  1. Love the ghost recon sig. If I may ask, what font did you use for that?
  2. Only use the translator to translate a WORD that you can't remember, but have a vague idea of what it looks like. If you attempt to translate a one page essay, you'll end up getting screwed because words have different meanings, and the translator will probably not do a good job of conjugating verbs.
  3. Welcome to Xisto! As Albus said, once you have aquired enough posts, all of those features will be available to you...for free! All we ask is that you post to keep your credits below 0.
  4. Rap for me. Contrary to what jure.bait said, I don't think it's dull. If you listen to the lyrics, beat, and flow (how well the rhyming is), you'll see why. Most of the rap that you hear on MTV, I can't stand because the artist has no flow, the beat sucks, and nothing matches. You have to search pretty hard to find a good artist.
  5. Can't download. It says that the file was taken off due to inactivity. I guess that not a lot of people downloaded your pack.
  6. Wow! I can see that you're very good at these. After looking at a couple, it kinda makes me want to start downloading brushes and renders so that I can make them again.
  7. Why on earth would you use javascript for the rollover menu at the top?? What you're taking could easily be converted into CSS. Take a second to learn a bit of CSS, especially its rollovers: https://www.google.com/search?q=css%20rollovers I recommend the first two sites. Using CSS instead of extraneous markups will improve your rank in google because your page will be easier to read by the google spider. Also, convert your site from tables to CSS. To see sites that use CSS to achieve aesthetics, go here: http://www.cssmania.com/galleries/ Just look at the source code in any of those sites. You will see that they don't have one table tag in there. That's because tables should be used to display ONLY tabular data. How long has your site been online? It usually takes a couple of months for sites to be indexed AND have a pagerank in google. It's called the Google sandbox, and it's there to prevent spam sites from dominating google's searches. What's the best thing to do then? Be patient.
  8. Agreed. Make sure that you click on the ICON of public_html or the ICON of www after you click on File Manager in cpanel. Then, you will be able to upload your index page and your entire site.Good luck!
  9. 1000+ posts by the weekend? I seriously hope that was a typo for 100+ posts. It took me and some of the people who have a really high post count now to get 1000 posts at first. To get 1000 posts, you'll probably need to hang around this board for at least a month.Anyway, good luck and have fun!
  10. Graphic sites die out very easily. Believe me. I used to affiliate with a bunch of graphic sites, but after a couple of months, they all shut down, and my affiliates were reduced by half. I think that the only way for your site to survive is if you provide daily tutorials like good-tutorials or pixel2life. Start out by having a bunch of original tutorials (about 100 should suffice) so that you can impress your visitors. After that, develop a system in which people can submit their own tutorials to your site. Pretty soon, your site will become popular because people will keep coming back, and your existing visitors will tell others.Good luck!
  11. I used to have a dark layout, but like the previous person said, it gets boring, and everything kinda gets hard to read over time. Dark layout are sometimes considered cliche because all the new geocities/newbie sites use them. If you take a look at professional sites like google or yahoo, they all use light layouts.
  12. Hey guys, I'm making a new template because I decided that I needed a much simpler one that goes with the times. Template here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ As you can see, everything looks fine, but if the content area is smaller in length than the sidebar, then the layout screws up because the layout refuses to expand to encompass everything. Link: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Does anyone know what I can do so that the layout expands if necessary? I tried clearing the div, but that doesn't help. Thanks!
  13. Yes, http://nerdnirvana.org/ does have Chuck Norris facts. You can view a random one each time you go to a new page. It also has random facts and random pickup lines. By the way, did you know that Chuck Norris is the only 8th degree black belt (highest is 9th) in taekwondo in the western hemisphere? That's crazy! My teacher is only 7th.
  14. It looks like you're trying to create a 3d-ish effect on the banner and on the headers. Well, the headers look fine (except for alignment which I'll talk later), but you did a poor job on the banner--I could see where you dragged your elliptical marquee tool, and it bleeds over to the background of the banner (it looks like a bad tan). Instead, make a separate file and create the banner there. Then copy and paste it into the template.I see that you're using a pixel font on the headers. Pixel fonts have the word pixel in the name for a reason; they're meant to be used on points 8 or below, not the other way around. Stick to using normal fonts such as Arial or Verdana. Now, take a look at the content header and the content box below it. The content header looks like it's 1 pixel wider than the content box below it.
  15. I'm not fond of this template. The colors are not attractive becaue they're too dark. Try using something a bit brighter like light green or yellow. Those two colors will hook your visitors more than dark blue. The entire template seems to be a bit monochromatic. Vary your colors a bit. Don't just stick with one hue.I see that you're using pixel fonts for your navigation and title. Don't. Pixel fonts are meant to be used at 8 point font and nothing bigger than that. Stick with using normal fonts such as Verdana or Arial. Also, the design that you're using seems a bit old school (sometimes old school is not good). Try adding some gloss to the title, use rounded corners, and perhaps add drop shadows.
  16. Gallery is by far the best one I've used: http://galleryproject.org/ The installation is a breeze, too. Give that a try.
  17. Yep, updating regularly is also a plus, too. With forums, you don't really have to worry about this because you can rely on others to come back and "update the site" for you by posting. It also helps to have a strong foundation. When someone comes to your forums, you have to make a good first impression. That means make it so that your forums appear as if it is active. You can do this by getting some of your friends to sign up. You can even also make fake members on your forums (although I wouldn't do this). Once it looks like your forums are somewhat active, people will be more willing to sign up and participate.
  18. I've been wondering how this technique that I've seen in many forms is implemented, but I never bothered to research. Now I know! Thanks for posting.
  19. Google Adsense is a program from Google that allows publishers (webmasters, basically) to generate revenue from their site. It's very simple; you sign up; Google accepts you; you start making money. Joining the program is free, and you do not need your credit card number. You do, however, have to be 18 years or older. It's pretty much a waste of time joining the program if you're looking to make a few bucks on the side because Google sends you checks, so you have to report them as income which is taxable at the beginning of the year. The entire process is very complicated, and you're probably going to end up wasting more time and money than you intended. If your site does not get a lot of traffic (1000+ unique visitors a day), then I say that you should not join the program because you are probably not going to make enough to receive a check once a month, so Google will end up making money off of you rather than the other way around. Soon enough, you will get discourage, and you will take the ads off your site which equals a huge amount of wasted time and space.
  20. Google will not kick you out of their program if you are one of their big earners ($100+/day). Google will not kick you out of their program even if you go from making $10/day to $100/day. I know this for a fact because I was one of those people. I simply changed one thing about how I displayed my ads, and I started earning ridiculous amounts a day. As long as all your clicks are valid, Google will not terminate your account. That means that, yes, people can click on two or more ads from one page as long as it does not look suspicious. Keep in mind that I do not know for a fact how Google's Adsense system delivers and keeps track of ads; I'm only speculating. If a person clicks on two ads from one page, the two ads have to be related in some way, shape, or form. If they click on two ads that have completely opposite wordings, then Google will know that something suspicious is going on. If they click on two ads that say relatively the same thing, then Google will see that it's legit. And if Google ever decides to terminate your account, simply write back to them in a professional matter. That means check your grammar and spelling when you type, vary sentence structure, stretch out your vocabulary. Basically do all the things that your English teacher tells you. It also helps to provide logs whenever possible. Tell them that you're willing to do anything if they consider reinstating your account. Be nice, and you shall get your wish.It also helps to read their Terms of Service. You do have to be 18 years or older to be in the Adsense program. If Google finds out that your below their age limit, then they can cancel your account on those grounds, too.
  21. How do you get your site to be listed on search engines? You can submit your site URL to search engines, and hope that they will list your site when they refresh their search index. Xisto makes it very easy to submit your site to various search engines at once. Just log into your cpanel, and there should be an Search Engine Submit link. Simply fill out the form, and cpanel will take care of the rest. That's the easy way.Another way, which could be longer but is more effective, is to write something original. If a popular site sees your article, and they like it, then they will link to it. That will cause a lot of other people, including webmasters, to link to your site. The result is that Google will see that your site has good content, which search engines love, and it will list you instantaneously, and since a lot of popular sites will link to you, Google will assign you a very high PageRank. The rest snowballs from there. People will find your site through different search engines, and your site will get linked by more sites which will cause your PageRank to increase even more.Good luck!
  22. Why not just make a site where people don't have to sign up in order to do something? Put yourself into your visitors' shoes. Why should they sign up? Is there something in it for you? Think about it: do you normally sign up for a site when it offers you nothing original or nothing interesting? Why did you sign up for this site? You wanted free hosting. Put something in it for your visitors, and they will sign up and post on your forums. Try making a money system where your guests can post stuff and redeem it for things--tangible or not.In short, the two things you need are motives and originality. Have those, and your forums (and site) will go far.
