  1. Comodo is certainly a good option to use. I've used it for a while and it worked pretty well. It does take up some disk space considerably, but still it is a good choice if you insist on having a good firewall!
  2. 30MB?! Wow, that's really the smallest Linux distro ever! Obviously there are not going to be a lot of features within it, but it is no doubt a good tool for quickly using as a backup tool. I just tried visiting the site but it is down! It is not opening at all. Now I wonder if that is a temporary problem or a major issue with their website. In any case, I shall definitely be checking this out again for sure. Thanks for this useful piece of info starscream
  3. Right now it doesn't seem as if Google+ or any such website can even remotely threaten the might of Facebook. But it does seem that a whole lot of people are seeing Google+ to be a Facebook Killer, if not now, at least in the future. Google+ API is not going to be made available for a few months, so there is not going to be a lot of functionality on the site right now. Still there are a lot of people faithfully using their Google+ accounts just because it is something that has been put out by Google, and because it has a single feature (privacy) that is very different from Facebook! Facebook took 2-3 years to snatch the #1 spot from MySpace. So I think given some time, Google+ can seriously challenge Facebook and give it a hard time! If I'm not wrong, Google is not in any hurry to make their site a success overnight. They seem to be taking each step very carefully and this seems to be working too! Facebook has recently updated its look again! This can certainly be only due to the "plus" effect! Who knows what is going to take place next. What do you people think; can Facebook go down to Google+ in the near future?
  4. Ubuntu certainly ruled the roost until recent times. But Canonical has made it hard for users to get used to the new versions. I mean, the new users will like the latest version as it is meant to be simple, but the more experienced users are grumbling a lot and that is why Ubuntu is slowly losing its position at the top. At the time when this thread was created (2006) it would have made a lot of sense to choose Ubuntu, but right now the answer more or less seems like Linux Mint, which is like a trimmed down version of Ubuntu itself!
  5. I just replied to a topic regarding why Linux mint is steadily increasing in popularity over Ubuntu. It is unanimously agreed that Ubuntu is a great OS for beginner users of Linux. But of late it has been getting more confusing for new users, which is why they are beginning to look for alternatives llike Mint.My question is not regarding Mint or Ubuntu. It is about the future of the Linux Vs Windows battle. It seems that after a few years, the Linux contender keeps changing, while Microsoft still keeps fighting with Windows, although upgraded. So can't we hope for a stable Linux distro that can keep the majority of its users happy for a long time? Ubuntu is still popular; there is no doubt about that. But the recent changes have severely dentend its popularity and now Mint is threatening to take over and become the new face of Linux. What do you people think would be the future of Linux then? I haven't even started talking about other distros like Fedora or Mandriva or any other one for that matter. Will either of these come up with a new surprise for everyone or is it going to be a battle between Linux MInt and Ubuntu?
  6. Linux Mint is the new Ubuntu! Up until release 9.10, Ubuntu was going strong. But after that somewhere along the way, Canonical lost their way and began to make things more complicated for users, while they were supposedly trying to make things easier! The mp3 codec problem has always haunted Ubuntu, and their new Unity interface which was forced upon users in 11.04 didn't help things. Now I hear that starting from version 11.10 there won't be any option for GNOME at all Of course users can still install and use GNOME, but think about the beginner users who do not know how to install GNOME on their own. The only saving grace in 11.04 was the fact that users could still boot into GNOME if they didn't like Unity. The lack of such an option in 11.10 is going to make things very hard for a lot of users to switch to the newer Ubuntu. In such a scenario, Linux Mint does come as a fresh whiff of air, although it is not actually offering something phenomenal!
  7. This is indeed a sad news for all those who were dependent on the distribution channel to get their Ubuntu CDs Now the users will either have to battle with their internet speeds and start downloading, or else they will have to depend on someone else to download a copy for them. Then there is the option of purchasing computer magazines which offer these CDs for free along with the magazine. They do arrive a month later than the release of the distribution, but a month's wait seems better than that wait for the download to be finished!! Honestly though, there will surely be at least one spot in each area which will have a decent download speed, so it might be a good idea to consider getting a download from that spot. Shipit will be sorely missed though
  8. I may not be able to go deep into the technical stuff, but from the early look of WIndows 8, it does look as if it is encouraging more users to start using tablets instead of PCs! Although for the developers there might not be much difference because behind the new visual appeal there will still be the same old Windows framework, right? MS has always rallied strongly for developers to prefer .NET to other platforms, and at the moment it looks like MS just wants users to continue using Windows instead of looking for other alternatives. Chrome OS isn't even close to giving Windows a fight, but it does look like MS has taken up the challenge and is bringing out a whole new Windows to increase the visual appeal for its users. As for developers, this might only make their work more challenging, yet interesting.
  9. All the Windows users who feel that their system is performing better when running XP rather than Vista or 7, may need to upgrade their systems before really judging these two operating systems. Actually Vista and 7 run fine on high-end machines. Vista had problems other than hogging system resources so it failed to get a popular image, but 7 is different. If you have a decent system configuration, then Windows 7 can run quite smoothly and it does not give any of the other technical problems that we saw in Vista. However, a large portion of the people do not upgrade their systems because they are either too busy, or not interested in spending money on an upgrade. It is mostly such people who complain that the new operating systems from Microsoft are not working properly! So in order to get a true public opinion about Vista or 7, first the public needs to upgrade, which is not going to happen any sooner. Until then we are still going to have topics like this one, comparing XP to 7! Each OS is special; it's just that 7 needs much higher configuration to show its true potential.
  10. Wow, the experience of playing NFS on the Wii sounds really amazing On the regular consoles though, NFS doesn't seem to be very exciting anymore. The other day I was playing Burnout:Takedown and was amazed by how it easily managed to surpass even the latest NFS in terms of fun and playability. If an old game like Takedown could better the playing experience of the latest NFS, then it is really a bad thing for the NFS franchise, and is something that the developers of the forthcoming NFS games should take into consideration.
  11. I like Kaspersky for the fact that they update their virus definitions every two hours! No other anti-virus company can claim to do the same. Of course there's no real need for everyone to update their systems every two hours, but it's nice to know that the latest threats are being covered very soon. For those who are anxious about their system's security, this is indeed a boon. Also, Kaspersky utilises very little system resources and this is also very convenient for people who have slow RAM and disk space in their systems. The other anti-viruses like Avira, Bitdefender are also good, but compared to them Kaspersky seems to be a really good brand. I would opt for this one any day.
  12. A bux site is very profitable, but mostly for the owner only. The members too can make good profits, but first they have to make some investment and then maintain their referrals properly before they can see any profits from these sites. Majority of the bux sites are either scams, or else they have very low click rates, pay out very late, or sometimes disappear without a trace! It takes just $25/month to run a bux site so almost anyone can do it. This is enough for us to realise that it is better to stay away from bux sites! IF you're really willing to waste a whole lot of time clicking on ads, then choose Neobux and nothing else. It is the only site which can be completely trusted and has much more advanced features than any other bux site. It's also been proved to be legitimate by thousands of members who've made endless clicks on the site! Neobux will be useful only if you have at least 500 referrals and are ready to invest your time and money. So to cut the long story short, keep away from bux sites as they're of no use in the long term. If you are persistent about joining any bux sites then choose only Neobux.com. I'm not giving this in a link because I'm not interested in wasting hours and days of my life clicking on ads and trying to hunt for referrals
  13. The release candidate has been released just recently and has got some decent reviews. I've been running the beta till now and haven't found any major problems except that Gwibber doesn't work with Twitter yet I hope that is solved in the final stable release, which is coming out on 10th October Just eight more days to go and hopefully 10.10 will get a 10/10 for its features!
  14. I know that the answer to that question is most probably NO, but what I need to know is that is there any chance of getting back the account with an appeal made after a year has passed? My account was disabled because of me cheating () by clicking on my ads myself and I agree what Google did was the right thing. However that was a year ago when all I had was a blog on blogger and hardly any visitors at all. Now I have my own website and am getting a decent amount of visitors per month (even though I don't have attractive content), and I am thinking of placing ads on the site. However, I don't want to use any other service than Adsense because it's the only one which is sensible and most profitable if it clicks. Besides, I've used Bidvertiser once and got bad results. So I want to appeal to google to renew my account. I once read somewhere that if the site stats are good then google may consider giving the person another chance. Does anyone know if this is possible? Or am I just have to say bye-bye to my dreams of having an adsense account again?
  15. It's been done by someone else already? If possible, could you give us more information about this? I'm very interested to know who "inspired" Google with this idea Nevertheless, Google seems to have a winner upon its hands and this feature has been working really well. GMail itself was in beta for a long time and we all know how it worked out So I'm sure this version too will have a good, long beta time but will be used by a lot of people who won't notice the beta tag at all!
  16. I've tried putting ads on my site and tried to focus on the content instead of how many clicks were made, but I guess the type of content I had wasn't attractive enough. You mention "a bunch of stuff"; could you please give an example or two? I already pay my web hosting charges using myCENTs so whatever small amount I earn I could use it as pocket money. So if you have any useful hints for me that would be wonderful to know. Oops, sorry I couldn't spot this site in all the clutter on the page and thought to post in the best possible place. I'll be more watchful in the future
  17. Hi there caleb, first of all congratulations for getting your mycent counter started As web_designer said, no one really knows how the sytem works. Especially now that the system has been upgraded, it's more of a mystery as to how it works because there are so many factors to be considered. When the old system was up (that was when I was more active), I remember concentrating on the length and quality of the posts, instead of how many posts I made. So if done right, you can earn $1 with a single post, provided it's good. Also, making too many posts in a short time seems to be bad for the earnings, or at least that's what I noticed. So focus on making good quality posts and make them long enough (but not tooooooo long!) as those two factors are important. I haven't been very active since the new mycent system came so I'm not sure about this, but it does seem that the updates are taking place roughly after 48 hours each time. So I guess after making 5 posts, its better to keep posting instead of just waiting for the counter to open. I hope that helped.
  18. As you said people like simulation games and they have been around for a long time. Offline games like "The Sims" have always been popular. But they're meant to be played when you have a lot of time to spare. Farmville is an online game and it doesn't eat up a lot of time and this is the main reason for its success, and I doubt Zynga themselves will be able to repeat such a success again. It's simple, easy and attractive. And now that they're adding new features regularly, it's only going to attract more people! Oh, and I forgot to add another new feature that was introduced, and this is a very useful feature indeed. Garages have been introduced into the game, and they are used to upgrade the three vehicles - the tractor, the seeder and the harvester, so that they can perform their respective actions on more number of plots now. The upgrades are of five levels and after being upgraded to level five, the vehicles can modify 16 plots at the same time (plow, seed or harvest)! Earlier it was just 4 plots. So this is a very useful addition which will no doubt save a lot of time for those who don't mind using up their fuel more quickly. And even as I'm typing this I'm looking at farmville wikia in which some user has commented about some big feature being added soon. So Zynga seem to be on the right course to attract more people!
  19. That's a good suggestion. I've seen some Dell computers with slim-line cases and I think it's very difficult to upgrade or modify parts in these. In any case I'm not looking to buy a branded PC and would prefer to assemble it myself. Your other point that there's no real future-proof PC also sounds sensible. When Crysis came out I think no one was ready to play it at the highest setting and it might have been a while for most people to upgrade their systems so that they could play it So each game may bring new surprises so in the end it is up to the gamer to choose.
  20. I started a thread about the new Ubuntu 10.10 Beta, but that wasn't a review in the real sense. This, however is a review, i.e., I'm writing this after trying out the beta software myself. The first thing I need to say is that apparently, there are some differences between the Windows version and the Linux version of this beta. The changes aren't major, and most of the changes are customizable, which is a good thing. As soon as I started Firefox 4 for the first time, I was shown a video about Firefox Sync which I'm seeing for the first time. It's something like cloud computing, but here, instead of the data in your computer, you can carry around the data in your browser and use it on any computer in the world using Firefox Sync. So all your bookmarks, history and saved passwords can come along with you wherever you go. You need to create a Sync account for this first. Since I'm not going anywhere now I haven't tested it out yet The next new feature is that the bookmarks toolbar has been condensed to a tiny button beside the address bar, allowing a drop-down menu to show all the toolbar bookmarks. There's an option to show the entire toolbar and I chose that right away! Another change I noticed was that there's an option to put the "tabs on top" of the page. This reminds you of Chrome and I think it's a useful feature, though some might disagree. In Windows I think this appears automatically, but in Linux I had to go to the view menu and change this setting. One change which is present only in the windows version is that the menu is one big button now instead of the whole toolbar (not available in Linux) The next change is graphical. While a page is loading, its favicon shows a loading graphic, somewhat like a pie chart, and after the page has loaded the website's favicon is displayed. Not a huge thing but it looks neat! Since this is a beta version, Mozilla obviously wants feedback from users! For this they've included a drop-down box at the right of the address bar where users can report what they like and what they don't like. Apart from this I got a pop-up survey, or "test" which doesn't open in a tab but a small window without disturbing the user's work. You can either close off the window or fill out the survey; its useful to do the latter since it's to improve the software. In terms of speed I didn't notice anything great - as fast as ever - but then I'm nobody to test technical aspects; this is just a review of what I've noticed from using it so far. The only downside of this so far is that most of my favourite add-ons, including themes do not work I guess this will depend on the developers mostly, but I hope it will be better in the final release.
  21. Yes I have noticed such sites and I think the most famous of them is the Dell brand, which sells the Alienware PCs and Laptops. They are meant especially for gaming and have brilliant configurations, but they're very expensive and one could buy a brand new car instead of the most expensive Alienware computer!
  22. Wow that thread had replies right from 2005! I skipped over to the last page to find the latest specs and those are some really amazing configs! I'm drooling right now thinking about the power in those components But it'll be a really long time before I can even consider to think of buying them
  23. When I say "earning online", I don't refer to selling/offering services on the internet, which are very good ways of earning. I'm referring to those in which the lazy user doesn't have to do anything much to earn I'm referring to PTC/GPT sites and their like. I don't want to earn thousands of dollars using the internet and I know its impossible through ptc sites. But I just wish I found a site where I could get to that minimum cashout in days and not months/years!I located the site ptc-investigations.com which has a good list of legit sites and those which are scam. There is another list called the "Elite" list which has sites which have been online since a long time and have been paying out continuously. One common thing about all these "elite" and "legit" sites is that they take a lot of time to reach to the cashout. This may be reassuring that it is a legit site but also irritating because a lot of time is wasted clicking ads and filling out surveys and the result is very less. It's not fair to expect high payouts for doing nothing, but somehow I get the feeling that the admins of the site are not paying out on a 50-50 basis, which is actually a fair share to both parties. Some sites give as high as $0.05 per click while some go as low as $0.000001! So obviously there must be some amount that is meant to be shared with the user but is not being done so!So what I am asking is that is there any hope of finding a good site in which users can reach the payout within days? (Please don't say neobux ) I know getting more referrals can make any site easy but its hard these days because everyone seems to be knowing about these sites and are staying away from it!
  24. The last PC game that I bought was Prince of Persia:Two Thrones which was released in 2007 if I remember correctly. It ran on my Pentium4 PC after I turned off all effects and the gameplay was very smooth. After that, I couldn't buy any other PC game because my system just doesn't support the new games due to lack of a graphics card (and the other specs as well). So I am looking forward to buying a new PC which will play almost all the newly released games without a hiccup (except the ones like Crysis which demand too-high specs)Every year there is some or the other game which demands higher specs than the rest of the games and this creates confusion in people like me who are worried about their PC config. What creates more confusion is the sheer number of graphics cards available in the market. Which one is better for future-proof gaming, which one is the best fit in my budget, and such questions are confusing a lot on whether or not to upgrade the PC at all! What I'm asking in this thread is not to suggest a configuration according to my budget, but according to your opinion, which type of configuration is the best future-proof gaming PC? By "future", I mean at least five years from now, the PC should still be able to play the latest games, at least in the minimal mode! That is quite a challenge, but is there such a config available? If so, what would such a PC cost? If someone could take the time to answer these questions it would be very helpful to me as I can then start dreaming about owning it
  25. It was way back in 1997 that Duke Nukem Forever was first announced. From 13 years it's kept fans on tenterhooks on whether or not it will be made or not! There was news that it was canceled permanently, or that it would still take a lot of time to make, and a lot more other rumours. But not it has been publicly confirmed that the game is back in development and will be releasing next year for the PC, XBox360 and the PS3. Gearbox Software and Take Two Interactive are bringing this game to the audiences next year, which has seen a long battle over its rights and what-not It's amazing that some people are still not bored of waiting for this game, while a lot of people have forgotten about it. It's amazing that the interest has survived through more than a decade, and I think it is most likely to sell like wild on its first day. It's another matter entirely whether or not it will be a hit Regardless of how the game is, I think owning this game would be a matter of pride, because of its history. I'm already thinking of ways to start saving to get this game somehow even though I don't have a PC strong enough to play it yet. What about the rest of the gamers here? Are you ready to play the long-delayed game, or have you moved on?
