  1. There are many tutorials available all over the Internet, but two of the best sites are Pixel2Life and Tutorialized. You could also have a look around WikiBooks and see if there is anything there.
  2. Most LEDs need to go in series with a 300R resistor to stop them quite literally exploding, if you are running them from the 5v power supply. You can also get kits that will allow you to directly link up sets of lights into the various power outlets inside the PC. The other option, if you want to make it glow, is to buy components (normally fans) that have lights built into them, so there is no soldering or other electronic components, just like connecting a normal fan up.In some countries you can also buy 'light strings'. These are basically just glowing cables, that you can fix inside the PC case, but you have to be very careful. If one of these strings gets caught in a fan then it might start to rip it up, or the fan will stop and your computer could suffer damage.
  3. I'm not old enough to drive yet, but the family car is a Peugeot 307 Stationwagon . My dream car would either be the Maybach, or perhaps this. I like cars that are a bit different and stand out
  4. Teachers always complain that the students have bad planning, and leave things to the last minute. We have our GCSE exams going on at the moment, and we are still being set coursework projects and other stuff to finish, while trying to revise and also do other stuff to relax. Our teachers also seem to complain if we don't hand work in early! Since when was it required to hand stuff in before it's due in?
  5. If people want a blog, then they set them up on their hosting space. That way you have far more control over it and much more in the way of resources. As sad as it may be, some of the people who come here only post so that they can keep their hosting, which would leave the blog system being used by only a few people. If people want a free blog, without hosting it themselves then there are plenty of sites that do that, without putting a strain on the forum or costing anyone anything.
  6. Well, in the UK the majority of the population list their religion as Christianity on the Census, although most people don't live their lives in a religious way. This doesn't seem to make a massive difference in comparison to other countries where religion is a much stronger part of daily life for most people. When you said that people might say: We do have laws, so people would not go around killing people, or stealing or looting etc. any more than they do at the moment. If anything, religion, as you have said, starts more wars and causes more deaths than any religious law prevents. For example, it is very likely that the bombings in London would not have happened if it wasn't for religion. Worldwide, most religious people are fine but there are a few in each religion that just want to cause trouble and take their views to the utmost extremes. There is no problem with religions and their concepts, but the people who enact those concepts.
  7. The reciprocal link is just a link to a page on your site that has a link back to Trap 17 on it. You have to have this code somewhere on your site: <a href="http://forums.xisto.com/ Web Hosting</a>Then you set the reciprocal link to the page with that code on it. Brilliant site Opaque and hopefully we will end up with a list of most of the sites here at Trap 17. Do we know how long it takes Alexa to get the picture to appear?
  8. This looks quite interesting, as people often need to create a more personalised map of their local area, and this is easier than drawing it on a beermat! Unfortunately you have to use it with Virtual Earth, which is annoying because I use Google Earth.
  9. The other choice you have, rather than sourcing alternative software is to use something called Wine. This is a piece of software that mimics Windows and allows many Windows programs to run successfully on Unix and Linux. It is obviously totally free and works with a very large number of programs. Macromedia Flash might work. MX works fine, MX 2004 will not work and version 8 works on some systems depending on the setup. Unfortunately Photoshop CS will not work as a default installation, but there might be a work around. Again, Dreamweaver might work, depending on your version of Dreamweaver. Most games, including popular ones like Half Life, will run perfectly on Wine, although sometimes the fram rate can be a little low.
  10. That most advanced of image editors, MS Pain can also do this, if you don't want to download something. Paste in a screenshot, then click the eyedropper tool. Choose the pixel you want then click Colours > Edit Colours... Finally, click on Define Custom Colours >> and all the information you need will be displayed.
  11. My friend runs his own server using an old PC he had that he just upgraded a bit. It took us a while to get Apache and MySQL working, but PHP was pretty easy. So far I think it has been online for over 2 months with no problems and it seems to run pretty well. The only problem is that it's a quite old PC and it doesn't run particularly fast.
  12. The skin looks great, but I'd add the site name into the banner at the top. To get more visitors, try and get something unique on your forums, that you can only get from your site. Then more people will come, and you will get more people signing up.
  13. Most people consider the 4th dimension to be time or change, as this is another way to measure something. For example, a book could be 21cm wide, 30cm high, 6cm deep and 6 months old. 4 measurements, 4 dimensions. Some people then derive a theory that we can resize things along the x, y and z axis, so why not along time, so theories of time travel are then linked in.There are also theories of a 5th dimension, but this gets incredibly complicated and confusing, and there are still a lot of people that believe we couldn't get as far as a 5th dimension.
  14. Getting people to sign up to a site is always a difficult thing to do. Check your stats and see how many people are actually visiting the site, but not signing up. If you aren't getting many visitors then you need to get the site known, tell people what you do and most importantly, why should I go to your site, when there are others that do the same? What are the plus points, and what makes you stand out from the crowd? If people ask you questions, always reply and try and be more personal, use their name rather than Sir/Madam, and speak to them in a friedly way in emails. If you have the visitors, but they are not signing up, then they need an incentive to. This does not mean you set your entire forum so that it is only visible to registered members. Let them see the annoucements, general disucssion and set up a guest board. Then encourage people to sign up, so they get access to extra features that are actually useful to them and that they might need. For example, another site I use has a tutorials board on it, that you can only access after a certain number of posts and you have been at the forum for 2 weeks. The tutorials are written by expert users of the software and are very well written, so people are willing to sign up to get access to them. Adapt this theory to the services of your own site.
  15. I've seen this before, and it's something to do with the way that you brain actually remembers how to spell words. Somehow the brain can still make the right connections, just being presented with the correct letters, and having the starting and finishing letters also helps. You just have to be careful that you don't end up actually writing a word when you reorder the letters! My English teachers write like this all the time, and rely on the class to point out their spelling mistakes
  16. Google's help files state this: Even when you use the full formatting options, you don't have any HTML options or anything like that, so you can only send mail in plain text, but you can receive messages with inline images.
  17. I certainly think a Site Of The Month could work, and a lot of members would participate. Everyone here has something different on their site and it would get a lot of them well known in the forum. If other members, and of course the admins, like the idea then it would be great.
  18. At my school we have a filtering system because they say that people spend too much time accessing non-educational sites. They also block any site that is deemed inappropriate by someone sat in an office somewhere. So, when it came to my ICT coursework, creating a website on smoking, when searching for "smoking" we got every single site blocked.A little bit of now-not-so-common sense would go a long way to getting these filtering systems working properly.
  19. I think that we should be using solar power on small electronics, even if it's for personal convenience rather than saving the environment. Surely most people have had an important device die on them while they're in the middle of something and a solar charger would be a brilliant way to stop the batteries going flat.It seems odd that at my school, GCSE students are able to use solar panels to generate and store power, yet big name companies refuse to put them onto their products.
  20. Depending on what the file is there are various reasons why each method is good and bad. The main disadvantages of things like BitTorrent and peer-to-peer software is that most of the content now is illegal, but you can sometimes find something useful and legal, and more and more freeware is now being distributed in this way.I hate those sites like Rapidshare, as they are slow and just display too many adverts. Often the files are unavailable or just really slow, which is annoying if you are in a hurry or need a file importantly.Buying files and software means you have an instant legal copy, that you can reinstall if things go wrong, without a massive download.
  21. A barebones laptop is possible, but normally everything is specifically designed for that laptop. The actual housing of the laptop is normally styled and designed specifically for one model with certain features and it is therefore very difficult to put other components in it. As is the same with desktops, you need to make sure everything you get is compatable with everything else, but space is more of an issue and you need to get dimensions for everything. If you can, try and get hold of a few old laptops, even if they don't work, and just look at the components inside, how everything is arranged and think why it has been done like that. You might also see all the different designs and layouts they have. Yes, you can build your own laptop/notebook computer, but it will probably cost you a lot more and might not work first time.
  22. Simple robots like the robot dogs and things like that are very unlikely to do humans any harm, but no doubt that at some point a robot will end up being incredibly dangerous to people, whether that be unintentionally or intentionally. For example, there have been programs on TV that show robotic guns and military hardware. It would only be a matter of time before some of that hardware fell into the wrong hands and we could have a major Worldwide problem.Developing "intelligent" robots could also have bad side effects, especially if they learn as they go along. Intelligence can be a very dangerous thing and I'm sure that you would get people who would manage to either program their robots or make them learn bad things, but I don't think there would be any sort of uprising like the one in I, Robot.
  23. When buying anything major I tend to research the companies involved first to make sure that they are reliable and all of their customers have been happy. Personal service is something very important, and being able to ask questions both before and after the purchase. I often use a company called Novatech for all my techno stuff, and they are very reliable and have a personal service. If money isn't really an object, the I would go for something like this. I presume you're in the US and I'm not sure if it's available over there, but you might be able to have it shipped out. Alienware also do some brilliant notebooks, available worldwide, such as this one, which a friend of mine owns and is very happy with.
  24. I would happily participate in a banner exchange here at Trap 17. I have seen quite a few other sites that run ther own systems for members and they have worked quite well, so I am sure it could work here. You would probably need to add some code to prevent your own banner appearing on your own site, as that is pretty pointless, and it wouldn't be that hard to implement.
  25. I use Windows Media Player, simply for the library thing to keep all of my music organised. Occasionally it crashes, but it's normally OK and is nothing more than you expect from any other piece of Windows software. On my last PC I had Winamp for using Shoutcast and iTunes for Quicktime, but I very rarely used either of them for listening to music.
