Many websites do not even offer a shoutbox yet people can find ways to share links so I am sure that avoiding links in the shoutbox won't eliminate your ability to share your site with anyone. Even as a method of sharing its not great since it likely will only be there a short time regardless.

you can probably import the video into a video editor, mute that clips sound, and then just import the sound clip and make sure to match the timing up. Windows move Maker might even be able to do it (which ships with all windows xp and assumedly something equivalent on vista).

I agree with all that has been said. I mean in theory it shouldn't 'kill' a computer as its the same as turning it on and off 60 times over a long period of time. However it will add unnecessary wear and tear to the various mechanical components and others so it really seems pointless. Maybe if you shed some light on your intentions for asking people to do it, we could understand it a little better. But for now it seems like you're just trying to stir up trouble.

My parents home has the same issue with dialup speeds, and the things suggested thus far seem like the best bets. I know in another topic we have recently been reminded of the idea of using two phone lines with two modems/ISP accounts to in effect double dialup speeds. I haven't looked into this so am not sure about the logistics or how well it works but might be something worth googling if it wouldn't cost you more than you're willing to spend (regardless you're going to have to invest some money in this to boost speeds more then likely).

I've always enjoyed the idea of doing this. While it seemed pretty straight forward for dialup modems (I head two phone lines + two isp accounts (or one that you can log into twice heh) + two modems in one computer = 56k*2 speeds) as mentioned it'd be more complex for broadband plus the prices get pretty crazy pretty fast when you start introducing multiple broadband accounts, cards, and special routers into the mix. It's cool in theory but the execution has always, even with dialup, seemed like it may not be worth the effort.

Make sure to run some benchmarks of the performance too. It's a respectable increase in clock speeds but theres a possibility it won't show a boost in game or other graphical performance that makes it worthwhile to buy new fans or leave it overclocked or whatever. Just because a number is higher doesn't 'always' make it the best choice

If the cards software auto-detects changes to that equipment plugged into your computer, it might be something as simple as when you plug in the surround sound your base is muted or really low in the sound mixer settings. Might want to make sure its not something low level like that before looking for more complicated reasons.

Turns out I didn't install it haha. Do any of you know if it installs WGA on your system? I've had disagreements with it it in the past and would rather not deal with it getting onto my system again. The only reason I was concerned is that upon running the installer it tells me my system is missing updates and requires them to be downloaded but doesn't list them so I just canceled out and figured I'd wait for some confirmation one way or the other. I kind of wanted to try it out but not enough to have my system complain about WGA related things all the time haha.

Just curious, but is there a particular reason you don't want to use a cron job? Using php for maintenance without user interaction might be tricky since usually it only runs when a user is accessing the site. however if their is a significant reason that you dont want to or can't use a cron job then I can see why it'd be worth looking into.

try something like: $ck_reciever = mysql_query("SELECT username FROM user WHERE username = '".$to."'");$row = mysql_fetch_array($ck_reciever);if ($row[0] == null) { //error or no result returned } else { //do what you want with the result. $row[0] should be the returned id } When you use the mysql query it returns an item that you need to turn into useable data unless I'm completely off base. I haven't used php in awhile but I think thats sort of what you should look at doing

I'm going to install it and try it out just to see whats new. I don't even really use 7 ever except at my university since I use firefox almost exclusively but its worth keeping an eye on whats available from other companies heh. As a reminder, this is a Beta 1 though, I mean saying its 'not good' isn't that fair since its meant to be a test version, not a release version. Beta software almost always will have bugs and thats the whole point of it

It really is a great choice, and by far the best free open source option I have yet to see for graphic design options. I personally use the old standard, photoshop, as I have access to a copy but if you don't the gimp is an amazing substitute as people can create many comparable level design with the toolset provided without the overhead of the expensive software purchase. While I know the gimp is not for everyone as I know of a handful of people who simply do not like it for whatever reason (tools available, gui design, intuitiveness, etc) for the majority of users it is a great application that will serve them very well. I recommend it to anyone looking for an image editor without the coin to drop on photoshop (or that has it but isn't serious enough about image editing to do so).

I've never heard of aceHTML but I agree with firefox, the notepad++ application is more then enough for most html coding needs (among other languages) so I very rarely bother looking for other editors. I've seen a few really nice ones on linux, and some IDE's have some nice features above and beyond what text editors can do, but for basic text editors notepadd++ usually takes the cake for me (on widnows at least) for any scripting, coding, HTMLing, etc.

w3schools have amazing tutorials, as well htmlgoodies.com used to be a great resource... I haven't read much on the site in the past few years but they have sections for many things such as CSS so might be worth a look. Personally the biggest thing I find with css is simply to learn the differences between the different levels of style sheets and the different types of style definitions. Once you understanding the differences setting up div's and classes and everything just sort of falls into place

I was hoping for something crazy faster, but if they managed to squeeze an extra 4mb/s burning speed I really can't see it being that big of a deal lol. Sure it would shave a bit of time off a dvd burning session but personally I've never been that frustrated with burn times as it is so I really can't see me thinking getting an 18x burner would be that amazing of an investment lol. Seems weird to me they would even bother putting research effort and money into it for such a small gain

I too am a huge fan of black and white photography. Sometimes color is almost a necessity (a beautiful garden full of vibrant flowers, for example) but many times black and white adds a clarity and sense of respect to a photograph that I find very appealing. I'm sure a large portion of it is personal preference but at the same time certain technical aspects of either might be pretty much set in stone.

I'd say anarchy online. I haven't played it much but it was a retail game which has gone free so has good production values and whatnot which are often lacking in actual free games. Further it has a company backing it from its retail days hoping to make a few bucks off the expansions so again has some resources that MMO's often lack when put out for free (MMO's require so much to maintain I find alot of free ones are left hurting due to this). Personally I wasn't a huge fan of Anarchy online when I tried it BUT I'm not a huge MMO fan in general so it makes sense Worth trying out for sure. Plus over time you get offers from the company to download the expansions for free (I'm pretty sure I've ogtten offers for all or at least most since I registered my email with them) so if you DO like it and are patient you might be able to snag even more of the game without paying a cent.

I know it's been said by...uh...everyone else, but I feel the need to throw in my 2 cents and agreement. Google has one of my favorite layouts of any website to date. SO many websites feel the need to clutter their space with grotesque ads, useless features and information, promotions for sister sites, etc. As well, many other sites change their layout on a regular basis meaning that they realize the previous one was 'broken' and it also causes the user to refamiliarize themselves with the new and 'improved' layout. Basically if it isn't broken, don't fix it, and this is working perfectly for google so I see no reason to drastically change their layout past the minor tweaks they do now.As far as features go, google seems to release new products every time I blink so I think you just aren't paying attention on that one. Ever since gmail it seems every couple months there are new things like google docs, google calendar, etc. They aren't always huge things but remember, they are all free so quit whining

I don't have a zipped file of an example... because I don't feel like looking for one when you are capable of doing so But I mean you could assumedly use a database easily enough to save the username/score or username/password/score or whatever so that when a user logs into a system it has the score.Another possibility would be the use of a cookie if you don't care how long term it is. Just load a cookie with the users top score accomplished to date onto their system and check everyone for cookies upon visiting the site then pass that value to the flash thing.Note: I have ridiculously little flash experience so either or both may not be possible with it, but I can't see why not.

Gates hasn't had a huge hand in Microsoft for a good number of years now as far as I know. I'm pretty sure he had even planned to step down by... 2005? maybe? but changed his mind due to something or other. Regardless it's not a spur of the moment choice so I doubt microsoft will actually be affected much if at all. Companies that big are controlled by alot of people so losing a figurehead probably won't change too too much.As far as his charity is concerned, he's already given a significant amount of money to charities and has explained that he's not leaving his money all to his kids, but plans to give away a vast majority of his empire to charity efforts to do good now that he'll be stepping down. Thats not to say he won't leave his kids more money then I'll ever see, but you know, comparative to his true fortune he'll be giving much more to charitable causes. Personally I don't think someones views of Gates or Microsoft factor in at all, if he's giving billions of dollars to charities over the coarse of the rest of his life, I can't see how that could be a bad thing.

I'm also in the camp where buying one just isn't feasible. I mean I know I will eventually once they become the 'norm' but for now it'd be pointless for me to buy one. I'm still surprised two competing technologies came out for it since it seems like a waste on both their parts, if the sides had focused on one technology it could have been pushed harder, making the market penetration much larger (the size of both markets combined instead of the two separate ones) and thus making it much more common, leading to the technology replacing dvd's as the most expected optical medium. Ah well, should be interesting to see how the rest plays out.

Basically any net-based technology has amazing tutorials for people with any degree of technical background if you're willing to put in some time to look for them. The only thing you need to remember is to take your time and start simple and work bigger and bigger and everything should work out fine in the end. Good luck!

I agree that there probably isn't a real 'reason' so much as something that just became the historical norm. Probably something they used in one of the old processes was most commonly able to make the end result green, and after that they just kept doing so out of tradition rather then necessity. Obviously, as pointed out, other colors have become available and its not like the dye color of the silicon actually affects performance So yea, I doubt there is a real 'reason' but probably just something that was easier to leave it green then make it other colors back in the earlier years of computer construction.
