  1. I've got to say, I've always been a huge fan of Xisto from the beginning far before I ever became a mod, but the added features that have continuously been showing up are amazing especially when considering that this is, by nature, a free service. A lot of time and effort go into Xisto and I for one am very thankful for everything the higher ups do for us. Rock on
  2. Could you give more information about the actual software? What are its capabilities and limitations? Where does it stack up in relation to photoshop or more importantly Gimp since it is free as well. Try giving a little more meat to your posts rather then just saying to check out a website
  3. Yea maybe if you explain why you would want a .edu address we can help more. They protect certain top level domains in order to avoid having random people using up or impersonating the intended user base. Domains like .gov, .edu, etc have specific purposes that they want to protect so that people can trust sites with those domains that they belong to a specific group. Hence the paperwork and why I doubt there is a quick way to get a .edu
  4. Weird, I almost wish I had some of these issues just to see whats up. I like breaking test software lol But yea, personally it's been rock solid for me, there must be issues with version compatibilities between chrome/java/flash or something. As I mentioned, I'm running chrome on two different versions of windows, with two different versions of java and potentially different versions of flash (although thats less likely as both are probably the latest release) and have yet to see any problems that I wouldn't expect in firefox. Hopefully they iron it all out by the final release or even better just a new beta release.Oh, quick suggestion, I'm sure you likely have but make sure you have the most up-to-date release of chrome as that could help (In the "About Google Chrome" screen there is an auto update check/button in case you didn't know)
  5. Image Magic(magik/magick/something...I forget the spelling they used and dont feel like looking it up) also is a good program for this sort of thing. It is a command line utility (or at least was last time I used it) so it may scare off some people who feel they need a GUI but it is a pretty deep program that can resize, rename, etc large numbers of images at a time. I know I used it for stitching entire directories of images together into animations to create animated versions of output from a program I developed.I'm not saying not to check out fotosizer, it's just always nice to have options
  6. I didn't know there was any popularity to 'slipstreamed' windows versions. I find it pretty interesting even though I'd never use one haha. Windows is unstable enough without less knowledgeable folks poking around in it... heh. What is that commercial... they have windows _____ as the 'next' windows in a test but it ends up being vista Surprised there aren't more people thinking that is legit, heh. But yea, the 'name' of the next windows or the one after that isn't really relevant. I mean, its just a name or codename, so it's not overly important. Hell even information about it at this point is useless since it'll change so much by the time a real release gets here, years from now.
  7. It's not completely useless if you don't want stats to be made about your useage ;)Also, even if it is left to the developer to account for different browsers there still needs to be some way to identify which browser it is, which is where this string comes into play.
  8. Yea really for a lot of what you'd use photoshop for you can accomplish with gimp. Photoshop has more features and more tutorials specifically designed for it, but if you only want to do basic things then it'd be a huge money savings. That said I personally prefer photoshop to gimp (at least the versions of each I've used, neither the newest) so that could play a factor too. It'd be worth trying to get a chance to test out both and judge from there. And I now need to look into CS4, I had no clue it was out
  9. Glad you are happy with the hosting here It is a struggle to respond to hosting requests in a timely manner as the admins are not employees, and have other jobs and lives to tend to as well as this on their free time. Plus there are limitless applications that need to be declined that use time as well However, as you said, the wait is worth it and the hosting here is top notch. thanks for the kind words.I should note, however, that posting in the comments and feedback forum will not guarantee a faster reply If you apply for hosting and a day or two later post in this forum it likely wont have any effect.
  10. If you can get cs or cs2 for a decent price comparative to cs3, go for it because, as mentioned, the additions are not pivotal to use of the program. They are significant if you use them properly but for many people the main usage of the program falls within the feature set that rarely if ever changes. This means that if you were to buy an older version it could still do 99%+ of what you want until you become adept enough to need the new additions. That said if there is a small price differential between the older and newer versions I see no reason to not buy the newest and most full featured version availible in order to get the most out of it since you'll be spending a good amount either way. So yes, do a bit of research
  11. That is very strange. I think I've had a single crash since I started using chrome, and I usually have about 20 tabs open with various sites using a wide range of technologies. Youtube and yahoo mail both have worked flawlessly for me. The only issue I've seen so far is a few other video sites the movies didn't load properly on first try, but none caused crashes of tabs or the browser. Also I use it all day at work and at home, on vista and xp, so it isn't likely an issue with the OS. I'm not sure if I'm super lucky or your system may be causing other problems, but don't assume chrome is THAT glitchy quite yet. Frankly its way more solid than I expected given its early status.
  12. I don't think I've heard bad things about a Fifa game in years if not more. Unfortunately I find soccer/football to be mind numbingly boring haha, but for those that enjoy the sport I can only imagine that this is the pinacle of gaming. I know the Fifa games I've played, technologically, were at the top of their realm. I couldn't think of many faults to say of them ignoring my personal opinions of the sport. If you're a fan of football/soccer I'd have to reccomend this game as well.
  13. Another thing to note is that the multiple monitor solution isn't always to simply have access to multiple pc's. Personally when I've used multiple monitors it has almost always been solely to increase screen real estate. Sure having access to various computers is great, and as mentioned by yordan is possible through other alternatives to your suggestion as well, but it doesn't help in sheer real estate. If I want to have code opened on one screen and be executing it or have helpful notes open on the other screen this isn't really a possible scenario using the one monitor two pc method.
  14. I'd agree VNC is probably your best bet at this point. I know I've used some others where they had some killer cool options and normal password circumvention methods but they were all proprietary or pay software so you should try out vnc first and let us know.
  15. I'm confident it's free. Just check out the website for the game or look up half life modding and you'll get tons of information. I know stuff like counter strike started as free mods so I imagine the toolset is all freely availible from somewhere. You might need to find your own 3d modeling software or whatever but I'm sure they point you to everything you'll need to get started.
  16. I don't know about open source or other free FPS games as most I've seen that were free were pretty crappy games (solely due to lack of resources during creation). That said games like Half-life and half-life 2 both can be modded for single player campaigns, I know I've downloaded single player mods for both of them. "They Hunger" comes to mind for half life, which was a zombie survival horror style fps single player mod for the original half life engine. I'm sure half life 2 can be modded similarly for single or multiplayer so those would be worth checking out. Valve is great about providing the community with user tools for creating user made content.Past that, any game that is moddable and has a single player game probably allows for single player mods. The games may FOCUS on multiplayer themselves, but if they have any capacity for single player I'm sure that you could create a mod that has a larger single player scope then the developers chose to pursue. Multiplayer only games may be able to be modded into a single player excursion but you'd want to check specific games. If you have limited experience I'd say stick with the big names, going with open source games would require actually knowing the coding languages involved as an open source game is unlikely to provide tools for easy game modifications. Also the bigger the game, and bigger the toolset, the bigger the community support will be and therefor you can find lots of help if you get stuck on the way.
  17. That would be rough. I know I tried out the original Stalker but my computer wasn't up to snuff, plus the general poor performance of the game left it nearly unplayable on my system so I didn't get very far into the game before calling it quits. I agree though, games shipped in such poor states are horribly annoying. One of my favorite games on computer (Vampire Bloodlines) is an amazing game that most people hate because it was buggy as hell, had poor performance, etc just like this game seems to. Although Bloodlines was a case of the developer being rushed through the testing phase so often it's simply laziness or trying to save a few bucks on the budget by glossing over testing and assuming later patching is acceptable. GRRR </rant>
  18. I imagine an undo script would be doable if you simply had the code that alters a cell or cells in an excel sheet save a copy of those cells in a variable in memory prior to making the changes. This would allow for a review of the contents as altered by your new code and if they were incorrect a click of the undo button could over-write the new cell data with that stored in the variables of the original data. I'm not sure what scale or how precise you want the undo function but I'm sure you could change the granularity of such a procedure to whatever you need or want. But yea, to summarize: Determine cell(s) to be affected, back them up in some way, over write the cells, review changes, continue as normal or replace with original data if required.Hope this helps, if not maybe more information on your part could be useful.
  19. Another point to note would be prices, where mysql is open source and free I dont know if oracle has any version that is free, and I know there full fledged versions are not as they are meant to be for the corporate world and have paid support in place. True oracle has places it shines the brightest but for personal use it isn't that feasible.
  20. I feel I need to point out, in case anyone stumbles onto this post now that it has been resurrected that many of the early posts are dated 2004, so comments made in regards to GIMP or photoshop could be heavily different from what is currently true or they could even be completely false in regards to the most recent versions. Carry on
  21. http://www.altafsayani.com/2008/09/03/down-chrome-themes/ Chrome themes They are pretty basic, and have to overwrite the original, and probably will break when it updates... but it gets the job done hahaha. Another feature I love is the 'inspect this element" in the right click menu. I haven't found an actual use for it yet, but its cool haha.
  22. Those all work fine for me... are you in the 'new' facebook layout or whatever they call it? In that mode I can do virtually all the regular facebook activities without any trouble whatsoever. Odd...
  23. What facebook issues? I've yet to encounter anything since I started using the browser and I usually have a facebook tab open if I'm on a computer lol
  24. As a follow-up review, I should start off by saying I really REALLY like chrome. A lot. I didn';t expect to especially at first glance at the interface's original aspects but they quickly won me over. First I'll start with a few negatives. The lack of extensions, skins, etc is a bit rough since I am so used to firefox. That said I think both are expected by the final release. A lot of main features were lost in this beta due to it being leaked before they wanted to release it, so that is fully understandable. Next we have that it doesn't offer to save tabs after closing (as far as I can tell). Another minor gripe that I would be surprised if they didn't change by the next release so again, no real worry.Thats it haha. So far those are my only complaints and they both seem like they'll be gone eventually anyways. Past that the browser is light, fast, responsive, and very well designed. The minimalist layout is superb and the minor tweaks they made to things we take for granted are welcome changes to the browser domain. I recommend everyone at least try this browser out as its worth having on your system regardless. I have yet to hit a page that is displayed improperly and haven't had a single tab crash, let alone the browser. The only 'error' I've had is that upon logging into an old hotmail account it wasn't recognized by the site as capable of displaying it's latest gui so had to use the older layout. But for that I just blame Microsoft;) Go download it!
  25. I assumed he had chosen to stop using CSS in place of tables due to some browsers compatibility issues with css.
