piracy, and even the little that was there didn't cause much damage. that was why the prices went up rapidly and that hasn't changed much even today. today the most damaging form of piracy may be the sale of dvds, but the work that goes into the creation of these dvds is still done through the internet. if im not wrong, the "scene" doesn't sell dvds but just circulates them online, right? but the other "scene" which prepares and sells the dvds still uses the internet for getting everything ready. so the main culprit is the internet, without which piracy couldn't have gotten stronger. but on the other hand, thanks to piracy, at least a few people are now having the sense to reduce the prices and make the products more closer to the general law-abiding public. had it not been for piracy, the high prices would have continued and people would have probably found some other form of entertainment (and in case of software - open source). of course there is still scope of much change and much reduction of prices, but atleast its a start. my theory is that piracy should die out soon, but before dying it should give such a shock to everyone that the reduction of prices should become much more speedier. im not sure how this shock should be, but it'll be good if there was a nice shock to remind the industry giants that unless they price the products sensibly, they'll continue to face the wrath of piracy always and it'll just keep on getting worse unless they act soon. so does anyone have an idea of such a shock? don't you think it would be sort of good if such a thing happened? after all, piracy has started the reduction of prices so maybe it can do that a bit more faster with this shock, in whatever form it comes
  12. yup, it's a fact that we need to feel all the emotions at least once so that we can learn to control them at more crucial stages of our life. and jealousy is the emotion that each and every person feels automatically at some stage or the other, but mostly during childhood. at that time out of all innocence we get jealous of a lot of things. if we learn to control it at that young age itself then it will be easy to deal with it in later stages.
  13. Well this is bound to happen - most of the members who are students are busy at this time of the year, and for those who aren't students, well - this is the beginning of summer, right? So what would people prefer - spending time outside or typing away at their computer? OK that's a lame theory, and there are people from cold places as well, but it' just a coincidence that people all over the world tend to become busier during this time of the year, no matter what their occupation is. and by the time june comes im thinking there will be a spike in the activity because by that time summer will definitely be in but that also means holidays!!
  14. that was a thoughtful reply anwiii. your talk about history made me think about the future, especially the one shown in Wall-E. The humans in that movie were habituated to sitting all day and all their communication took place with the help of machines, even though they were just a few meters away from each other! Maybe the next step of laziness is precisely that! maybe that makes a good point - when someone i don't know too well calls me i do sometimes get the urge not to pick up. but that doesn't happen when the same person(s) with whom i share 50-100msgs a day calls unexpectedly. so maybe that theory changes from person-to-person but it makes a good point anyway. we really need to communicate much better, otherwise one day we might just forget how to speak to another person anymore with our mouths!
  15. In 2009 everyone said that 2012 was the best movie of the year. Then Avatar came along and everyone forgot about 2012 so is there any movie to watch out for this year? Of course one can't talk about the regional movies because they won't make it internationally, so let's just stick to the movies like Avatar which are a hit everywhere. So does anyone know of a movie like that which will make it big this year? There's bound to be at least one like that every year, isn't it?
  16. now don't get jealous that maybe anwiii is trying to take away your topic jealousy is just a part of life, and i think when living life you should experience all the aspects of it. only then can you truly appreciate it. a person who honestly says that he/she has never been jealous is actually a person who hasn't seen the real world yet. there are many times in life when we get the tiny hinge of jealousy. for most people that may die down, but some build on that and make it a very big thing. this is not a good thing. and jealousy has different effects when it is between friends and strangers. in case of friends, jealousy is really harmful because it breaks the bond between them. ive seen some of my friends lose their friendship over silly matters which led to jealousy. this is not a healthy trend and seriously questions the character of those people. in case of strangers, maybe the only harmful thing that can happen is that the two people may develop hatred for each other. if it leads to something big, then they may try to cause harm to each other also. so this is also not a very good thing. so i started by saying jealousy is a part of life and ended by saying its not a good thing. well i may sound confused but to sum it up i'll say that we should try to contain the feeling of jealousy at all times. even the thought of being jealousy counts as "experiencing it" and after that we should immediately try to bury that feeling!
  17. sms is a great way to have fun whenever one gets bored and these pranks are a good way to kill time, and for one 'prank session' at least 20-30 msgs can be used up soon. no wonder thousands of messages are sent every month by a single person who enjoys such things. in the long term it's not a healthy habit, but for now i don't think this is such a big deal if the people have a life out of texting too if they learn to balance it out then there's no harm in it. eventually they'll "grow up" and reduce the texts and focus on calls and real-life meetings
  18. there's competition in this area as well? i text around 4000 msgs per month and i spend Rs.50 (a little more than $1) per month to get a 5k sms pack. i dunno how i end up using so many smses - and i honestly have no idea what i text about - it just happens unknowingly. sometimes the conversations carry on well into the night and in an hour 100 msgs can easily be sent! i guess this is an addiction that has to be fought just like the other addictions. talking and meeting in real life is obviously more fun but this is more convenient as the people can't stay with us all the time. i have some friends with whom im on good terms only through text. when we get a chance to talk we dont talk to each other much! now that's a weird habit but its true - and we feel comfortable with more texts than talks!!
  19. My college is organizing a small technical event which would see a few of the local colleges participate. It's not anything huge but at our level it's pretty big Anyway, it's obvious that a website needs to be started for this, giving details about the various events and all the things that the participants need to know. Since this is a local college I don't expect much traffic and it will peak only during the time when the event is actually held. That's the reason I'm considering to start this website using the decade hosting plan offered by t17 (oops still cant stop using that name ). But I'm a bit confused about the amount of bandwidth that will be used. I know that bandwidth depends on the number of visitors and the nature of the website content, so I will give out estimates of these both and could someone help me figure out whether the 1GB per month bandwidth will be enough for the site? There are around 3-4000 students in my town at the most, only half of them will ever think of visiting the website. As for the content, I intend to use a CMS like Joomla or Drupal to build the site, and there won't be too many pictures. I intend to keep a video soon but dunno whether that's allowed or not over here. Anyway, even with the video, the whole matter won't exceed the 100mb limit and I'm guessing that browsing the whole site would eat away around 10-15mb of bandwidth for each visitor. Add that figure to the number of visitors and I'm exceeding 1GB already. This is where I'm confused. So could someone help me figure this out please? Should I use the decade plan or opt for a Logic plan?
  20. if i remember right, this has happened before - the mycents stopped altogether for a few days and then after that they were being updated really fast. maybe thats because when it stopped updating a lot of traffic was reduced so when it was restarted there wasn't much traffic and the updates became much faster. as soon as the regular traffic began pouring in, I guess things became normal-paced again this is just my guess and I'm sure there is a more logical explanation to this whole matter. anyway its not the time to think about all that - it's time to start posting before it stops again
  21. I don't think it's being done manually - it would take a lot of time to do that since at any given time we have a lot of active members who keep on posting so to keep on updating that in such a short time is not humanely possible! I believe the script is back in action and it is updating the cents much more faster than before - i don't think i have seen my counter move so fast before!
  22. Yes it's always nice to get a birthday greeting, but using it as a means to get back old members may or may not work out that much. But i do agree that it is a good suggestion and is indeed worth trying. will it be a lot of work to get this system up and going? i don't know much about automatic mailers so im not sure how much work this means for the admin but if its a lot then it can definitely wait because we have more pressing issues in the forum right now.
  23. Yahoo - I paid off my due in the last second yet again! And looks like I got off to a healthy start on my next payment as well. This is so cool Thanks a lot!!! And just in case, I think I'd better stock up on some cents as long as the update system is alive
  24. well yes i too feel the myCENTs rate has dropped a bit - I made some quite lengthy posts but didn't even get a dollar with all those put together, and I've already received my second overdue notice today I'm just eight cents away from paying my dues and I have only one day!!! Well I just hope they don't cancel my account immediately coz I've been posting (if not a lot, at least little) and if I had gotten the myCENTs on time I would definitely have managed to pay off my invoice earlier. I'm just hoping that the system starts working soon enough! I've gotten used to waiting till the last day to pay the invoices but have always managed to pay off the due at least at the last second, because the cents were coming in on time - but this time I'm a bit scared as to what will happen. Just hoping for the best to happen!
  25. This is really funny - why would someone want to buy a small game for $400?! Someone actually bought it? I would like to meet this person and have a good laugh I think with that amount one could easily buy an advanced game console. Well okay let's put apart the matter of the silly person who bought the app for that insane amount - talking about apple, i've never been able to afford an apple product so i can't really judge how their products are, but looking at the price one will naturally expect total control over the product. but i think apple has limitations with almost every product. the best example is how the ipod wont work on a computer without itunes (at least on windows/mac) or how the iphone works only with particular carriers. these limitations are really crazy and has given the company a mixed image. removing this app from their store wont make any huge difference to that image, but i think most people will agree that this was a right move from the company's side, but it should have been handled a little better, like trying to negotiate with the developer before stripping off the app completely. and the developer has some nerve too, pricing a game at such a crazy price! (i've never visited the app store so i dont know about the prices in there)
