  1. razoredge is right .. May be one of your component just died .. However , Check your SMPS first . Happened to me once when My PC didn't turn on, No lights, Problem was SMPS. I believe may be one of your SMPS wires could be faulty. Try changing your SMPS (borrow it from a friend or something)You didn't specify and specs for your machine so I can't give you a wattage for your SMPS , Try 550 Watt or 600 Watt If that doesn't help.I'll suggest you clean up all the dust from your processor. That can also be a problem
  2. I couldn't understand your problem completely .. Supposedly your friend installed some prog that you thought were a key logger but it wasn't and it locked your machine ?or I presume he got hold of your password and changed it ? and Now you are locked out of your own machine :PHard-drive lock is completely different from key logger. It has no relation to key logging. I didn't understand the hard-drive rack part completely .. but I think you want to get back/ hack your own machine without the password and the OS is win 2k ?Is he using Linux on the same machine ? I mean was your machine a dual boot ?and Please clear your question so that I can comment further .. Oh .. btw.. Please attach a screenshot if you can where you are getting stuck ( password prompt screen)
  3. It happened with one of my old laptop that the internal cable that supplies power to the screen was somehow broken..And Every time i closed the lid the screen used to get turned offIt might be happening to you alsoJust check it out..Thanks
  4. I think Firefox is good enough .. you won't need another browser after this one
  5. I think Quad Core's are goodI am using Q6600 and so far haven't seen any issues as suchAnd Even the Gaming is great. Those who think Core-2 Duo's are better .. I don't think so.. It may be true for old games but not for the new games@tinoymalayil Its not 4 CPUs its 4 Cores on a single Chip
  6. what kind of 'small sound' is it producing ?It may be due to many reasons, one of the reason could be a vibration caused due to magnetism in some component like a spring. Or it could be due to some circuit going bad.Anyways.. I am assuming that you have a NORMAL CRT and Not an LCD.The back-up problem could be of the same reason and may be your monitor is taking more wattage than its suppose to take. May be the circuit has gone bad and its causing more voltage consumption.I think You should get your monitor fixed. Ask him to check for the 'Timing Circuit' firstHope this helps
  7. I think NetGear also has some good options for DSL Modem + Router. Check their website for details Otherwise , DLink is good enough.. You'll get that easily.DSL Modem built quality also has some effect on the quality of the connection (ping)
  8. you are not wrong with this .. Desktop with same specs would absolutely leech more power. Its not only the PSU thing its the different components altogether. A CPU in a desktop is completely different from a CPU in a Laptop because it needs to run on batteries it cannot drain 120 Watts :)Similarly the RAM modules are optimized and take less power ( I cannot comment upon the performance of RAMs in Laptops)the Graphics card , I think are almost similar but you don't find the same graphics card in Laptops as they are in Desktops (I am talking about the High End cards) , If you notice both NVidia and Radeons have different series for Laptops and Dekstops .Rest is almost same. Oh.. Has someone noticed this in a Laptop , the DVD writters are generally slow on the Write speed than on Read speed ?
  9. Your calculations are right but then processors are not always using that much power. or for that matter you can practically never run every device attached on its peak load (atleast I can't ) and so most of the unused devices are either in a low power state or shut off. Most of the laptops offer a power setting where all the unused devices are shut-off completely to give you more time. For Example My Vaio can efficiently give me 6-7 hrs if I am just reading/editing some documents. I can switch to a maximum power saving where it shuts-off my dvd-drive, my WLAN card, Ethernet card, bluetooth etc. and just lets me work on the document that I believe is loaded in main memory (HDD in low state). But then (I've not read your Laptop v/s Desktop ) most of the Desktop PCs are capable of the same thing. I can use the same features on my Desktop and save power . My motherboard is an ASUS P5Q (its suppose to have this EPU unit, I don't know if it actually works or not) and I have a 17" CRT ( Can't afford a TFT ) and I've seen that when I leave my system idle for some time like say 4-5 min , its shuts-off my monitor, turns off all the idle hard-disks ( I have three hard-disks) and even reduces the power for my Processor (Q6600) i.e. CPU using only 9-10 Watt in idle state.SO I guess both PC and Laptop can effectively use the same amount of power in Low state. BUT then You can never achieve the performance of a Desktop on a Laptop without spending at-least the double. If we don't consider the portability , Desktops are always better.
  10. Nice config, but I think You could have got an 8400 GS for a similar price. 8200 is an old card.Lightscribe has no real use. If you feel your system slowing down in a couple of months, upgrade your RAM to 4 GB since your graphics card would be sharing RAM memory. I guess it will take up atleast 256 MB of your precious RAM and At Max 512Also , If you feel your battery draining faster than you expect, upgrade the battery to a 9 Cell. That will improve. Its like 30 min per cell generally under normal load for Dell Laptops. I don't know about Compaq.
  11. Hard-boot is when you reboot using the restart switch. Most of the processes are running so data might get corrupt. Also if you were in the middle of some critical program you might corrupt your hard-disk.Soft-boot is like rebooting from start menu. You reboot through the command. Hence , all the programs are first shut-down and then the reboot is initiated.I hope you know what booting is
  12. @nirmaldaniel - I dont think it should/can be banned. AND you cannot say that everything on P2P is illegal just because you find some viruses or illegal material on it. And May be you should study the architecture itself before commenting on P2P. It was originally designed as an FILE SHARING kind of thing where the only difference was that users were able to connect and see what others are sharing.going by your definition, If you decide to share some of YOUR OWN copyright photos with some of your friends is Illegal ?and may be you should be banned from the internet with all your internet rights removed and may be some strict penalties ?since you were engaging in a P2P sharing act
  13. btw.. i think it would be a better option to wait and buy a USB harddisk
  14. @razoredge - The definition of efficiency would change according to your requirements. If you were to be a gamer , windows would prove a better platform because of the above said indirect communications through drivers but If you were using some secure service or may be encoding music , then I think the Linux will be better. Anyways. Microkernels are in a way most efficient but have lesser control over the hardware --- I think OSx uses Microkernel, I am not sure about this Monolithic kernels are like this huge core that every application needs to interact with if they are to use any of the hardware functions. They provide more control over the hardware but at the same time you can call them less efficient in some cases. Or may be they provide more of the security related features --- Linux uses this and Windows NT is a Hybrid kernel. Its somewhere between the two and Most efficient according to some people use this link for more information about kernels... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel_(computer_science)
  15. I'll suggest you re-look in task manager for some process using a 100% CPUIf you still don't find it , Try Daphne (google for it)also If you could post a Log from HijackThis it might be useful. I think its a hidden process may be a system process. Most of the Trojans do that. And since its a System Process chances are it would have prevented itself from getting scanned hence you didn't get any Virus report. You'll need to manually remove the suspicious file. That's allHope this helps
  16. Think you should look for SanDisk or cruzer micro They are awesomeAs far as quality is concerned transcend sucks
  17. First, You didn't mention the make of your writer or any other specifications about your system. It becomes hard to guess under these situations Second. Since your CD Burner didn't have any jumper , it doesn't mean its not going to work. It could be on a CS mode where it can automatically decide whether to be a master or a slave. If you put up a jumper on master and IF your HDD is also on MASTER. The system WILL go into conflict and Hang/shutdown immediately Happened to me once when I accidentally made three masters on my system. I am assuming you are having normal IDE cable for this. Since you mentioned that your system rebooted when you made your CD burner as master So the best way out of this is to make most of the drives as cable select where they'll automatically decide. Or Make One HDD as master and rest all on Cable select Anyways. This should Solve the problem for the jumper part. Now, Since your RAM also seems corrupt. Try putting in a different RAM from a friend and then test if its the RAM that's faulty or the RAM slot Hope this helps P.S. Noobs blame it on the virus. I believe they don't even know what a virus is . Don't forget to take those 20 bucks from Tramposch
  18. I think you can install it on a hard-disk since its originally meant for this only I can't help you with the instructions on how to install since I haven't tried installing it. In any case, It should be easy, I believe it will have a gui based install only. You can always try. It wont burn up your system
  19. I think you should go for Q6600. Since your motherboard can support a maximum of 1066 FSB and Q6600 has good options for overclocking and New games do take advantage of multiple cores. Also, since I am using a Q6600, I think you won't really need to overclock. Most of the games run fine without overclocking.I am also looking for a new graphics card. right now I have a XFX 8600 GT (512) but its not giving me that great performance. It works fine for most of the games though.I was considering Radeon 4870 or 4850. Try reading the reviews.Hope this helps.
  20. Thanks It works ! Thanks And it works both ways. If I don't turn on internet sharing, I can use my PDA to surf the net from my LAN and If I turn on the internet sharing, my PC uses my data connection (EDGE) on my phone Great. Took more time than I had imagined but finally it works and oh btw.. I don't do anything special to use my LAN from PDA. I think ActiveSync automatically does that . Found what I was looking for. Mods please close this thread.
  21. Its a nice config. You should go for a 1000 watt modular power supply may be an antec or coolermasterI don't know much about the motherboard but graphics card is quite powerfulas for the processors, i think it'll have its own advantages in coming years with applications taking advantage of the multiple coresbtw. If you are building a gaming machine. I'll suggest You choose any other decent processor (dual or quad or even an Extreme edition) with a card in SLi or Crossfire configurationSince you only require processor for processing related tasks in a game and 90 % contribution is that of the graphics card, I think this will prove a better config:D
  22. You'll need to code at hardware level. C can do this I guess. But then the effect won't be permanent since most of the bios would detect it and reset the clock to its original. So all and all it will be a waste of time to do it.Still if you want to try. There are specific functions in C that can write to and read from BIOS memory. But be careful while playing with this
  23. SDHC Cards can get corrupted only if you hotswap in the middle of a transaction. Otherwise it is safe to hotswap. Even, the corruption is a software one and not hardware level. Btw. Most of the hardware DOES NOT allow it to happen, that is why the card-slot is put behind the batteries. But if it is there as a separate slot then hotswap won't affect your data.I work with a Semi-professional camera and it does allow hotswap. Though I don't use a SDHC but it works fine.
  24. Try using Blender - Its free https://www.blender.org/ I think its one of the lightest 3d modelling software available. Even I tried 3D Max and found it to be complicated. But If you spend some time with it, you'll start to like it. Although I like 3DS Max but since its not free and I can't afford it, I'll suggest you try Blender. I even tried Maya but it needs a designing capable graphics card to work efficiently like quadro FX. And I think they were even giving away some free Student editions for their latest release but it was way to big over a GB for installation. btw.. out of all above Maya would produce some real professional results since it gives you more control over everything
