That Text Below Our Avatar? Inconsequential ramblings
H.O.D replied to inverse_bloom's topic in Web Hosting Support
That option will be enabled once you reach 500 posts. That's done to ensure that you're a loyal member and won't leave Xisto in a hurry, so that's why you have to wait until you reach 500 posts to change your "Under-the-avatar" name! All the best I hope you reach there soon. -
There are a lot of people who are desperately waiting for such a transfer system, because in case of emergencies you never know what might happen - one person might need to immediately renew his domain and may not have enough money in paypal, etc or there may be other legit reasons. But it is indeed true that making such a system active would destabilize the forum as there would be too many abusers trying to take wrong advantage of the system. So for now I think it is the best decision not to allow such a system to exist at all.

It's all about enthusiasm....if you're more enthusiastic about a particular program then you will enjoy it no matter what. If you have the slightest doubt about its reliability then you will begin to doubt every aspect of it! I like Vim because it's fun to do coding inside it compared to othe GUIs and controlling everything with the keyboard is really thrilling too! There may be some loose ends to it but still it makes for a pretty good editor even today. And whether or not you want to use it depends on your own opinion - if you like old stuff then this one's gold! If you prefer to move on with technology then better put Vim aside and use other stuff

in the future 2TB will definitely become too less and then maybe we may need capacities like 320TB, 500TB, etc!!! It will soon become the age of the terabyte. we just need to move on with the times, that's all.

Would You Use Ie Explorer Even If It Wasn't Bundled With Windows?
H.O.D replied to The Simpleton's topic in The Internet
In Windows 7, Microsoft has removed many programs that were earlier bundled together with earlier versions, like Movie Maker, messenger, etc and these have become part of Windows Live Essentials, right? This move signifies Microsoft's belief that these "essentials" aren't considered that essential by most users and so it wont make that much of a difference if they were unbundled. But IE hasn't been removed! So Microsoft is still thinking that its browser is a hit and removing it would make many users unsatisfied - they couldn't be more wrong! I would like to see IE included among Live Essentials as well so that then we can see how many true "fans" exist for the browser! -
Here's an easier way for you - just go to https://blog.canonical.com/2011/04/05/shipit-comes-to-an-end/ and there you can order a free CD of the Ubuntu Linux OS. No hassles of downloading and burning! And you can try it out before installing so that you can know whether or not you can get accustomed to the environment. But trust me,you will love Ubuntu once you try it! And if something goes wrong, there's always the support forum to help you out. As for the shipit site, if you order a single CD, you will get it fast, but just be patient. There's also the option of ordering multiple CDs for distribution, but that will take longer so I won't recommend it yet. You can try out that option later. For now, just order one CD and you will receive it pretty soon, and you can try out Ubuntu in no time

Wow you have 1.5 TB already?! That's really impressive! I never had the need for that much space till now because i prefer storing data in DVDs more. I think I have around 300GB of data in DVDs and another 200GB on my system now, and that's only because I don't have any hi-def content. If I had, then I'm sure the figure would have been much more larger! Well today not many people are preferring to get hi-def content anyway because they can't afford to buy so many discs regularly, and downloading off the net - well, that's a touchy issue but the fact remains that not many people would like to sacrifice 1GB of space for a mere 20 minutes of video! They won't have the proper internet speed as well. That's the reason not many people have the need for such massive hard disks yet...

These days everyone has tons of digital content on their computers - photos, movies and most importantly, music! And for storing all this insane content, we do need a lot of space on the computer. But it's never possible to put all of the content on the system, since fresh content keeps coming in. So most of us resort to storing this data on external hard disks, dvds or other storage media. But by doing this, we won't have access to all of the data at once. So what we need is a hard disk with extreme storage capacity. And today, we have just that - a hard disk that can store 2000 GB (2TB) of data! My question is, would you need such a hard disk? Of course now it is expensive and many people won't be able to afford it, but the prices are bound to come down once competition and popularity increase, but even then, do you have the need for it?! In my case, I would need around 500GB to store all of my content at once place, leaving room for more fresh content to come. With such an insane amount of space as 2TB, I guess maintanance would be a little difficult as we would become a bit too carefree to bother what is on the hard disk. On the other hand, we would never have to bother about running out of space! You could install multiple OSes to your heart's content! Well all that's fine for me - what is your opinion about this beast?

Is Getting Rid Of Glasses Without Surgery Possible?
H.O.D replied to H.O.D's topic in Health & Fitness
Well technically lenses are also a form of glass isnt' it? And it isn't a complete solution and can become dangerous at times too. I wouldn't switch to lenses in a hurry as many people around me have reported problems using lenses. It's convenient for a short while but not a healthy long-term solution. -
I'm glad t meet another "enlightened" Linux soul!! I particularly like your opinion that Linux isn't difficult but different. Many people fail to realize how addictive Linux can get once you start using it. I always try to tell the same things that you have said to my friends and while some have switched, others still prefer to spend their time formatting Windows every month!! I don't think there will be a huge support for Linux in the coming days, but the rate at which people are switching to Linux is encouraging and in 2-3 years I'm sure there will be a lot of rob86s

I've seen a similar thread like this in this forum but it was pretty old and I don't like stirring up quite old threads..... Anyway, the question is the same - is it possible to get rid of glasses without using surgery? There are a lot of experts like Baba Ramdev who say that eyesight can be improved by practising Yoga regularly. But we do not see many people giving positive reviews for this. Why? Because it is very difficult to practically practise yoga for a long time. A lot of people are too lazy to go through the procedure and would rather pay for the surgery and get it done faster. But we all know that laser surgery isn't perfect yet and there are some chances of severe side-effects This doesn't mean that practicing yoga will definitely cure myopia and similar problems, but it definitely helps. It's just that the process is a bit slow. Anyway, other than yoga, does anyone know some other genuine way of getting rid of glasses? If so then please share it here.

Yes I've seen the admin's reply saying that they are upgrading the server clusters or something like that - anyway all that matters is that they've done a great job and there'll be lesser grumbles among members

China is surely growing with each year - that fact is undeniable. And I'm sure the present superpowers are getting more and more nervous about China's growth. It's a good thing after all, but I only wish the internal conflicts, i.e, between the people and the government would settle soon too. Only then would there be some huge impact on other countries. Until China is fighting with itself, I don't think there can be any complete progress. Still, well done!!!

Can A Person Who Has Watched Over 200 Movies Direct One?
H.O.D replied to The Simpleton's topic in General Discussion
I don't think anyone can possibly do this with great success. In the first place, no producer would be willing to give such directors a chance. Let us suppose the 'director' decides to produce his own film. Even then, without any previous knowledge about how film-making is done, he has absolutely no chance of making a good movie. As some people have said above, it is technically possible, but the result will most probably be really very bad! It wouldn't do much good to the producers or the audience so it is better to stop thinking about such projects in the first place!!! -
Wow I didn't expect so many replies so soon! Anyways thanks for clarifying my doubts guys - I'm glad to know that the problem's been solved and I'll make sure to stock up on myCENTs if I have to go inactive again. I'll take care of the quality too, so thanks a lot for the advice

First of all sorry to everyone who feels there's been too much discussion on this topic. This is just my second month in the forums and I have $0.00 in my account, and I need to cough up $3 by the 10th of next month - that's my situation! I've been mostly inactive for the past few days and the last thing I expected upon my return was this thread which said there's a problem with the updation of myCENTs. I found another thread by the same user which said that his CENTs were updated, but in that same thread some other users said their CENTs weren't updated. All this was few days ago and I think a lot of members are getting a but irritated with members like me who are asking about this matter. Look at this post for an example (no offence, just using it as an example!) I'm just worried because my account is empty and there's a bill waiting to be paid in around 15 days. I just wanted to know whether this problem has been solved for all the users or not. Please forgive my impatience in this regard.

Thanks to digital cameras most people have stopped purchasing photo albums, right? But thanks to digital frames, at least these accesories are back in demand. I was thinking of purchasing one as a gift to my friend, but I wanted to know if it's worth the price - are they really good? And are there are heavy disadvantages like short life, etc? I would still buy one even if it had a short life, but it would feel good to know in advance about such things. so please share your experience about these cool gadgets

I would root for bit defender - it tops the charts on all aspects and although some may say its not user-friendly i would still say it's the best compared to the others.

Rio De Janeiro Selected As Venue For 2016 Olympic Games
H.O.D replied to The Simpleton's topic in General Discussion
Isn't that a cool tourist resort? I too heard it's a very beautiful place to visit. But for the Olympics to be held there it must be a really powerful city with good resources I'm sure all the participants will have a really good time in 2016, because that is a very good tourist place to visit and apart from the excitement of participating in the olympics they will also have a good place to chill out!About London....I'm not very excited about the venue but it's not bad either (no offense!) Haven't there been some problems relating something to the London olympics? The logo or something?i don't remember exactly but I did read something about it a long time ago -
Hmm there seems to be a mixed opinion on Xisto over here, but anyway I'd not like to join a purely technical forum - it would get boring sometimes and anyway Xisto is technical enough for me The members here seem very friendly and helpful and the only ruse is that the forums are not so active as I hoped they might be...oh well, everyone's busy with their lives :PThanks for all the encouraging words and advice - I'll take care to see that I get enough myCENTs by 9th. Thanks once again
-
Oh that's a huge relief then - I can surely accumulate enough myCENTs by that time - it's my luck that thanks to my friend I got a site as soon as I joined and all I have to do is maintain it - but this myCENT system can become scary at times like these when you suddenly realize that there isn't much time and that there aren't many topics to post either!!!! Anyway, thanks for the help rvalkass Much appreciated

The due date for the payment of my hosting plan is 10th October '09. I thought that since I have that much time I'll go easy on the posting and thus I posted casually, earning just $1 so far. But to my shock I found that I had received an invoice for the hosting plan today (one week in advance) and now that invoice is saying "Unpaid" because I don't have enough myCENTs to pay for it. I wasn't expecting anything like this and am in a fix as to what to do. Does this mean that my hosting package will be suspended until I pay the invoice? So far nothing as such has happened and my site is still up (whew!) but I'm a bit worried as to what will happen next. Could some experienced user tell me what I have to do now? How much time do I have till I pay the invoice without my account getting suspended? Please help me....thanks a lot for it.

What Would You Do If You Became The World's Richest Person?
H.O.D replied to The Simpleton's topic in General Discussion
well first off I don't really have any desire to become the world's richest person, because I know that if I do become even slightly rich, I would have a lot of headaches as to how to spend all that money, how to keep it safe, etc. There would be no peace of mind at all for me. So deep inside I really wish I don't get a lot of money - just enough to keep me alive is good for me Only in my dreamland I wish to get rich and enjoy all the pleasures and lead a happy life. In the real land however, I'm quite happy without having that much money. Ha ha that's a really cool idea - do let us know if it works out in the future -
Scam Mails Alert Nigerian New Ways Forward
H.O.D replied to damoon's topic in Science and Technology
Most scammers are excellent negotiators. Once you fall in their trap, they fully convince you with their sweet words and friendliness. And once you get in contact with them, consider yourself stuck forever! They won't leave you unless they extract something or the other from you. So it is best to leave such emails unanswered. I once tried to play along with a scammer and acted as if I believed his words. After exchanging 3-4 emails I stopped contacting him. But that idiot didn't leave me and bugged me with emails for two months, each more violent than the last! This is a good example of the scammers' strategy - they just look out for people who reply and they try their best not to let go of those who have fallen in the trap. This is their only trick and if we avoid falling in the trap in the first place then there's no need for any fear of them getting access to bank accounts, etc. Just steer away clear from such emails. If you really win a lottery you'll get someone at your door, not in your inbox!!! -
What Would You Do If You Became The World's Richest Person?
H.O.D replied to The Simpleton's topic in General Discussion
If were to be given such a vast amount of wealth that I would become the world's richest person, then I would do my best to get rid of that wealth soon! Too much money is always evil and makes people do and think evil things - okay not "evil" as shown in movies, but evil in the sense that one becomes proud, treats people below him badly, etc. This sort of snobbish behaviour is really uncalled for and that is why I would try to get rid of th money by giving it to those who are in need of it. Of course before that I would make sure that I have just enough to keep me satisfied for the rest of my life That is obvious of course - almost everyone would think of a motive like that one. Well anyway there's no point in dreaming - that kind of thing is never going to happen to me
