Just remember that if you have Flash navbars on your site, then the bots have nothing to work with, since Googlebot has nothing to work with, since it doesn't index Flash files. Keep that in mind when you make those Flash intro pages, and remember to add an HTML link in that page. I've seen decent success of sites with blogs.

Windows Meia Player 11 is so good that PC World gave a PCW Rating of something like 90 and had a full-page preview of the beta one month. For the meantime, version 10 is decent, and will suffice until I find a pressing need to install WMP11.

ZoneAlarm is pretty good (I use it on all of my computers, and relatives and friends computers, except my main desktop). It's bi-directional, meaning it wil block programs on your system from sending out dangerous data. It's resonably fast, and even the free version packs a whole bunch of features. The one thing that a newbie won't like is how many popup alerts it generates, but you will quickly understand what they mean.

According to "Teach Yourself Php with MySQL," PHP originally sttod for Personal Home Page Tools, but was later renamed to PHP Hypertext Preproccessor. And as everyone else mentioned, PHP is a powerful server-side scripting language. It's used for building many types of web applications including forums (like phpBB, SMF and IPB), content management systems (like Mambo/Joomla, PHP Nuke and others) and many more. I'll leave out the rest of my restatement of the obvious.

Windows XP Professional gives you way more control over your computer than XP Home Edition. You get Group Policy Editor, Internet Information Services (IIS for short), and a bunch of other stuff. Yes you can get all the fluff of XP Home in the same box, but if you want to get rid of most of it, you need Pro. BTW please don't start a whole discussion over this post.

Sign The The Trap17 Ban Petition  (its a joke)
michaelper22 replied to Saint_Michael's topic in General Discussion
Guess what: the're already on the list. Now we need people to sign the petition, and we need the powers at be to take a good hard look at the petition (namely Opaque, or maybe we should add him to the list!). -
Happy Birthday Jlhaslip! You old ^-~

Happy birthday to my second favorite evil mod! I wish you continued success in scaring little children (oops, I probably shouldn't say that). All the while, our favorite moderator hasn't replied to this topic! Hey jlhaslip, where are you?!?! -
Sign The The Trap17 Ban Petition  (its a joke)
michaelper22 replied to Saint_Michael's topic in General Discussion
Well, we do have more than 10,000 members here, but I'm thinking that about 98.9999999% percent of them either didn't stay here for more than 5 seconds after registering, or don't even know who the heck all of the troublemakers and evil mods are. -
Renaming Your Url's Can you use htaccess?
michaelper22 replied to squeaky's topic in Web Hosting Support
I know for sure that WordPress and Mambo and Joomla support SEF links, WordPress has it built right in and Mambo/Joomla have free extensions to do it. If you're CMS doesn't support somekind of real SEF links, you could do all the re-writing in your .htaccess files, but that would be tedious and just a waste of time. See if there's a SEF extension for JCM, and if there is, play around with it. -

There there pleno, it's ok, sorry I left you out. Now to make it all fair: Our good friend Plenoptic was convicted, of, uhh, I don't know what. But he did something - lol just kidding. -
Sign The The Trap17 Ban Petition  (its a joke)
michaelper22 replied to Saint_Michael's topic in General Discussion
Well, let's see: S_M hmself wants to get banned (not likely to happen considering he's a mod); AD, well I don't know what he's up to, although it's probably mischievious, and that michaelper22 - wait, he's not there! I should be banned for having the longest sig at one point. And who knows how many other things....Anyways S_M you're voted out by me. Sorry AD, you too. And jlhaslip too. -
Ipod Nano Earphone Jack Size anybody know the size?
michaelper22 replied to shadowx's topic in Software
You might be referring to the cell phone sized connectors, which are generally smaller than headphone connectors (not counting the MOTO Razr, Slvr, and other models' USB connectors). I don't know the exact ize, but they are in fact smaller and skinnier. -
I hate to revive an old topic, but if you are on dial up and don't want to see out long sigs, there is hope . 1. Go to My Controls (find this at the top of every page). 2. Click Board Settings in the left-hand menu. 3. By the line reading: Select the No option.4. Click Change My Account Settings to save this setting. I haven't tested this myself, but if I understand correctly, it will just leave out sigs, no placeholders, just no sigs at all.

I totally agree with keri-j on how IPB's search has a major weakness. But keep in mind that it does has one advantage over using the Google link: Google can take days or weeks to index the posts here, while th forum search feature will bring up anything, whether posted five seconds ago or five years ago (if Xisto was around that long ).

If I understand S_M correctly (which would mean that he wants to just plug in a person's MySpace name, and get their profile link), then you could do that, with th use of include() or require() to grab a page with a MySpace search or something. Keep in mind that I don't know the URL structure for MySpace, so don't quote me on anything I just said.

To remove the banner (if I understand you correctly), you should go to Components -> Banners, check the box in the column header, and click Unpublish, which will do exactly what it sounds like.Creating Mambo templates is not terribly hard if you know some PHP, and a good bit of HTML and CSS. Unfortunately I don't know of any good documentation off hand.

NetOp School is really powerful - you can do remote control stuff, give quizzes to studets, create policies to prevent certain programs from being launched (and other things), shut down computers remotely, lock screens (displaying a specified image or web page if you'd like), and tons of other stuff I don't even remember. I know all this since my computer teacher last year used it, and did all sorts of crazy yet useful stuff with it.And no I didn't copy/paste a single word in this post.

I like what you have done here Tsunami. Good work. Now if I wanted to change the nuber of points, then I would just have to play around with the line beginning "$credits = round(.....", correct? Like play around with the multipulcation or division?

If you build your web site in the open-source CMS Mambo, there is hope for getting rid of those ugly dynamic URLs. There are several components for both Mambo and Joomla that turn index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=223&Itemid=1 into /aboutus/our-history.html. Here issome useful info. -404 SEF (now ARTIO JoomSEF) automatically makes SEF links. It works with most parts of your site, but doesn't make SEF links for buttons (it does for links) in components. It lets you create somewhat custom URLs, meaning you can enter a URL and its non-SEF destination. -Other useful SEF components include ReMOSef, Joomla SEF Patch, and several others you can read about at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ -Joomla/Mambo include a very basic SEF system in the box (not literally in the box, but you get the idea lol) that turns the &s and =s in your URLs into /s and ,s. This still, however, does not provide much improvement over the real SEF components' abilities.

I saw the Antilost forum with the SpyHackerz message as well. One common problem security-wise is that members often leave files chmodded at 777 - allowing open-access to anyone with some skill (I'm not lucky enough to have that skill lol). Unless absolutely necessary, you should not leave files chmodded at that value, instead leave it at 644 (for non-excutable files, and PHP scripts that are called from another script using include() or require()), or 755 (for Perl, PHP and other script files, except as noted earlier). See my tutorial on file permissions at http://forums.xisto.com/topic/41614-nix-file-permissions-an-overview/ for a quick review. Regarding the cPanel issue, I get the same error while attemtping to access cpanel on my old (and still alive) free hosting account.

What I meant when I said SMF was Simple Machines Forum, an open-source forum system written in PHP/MySQL (like many others). As I mentioned, I'd like something just about invisible - the only indication it's there is some way for the user to check their credits. For now, all it would have to be is the algorithm to calculate credits (that is of course excluding any content within quote BBcode tags), and a simple implementation of the mod. I could write some interface stuff for it myself.
-
I'm guessing you'd like us to post our ideas in this topic, so here it goes:I'm looking for a credits script similar to the one here at Xisto. I want it to use some made-up algorithm (which can be relatively easily changed by the user), which will calculate the credit score based on the legnth and some other factor, like number of words or something. And I would like this to be written as an SMF mod (it's not terribly hard to make one). Thw hole idea is the same as the system here, where the only indication that the system is in place is the box on the home page. Thanks for bringing in this topic.

I did some research, and came up with these to findings: I got this from the PHP manual (http://us2.php.net/manual/en/reserved.variables.php).

I bought an iriver u10 and I am almost totally satisfied with it. The list of features is mind-boggling, and the color screen is sharp. The batterylasts more han 20 hours for music, and about 4.5 hours for video. The device itself is so small, about half the size of the video iPod. The few gripes I have about it are:-Video is difficult to convert with the recommended iriverter software-The voice recording is weird - the mic is very sensitive to bumps and taps to the player-The interface can be a bit slow, say between pressing a button and the screen going back on, or going from menu to menu.

Apple Ipod Vs. Microsft Mp3 Player
michaelper22 replied to brandon10092's topic in Science and Technology
The Zune series sounds interesting, but I would hold off on considering a purchase for now. It's like any evolving tehnology, in it's first stages of release it will be buggy and will cost more than the competition. And the built in WiFi will basically let you share songs, not download (to the best of my knowledge), and with restrictions at that. Let's wait and see what Microsoft has in store, maybe it's offerings later on will have even more.
