What Happens When A Hardware Interrupt Is Generated?
kdr_98 replied to jayron's topic in Hardware Workshop
Nice text. But only with the old ISA cards you have to setup the IRQ manualy by a dipswitch. These days everything is mananged by PnP.Only in a case of confict , you can setup the IRQ in Windows Manualy. Some IRQ are standard like IRQ 3,4 For serial ports and IRQ 7 for LPT ports. But even those are getting old dated. So in a 'modern' computer there is no need of setup an IRQ , You just plug in the 'new' card and hope it gets right detected by 'Plug and Play'. If not you can fix somethings manually, but a basic knowledge of your BIOS is required for that. -
The case temp is not that important. The most important is the CPU temp, because all power of the CPU is converted to heat.Very important these days is the air flow in the case. This can be changed by placing extra Coolers in the front or back of your case. The best is that the heat of the CPU is directly moved to outside and through the PSU.For overclocking (less then 10 or 15 %) you don't need water cooling, only for extreme overclocking. But is your CPU not to expensive for such things ?With extreme overclocking it happens that your CPU is damaged.

Normally after a bios upgrade you have to load bios settings with defaults.Because some things maybe added in the newer version. And they use bytes that were not in use in the previous version, so the setting can be anything.Another reason is that you might have setup something that wasn't right (like CPU speed). Then you have to clear the entire bios (like described here) because else the computer won't startup. So in normal use of a computer you don't need to clear the bios, this is only when your computer doen't boot due to incorrect settings od CPU (or memory) or a BIOS upgrade. But I thinks it's better to read the manual of your mainboard, because the procedure is not always the same.

Have you checked your computer for a spam filter, antivirus program ? Some spam filter block the mail client to receive/sent email directly everything has to go trough the program. If you have installed such program (or installed and removed) this program there must be something wrong there. A popular spam filer around here is K9 (http://keir.net/k9.html) maybe if you install this program your problems are solved also.

That's a know problem these days , the repair cost is gettings higher these days. The new equipment is getting cheaper. If you have problems with a 17" LCD, it's better to buy a new one because the 17" LCD screen are dumped for very low prices or you can buy a larger one.

Is your network card recognised by linux ?Did you try the command 'ifconfig'.Otherwise try a live CD like knoppix, there are almost no settings to get this working.

Mine gave a message when I tried to access the drive , that there was no media inserted. After 3 days google an reading a lot of forums , I found out that there seems to be a problem with apacer drives, they can get blocked. Mine was a Medion Drive but htis cure worked also. After the download of the program I have restored my USB flash drive.

According to mircosoft this fault can be a memory problem https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/291806 I noticed that you have a strange amount of memory there must be at least 2 pieces of RAM in your comp. - 1 with RAM of 512 MB (or 2 with 256 MB) - 1 with RAM of 128 MB. Now if the faulty one is in the first row you have problems booting up, if the faults is in the last row you have problems when you start the 2 nd or more application. There could also be a timing problem since the 128 MB will be older then the rest I think. The best thing you can do is running a memory test under linux. This can be run from CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) or floppy (http://www.memtest86.com/). The best you can do is let this test run for a few hour and look in with regio you have memory faults. The remove the faulty RAM , and run this test again. I think if you remove the 128 MB your problems will be solved. @masterleous : If you are looking for software of AIDA, they have changed their name to Everest (from lavalys). Since a few months there is no free version anymore but you can run the latetest version in trail mode. Or search for the last free version somewhere on the net.

If your laptop is 2 months old , you should stiil have warrenty on your hard drive. Bring this laptop to the local support and let them replace the drive. Replacing a hard drive in a laptop is not that easy since everything is close together. While in repair you could ask them to check the cooling as well.

You can check the following things. - Is Windows Messenger (part of Windows XP) still on your computer ? - Does your firewall allow you to connect to the other site, or accept an incoming request ? - Remote Assistance must be enabled on your computer (Control Pannel / System ). Could you check these thing on both computers ? An other option is use VNC (this can be downloaded free and is easy to connect). https://www.realvnc.com/products/vnc// You just need the other side IP adress to connect Install this program on both computers. One computer must be running the server, the other the client. The client tries to connect to the server by its IP adress. This can all be done while you are in contact with MSN Messenger.

His current card is has a AGP connection, so the newer cards with PCI-x will be useless for him. If the current card is good enough for him the best is placing an extra case cooler, that cools the entire case. This disadvantage of onboard cards is that they are using from the main memory on board, so only 1 device has acces to the memory , the main processor or the Video processor. So I think is better to place a cheap video card with 64Mb or 128Mb than using the onboard card.

Can't you mount the cooler (metal) on the graphical processor with some cooling silicone (like for the CPU fans). Without connecting the fan to any power. Then it makes no noise but cools a bit more since it has greater contact surface with the air. If you graphical card is sold without cooler, there is normal cases no need of a cooler. Also try to make the airflow in your case pass the Video card, by placing some extra case coolers. This cools down the videocard also, another option is water cooling but the price is still high.

Another option is booting from a live Linux CD.Most of the version can read (and write I hope) NTFS.It maybe protected in Windows , in linux is nothing protected , in linux the root account can delete everything. If you want to use this option watch out what you do !!!If your disk in FAT32 it will work with any version (distribution) , in NTFS you need one that can write on it.And your NTFS may not be protected in Windows or it won't work either.

Can you see the maps (VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS) on the DVD in explorer. If this works you DVD can be read by your drive. The second thing you have to do is install some software for playing DVD's. In Belgium the program 'DVD Playback' is provided with the Drive. Is this program installed on your PC ? But mostly I use WinDVD for playing DVD's (http://www.windvdpro.com/en/) here you can download a 14-day trial version, at least then you know your hardware works. There are some other (free) possiblities : You can play DVD's with Microsoft Media Player , but there are some extra codec's needed. Some other hints : - K-lite codec pack : a large list of codecs you can use to play sound and video http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm - With the program Sherlock you can check your codecs installed on your PC (also included in the full K-lite codec pack). About the speed , this is only a problem writing DVD's.

By google you can find this the old place for this key (used before windows 2000). https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/196480 However in de dutch section of tips and tricks you can find that there is a key with this function on antother place : My Computer -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion --> Uninstall (you can find this info also on the Microsoft site in Dutch )http://www.microsoft.com/nl-nl/sitemap.aspx?page=404&intent=/netherlands/ondertop5video2.aspx

Since your board is a P4 from asus you gor a socket 478 processor. With socket 478 I think there are no mainboards with a PCI-e slot. I can't find your mainboard on the asus site, so i'm not quite sure. Mainboards with a 775 socket from Asus starts with P5 ... Found your mainbord it's a mainboard made by Asus for HP. So I think your computer maybe a HP and it has only an AGP 8x slot , you can find the layout of your board here (comments are in Dutch) https://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_messages/1044537

I don't get the point of this post. Most of the ports you mentioned are outdated.Mainly there are 4 ports four outside connections :RS232 (also known as the old serial port) : Nearly no one uses that since the max speed is 115k.LPT (parralel port) : was used for printers in the old days has the disadvantage the cables must be short or you get some timing problems.USB : v1.1 or 2.0 ( the most used interface these days since its fast and easy to connect and available).Firewire : used for video cammera's , and some external hard drives or DVD drives.Theoritical is parrallel at lot faster then serial, but nearly nothing outside the computer is parrallel these days , since you have timing problems to get the data simultanious on the 8 lines espacialy over longer distances. So now everything get serial, also intern in the computer the IDE drives go to SATA (Serial ATA).

If you are choosing for AMD , take those with the new AM2 socket, The mainboards are a bit more expensive, the processor is a bit cheaper (in Belgium). But you have : - Support for dual channel memory. - Support for PCI-e video cards. So the older AMD sockets (939 and 754) are a bit outdated these days, or maybe you can get a good price. You have also the AMD Semptron processors, thay are also fast but have less cache memory. They can also be good depending what's the need of the games you want to play. For some games they certainly don't work.

ATA/100 and ATA/133 are (Parallel) ATA drives and are connected with a 40 (or 80) ribbon cable.SATA/150 (or Serial ATA) is connected with a small cable. On the newer SATA drives even the power connector is not the same anymore. So if you want to use SATA drives on older hardware you ned an extra controller. But mostlikely you don't get any more speed with it.Since the disks transfer most of the time no more then 100 Mbit.So there is almost no speed difference between a ATA/100 , ATA/133 or SATA/150.Unless you have a special drive with high speed heads. If you want a faster transfert with normal disks , you also connect them in a raid configuration. Here you can use Raid 0 (all data is splitted over 2 disks) or Raid 0 + 1.With Raid 0+1 you have only half of the capacity of both disks. (2 disks of 200GB results in a fast 200 GB drive) , with Raid 0+1 you have also a more secure drive , the data is tha same on both disks, so if 1 fails you can replace the disk without losing any data. For using RAID configuration you have to have a special mainboard or a RAID controller. For a new drive I buy a SATA drive (if the motherboard supports it).The price is almost the same and the cables are smaller and easier to connect.

Toshiba laptop AC Power Issue On a Toshiba Satellite A65-s1067
kdr_98 replied to illdevilinc's topic in Hardware Workshop
Can you measure the voltage of the battery with a voltage meter ?Then you can compare this value with the one printed on the bateryThe value should be about the same ( or higher) for a full battery.Or if you can replace the battery with a spare (from a friend or the store) and see if you have the same problem. On my work I had the same problem with a HP laptop.Computer didn't boot up with or without charger connected.Removed the battery and with the battery of my collegue and it was solved. -
When your drive is empty , you can also some tests with a program from the vendor. You can find most of those test programs on the ultimate boot disk. Here you also do a low level format on the drive. But watchout do this only on suspected drives , not on drives with important data on it. http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

With the Diskmanagement in Windows XP ypu can only remove partitions and create empty partitions. So your problem can't be solved with the (built-in) Diskmanagement of Windows XP.

If you run 'Windows Update' on your computer you normally get only updates validated by Microsoft.Watchout the second update works only on leagal versions of Windows XP.If you version has an illeagal key it will genarate a warning every time you boot up your computer. After a few days windows will stop working. This is a part of the protection Microsoft takes against illeagal windows versions.Normaly if this update is not on your computer , your computer won't download any new updates anymore.Since your version is not checked.Without the update you can't download 'Windows Defender' also (a free spyware program from Microsoft).Run also a good antivirus on your computer and some spyware checkers.

It could be the backlight of the LCD.Normally and LCD works with white lamps that are getting filtred with LCD Pannels. There are 3 LCD Pannels (red / green / blue)There is also a CPU in the monitor that checks some things.Maybe your problem is realted with the lamps are taking to much time to generate white light.Or a problem with the power supply of the monitor. Both can be checked by the vendor, or you buy a new one.

You can still refresh by pressing F5 or the 'Refresh' button on the taskbar. The only thing you can do is making the form empty after sending or just give a message that the iformation has been sent.Maybe then you have a problem with the 'Back' button. All depends on what you are using on your form :only html + javascript , html + perl or html + php.
