Why can't we do these steps to a computer uses NTFS file system? Windows '98 can not read a NTFS partion.is there something prevents that? see answer abovecan these steps done remotly? I don't beleive sowill it has the same effect? if you can figure out how to do it remotely possiblyif so could it be done from linux remotly to change another windows pc adminstartor password? there are otherways to remotely access a winXP system and change admin passwords.....hehehe

true but if you turn off the system restore and kill all of the restore points then turn it back on after cleaning the system then you can once again use the system restore feature as you wish...though I personally hate that feature of windows XP due to the fact that, as stated before, any virus or malware you have will be saved as well. Also there are some that will purposly hide in the windows restore points so that they can be reborn.

What Do You Need To Run Windows Vista
Logan Deathbringer replied to marretas's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Thanks for that, I'd heard that it was going to be native 64 bit but I was afraid that it was going to leave the 32 bit world behind. Thanks for the info, up till now I'd only seen 32 bit versions of Vista and was thinking that they were going to have a 32 bit version and a 64 bit version, kinda like they do with XP. -
This method requires the ability to use windows 98 as a "shell" from what I've read. The problem is that Win '98 can't "address" a NTFS drive or install onto it. If you have the need to get into a winxp pro/home install that uses a NTFS drive then you will have to use a different method if you don't have direct access to a valid account due to a forgott'n password or whatever. For that I would definetly suggest a copy of Winternal ERD Commander....hehe....if you can get a copy of it that is, and you can get the machine your trying to work on to boot from the CD-ROM drive.

What Do You Need To Run Windows Vista
Logan Deathbringer replied to marretas's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Ok here is what a friend of mine has said after actually using an "inhouse" copy of M$ Vista, unless you have 1.5 gigs of DDR2 400 or better, and running SATA with a Pentium D or AMD X2, don't even bother trying to run Vista, its to power hungry and requires to much overhead to run. Also you better have a video card with at least 128 megs of ram (an Nvidia 7300 or an ATI X1300 minimum). The one question I have, and have yet to get a straight answer to is, Is windows Vista a 64 bit system or is it 32 bit, or does it support both? -
that or switch over to Tren Micro Pc-Cillen, I run it now. I used to be a huge Norton promoter, but when I got my new job I got a "free" copy of Pc-Cillen and tested it out, gotta tell ya it scans a lot faster and uses a heck of a lot less overhead then Norton.Just my 2 cents.

Honestly, I don't think I can ever use that much storage in my lifetime... Unless I'm running a server or something.Seriously now, unless you never burn anything onto DVDs or CDs, there's no point in keeping everything on your HD after it's been outdated anyways.

Microsoft's Memo To It's Indian Staff - Hilarious
Logan Deathbringer replied to miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG's topic in Software
LOL, I do beleive that that came from MS since I have seen other "ridiculous" memos come out of microsoft before. Also I do have to beleive that such requests should be adherd to do to the fact that respect should be a mainstay of any business enviroment.Refering to ones customers or superiors as jackasses isn't proper, no matter how true the statement is. Just remember how would you like to call a help line and be cussed out, or as a suborninent to do a job and get cussed out. Now what you do on your own time is your business but when on company time, be curteous. There is plunty of time to swear and insult people off the clock, when your at work your being paid to do a job, you asked for the job, and there are "proper channels" to get rid of someone, yes they can be conveluted and full of red tape, but eventually you do get recognition for the work you do and those that can't...well they get moved to another position or fired.Well thats my 2 cents. The memo was real funny but at the same time I understand where the writer is coming from...although I am sure that there could have been a much better way for them to explain the point then to use the very language that they were trying to stop...lol...hipocrits. -
20 Years From Now... Where do you see humanity?
Logan Deathbringer replied to Kyle Perkins's topic in Science and Technology
My 20 year prediction: Religious persecution and warfare will have engulfed the middle east. A "Benelovant" country will try to keep the tyrants running said war in check, while they only really want to ensure the flow of oil out of the warring countries. Big Corporations will have even more power then they do now and pretty much do as they will, more so then they do now, with little to no regard for laws and the ecosystem. There will be even more of a gap between "those that have" and "those that have not" leading to mass rioting and the need for possibly a "police state" to run most of the "law enforcement" Finally, you will see the internet/would wide web becoming a "wet ware" type enviroment where people "jack-in" and no longer have to have a "hard terminal" to surf and interact with it, it will be a mental control with little hard typing. Ok some of that might happen, some will probably happen, and some well might just be a pipe dream; but those are my predictions and I think they might be accurate. -
Well here is what I think will work to do a mars terraformation. First off we will have to wait till we have a viable moonbase and space station. The reason for that is any ship big enough to make that trip with equipment (if robot based) or with equipment and human passangers. As for the enviromental part, the only way to really do a job like that would intale a planet base or a space station in orbit of the planet due to the amount of time it takes for a radio signal to travel from, then back to, mars. Another thing is the amount of time it takes to travel to, or from, the red planet. A single round trip is 1 year, if you just go and come back. Its a six month trip there. Now if a human crew was going to be sent they would have to commit to at least 2 years away from earth, from my speculation. That would allow them the time nessacary to travel there, work for a year, then come back. From my point of view that would probably mean they would have to be single. As for the technology to be able to survive on the red planet? Well I'm pretty sure we have it, we can build air-tight enclosures here on earth, we have already had many people build "biodomes" to show that the technology works and to show what polution has done, and can do, to ecosystems. We have, as a planet, had a space station that worked for many years. We have the technology, for the most part, I'm personally thinking that it is just that no one government wants to foot the bill for this great experiment, and no one company can either. For humanity to truely reach for the stars and leave our mother earth...it will have to be a truely global undertaking, and global commitment.

LOL to true about the benchmark point but I could give you a bench mark showing you that Windows XP runs best on an old 486 Cyrix based machine. The whole problem with this Skype/Intel/AMD issue is that Intel paid Skype to say that their product works best on Intel chips and then use the GetCPUID call to make the program work at 50% on an AMD chip. The problem with this is that there is no proof that the program works better on one chip vs the other just the fact that Intel paid for the option to have the program work better on their processor and then have the company make it sound like the intel chip is better....this is not only dirty but in some ways could be concidered as illegal due to it being false advertising. If AMD can prove that their was false advertising then they win, the problem with raising false advertising charges is that AMD has to prove that there was intent behind the advertising and that there is no proof of fact.

Reaver, For the most part you nailed every part of the conversation properly except on one point, and this is just my opinion but....this isn't really a case of cobranding but a case of, for lack of a better term, deflimation of character, and yes I know that is streching it a bit but... The problem here is that SKYPE and Intel are trying to sway public opinion and its knowledge base with a disinformation campaign. The false information being that the AMD X2 processor can't handle the 10 person confrence call that a Dual-Core Intel can (and please forgive my use of descriptive language here) but thats just bull. As stated in the second referenced article: So it basicly comes down to the fact that Intel and SKYPE are trying to sully the AMD name and since Intel can't bully companies like Gateway and Dell into only offering their chips in their computers anymore they have taken to mud slinging, which in certain cases is illegal, and AMD is pushing back. Will AMD actually have a leg to stand on in this case, probably not, can they let it go without a response...no.

Ok here is what I see happening in the market and why I think Intel is starting to "jump into bed" with comanies like Skype. As AMD is now able to get companies like Gateway, Dell, Emachine, HP, etc to put their processor into their machines without fear of reprisal from Intel their market share is going up almost exponitialy. With this influx of AMD chips in Box computers that can be bought at stores like Best Buy, Future Shop, Fry's (Big Box electronic stores) more of the general public is now getting to know AMD as a Major competitor on the CPU market with, IMHO, a better product Intel if feeling the heat. Now if we look at history and what Major companies do when they feel treatened by an "upstart" company, they make deals with other companies to dirty the name of their competetor with claims that their product doesn't work as well on it as their "partners" product/platform. Now when MS tried this with bundling software into their operating system they got away with it for a long time. The main problem here is that Intel can't "bundle" their CPU's for the most part.Intel is starting to flounder, they know it, so they are scrambling and trying to put egg on the face of AMD in the process, in my opinion AMD is well within their right to answer Intel and Skype's character assault. After all if you can crack the 'anti-AMD' code and run SKYPE at 10 clients on a AMD processer (XP 2600 and up) you'll find that it performes just fine....But alot of what I've stated here is just what I've seen, as well as my own opinions.

PC Fan Spins For One Second And Stops - No Bootup
Logan Deathbringer replied to WeaponX's topic in Hardware Workshop
I personally think its funny that there still hasn't been any change in the way motherboards operate. By that I mean that they haven't set them up to run the bios power off of the power supply unless power is lost then switch to the battery. I find it plain stupid, that with the level of tech we have these days we still don't power the bios off of a power supply so that if the battery dies we can still boot and get a warning on the screen rather then a totally dead system.Just my opinion is all, you'd be surprised how many computers I have come to me that I all I have to do is replace the bios battery and I charge 80 to 120 USD to replace a 3 USD battery .... -
PC Fan Spins For One Second And Stops - No Bootup
Logan Deathbringer replied to WeaponX's topic in Hardware Workshop
ok here is what I would do if the computer was sitting on my bench at work.1) pull out a power supply and see if I can get the thing to boot with a backup unit.2) if that didn't work I would then replace the Lithium Ion watch battery and see if the system will now boot, if this little bios battery is dead most computers will not boot.3) then if all else fails I will then start thinking the motherboard is dead and then order/replace it.hope this helps and if you need more help post again. Also let us know whats going on with a post or 2. -
Ok everyone, I looked around here on Xisto and found that this isn't a subject that seems to have been discussed at any real length, and it kinda surprised me. For one reason main reason, personal rights and open software development. Now I won't say that I know much about it yet but from what little I've read and researched on this subject I have found many places that say that if there is a bill passed in the USA: Well I'm looking forward to what others have to say about this. I would love to write more but I don't have the time right now and I would like to see what others know before I continue on my soap box rant...

Norton AV 2005 Better Than 2006 ?
Logan Deathbringer replied to dhanesh1405241511's topic in Software
ok I used to swear by norton but after having to do some serious "tweaking" to my system over the last few releases (2004-2006), I started to look for other antivirus programs out that I could use. I've used AVG, Panda, and a few others and have come back to one that I used years ago and thought was "crappy" but now find to be a very good one, Trend Micro Antivirus a.k.a PC-Cillen.It is an excellent Antivirus program that doesn't use alot of overhead, starts up fast, and scans your computer faster then almost any other I've tested. I'm hoping that as time goes on Trend Micro keeps the system resource overhead low and the program as good as it is now. -
Like with any operating system, the more people use it the more security flaws/holes will be found. Yes the MacOS is more secure then the Windows operating system but there are 2 main reasons for this that I can see:1) Windows is written to be used by the general public, and has always been written so all you really have to know to use is is basic typing and knowing how to turn the box on.2) Home users don't want to have to remember alot of passwords or have the kids come and say "mom I want this game installed" after a long day at the office.Believe it or not I have more computers come across my tech bench due to the fact that the parents don't want to have to install software for their kids and this leads to massive virus/worm/trojen/adware/malware infestations and they are willing to pay $80+ USD to have someone clean it out once every 6 months or so then to have security.Windows based computers are designed for people that either don't know or don't want to know how to properly work with computers in a secure way and then complain about it to make themselves feel better. I know this isn't a popular point of view but after years of cleaning up systems for fun and for a living I have come to this unpopular opinion.

LOL read that artical and found it quite amusing, thanks for posting it I needed a good laugh.Although I must ask, isn't it their job to research such things and keep track of the copy right laws and such. After all, if a government agency can't keep track of what is legal and what isn't, which is their job, how can the common everyday citizen keep track of such things?

we definetly need more info, mainly are you dialup or broadband. If your connecting through dialup, is your modem working (does windows recognize it and are the most up-to-date drivers installed) or if your using broadband is the network card (ethernet) installed and working properly, also if your using broadband are you connecting directly to your cable "modem" or are you connecting to the net through a router-modem combination?Like Jeigh said with some of those questions answered we will be able to help you out alot more but for starters check to see if windows firewall is active and if so, turn it off till you get other problems solved, if you can connect to the internet after turning off windows firewall thats your problem and you need to configure it.If your connecting through a wireless modem make sure that the wireless zero service is set to automatic.Hope to hear from you soon...

Just to let everyone that reformates when they get alot of spyware and viruses on their computer, don't be fooled into thinking that formatting will get rid of everything. There are a few Spyware programs out there that formatting will not get rid of. As an example SpyX, this insidious program actually writes to the CMOS and comes back after a format. Currently the only way that I know of to get rid of it is to use a program called Spysweeper. Also there are a couple of viruses out there that can do the same thing.

I Hate Cell Phones Being unavailable rules
Logan Deathbringer replied to Sarah81's topic in Science and Technology
I think cellphones are great.Aside from the little annoyances we get in the theaters from ppl who forget to set their phones to "silent", or people who constantly have their cellphones ringing in the middle of a conversation. It provides the much needed connection to each other. If you or your family has been out all day, howelse are you going to contact them? What about emergencies, it would be great to have someone to call for help one way or another. The only situation where I'll object to cell phones is when people use it like it's their fisher price toy-phone. Now that is annoying.Otherwise, cellphones are probably one of the handiest tools of our time. Most of them comes with a camera, camcorder, voice recorder, and whatever else you think of nowadays. What more can you expect from a little gadget that weights no more than a pound to provide so many options? -
Capital Punishment Please vote and reply
Logan Deathbringer replied to KonVicKt's topic in Science and Technology
I'm against captial punishment. If someone kills another individual, and in turn, you kill them for that, what good does it bring? Killing more won't bring anyone back, nor will it accomplish anything. Crime will linger on as it always had, and it will continue the fuel the circle of hate. Think about it, if someone kills your loved ones, you'll hate the person who did it. If you kill the person that killed, whoever loves him will hate you for it. So, do we expand this to the point where everyone must kill or be killed? Wars are senseless and meaning less. Look at the destruction and death that war brings, that is no different from captial punishment. This isn't a issue about being humanitarian, it's about human conscience. Do you really think the wars we have mean anything at all? Or is any war justifiable in any way? If you think you have the right to take away someone's life just because they have done the same, what seperates you from them? If it is true that prisons are the greatest place to live, then why don't you see the general public committing crimes left and right just to land themselves a cell to live in for the rest of their life? Think about it, Americans should know about this the best. What is one of the greatest assets we have in our country? Our freedom, and you are not going to get any of that in a prison. If you think the prison system is faulty, then have it reformed. But, killing a few murders won't reduce the costs. And, what about 2nd and 3rd degree murders? What about accidents? Do you really intend to kill every single person that has killed? For those of you who support capital punishment just to put a few extra cents in your pockets, you are worse than the scum that has committed murder. Why? Because aren't you just buying people lives in ur own socially acceptable way?
