  1. I agree - upgrade to phpBB3 to get the better CAPTCHA, which should help prevent spam accounts being registered. There is no real reason for you to stay with phpBB2 now, unless there is a modification you are using which hasn't been updated yet (which would lead me to believe it was abandoned). Upgrade and use the new security features to protect your forums.Use the username filters to ban certain words in usernames, which should also help stop spam accounts. Look at the common words being used in the spam account usernames and add those to the list of words not allowed in usernames. When they try to register they will just be presented with an error. Adding things like ".com" and ".net" are also quite effective, as it stops spammers advertising their websites in their usernames.Use the word filter to filter out the spam/pornographic words from posts, replacing them with something like *** or *BLEEP*. Also use it on any domains they put in their post, any website titles they use - anything key to their advertising/spamming. Spammers will soon abandon your site when they realise their advertising isn't having any effect. It's like removing the brand name from a newspaper advert - the advert becomes pointless. You can also look into using modifications to add more questions to the registration form. For example, there are modifications that add questions like "What is X + Y?" where X and Y are replaced with random numbers. Because this isn't a 'standard' part of the form, many spammers aren't ready for it, so move on to an easier target forum.
  2. I'm looking at buying a new desktop PC before I head off to University (46 days and counting ). I'm spending around Ł700 and hopefully building it myself (I find them to be much more reliable and high quality, plus it's fun ). So far, I've got the following spec: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ I'm aiming for a fairly quiet machine, so my main concern at the moment is the graphics card. According to reviews, that card can make quite a bit of noise. I've looked at fanless ones (mainly ASUS), but most are double-width (taking up 2 slots for one card) and the lack of dedicated cooling could cause the rest of the system to run hotter, and therefore cause the remaining fans to run faster. Any general recommendations? Any specific suggestions for a decent, quiet graphics card?
  3. Microsoft Works isn't free, but many OEMs tend to throw a free copy in with new PCs. The theory is that most people don't notice the difference between Works and Office until after they buy the PC, then go back to the retailer to buy Office. I think it might be able to read Office documents, and maybe save in them (I'm not sure - it's years since I used it) but they are not the native Works format (Microsoft gave Works its own weird collection of file formats all of its own). Personally, I'll be sticking with OpenOffice.
  4. Yup It can get annoying though - if you drop it on a desk, it has a tendency to bounce a couple of times before you can grab it to use it! http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Storage/cat/USB-Flash-Drives/subcat/USB-2.0-Flash-Drives Slightly more expensive back when I bought it though.
  5. I had three, broke one, lost one, and am now left with only this one: A 4GB Corsair Flash Voyager. It's rubberised, and bounces if you drop/throw it It also has a cool blue LED, and will survive being run over by a car. I'm not going to run my flash drive over, but it's nice to know it would survive if I ever did!
  6. Assuming we are talking about production, road legal cars, the Bugatti Veyron is by far the most expensive, with a whopping ?800,000 - ?1,000,000 price tag. By comparison, Rolls Royce's most expensive car at the moment is the Phantom, at ?250,000.
  7. There are currently 21 James Bond films, with a 22nd in production, due for release on 31/10/2008.The first film was Dr. No, released in 1962, starring Sean Connery.
  8. Your ideal weight, according to the BMI scale, is between 55 and 72kg. However, the accuracy of that scale is not perfect, and if you are worried about your weight, you are much better off seeing your doctor.
  9. I am sure that if you explain to your University's IT department why you need the ports unblocked, and what you need them for, then they will unblock them. Of course, you will need a valid reason for them to unblock them. Also, many Universities frown on trying to circumvent their security measures.
  10. Actually, it has been reported that some Georgian athletes wish to withdraw from the games so that they can fight for their country. Whether they will be allowed to is another matter.
  11. Knowing your budget would be helpful, so we at least have a rough idea of what you can get for your money. Dell are selling desktop PCs for anything from Ł269 upwards. I presume, as you say you have everything else, that you already have a monitor. If so, is it a VGA or DVI connection (as you will need to make sure your new PC will be able to connect to the monitor)?
  12. Which is best to use depends on what you want your site to do. phpBB is a forum, allowing members to post topics and replies, in the same way as you are doing so now on Xisto. There are plenty of little extensions and modifications to phpBB to give it extra functionality, but it is primarily a forum software. phpNuke is a content management system (CMS). It allows news articles to be posted, pages to be written, galleries to be used and plenty of other, more general, features. If I remember correctly, you can also integrate a forum with it, and add that to your website. OpenSourceCMS has demo installations of hundreds of popular CMSs and forums for you to try out. Take a look and see what best fits your needs (phpBB and phpNuke are both on there).
  13. You can see how many credits you have by taking a look on the main forum index page: http://forums.xisto.com/ Alternatively, just click the text "> Free Web Hosting, No Ads" below the shoutbox on every page, and that will take you back to the same page. Your credits are shown in the large yellow box, just below the shoutbox (you might have to scroll to see it). There are also some visual tutorials here which show you how everything works.
  14. For a username change you will need to send a PM to OpaQue or BuffaloHELP and ask them to change it for you.If there are any particular posts you want hidden then please feel free to send me a PM and I'll see what I can do.

  16. I'm not sure who locked the topic, but I can guess why: The original post was made in April 2005, with a huge gap in posting before July 2008. Reviving old threads is generally not a good idea. Especially with links, information goes out of date quickly (the links stop working). Secondly, there is very little actual content - just a list of links. If links were provided with a short review or introduction to the game, then that would be better. http://forums.xisto.com/topic/20918-free-net-games-huge-lsit-of-free-net-games/
  17. The name servers in the previous post (even after correction) are still wrong Log in to your domain's control panel (with your registrar, whoever you purchased the domain with) and find the section where you can change the nameservers. Change them to: NS.COMPUTINGHOST.COM NS2.COMPUTINGHOST.COM Then log in to your Xisto cPanel ( http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ ) and click on the Parked Domains icon. Fill the information in and your new domain should work. If it doesn't work then try again in a few hours - as Kubi said, it can take up to 72 hours for changes to your domain to make it round the world.
  18. This is why the phrasing "up to" should be banned from advertising for ISPs: My connection is advertised as "up to 8MB". I know I'd never get that (I went with it for the unlimited download bandwidth) but many people don't know that, and assume they get the advertised speed. Edit: Seems I'm faster connecting to Germany...
  19. Most small paperback books fall into the Large Letter category, so are going to cost a maximum of around ?1.50 for First Class, or ?1.30 for Second Class in actual postage costs. Charge a flat rate of ?1.50 for paperbacks, which will cover pretty much all paperbacks (even thicker ones, as ?1.50 covers up to a 500g Packet (?1.63 Second Class)) and any extra costs are covered by smaller books costing less.Hardbacks, being larger and much heavier are going to be Packets, and most likely have to be send First Class (as Second Class only covers up to 1kg). ?3 will let you send a 1kg Packet First Class, ?5 up to 1.5kg and ?6.40 for 2kg.Personally, I would go with a flat rate of ?1.50 for paperbacks and ?3 for hardbacks for the time being, and see how it works out. You can always make the change gradual. Charge those 'default' prices if the dimensions and mass of the book aren't available. If they are available, then calculate the exact postage cost.
  20. No. Those files are server configuration files for PHP and Apache respectively. Changing them affects the whole server, so only the server admins can change them. I suggest you go to https://support.xisto.com/ and submit a support ticket describing your problem, along with a link to this forum topic, and they should fix it for you.
  21. Depending on how often it's crashing, I agree with the "install something every 30 minutes" approach. Completely format your hard drive, then make a clean install of Vista. Leave it for 30 minutes (or roughly however long it takes to freeze). If it freezes in that time then Vista doesn't like your hardware, and probably never will. If it doesn't freeze then install one driver at a time, and leave it for 30 minutes in between each one. Then install each application to see what they do. Finally, go through the updates, but do them one by one. I know it'll take ages, but if it works out what's causing it then it's worth it.You can also try opening Task Manager, and leaving it open on its own with the list of processes sorted by CPU usage.. When it freezes, look to see which application was at the top of the list, hogging all the CPU/RAM. Uninstall it and see if the crashes stop. If nothing appears to be using all the resources then it is more likely a hardware/driver issue.

    Computer Hang/lag

CoreTemp is the one I use on my Windows PC. It tells you the current temperature of the CPU, along with what the maximum safe temperature (as set by the manufacturer) is. It also logs the temperatures in a text file, so you can run games or an intensive application and see what effect it has on the temperature without having to stare at CoreTemp - just read the logs afterwards.

It could be a heat issue. Make sure all your fans are running, and clear all the dust out of the case. If you want, download a temperature monitor and check the CPU temperature isn't exceeding the recommended limit - many automatically throttle back (or turn the PC off) if they get too hot.
  25. Seems to be working fine for me - I get a default template with annoying automatic background music...Try refreshing the page, clearing your browser's cache and rebooting your router (if you have one). If that doesn't work then you'll just need to wait for the domain iformation to work its way around to your ISP's DNS servers.
