Is There Anything For Linux That Tells You What Running Processes Are?
truefusion replied to rob86's topic in Software
I could understand why a program like that would not be found under Linux, as the starting days of Linux people had to do all the maintenance work for their system and therefore would (should) always know what is what. Now-a-days, with distributions out there doing the work for you, you'd have to do some research yourself to figure things out. However, if i were to make my own program that attempts to provide the information you are looking for based on the list of processes that are active on your machine, at least on a Debian system, i would use certain apt tools, like apt-file and apt-cache—maybe even the man command for man-pages. I would use apt-file to search the repository for the packages that contain the file that was loaded into memory and after finding the package i would use apt-cache to provide the description of the package. You could probably make a simple Python script that does this by having it call these commands and parse stdout (standard output). On RPM-based systems i do not know how i would go about in doing it, though. -
The game came with an old graphics card of mine (XFX 8600 GT). I can't say that i'm good at the game, but i did beat the campaign. It is an interesting game, unlike your normal RTS. I like the fact that you don't need the CD to play it (although an internet connection is required for playing without the CD), but the game itself takes up around 6 gigabytes of space—all the updates took forever to download. I don't play the game much, though.

It is a nice layout, but all that space on the right just for a search form? Take out that second column and move the search form to the bottom right area of the banner or something. Likewise, remove the text in the banner and make it real text and position it more to the bottom right area of the banner. All "you" (i quote this word as it could have been EZGenerator) did was forget to close one HTML element. Even though it shows 6 errors, you only need to fix one line of code, not six. Not sure if other mistakes are found in the other pages, though.
-
Another one? The other one isn't even a few months old. Compared to the other one, the graphics card is a downgrade. While the RAM posted in this topic is faster than the other one, it's still a CAS latency of 9—you can do better. If you're going to go with an Antec case, i'd go with the 1200—not that much of a price difference.

Right now i can't differentiate between STARI and Lyme—and it seems a bit too early to really tell, but i'd rather be prepared for the worst. I hear the tests aren't good indicators if done within a month's time since the tick bite (but, then again, from my research, neither are they that great for those who've had it for years), and there doesn't seem to be much information on STARI. The first day of symptoms i've had was a soar throat (that doesn't seem to want to go away, and i'm losing my voice a bit because of it), a really runny nose, and a feeling that you get when you haven't slept for days and it's catching up to you (though i've slept fine that day). I haven't experienced any headaches or fevers or joint pains yet, but i have experienced some muscles shaking on their own, and for the past couple of days i have not been able to get more than 4 hours of sleep at a time. I'm not really sure what to expect from this, but from what i've been reading implies that this rash should have grown a bit bigger than what it currently is (though it did grow by about 2 millimeters).

While i've known about this command-line tool, i normally use Xfburn or Brasero when i don't want to install K3B (due to its KDE dependency). The only thing i don't like about Brasero, though, is how it integrates with Nautilus. I would prefer it if it ran in its own, separate application window—though, surprisingly, Nautilus has its own CD burner extension; attempting to install it through the repository requires the removal of Brasero.

Lyme Disease is generally an infection that is passed on by ticks. General information states that only certain kinds of ticks can pass on this disease; however, in practice it may actually be any kind of tick, regardless of the age and gender of the tick. While normally spread through ticks, there are other ways of contracting the disease. Due to the nature of the borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, digging its way into most parts of the system, pregnant women have the potential of passing on the disease onto their children. However, it is possible to prevent transfer of the disease from mother to child with proper treatment. So far i have not heard of any other observed methods of transfer, though some speculate other insects or sexual intercourse. [update: there is information that says that the disease can be transmitted through breast milk—apparently contradicting that mothers who are treated for the disease won't pass it on to their child (but i will leave the other information in place, as it can be a case-by-case thing, which other information seem to verify).] First signs of Lyme disease tend to involve a rash—practically any rash on the site of the tick bite. This rash can be in many shapes and in many sizes, but generally giving the appearance similar to that of a dart board's bull's-eye. However, this often takes several days to show as the rash slowly increases in size—which may appear like it will never stop increasing, but should eventually go away. In cases where no such mark exists, proper diagnosis of the actual source of the later-occurring problems—to which there are many, which increase over time—may be prolonged, sometimes taking years to figure out that they were caused by having contracted Lyme disease. Unfortunately, many doctors may pass off the symptoms as something else and may choose to deny any possibility of it being related to Lyme disease. Some state that many tests that attempt to detect the presence of Lyme disease are inaccurate and may return negative for people who are infected with Lyme disease. [Note: there is a similar tick-born disease known as STARI which bears similar symptoms to that of the early signs of Lyme disease. Differences may include the rash being smaller in its maximum size than the one caused by Lyme Disease and perhaps lesser complications over-all. Differences should be noted before forming a conclusion.] It should be noted that how long a tick is required to have been feeding off of you in order to contract the disease is mostly irrelevant. Some state that the tick requires at least 12 hours of feeding on the spot to transfer the disease, others say at least 24 hours or more; or that it is only transferred when the tick is done feasting. However, the disease can be transferred at any time through the course of its meal. Normally, the area of the rash becomes numb and therefore lacking a sense of touch or feeling. Interestingly enough, brushing over the area with, say, your finger may cause the area or surrounding area of the rash to itch; otherwise, it may not itch at all. I am uncertain if there is any proper way of removing the tick after puncturing your skin, but there is information for and against using tweezers to crush the head or neck of the tick. After removal, though, it is recommended to wash the area with soap and water—though i have no idea if this will actually help in avoiding contracting Lyme disease, which i doubt it would. Some people may experience symptoms early, normally days after the bite; some may experience symptoms years later—which can be the reason of not remembering if a tick has ever bit them in the first place. Such early symptoms, beside the rash, tend to be flu-like. Over the course of time the symptoms can get worse, even life-threatening. The bacteria itself causes an auto-immune response by the body, causing the body to attack itself, making it difficult to put an end to the disease. It is said that if the disease is caught in its early stages, that removal of the disease will take a short time. However, i cannot say that the disease won't still be present but rather that it is asymptomatic. Though for chronic cases it may seem like forever when battling this disease, many have reported that they have been "cured," showing none of the symptoms which they were burdened with, even if it was one heck of a battle. Therefore there is hope for those with Lyme disease. Many doctors are not competent enough in Lyme disease to properly handle such cases. However, those who believe that they have Lyme disease should look for Lyme Literate Medical Doctors (LLMD) in their area, or, if necessary, out of their state. These doctors specialize in Lyme disease and are more suitable in having you get the help you need. It is recommended to see one that follows the ILADS guidelines, not necessarily those who follow IDSA guidelines. Due to the fact that bacteria and viruses feed off of sugar and carbohydrates, you may be given a strict diet that excludes food that contain sugar and are high in carbohydrates. This is done in hopes of starving the disease. Antibiotics is normally the first line of defense prescribed by doctors. A popular brand is doxycycline of the tetracycline family. Like all antibiotics, they don't just kill the bad bacteria, they also kill the good bacteria in the system. This can lead to yeast infection in both male and female patients (aside from the other side effects of the antibiotic). In order to replenish the good bacteria patients can consume products that contain probiotics—obviously not right before taking the antibiotic; best time may be before going to sleep. Once the antibiotic starts working, the bacteria associated with Lyme disease starts releasing toxins into the system as it is dying. During this time, symptoms may worsen, but it is normally a sign that it is working against the bacteria. There are alternative methods to treating Lyme disease, but it is generally recommended, if you take this route, to use them along side the antibiotics. It appears that Lyme disease is present in every state in the United States except for Hawaii. However, there is talk that Lyme disease is under-reported, but it is most apparent for the north eastern part of the United States. It is not surprising that it would be under-reported given the fact that many doctors rely only on tests that return positive (ELISA reportedly being the worst or completely useless), while others even disregard those very same tests, denying contamination of Lyme disease. I hear insurance companies only provide short-term support for patients with Lyme disease since they don't see Lyme disease as an epidemic or as something that could last the person several years or their entire lifetime. While i have not verified all information provided herein, i can tell you that most of it has been verified and found to be true. The information provided here has been provided in the hope that it will be useful. If you are wondering why did i pick this subject, i picked it because i have recently been bitten by a tick and am showing symptoms of the early stages. Therefore i am researching as much as i can on Lyme disease. I've never been bitten by a tick before, and the first one that did bite me just so happened to be carrying a disease. It amazes me slightly that these ticks do not die as quick as you would expect them to (or would want them to ) though bearing such bacteria. It is also interesting to read that the saliva of the tick (yuck), just like lice, apparently, prevents the hole the tick made in your skin from closing and from the blood hardening. If it weren't for its saliva, no one would probably obtain the disease—but this i am uncertain of. Since i believe i carry the disease now, any information that has not been verified, i feel, will be verified through experience. Hopefully, by the time any questions arise, i will be competent enough to respond to any queries concerning this disease. What Does It Mean To Be A Teenager?
truefusion replied to Ho-oh'sRealm's topic in General Discussion
If that's treating teens in all the wrong ways, then i'd hate to think what the good ways involve. What is this "equal-footing" you say adults have? Do you mean the kind of benefits obtained by following the aforementioned "wrong ways"? If teens are treated in these "wrong ways," then it follows that these "special" adults went through the same thing as a teen, therefore implying that they've learned their lesson, hence treated better than teens. You say teens are like children, not wanting to take responsibility. If you act like a child, i would not be surprised if you are treated like one, regardless of your age. But what is this equal-footing you speak of? -
So i've opened an artist account with Jamendo, under the artist name Raking Leaves. Currently i only have one "album," "Amateur." I don't really consider it an album, and would have preferred to have uploaded each song separately, but Jamendo only allows uploading "albums." The songs on Amateur are a bit old, most of them nearing 2 years, and i've never really took the time to master them—and never will, since i don't have the project files for them. That is the reason why the album is called "Amateur," because it could be better. I'll eventually upload other "albums" containing newer, better work, but most of my current music projects are not finished yet. Anyway, enjoy, and if willing, let me know if my current "album" is enough to interest you in more work.

Karmic Koala Upgrade And Some Linux Questions
truefusion replied to Baniboy's topic in Operating Systems
What partitioner? The one that comes with Ubiquity? Or did you download GParted and used that? If the latter, then that would be the problem. GParted may be able to mount and unmount partitions, but it doesn't save anything to /etc/fstab. You can download a program called "MountManager;" it'll save the changes to /etc/fstab. If the former, then it shouldn't have done that. I have a folder called "sources" filled with source code. I like to live on the "bleeding edge." Ubuntu having the program in the repository just means that it therefore becomes easy for me to compile programs, because i can have APT install all the dependencies for the program with one simple command. I don't mind waiting for 6 months to see changes in very complicated programs, but some, the wait is unnecessary. That's one of the things i like about Gentoo: it's a rolling-release disto; it updates the repository whenever it can, not every six months. -
I used to not care what i eat. I used to eat and drink whatever tasted good to me, whenever i was hungry. I've learned my lesson from such foolish eating. Sugar isn't the only thing i'm amazed to find in a product on a shelf in a supermarket. If it is on a shelf in one of the aisle, unless advertised otherwise, then i would recommend against it. I refrain from foods that have high fructose corn syrup (which is a lot of food by the way!); i try to avoid foods that use MSG for sodium and not sea salt (normally the organic products use sea salt); and i try to avoid eating white products: like white bread, white rice, et cetera. I go with whole wheat or whole grain products, normally the ones that advertise 100% whole wheat/grain. Does this mean i do not enjoy my food or i don't eat things that taste good? No; in fact it is more enjoyable now. From my experience i have learned how to avoid deceiving advertisements, those that use special wordings to try and make it sound like their product has improved (as if you could improve food from its natural state—why would a product need improving if it was good to begin with?), using keywords and other things, normally from what you had previously heard on the news, to try and sway the viewers. It is no wonder why these foods are cheaper than their healthy(-ier) competition. And price is enough to sway many people. What does eating a lot of sugar do? Have you ever counted how many grams a day you eat in sugar? If so, have you ever grabbed a bag of sugar and poured out the amount of sugar you eat on average per day? I would not be surprised if you filled over three 8-oz. cups worth of sugar. This is with the assumption that you know how to properly read the nutrition labels that come with every product you buy. Many people tend to assume that the information in the middle is for the entire container. However, you have to read how many servings per container in order to get an accurate amount. Too much sugar and you end up being more tired by the end of the day than what you used to be. Too much sugar and you might get numbed body parts. Too much sugar and you will find yourself gaining fatigue faster than what you normally had (if any)—guess what this may be the cause of: your body not responding to the amount of insulin it is pouring out (which is what happens for those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes). Sugar also deals with weight; eating a lot of sugar can cause you to gain weight, even to the point of obesity. So how can you maintain good sugar levels and without cutting back on sweet treats? Since when did we ever need to go any further than fruits for something sweet? You don't even need to eat fruits to get some sugar (i.e. glucose) into your blood (although sugar from fruits is called fructose). Try to always go for complex sugar products. Complex sugar is just a string of simple sugars. Most cheap products out there are merely simple-sugar products, so why go with the more complex ones since complex sugar is made up of simple sugars? Due to the fact that the body can only make use of sugar in its simplest form, this requires the body to convert the complex sugar into simple sugar. This takes the body a little bit longer to make use of the entire sugar, and it will continually convert the complex sugar until it runs out of it. In the mean time, the body will only make use of whatever it has turned into simple sugar, therefore complex sugars will provide you with longer lasting energy than simple sugar. When you eat simple sugars, it is already in its simplest form, therefore the body will make use of it almost immediately after entering your digestive system. Mind you, not all natural products ("natural" as what is normally understood as natural, not as defined by USDA or government food organizations) bear complex sugars. However, if they contain some fiber or fat, then that helps make it similar to complex sugar in the sense of how long it takes to put it to use. It should also be noted that not all natural products contain sugar levels as the products we normally see on store shelves. Indeed, if you are looking for something sweet, it is wiser to go for natural products over the convenient products. You might even find yourself feeling fuller than you would have with convenient products if you go with the better, natural products. In moderation means nothing if you eat nothing but junk. "In moderation" is really a phrase that is used loosely. It may really be more of an attempt to try and make something that isn't good for you appear like something that can be good for you, under certain conditions. While i don't necessarily mean to say that "in moderation" isn't something that people should keep in mind, if you're going to try and attempt "in moderation," you might as well just change your entire diet, right? Do i like sugar? Yes, but even i know what not to eat. Factory-made sugar is not better than natural sugar, and i'm willing to say it will never be.

Django is similar to Ruby on Rails but does its own thing. It is for designing websites, but not necessarily limited to content management. I had tried it out once, but i gave up on it. I guess i like "reinventing the wheel" when it comes to web development. Django is a good step forward to getting Python into web development, but it's not for me.

Karmic Koala Upgrade And Some Linux Questions
truefusion replied to Baniboy's topic in Operating Systems
After realizing that i had downloaded a pre-compiled version from off of their website, i went back to download the source. After compiling the source, i realized the command "make install" does not install system-wide and reflects the same structure as the pre-compiled archive. Therefore compiling is unnecessary, let alone going to third-party sources just to have the game. The sound does not sound bad at all on my machine—at least from what little gun shots, knife swinging and item pick-ups i did. So, yes, it could be a sound driver issue, or, perhaps, that your computer is slower than you thought (though the latter is less likely to be the case). [Desktop Entry]Name=AssaultCubeIcon=/full/path/to/AssaultCube/icon.icoExec=/full/path/to/AssaultCube/assaultcube.shCategories=GamesWorked for me—must have the pre-compiled version, available from their site. You might find it to be faster to just download the source code and compile it. -
How Many Of You Still Have Your Old Sub-domain?
truefusion replied to The Simpleton's topic in General Discussion
I've always had the same sub-domain and still have it now. The URL i've made the search engines (i.e. Google—the others are a bit slow) pick up is just a parked domain. You can access my website using both the sub-domain and the parked domain. If you call that still using my sub-domain, then i am still using my sub-domain. If you say that using my sub-domain is how i access my site, i use either domain to access it, though i tend to only visit my site to see if the update i applied is working as it is on my local server. -
Worst case scenario: when you are the passenger of a car who does a lot of these things. You might just end up kissing the floor when you finally get out of the car! Ever since i've started driving, other people's driving started scaring me. Doesn't matter if it is a family member or friend. Some even take forever to brake, and it's a no-wonder when you hear about their brakes not working as good as they used to, even though they got the brakes fixed about a month ago. Then there are those who have to pump a tank full of gas every 3 to 4 days. Not just bad drivers but are not resourceful and don't know how to take care of their stuff. Our signs emphasize "Do not enter." Does that tell you something? Worst case i've probably seen is those who are not on the turning lane jump in front of those who are on the turning lane, just to make a turn. Then there are those who get on the turning lane just to hold back everyone who wants to turn just so they can get back on the lane that they were on before they entered the turning lane. Lame! Most people i see at stop signs when it is their turn to stop tend to do that slow down (not stop), look and if it is clear, then go thing. It gets a bit scary when it is my turn to go. I haven't seen them play chicken, but i have seen people just pile up behind each other to the point where some are standing on the railroad tracks waiting for the light to turn green. Oh, my favorite, that is, when i'm in front of them and it's a single-lane road. No less than 15 miles an hour below the speed limit? Lovely. I think i hear them honking—eh, probably just the wind.

Actually, you don't need Apache or any other web server program to run PHP scripts—all you need is to have PHP installed. You would only need one if you want to use PHP for web development.

Karmic Koala Upgrade And Some Linux Questions
truefusion replied to Baniboy's topic in Operating Systems
They normally switch to it to increase support for it—not necessarily because it is something worth switching to (although, when it does have all the support it needs, then it may be something worth switching to). Just because they don't end in .sh, doesn't mean they are not shell scripts. It is not unheard of to have a shell script without an extension and then providing their file name for the "Exec" field in a desktop file. The system knows it is a shell script because of the first line that all properly-written shell scripts start with. Do note, though, that most shell scripts were meant to run through a terminal. When you compile and install Wine, if i'm not mistaken, Wine modifies the mimeinfo.cache file located at /usr/share/applications. File managers constantly look at this file because it allows them to generate right-click, "Open with ..." menus easily. Therefore when you come across an exe file, you'll be provided the choice to run it with Wine—if you don't want to do it through the terminal (i always do it through the terminal, though). Likewise, when Wine installs a Windows program that provides its own Windows shortcut, Wine generates a desktop file for that shortcut, which most application menus list in their Wine category. When Wine starts the Wine server (e.g. when trying to open a Windows exe), it opens up every other Wine binary executable in order to perform its task. When you close the Wine server, all those other programs close too. -
For me it depends on my agenda for the program/script and its functions. List everything you want it to have for a certain "milestone" (version) and see how close you are to reaching your goal. I don't know of any standards for version numbers, but i do know that some people use, i think, odd numbers for unstable and even numbers for stable, and that they define "minor" and "major" changes by the place of the decimal. For example, from 2.6 to 2.7 would be a major update, and from 2.5.3 to 2.5.4 would be minor. Bugs may still be present even within programs that are marked stable, but that during the QA test everything worked like they were supposed to.I've recently stopped marking my programs with version numbers and mostly just rely on its revision number marked by the version (revision) control system, like subversion. It gets tiresome updating the version number in your program/script. It is so much easier to just mark, for example, an archive with the revision number and just hand over the source code.

Deleting a default (i.e. uncustomized) Ubuntu installation will delete GRUB. The only thing it won't delete is whatever GRUB put into the MBR. This will result in an unbootable system, because "GRUB" can't find GRUB; i think the error number it spits out is 15 or 13 (can't really remember). In order to fully separate GRUB you have to provide a separate partition for the /boot directory. That way when you delete Ubuntu, you will still have GRUB lying around.

Karmic Koala Upgrade And Some Linux Questions
truefusion replied to Baniboy's topic in Operating Systems
Interestingly, it only happens to me every now and then, not always. However, this is how GRUB works: it doesn't install itself into the MBR, it just installs something which loads the GRUB installed somewhere on one of your partitions. I am not sure if it keeps track of which partition or if it tries to search for it on start-up, but GRUB 2, at least in Ubuntu, from what i can remember from GRUB 1, has a bit more files in /boot/grub than GRUB 1 did. You could, but i wouldn't recommend it, especially if the repository doesn't contain any older versions. I've always experienced some kind of lag when unminimizing, and sometimes when minimizing—but it doesn't bother me. I do not know of any alternative software (that integrates so well with GNOME) for visual effects, but what i would recommend instead is to download and install the Compiz configuration settings manager and just disable that window effect. I didn't like that either. Assuming you are compiling and installing GUI programs, there is a thing known as a "desktop file"—you'll find hundreds of them at /usr/share/application. That is one of the areas that GNOME looks for when updating its menus. Look at the ones already on your system and check out its structure and just mimic it. After creating your own desktop file, you can just drag and drop the desktop file into the GNOME applications menu, and it'll add it. Not all programs that are GUI programs bring their own desktop file. However, not all programs "allow" certain desktop environments to have it listed in their menus. That is, according to the standards for application menus, you can choose to inform the menu generator of the desktop environment to show itself in GNOME only, KDE only, or whatever desktop environment (you may see this when searching through the desktop files located at /usr/share/applications). -
Do some research on model view controller (MVC). Many, if not most, template systems run off of this principle. Much of the content that the template will contain when sent to the browser will always be the same no matter which template is used. Therefore the template system requires access to functions or keywords that retrieves data for to be inserted in their appropriate places.

It'd be easier to just give them a text field where they can just type out their birth year. But i would expect the PHP code to generate dozens of birth years to be similar to this: <?phpecho "<select>";for ($year = startingYear(); $year < currentYear(); $year++) echo "<option value=\"$year\">$year</option>";echo "</select>";?>If you want a certain age limit, then have currentYear() subtract the age you want from the current year.

Is There Any "developers Only" Browser? For website testing purposes
truefusion replied to greenpeace's topic in The Internet
The most you'll be able to make is a browser that uses the Gecko, Webkit and Trident engine, but you'll only be able to get Gecko and Webkit on other platforms. As for the Presto engine, i don't think it is publicly available, therefore you won't be able to mimic Opera. If i'm not mistaken, there is a Firefox extension out there that allows you to load the Trident engine within Firefox on Windows, but this extension will not work for other platforms. -
Y Compiler Make A Difference In Same Programming Languages
truefusion replied to onkarnath2001's topic in Programming
Normally, the compiler provides the header files with the low-level functions and other information. To my knowledge, there isn't really any standard as to how the internals of object files and libraries are to be laid out. You ever tried linking against libraries compiled with MSVC with a program compiled with GCC or MinGW? It won't work, because MSVC and GCC do things differently, even though the compilation and linking steps may be the same for both. No one said cross-platform applications would be easy to create, even though there is much effort in trying to make it possible.
