  1. They really did that? Wow! I personally feel that those organizations which are more concerned about animals than people, are for those who don't really know the world they live in. And these NGOs tend to be joined by upper class people, silly young girls who want to do something to make the world a better place to live and put their energies in this kind of things that don't question the political or economical statu quo at all. I mean, I don't like hurting animals and all that but come on! Let me give you an example that's really exasperating. In my country, Uruguay, some people still use horses for garbage collection. This isn't a State policy, but the local government of the capital city (where I live) lets some people, really poor people, check dumpsters on the street and take what they think they could sell (metal, plastic, wood, cardboard) or in the worst cases, what they can eat (the food people throws). This is the reality. The thing is that some people make their living of what they can find in other people's garbage, and they usually carry what they collect in a cart drawn by a horse (like in this pic). So what do you think environment and animal rights organizations complain about? If if thought that they complain about the poor health conditions of those who do this, you were wrong. If you thought they complain about children being involved in these activities, you were wrong too. They care about how these recyclers treat their horses. Yes, they care more about the animals than the 5 year old children who sometimes go with their parents getting inside the dumpsters. Believe it or not.
  2. Your request has been more than a month here, so maybe I'm a bit late, but I can help you for free, however I would need more details. For example, how is what you want your posts to look like (each single post), how do you want the posts page to look (the one which shows the last posts, or the featured ones... usually the homepage). You can use WordPress as a simple CMS, with more advanced functions than a blog. What is more, I could help you with designing a theme, but maybe you can use one of one of some already made themes which let you configure almost anything you want from the admin panel, which should be faster. For example, Atahualpa or Suffusion. Anyway, reply or drop me a line by PM if you still need help, I'll be more often here on KS from now on.
  3. I don't like Apple devices, and I don't own one. In fact, the only thing I've ever liked from Apple was their operative system, Mac OS X (which by the way, got a new update these days). I've seen it installed in computers and it works charmingly. But for cellphones and music players, I prefer good ole Nokia... and considering recent improvements in those devices, if I had to choose one of those trendy, touchscreen smartphones, I'd buy one with Android, which is open source. But I'm not crazy about them. So I can't understand how people may become fans of a company! I really don't. However, besides their marketing techniques don't work on me, I can't say that the way they conduct business is terrible. Check what the Economist's figures say: That is just regarding the iPhone. I don't know their profits in computers but iTunes is the business of the century. That's why I think that they know what business is about, no matter if I like their designing styles or not.
  4. Sorry if I arrive a couple of days late... but I have another suggestion too. If you already tried the solution presented by shadowx, which is very good, I hope you had luck. If you hadn't yet, you may also try with GParted. GParted is "the Gnome Partition Editor", which allows you to graphically manage your disks partitions. You can boot it from a CD or USB key like any live distro to manipulate your partitions in emergency cases like this. I used it once, although it wasn't to fix a partition table, just for installing Windows after having installed Debian. Anyway, you can use GParted to "attempt data rescue from lost partitions", at least their website says. I must admit that it's not a feature of this application that I've ever used, but you can try, I don't think you may lose anything. You can check their help manual, here's the link to the section for data rescuing. Good luck in any case!
  5. You're right! Catch me if you can, The Aviator, this one... Anyway, you should let these movies move you so drammatically...

I've read a few posts of the things that xisto has been recently doing wrong, like sh*tty support... what's going on?

and the site is full of spam, especially the blogs I think. there must be some honest post in that section, but I haven't found one yet, all the blog posts I've checked were written by users who didn't have ONE post in the forums...

exactly... we don't need the blog section. It's not like opaque listens to any of his users anyway, though.

  7. Facebook's insistence on setting it as my homepage is pissing me off

  8. I googled it with scroogle.org which is some like an anonymous google so that my location (Uruguay) doesn't affect the results, and I got KS homepage first, your post second and third the forums portal, but onlinecheapo is #86!I guess it's pretty strange, but I must say that I don't see much effort from Xisto admins or Xisto to make the forums more visible. In fact, the site ranks #218 in Google for the keyword "free hosting", and it doesn't even appear in msn, Yahoo! or Ask first 200 results. It's not listed in the great site of Free-Webhosts.com, which is the site where I found about Xisto, but as such website doesn't exist anymore, they don't have it in their rankings. How is the site going to grow if nobody can find it?I think guys like you and some others who keep logging in every day and try to post, so that the forums don't fall in ostracism, you do a huge job. But many like me, from time to time, get bored. I try to come back and give my opinion when there's interesting debate but like I think that more people posting would give more dynamism to the site. What can we do? The admins don't seem to be here often, and I read the other day on another topic that it's getting harder and harder for moderators to block spam (I even reported some posts, which I hadn't in years). So back to the point... is there anything that we can do to promote the site?Sorry if I went awfully off-topic, but hey, if this post has to be edited, it's ok.
  9. I have Win 7 in my laptop and it works pretty smooth. It doesn't have those errors I get with my dad's computer running Vista and Aero is quite polished. I love the how buttons are ordered now on the taskbar as well as the new functionality of right-clicking on one of them and open a recent file or location... which I use mostly to open Firefox in the site I like, be it email or facebook. Also the gaming is pretty good and I managed to run some software that supposedly required a better graphic card than the Intel GMA HD that came bundled with my laptop. The only bad thing is that I still haven't found a good, secure software that could read Linux partitions, which I would like to have installed before I install Debian.
  10. I basically heard two opinions of Inception among my friends, one is that it has quite a complex meaning that it really makes you doubt about what is reality; and the other is that it has such a complex meaning that they couldn't understand it. Honestly, I saw it and I think it was not the big deal. This film is pretty eye-catching... ok, your eyes are glued to the screen most of the time and the effects ... well, the Academy Awards talk for themselves. But the message... mmm, I believe it's all part of the marketing that they began to roll and people bought it. The idea of the plot is original, I agree, but the fact that its position on solipsism (the idea that nothing exists outside our mind) isn't quite clear is what I don't like of the ending, particularly because it's a film that talks about solipsism and about the distinguishing the boundaries of what is real and what is not. Anyway, I'm not going to talk about that ending, because it's not a bad film after all, though not a comedy one to pass the time either.
  11. This is my desktop -- been a long time since I last posted in the forums and I wanted to start with the new laptop I got a couple months ago.
  12. And then they say doing sports is healthy! Nah, bad joke. But it's really strange, isn't it? I mean, did it really happen? It sounds too odd to be true. How can a golf ball make a spark?

  14. My father's laptop has the same problem. It has Windows Vista installed and the battery icon says "plugged in, not charging" (actually it says "conectado, sin cargar" because it's in Spanish...)I tried uninstalling and reinstalling ACPI driver, as Iniyila suggested, but it didn't work. I had read that recommendation somewhere else so I tried. It seems to fix the problem for lots of people but it wasn't my case.I also read in other sites that I should upgrade the BIOS, but I've also heard that doing that is highly risky, so I didn't try... The problem is that if I want to buy a new battery it costs like 190 dollars here in Uruguay, because it has to be imported I don't know from where.I hope you could suggest me some other solution, because it's quite a lot to spend on a notebook that has little more than a year.

  16. Russia was at the beginning of the 20th century what we would call today a country from the Third World. Besides being a huge country, its production was mainly agricultural. That is because feudal relations of productions were the rule. As you may know, according to most historiographical theories (and this is one of those contributions that historical materialism made to history that only few try to deny), the four basic forms of production were tribal(where property of land was communal), ancient (marked by slavery), feudalism and capitalism. In his Preface of A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy (1859), Karl Marx says: For socialism to be possible, the production forces of capitalism should be taken to its limits. If a bourgeois class which only cares about speculation, maximum benefit and allied to the imperialist powers, is in power, this development of capitalism won't take place. That is why in countries which still have trace of feudalism (1900's Russia as much today's Latin America, Africa and parts of Asia) there still are tasks to be done about capitalism, and it is obviously much more feasible that they will be done by a coalition of the most progressive and revolutionary political forces (what is usually called as Liberation or Popular Front), than by a class subjugated to international capitalism. That is why NEP policies look so "capitalist" to be done by the communist revolutionary party, specially if Marxism Leninism is not studied. I hope this helps to the debate. I still owe you a larger post on the main topic, but I writing this as an advance because, after reading some of the other posts, it seemed as if capitalism and communism came out of the blue... like if it were only ideas, and not the natural progress of history.
  17. I've been using Grooveshark for a few months and it's pretty cool, and the only program I need is a browser. I have a flat rate DSL connection, so I don't care if I stream the same song no matter how many times, it's not more expensive. By now, the only two downsides of that site are:Sometimes, once in a while to be honest, the connection is slow from their servers, at least for me being a "basic" user. There are "VIP" users who get priority in the streams, but you have to pay, and I'm not into that Some artists have asked Grooveshark not to allow the users to upload their songs. So, if you look for "The Beatles", you won't find their songs that easily. The quick fix to this is to know that users have changed their songs info to have the artist info be "The beatles1" or things like that... I don't agree with that, but it's a fact.Hope this is useful for you
  18. Lots of people don't have a Facebook account because they fear of how the site uses their collected information. Even more people want their Facebook account deleted, because they found about these problems long after they started using the site, but having all your social information deleted is quite a tricky business and usually takes two weeks (link to tutorial). After many people and websites have expressed their concern about the lack of privacy that Facebook users have, the site has finally started testing an Instant Account Destruction system, Ubergizmo reports. According to Facebook's clarification to Gizmodo (which has spread the news): So, if you've been looking forward to say "Hasta la vista, babe" to this social networking website, you will soon have your chance to do it at once... Even more, you might be one of those selected in that "very small fraction of a percent of users"; if so, you should be able to see the option to "Delete information" on your Account's deactivation page (link here, be careful), as seen on Ubergizmo screenshot. Personally, I still don't have that option available, so if I want to deactivate it, I can't skip the 14-days compulsory delay and yet, the information they have collected (including photos, messages, etc...) wouldn't be deleted! But as soon as this instant system passes the test stage, I'll probably delete my account and stuff, because there are lots of things that are simply wrong about the site, the privacy concerns people have don't come out of the air, there are lots of reasons to be wary on this subject (check url="http://gizmodo.com/5530178/top-ten-reasons-you-should-quit-facebook[/url]http://forums.xisto.com/ article which summarises them). So, what do you think? Do you want all the records Facebook has from you deleted? Source: Ubergizmo / Gizmodo.

  20. The looks are great... quite impressive really. But, it always come handy to know from which page it comes from and the size, don't you think? It would be much better if they added just a thin bar at the bottom, like a second status bar that are so popular these days (like Facebook's bottom bar but not that intrusive), only to show the file size, resolution and website...I don't know, I just wanted to share this idea, as I see every that Google search going bloated more and more, full of ajax stuff, news headlines, images inline, even Twitter updates on a topic! And I often just want to get to a site I'm searching for, but no, wait, I have to scroll down the page because of this new "features"! (I felt I had to leave the record that I complain when functionality because of design... now I'll stop whining.)
  21. There's obviously sense in what magnafrost says, but the thing is that I can't remember ANY dream... I think that besides the matter of probability, there's an issue of possibility. What I mean is that not only are few chances of remembering the end of the dream because, according to the regular cycles theory of oneirology (the scientific study of dreams), dreaming happens at stages, and it's pretty hard to coincide the moment in which you wake up with the ending of that stage... but also, because I don't think it is possible to remember all the dream, specially the last parts of it, even if that remote coincidence occurs. Did I make myself clear? It's quite a blurry topic to discuss, dreams, and I'm not talking here about those nightmares in which you suddenly fall into a hole, crash your car or some kind of shocking stuff which wakes you up in the middle of the night sweating. No. I refer to "normal" dreams, those of which you can remember some parts immediately after you wake up... and then, it's gone - unless you consciously gave it a thought. And I think that is the point: dreaming is an unconscious activity, which has several uses for our brain, including refreshing the synaptic activity, (meaning that we usually dream about things or people we already know). If we take Freud, he would tell you that those dreams are "wishes" and should be analysed as such. There's a whole theory behind it, so you could read him if you're interested. On the other hand, there's this theory of lucid dreaming which refers to those dreams in which the dreamer knows that is dreaming (sorry for being repetitive in this sentence)... and they have methods to induce to it, which theoretically gives you the way to remember and shape your dreaming. Google for more info. Hope my opinion was helpful.

  23. Nah... this is just too crazy to be true. I guess Islamic Law says a woman may not be alone with a man to whom, as said above, she is not related to: husband, brothers, father, etc... This would be so as not promote concupiscence (as if that could be avoided ) So this thing of drinking woman's milk arises three things to me: As also mentioned above, why make loopholes to your own laws??? If social contradictions are too tight, it's not this kind of thing what will solve the situation. That's for sure. Anyway, imagine this is true and actually practised. How do you do it? I mean, if you seduce a girl and take her to a hotel, if someone looks at her strange, like saying "such a impious woman!", you go and suckle from her breast to make them think you're "related"??? Come on! Finally, even if you do so... correct me if I'm wrong, but last time I checked the book, most women's breasts won't have milk unless they are pregnant. I don't know, this piece of news sounds too hilarious to be true.
  24. A few days ago I stumbled upon this app. It's called Connectify and lets you "Turn your Windows 7 laptop into a Wi-Fi hotspot to share the Internet with" ... "any number of Wi-Fi enabled devices to your network including laptops, phones, gaming systems"... It seems like what you were looking for. The only thing is that it seems to require Windows 7, I don't know if you have it. I don't, so I couldn't test it, I can neither recommend it nor disapprove it. http://www.connectify.me/ Good luck
  25. It's a good yet basic method: if you have to decode the loop or some code that is dynamically generated (e.g. a list of the latest posts), the HTML output code won't work for you.Still, this is very valuable info. I remember I had once found a theme that I liked, installed it but it had that kind of too notorious footer notice about the theme author which really looked like an ad banner. And I tried to search in footer.php file of the theme and some other files how to remove it, but it called some kind of function to deliver the whole footer section, something like writefooter() . And as I couldn't find where it was defined, I finally gave up with that theme. It must have been encoded! Silly me...
