  1. If you want to host copyrighted content and not get bombarded by removal requests as rvalkass said, I would recommend buying a server and moving it to a country with no copyright laws like Sweden. Otherwise, you might have to deal with some nasty legal issues if your site gets popular.
  2. I can tell you that I was in the same situation when I started my site. There are many ways that you can do to relieve bandwidth. You can compress before the server sends it out so that you'll use less bandwidth. It's called mod deflate (https://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&safe=off&client=opera&rls=en&hs=cR6&q=mod+deflate&btnG=Search). I haven't been here in quite a while, so I don't remember what Xisto allows. If any admins know if this is allowed, please post here. If you're hosting pictures, I would suggest using Flickr because it's a lot better than imageshack in my opinion. If you want more unlimited picture hosting, sign up with Flickr's $25/year deal. It'll be worth it in the long run. If you have a large CSS file, you can compress it here: http://www.cssdrive.com/index.php/main/csscompressor/ You can do the same thing if you have a large Javascript file: http://fmarcia.info/jsmin/test.html Lastly, check out this Coding Horror blog post. It'll explain more in depth about how to reduce bandwidth. https://blog.codinghorror.com/reducing-your-websites-bandwidth-usage/ By the way, what was the name of your last host?
  3. When your account goes over the limit, you will get an "Account Suspended" message whenever you try to access any of your files. You will have to wait until the month is over to use your account again.
  4. I like the second one better. I think that the first one can be improved, though.Do you see the similarities between the second one and kenbacca.com? The colors on the left and on the right are similar. On the first one, you're using three different colors, and that just looks like the page is too complicated.
  5. You just need an idea that nobody has thought of before. Take http://milliondollarhomepage.com/ for instance. Did you ever think that you can see pixels $1 each? Alex did, and now he's a millionaire. Now a lot of people are trying to cash in on his scheme, but it's either not working or isn't working very well. Why? The idea's not unique anymore. Another site is http://digg.com/. It got a $2.8 million from venture capital groups and investors. What is digg exactly? It's a site where users control the action. Anyone can submit stories, and anyone can 'bury' stories. If enough people 'digg' a story, it gets to the front page where millions of people will see it. Another site I like is http://www.problogger.net/. Keep in mind that problogger is not the author's primary sites; he runs many others. I was first attracted to problogger because I heard that the webmaster earns $10,000 from advertisements. That's getting 6 figures for just writing stuff. His website is not exactly unique, but he does provide what everyone needs: help on increasing ad revenues.
  6. Why don't you just use Wordpress instead of trying to reinvent the wheel? Wordpress is a very popular blogging software and content management system. Don't believe me? Wordpress uses a very recognizable permalink URL. Check out this Google search: https://www.google.com/search?num=100&hs=Do%22&btnG=Search What exactly does the search query above mean? 13,000,000 posts from approximately 13,000,000 sites were made in May of this year! And that's only counting .com sites. Try replacing '.com' with '.org' or '.net' If you don't like a particular feature of Wordpress, you can always use the thousands of plugins out there. If you want to take it a step further, you can look at the source and play around with it.
  7. Those are some pretty hot screenshots. I have the Vista Transformation by "Windows X." I know it's not Vista, but I got it because my entire operating system looks so much better than Windows XP's default look. You can download the Vista Transformation Kit here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ I also can't wait for Vista. Microsoft keeps delaying and delaying it, so it better be worth the wait once it comes out. Another indication that Vista is close to coming out of beta is that computer companies are also making Vista-ready systems...which I am getting because their specifications are off the charts.
  8. The Alexa toolbar is a toolbar from http://www.alexa.com/. It's sort of like the Google toolbar in that it gives you the alexa rank of the site that you're on. It also has phishing tools to help you identify phishing sites. By using the alexa toolbar, you are letting alexa collect your surfing habits for its alexa ranking. You can check your alexa rank at http://www.alexa.com/. Just click the Traffic Rankings tab at the top. champ_rock, what exactly does this hack do? Download without the 700 MB limit?
  9. You can't touch the PHP installation unless you are on a dedicated server. Xisto only offers shared hosting. Are you sure that it's not your faulty script? Go to http://pastebin.com/ and paste your code there. Maybe someone here can help you out.
  10. Well, I'm not going to say, "ask someone out," but I will say something very similar.Start talking to someone. Try talking to a person of the opposite sex. It doesn't matter the age if you're just beginning. I recommend that you don't talk to someone your age when you're starting out since you'll be all nervous. Instead, talk to a little girl or an old woman. Have you noticed that when you talk to someone that cannot (and will not) be your girlfriend, stuff just comes out smoother? That's the kind of mindset you need to have when talking to someone your age. Just think to yourself that you have nothing to lose, and go from there. When you think like that, you don't seem as nervous to the girl, and girls dig (and can sense) confidence.
  11. The background of microsoft word looks like mac osx.All three applications look like windows vista. Now we know what they look like, I wonder how fast your computer needs to be in order to run this thing. Also, I wonder how fast the applications would run on your computer. Let's hope that it's not anything like yahoo! mail beta.
  12. Whoa! Awesome tutorial, Mikey!Kinda looks like she's melting away or something.
  13. Yep, Filezilla would do that to you. It's the best free open source ftp program, but it will overwrite your files if you double click on them. Before using any programs, make sure that you play with the settings first before actually using the program. If the program has an export settings feature, use it. It'll come in handy when you reinstall the program again.
  14. Shared hosting: cheaper and usually free. Quality depends on the server, how many sites are on the server, and how much resources is each site taking up on the server.Dedicated: More expensive (expect anywhere $99 for a low-end dedicated server).
  15. It'll be better if there were no text at the bottom, but that shouldn't matter too much. Thanks for the render
  16. Sonic is so sexy. Thanks for the render!
  17. What files are you trying to delete?
  18. Another tip is to use a liquid layout instead of a fixed layout. You'll never get that problem, and your site will still look good on a 20000 x 10000 (made up numbers, of course) resolution. Link: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  19. You can barely read what's on top of "PIPER".Try to vary your colors a bit, and if you can, try blending. Baby steps.
  20. Looks like a great site. You chose an excellent layout from oswd.org, by the way!Like Mich said, your site is very organized, and that's good because your number 1 priority in web design is that your visitors find what they need...fast.I'm not really interested in final fantasy, so I'll probably won't go back.Tip: If you want to make more money, put the google adsense banner on top. Studies show that most people don't mind advertisements as long as they're not annoying, so you won't have to worry about losing visitors.
  21. I wish I still had my IE6. Okay, I did what you said, Tyssen, and I played around with the settings. I got everything to look the same, in Firefox and in IE7, but I need to see what it looks like in IE6 before I release it. Sending a job to browsershots.org would take too long, so could one of you guys screenshot it for me again? Thanks! Edited layout: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  22. Thanks for the screenshots, Inspiron. Can you guys think of a way where I can get the search box to show up as it does in Firefox?
  23. I used to have my site's screenshot indexed at browsershots.org, but I don't anymore, so I can't see what's going on. Does it look like it does in Firefox? If not, can you send me a screenshot?
  24. My site at http://nerdnirvana.org/ has a search box in the top-right. The only problem is that it only shows up in Firefox (I think). I got someone else to look at it, and they suggested that I float the search box. I did, but that didn't help. The next day, I upgraded to IE 7, and the search box showed up, but I think that it still does not show up in Internet Explorer 6. Does anyone know what's wrong? Most of my visitors are on IE, and I need that search box so that they will find what they're looking for. Thanks!
  25. Excellent tutorial for anyone looking to master the basics of photoshop before making sigs. The good thing about these tutorials is that you can save them to your computer and view them offline.
