    Mycents

I haven't seen any one-line posts getting deleted but I think the users will get a warning. The only other reason why posts get deleted are because they might be double posted. So take care of it while posting and please don't post one-liners anymore! You will soon get into the habit of posting more so just keep at it.
  2. Hey there Scruppy, I know how irritating it can be to wait for your first mycent update. The counter normally appears after you make five posts, but the only reason it has not appeared even though you have crossed 10 posts is that you are not making long-enough posts. This doesn't mean that you should make rambling posts which deviate off the topic, just in order to make it long. Stick to the topic and make it a decent length, and I'm sure your counter will open soon. If you continue posting at the current length, then your counter may not open before you reach 30 posts! So just put more effort into posting and you'll enjoy the cents soon!
  3. If you're a gamer then there's a good chance that you already know about Farmville, and if you like online games, then there's a better chance that you're already playing Farmville! It has managed to attract 80 million people from all over the world, so all those who didn't sign up might have been thinking whether this is a good game or not.Personally I never felt that Farmville was a good game. And I'm sure there are a bunch of people who will agree with me. The only reason it became a huge success was because it offered a chance to people to do something which they couldn't dream of doing in real life. Sure, GTA works on the same concept too, but its too long and tiring, while all it takes is 5 minutes per day to enjoy Farmville (or at least that's how you think in the beginning). Another advantage FV had was that it was on Facebook, the largest social networking site. Coming back to the point, there was never actually any real fun in the game - it was just plowing, seeding, harvesting over and over again. The ribbon collection, items collection were boring and some suspect it a scheme by Zynga to earn money!Keeping all this in mind, I never encouraged my friends to play FV (although I grudgingly played myself now and then) until recently, when I discovered that this is the best time to start (or restart) playing Farmville. Since this is a debate forum I would like to put them out in points and this is not copied material in case anyone gets a doubt seeing the post length! :)1) FV has introduced a crafting feature or something like that - what it does is that it allows you to start a side-business; that of a winery, a spa, or a bakery. So when you're bored working at your farm, you can combine the farm work along with this side-business and make more profits and compete with your friends in the business.2) Another new feature introduced is the beehive. When this was introduced, there was a flurry of activity among players to collect 200 bees before their friends could! This was a sort of a race and I'll have to admit that it was sort of fun in a weird way! Now a lot of people have already collected 200 bees and the hive has just become part of their farm, but it's useful when they produce pollinated seeds which can be used to get more bushels.3) Another "collecting" race is the shovels, which are used to build an underground cellar, to expand storage space to 500. So now you don't have to waste precious farm space to build storage buildings - this small underground cellar can store upto 500 of your extra items and saves a lot of space on the farm. Unlike the bees, shovels can be collected for an unlimited number (although you don't get more storage after 500). I've seen a couple of my friends cross 2000 already! It's an insane race, but fun.4) The pigsty is yet another new building, used to put together 20 pigs, and these pigs can then be sent on "hunts" to find truffles. It seems to be an interesting concept but we'll have to wait and see what more this new building can do. For now though, it's not so interesting. But it's indeed a reason to watch out for as it could get bigger!5) This is the most useful feature till now, and I suspect that it's being copied from Frontierville - friends can do a lot more now than just fertilise your farm - they can plow the land, harvest trees, animals and crops. They'll perform these actions and they will become valid only if you agree to accept their help. It's a time-saving feature and it's a win-win situation. This are just a few reasons to return to Farmville. I'm actually enjoying the 15-odd minutes that I spend on the farm daily. There's a lot more to do now and the variety keeps me satisfied and relaxed, instead of thinking it to be a monotonous job. So if you've stopped playing FV, or haven't played till now, take a look at the new and improved game - you just might like it!
  4. Well at least the topic gives some information about what's new in the latest version. I searched and there wasn't any topic regarding Maverick Meerkat yet. And as I said I shall post a more meaningful topic after I try it out myself. I'm downloading the DVD iso through torrent (there isn't a torrent for the CD image yet ) so it's taking a lot of time for the download to be over.
  5. If people still use hotmail it is because they've got habituated to using the service. It's something like using Internet Explorer - it's there already in a new system and so it will naturally be used by a lot of people. I don't think there are a lot of people signing up for hotmail willingly these days. That doesn't mean gmail is the leader, but hotmail definitely can't catch up with even small email service providers. So it's a good thing that gmail is trying to get complete control over the market by providing features like priority inbox. I'm sorry, yordan. Now that you've mentioned that it is a problem to read my posts I will do my best to write more politely. I hope there is no other problem with my posting other than the lack of capital letters. Oh, and thanks for not adding a "warning" - that would have cost me dearly at this time.
  6. another good ending to this question would be - there are thousands of people stealing pictures to use on their blogs and websites so you might think you can also get away with it. most probably you may get away with it because there are simply too many sites to trace, but it is still illegal and nothing will change that. so never use the images without proper permission.
  7. a new ubuntu release is always a matter of interest for linux enthusiasts and i am no exception. i'm no expert in linux and i'm not a developer either. i'm just a user who's excited with every new release and wants to try it out as soon as possible. so when i heard that the beta version of ubuntu 10.10 was out, i rushed to the ubuntu site to grab a copy and am typing this thread to pass the time while the file is being downloaded there's no major change this time (like the 10-second boot time that was introduced in the previous version) but there are a bunch of upgrades to already existing features, which should make it interesting. the first big change one can expect to notice is the new installer, which relies heavily on graphical appeal. i saw this in a video on youtube, and the rest of the install process seemed to be the same. after reaching the desktop, you'll probably find no change at all! the default wallpaper (which i usually change within 10 seconds after the first run) seems to have gotten some orange colour in it, and apart from that there's no big change in the theme.since this is still the beta, there are bound to be some issues with it. for example in the video, rhythmbox crashed while trying to close it, and gwibber couldn't add a twitter account (this has been mentioned in the ubuntu page as well - it will work after some updates). one interesting update is that when you run rhythmbox, there are sound controls and playback controls available from the volume control button on the top panel. so you need not open the player everytime you want to change the track or something like that. i am waiting to try and see whether this works only for rhythmbox or for other players like vlc as well.another change is the redesign of the ubuntu software center. this was introduced in 9.10 and its design was changed in 10.04, and now it is changed again. as soon as you open it, you can see some featured apps on the home page which might interest you. another interesting change here is the addition of the "software to purchase" section. software for linux has almost always been free, but anyone will tell you that if you're looking for top-quality software, then you have to pay for it. but unfortunately, all the software developers haven't ported their software because they think linux users won't pay for their software. so it seems ubuntu software center is all set to change that. i hope software developers will start producing linux versions of their software as well so that they can sell it through ubuntu software center. In 10.04, the GIMP was missing, and in this version, along with GIMP, F-Spot has been removed too. I guess it's not a big matter since they can be installed within minutes, but users without internet connections might find it a bit irritating. i think ubuntu is thinking that all of their users must have good access to the internet because so many things about it are dependent on an internet connection. well after giving so many advantages, i guess this is jut one small disadvantage!oops, looks like i talked about it a lot - but what to do - the download is going on slowly. i think i better stop here because i don't want to say more without trying out the system myself. i'll install it in virtualbox and give a review and post it here so that if anyone is interested () they can have a peek at it.
  8. i've always liked gmail only for one thing - it offers the best spam protection ever, and i have never seen an unwanted mail appear in my inbox till now. as for the other features, i never really had much use for them because i dont get too much email anyway. just a few notifications from social networking sites and of course -the invoices from Xisto - Web Hosting. but im sure there are some of us who receive a lot of emails daily. some receive over 20, some over 50, and some get even above 100 emails per day! managing their inbox,i.e., deciding whih email to read first, which email needs to be replied to first, can be tough to do, when you have a large amount of emails waiting and less amount of time to attend to them. most of the times you may perhaps read just a few mails and put away the remaining for later. but how will you know where your most important email is? it could sitting at the bottom, under all those other emails which aren't so important. understanding this, google has come out with a new feature for their email service and has named it as the "Priority Inbox". As the name suggests, the purpose of this new feature is to prioritise the gmail inbox an sort the incoming mails as they come in. so how exactly is the sorting done? it's simple - the inbox observes your reading habits - which emails you read first and which emails you keep for later. then it recognises the emails that come from that source and sorts them so that they appear above all other emails and you can attend to to them immediately instead of having to search through all the other mail. for this system to work correctly, the user has to first "train" the priority inbox to recognise important mails. to do this, the user has to give show how important the mail is by adding a "+" or "-" to the email in terms of priority. then when the email from that source arrives, it is compared with the other sources, checking how much "+" it has over the others, and is sorted accordingly. it may take a while for all this to work correctly, but if you think about it, in the long term, this is definitely very beneficial as it could save you loads of time. the "less important" mail doesn't go to the spam folder or get deleted, but instead it just goes down in the inbox that's all. so even if a mail from your office arrived hours before a mail from your home, if you have given correct priority, the office mail will show before the home mail, thus directing your attention towards it. i think this is a really useful feature from the gmail team and i have activated it as soon as i saw what it could do. if you want to know more about it, you can visit the page and watch the introductory video that google has provided. https://www.google.com/gmail/about/ you can activate it from your inbox too. just look for the "priority inbox beta" link at the top-right corner of the screen. you can see the video from this link too and you will be given a choice whether or not to activate it. its still in beta (and will continue to be so for a long time, because this is google!) so it will take some time to get used to, but i'm sure once you get the hang of it, you will find it to be very useful. the only people who won't find this feature too appealing or useful are those who don't get a lot of email and can easily view all their new mails without wasting much time. so unless you are a person who gets a lot of emails daily, this feature isn't for you - think about it!
  9. i used some local brands in order to save some money but they always gave grainy images and were not up to the quality. so its better to go in for a branded webcam as they offer excellent quality and more importantly-warranty! logitech is the first name i can think of while trying to find a good webcam. they make good computer products and its no exception in this category as well. the pricing is also well-balanced i think - not too high and not too low either!
  10. i got those irritating sites too from google where there's hardly any matter and the content is auto-generated. what's good is that most of the time wikipedia is there to help me out with what i'm looking for, so i don't usually need to go to page 2 of the google search results. only for a few search terms i have to bear looking at such auto sites with no content. it would be really good to see google fix this. if other search engines fix it first i still won't use them because they still need to come up to the level of google first! some members want to get a lot of mycents soon. it could be due to an overdue invoice waiting for them, or just the urge to buy their hosting soon. but what they don't realise is that copying content to earn mycents quickly will blacklist them and this may affect their hosting services as well. so this is not at all recommended. if you're in such a hurry to buy hosting use your own money instead of trying to cheat the company which is giving it to you for free!
  11. yeah a better thing is to play the pc game - warcraft instead of the online world of warcraft. online play is fun but only for a brief time. and after reaching level 80 in world of warcraft you'll still be feeling a sort of emptiness, and a desire to do something more. of course there will be a sense of achievement but it will be shortlived and you will always be wanting more and the addiction will never stop! so if you haven't already started its better not to start only
  12. thank you for your replies everyone. i think i will practise more using xampp and once i am sure about my skills i think then only i will put up my site online. of course there's no real danger because its not any special site but still its best to be secure no matter what. that's right - my website is nothing special but i think some amateur hackers look for personal sites like these to try out their skills before going for the bigger sites so its better to be safe and protect my tiny site, even if no one else is going to visit it! thanks for the article - i like reading top ten lists!
  13. ie6 is certainly not out of the picture yet, at least not completely. even in my college there are a few computers which still run the old ie6. i have managed to convince the lab faculty to switch to firefox but there are still a few people who prefer the old fashioned ie just because they are "comfortable" with it! i guess what's annoying for a few people is just a routine comfort for others!
  14. sometime back, when i was learning html, one of my friends suggested that i skip to learning php and start coding in php directly. however i continued to learn html and then proceeded to looking into the basics of php. along the way i've seen many people warning beginners about using php codes directly online, without testing them for security. for html there was no danger of security because its all static. but php brings in dynamic programming and i kept seeing people telling each other to be careful about what to keep in the site because online hackers will be looking for amateurish websites and break into them easily.all this made me wonder, what is it with php and security?! is it dangerous to code in php online directly? should all the aspects of php be learnt before i start using php pages in my website? i am doubtful about all this and am looking for some answers. anyone who has some experience with php please answer this so that i can start using basic php pages in my website. thanks a lot for your time.
  15. actually some people do recognise their pictures on other websites but mostly they do not bother to penalise the owners because its a sort of free publicity. however, this is still ILLEGAL and you would be better off taking the permission of the original owner of the picture(s) beforehand. it will be irritating to write emails for every little picture that you want to use but its better to be safe, right? for now your website may or may not be too popular. but when it grows in popularity it will be seen by more people and if one irritated picture owner catches hold of your site using their picture without permission, you could be in deep trouble, depending on the county you are in! so be safe and take permission for every picture that is not users. most people give permission as long as you link back to their site. good luck!
  16. sillysoul21 already said that it is a random comment. and i think its about placing a semicolon ( at the end of every statement in php! many new users forget inserting the semicolon after each statement and this is what sillysoul21 is saying....or atleast that's what i understood from that. @sillysoul21: not only in php but in other languages like c,c++ we need to insert a semicolon at the end of the statement. its an important feature because it siginifies that the statement has ended and the compiler can then proceed to the next line. i know how frustrating it can be when you have written everything right but just fogot to put semicolons at the end of each statement! just get into the habit of inserting the semicolon - it will take time but you will slowly learn to insert it automatically. it will become an automatic thing and you wont forget it at all - just takes some time!
  17. That user must have posted some content from another source and did not put it in quotes. that is not allowed here because it counts as an unfair means to gain mycents. so the mods must have inserted quote tags in those posts and the mycent script deducted mycents accordingly. and since mycents were already awarded for those posts, to balance the loss the user's counter has gone into the negative. now the user has to earn $5 in the forums through good posts to make the counter zero again, and then it will start counting positive again.
  18. yahoo was one of the pioneers of internet search engines. they had a good idea and if im not wrong, they were the ones to introduce internet advertising on a large scale too. they had a complete web portal when people were struggling to maintain standalone websites. so they had good popularity back then. but then they did a huge mistake and that was to complicate their own website. there was too much to do on the site and the users were a confused lot! yahoo's bad luck continued by the arrival of google, which remains the simplest search engine to date. all its complexity is hidden inside and the main google site can simply be used to go anywhere and do anything from the main page. this is something which yahoo has failed to achieve and it clearly shows in their performance. on older computers, it takes some time to load the flash content and complex tables that the yahoo site has, whereas it hardly takes three-four seconds to load the google site because there's just a logo and a search box to be loaded! and the search results are more accurate in google than in any other engines. i honestly didn't bother to find out if yahoo and bing had a sort-of language like google has, using many keywords. even if they did, i think it wont be as effective as google's results. on slow or new computers, google loads the fastest, gives the most options, and gives the most effective results. so it's the best option available for now and recently i heard that yahoo and bing are joining hands to compete against google. two bad search engines combined together still make one big bad search engine! too bad they dont realise this. so let's all stick to google and enjoy the best way to kill time!
  19. i think i have been replying to some other similar threads asking about online games - oh well, at least i'm spreading the word about my favourite game and getting a few mycents in return the game im talking about is Tibia (https://secure.tibia.com/mmorpg/free-multiplayer-online-role-playing-game.php) and it is a really good mmorpg, only if you're planning to play it for a short while, because it gets repetitive and boring after some months and what's more it's difficult to find a good team on that game. for new players though, it's an interesting experience to go through the old-fashioned 2D scrolling environment and finish the objectives. the real fun starts when you reach the mainland where there are a lot more players and lots more places to visit and roam. its fun when you have a lot of time to kill so give it a try and see if it suits your taste.
  20. s This is a good idea but I feel somehow that it won't make much difference whether or not there are ads in the site from the beginning itself.Except for the people who are totally alien to the internet, almost everyone knows how the internet ads system works and they know that clicking on the ads will support the site owner. So having ads from the beginning isn't much of a loss as the people will click on them if they like the content otherwise they will just ignore them. as long as the ads are not messing up wth the site design and blocking the site content, its fine to have them in good positions so that monetization can begin from the very start. i've seen some of my friends overseas start sites with just a single banner ad at the top or in the footer and they reported that they are getting something like 5-10 clicks per day, which is not at all bad for a beginner site. so i think its best to have ads from the starting itself.
  21. ys your story is inspiring indeed and i agree that the top colleges and schools are not always the best and in the end it is up to the student to try and get the best out of the institution. the institution itself can only help so much. the majority of the work has to be done by the student. while you were lucky to have facilities at the local community college, the equivalent to the "community colleges" over here are either in poor condition or totally non-existant in some places. so the only option left is to join some college where the fees is cheap but that means there won't be many facilities there either. its a tough situation, but it will change, just slowly though.
  22. while it's true that it's always better to go legit and pay for what you want, i feel the better option here is to stop playing world of warcraft altogether. in the beginning it was really fun as it offered an escape to a virtual fantasy land and when it was introduced the concept of mmorpgs was just starting to get popular, and so the game appealed to a huge audience. but today everyone from a school kid to a retired person has a busy schedule to fill and fitting world of warcraft in that seems to be an utter waste of time. that too paying a monthly fees for playing the same kind of game every month isnt a very appealing idea. sure they introduce new quests, etc into the game but its monotonous if seen on a large picture.then there's the battle for the private server versus the paid server. some players get ahead of the legit players and show off their characters proudly and all this fills the legit players with guilt and remorse. why all this mess just over a video game?! so don't you think its better to stop playing altogether? its a much better option and although in the starting it might be boring and difficult to get rid of the addiction, in the long term the players will feel much better not having to keep up with the game world.
  23. steam is a good concept but its working well only in countries like usa and uk where there are good internet connections and the gamers are actively buying new titles always. in other countries the internet connection is mostly slow and people find it difficult to download large amounts of data off the internet. and in the first place, they are not ready to buy new games on a regular basis. i know a few people who buy one popular title only once every three months. they are very fond of gaming but due to their budget problems they can afford to buy one game only once in three months. the rest of the time they have to be content with playing games like farmville, mafia wars, etc. steam says that there are over 200 games priced under $5 and although i haven't seen the list of titles in that category, i think we can safely say it doesn't have many popular titles in there. but i think steam will start gaining popularity after a few years because things are changing across the world and governments of various countries are realising the importance of having good internet connectivity and thus they are taking steps to bring faster internet at more affordable prices to the people. once a large number of gamers have a good internet connectionand some money to spend, then im sure steam will pick up steam
  24. you have conveniently forgotten to mention that these sites don't work well unless we have a very large amount of active referrals who click the ads regularly. you've included your referral link here hoping to get more referrals isn't it I'm sure most people here know about these sites already and maybe you won't be getting as many referrals as you expected. and anyway i think referral links aren't allowed to be posted in the forums? im not sure and am too lazy to check in the rules now. anyway i think these sites are a waste of time unless you have an army of referrals wasting their time to earn your money! some other useful work can be done instead of spending time on these sites and if we find some good work we can earn much more than what these ptc sites offer. anyway, good luck to those who are planning on joining these sites.
  25. A lot! I don't remember the exact number but I think it's 1 cent per click or maybe even less. So that makes a thousand clicks for getting $10. And that means you have to get more than 1500 visitors and hope that atleast thousand of them click on the ads that you placed in the website. As you can imagine, that's really a LOT of traffic for a beginning website, so before you start placing ads on your site, try to put some good content on your site in order to attract some traffic. Then you have to put in some good keywords so that you will get more traffic from search engine results. I hope you know about SEO and all that stuff. Good luck with your site, hope that you get a lot of traffic soon!
