  1. True the compatibility issues between new releases and third party addons are sometimes sketchy for a bit but usually it is worthwhile to upgrade. I Know all my time spent on 3 has been problem free so I wouldn't recommend against using it. That said, as has been stated, if the security issues worry you just stick with 2 until they are sorted out. It can't hurt sticking with what you already know.
  2. Buffalo, I'm sure that could play into it somewhat but you need to note the great disparity between read/write speeds. 3mbs write is ridiculously slow but 125mbs read is insanely fast.Another issue that slows drives is simply that they wear out over time, making a slower read/write speed as the actual platters spin slower. This normally is something I'd have suggested but the time between the first and second benchmark dates is way too small for that to play a factor.
  3. Is your system low in ram? If so, having a near full hard drive could cause some issues of that nature. It's odd the benchmarks would show numbers like that but if you have little ram and low free HD the lack of swap space for moving files could heavily impede transfers and the like. That seems really odd though, if the numbers are accurate I have a hard time picturing a scenario that could cause that. Seems almost like the cache or cables are bottlenecking one transfer direction to max out the other or something. Maybe others have better ideas :|
  4. I assume the fastest I've used would either be the super computer on my campus or, if it counts, a beowulf cluster we created at one of my old jobs. I really can't remember the speed but you can imagine it was more powerful than anything you'd buy in a retail store lol.The cluster was 10 computers each running with 4 gigs of ram and a dual core 2.4 ghz processor. We only really used it for one application we had developed but the performance was ridiculously impressive.Probably the fastest retail system I've used wouldn't be that impressive really. Maybe a quad core 2.4 with a couple gigs of ram, average video card. Snappy but nothing amazing.
  5. I personally just use the web based one. I have never been a huge fan of the client services and almost always have a browser open anyways so leaving another program running is just an extra window to contend with. The gmail web interface is slick and easy to navigate and has a decent amount of organizational options so personally I don't see a huge need for it.Beyond that if you still really want a client I'd suggest the latest outlook or thunderbird. I know people seem to auto-hate microsoft products but from what I've used of outlook I've never had any large issues with it (well none that were the applications fault, although other people that have used it more may have some complaints I never came across). Thunderbird is pretty solid too although the older versions I've used had a few small things that annoyed me, but overall it was a very solid product and you can't beat the price.
  6. I'd say for simpler layouts div's are especially preferable. Its important to note the earlier posts in this topic are from a couple years ago, as browsers have a LOT more support for CSS and whatnot now. Frankly I hate tables personally as they can often be messy so I prefer to stick to CSS layouts whenever possible although I agree tables can be useful at times. For very complex layouts css can cause problems if not translated properly between browsers so in those cases, sure, tables are obvious the best choice. For more simplistic layouts with a simple banner, nav bar, and content I'd say always stick with css. Not only is the code nicer, but they load faster and are easier to make changes across the site.So yes, I'd agree that the most flexible is to use both in conjunction with each other, but if possible I'd recommend sticking with CSS.
  7. Alright now that I've finished the game I'll give an update to my opinions lol.The game is amazing. Easily landing in my favorite games of all time. The game doesn't really hold a consistent pace through the last few 'acts' and goes from being more gameplay oriented to heavily narrative oriented... but this isn't a bad thing. Anyone that has enjoyed the series until now is used to this and also will find all the information presented very interesting. not only is new story developed but the storyline from games past is wrapped up much better then I expected would be. Obviously I wont be giving away any details but suffice to say loose ends are all un-loosed lol.Further more, again without giving specifics, the nostalgia created by one of the acts in the game is that which I never thought a video game could create. Seriously, I've never felt that strong of a recoil when presented with some things in a sequel haha. You'll know the scene if or when you see it :)But yes, long and short of it, my initial impressions were dead on. The game is an amazing, amazing creation. A masterpiece of digital entertainment and I probably wont be waiting long before playing through again with the items I unlocked on my first run through. Kudos Kojima.
  8. I just started act 3, but I'm busy with other stuff so haven't played into it yet lol. Plus I'm out of money to spend on new games too so I've been trying to make my games last as long as possible so that I can always have a game waiting to be played haha. But yea, everything I've seen from it so far has been legendary
  9. I don't personally know the way to fix this, however, I would recommend the forums at https://ubuntuforums.org/ (I think that is the address, it's the official ubuntu forums wherever they are) and search or post there. The users on the forum are very helpful when having problems with Ubuntu and more often then not someone else has already encountered the problem you are facing so you might be able to find usable results after a simple search. Good luck!
  10. Well, for starts I should explain this isn't a true review as I have yet to complete the game (I am a fair ways in, but there may be things near the ending that would affect an opinion, so keep that in mind). Also I am biased as I loved this game before I even got my hands on it But I'll try to remain objective haha.Right off the bat when you fire it up you can tell it feels like a MGS game, but different. They haven't changed the formula that worked they just... tweaked it. Even the cutscenes have a similar feel and just look exponentially more gorgeous. The graphics engine in use is highly detailed and perfectly suited for the game. When they use blur effects over surroundings to help focus the eye on certain central points it's hard to tell the objects in those blurred surroundings are CG at all. Some may argue that the game focuses on sneaking less. This is true, as could also have been argued for Snake Eater, but if you want to sneak it is still a powerful and rewarding option. There IS more accommodation for the run-and-gun style of gameplay but it is not promoted or encouraged excluding in a few very rare scenes so if you love the slower paced sneaking type gameplay, as I do, then you can still take full advantage of it (with some neat new in game toys I might add).Speaking of toys, there are a ton of weapons, items, etc in this one. They took out the need for eating, but added the idea of 'psych' which is basically to say snake, being older now, can get stressed and that can impact on his abilities in field. There are items to restore this just like health so it's not a huge factor but is used in some interesting ways (and funny ones in some cutscenes). The storyline. This is where its at when you're playing a MGS game. I've always said Kojima should be directing movies and MGS4 is a testament to this fact. The storyline, while complicated as always and probably would lose those unfamiliar with the backstory, is great so far. The voice acting is just off the charts and the animation is refined to a degree that it's more compelling then I would have imagined. The new villains are works of grotesquely misshapen art with interesting facets and an evil grace about them. The return of old characters is nostalgic and new characters is exciting.Personally I feel this game is EXACTLY what most people will want when they pick it up. It follows the tried and true elements of previous MGS games and adds a number of new elements and refines many of the old to form a new addition to the lineup. If you enjoyed the old MGS games, pick this up. If you haven't played them buy them all If you hated the old (which I couldn't comprehend haha) this probably isn't for you. It's a sequel done to perfection.
  11. This could be a very useful tutorial for someone just starting out into programming. These conditional statements are pretty standard fair and are pivotal to a programmers arsenal be it in javascript or other languages. While the syntax often changes in slight ways the basic concepts stay the same so hopefully some people just starting to look at coding stumble onto this tut.
  12. Since my last post I've installed the latest Opera (non beta) and have enjoyed it. I know that firefox has been annoying me lately because I like to leave my computer on with the browser almost always open with multiple tabs. In firefox this spells an enourmous amount of ram being used within a day or two if you don't retsrat the browser on occasion. As far as I can tell opera is keeping ram usage to a reasonable level which is something I've been hoping for. I think I'll be trying the opera beta out soon to see what kind of changes they've made.
  13. You have to remember he carefully chose to put best in your opinion in the title Where we use the web so frequently (well most of us do) the personal preferences of web browsing play a huge role in which web browser we now feel is the best. Personally I have stuck with firefox a long time but am actually planning to give opera another shot just to see if it can convince me to change with any of the updates it has made since my last test drive. IE still has yet to be able to win me back but opera was never really neglected by me it simply always got edged out by firefox so I'd always have it around but rarely or never use it. Now that the majority of browser have adopted the latest batch of new trends one of the companies might need to think up some creative new innovations to stand out from the pack.
  14. You could make use of global variables but they are not always the best idea since it's easy to introduce coding problems into applications by making wide use of globals. A good alternative is to simply pass the variables to the constructors or other methods for the different classes and store the true value in a variable in main and just have the various classes modifying the original value.
  15. Then the president that 'wins' will still result in choosing which portions of big business have the power, or else there would already be a landslide for the 'winner' if all the powers behind them agreed and worked together. So regardless of how corrupt the system has become the hopes that one candidate will win over another still holds a solid amount of weight and with it various consequences over how power will be divided in one of the worlds most powerful nations for the next four years.
  16. You could quickly learn the CSS required to making a pretty decent setup for a website based game. If you have previous web programming experience I'd really recommend just trying to build your own from scratch so it truly is yours and does everything you want specifically how you want it to.
  17. You should really post a little more information about the game you hope to create. Just making a text based game is severely broad and maybe if you post some more specific information it might catch the interest of some of the many web developers on the site currently.Past that I will wish you good luck
  18. I recently purchased a PS3 instead of a 360 and I must say, this game is really the only one I regretted not being able to play. Sure the 360 had some other games that were not offered on the ps3 but this one was the only one I had not played at all that I reeeeally had been hoping to. I'm pretty sure my computer would be incapable of running it well enough to warrant getting it so I guess I'm out of luck, but from what I've seen of it in reviews and at friends places I'd say you're review seems spot on.
  19. Ummm, I'm not sure where you are saying this formula came from but it looks like pretty basic math where WILL and LEVEL are variables to be replaced by your WILL stat and current LEVEL assumedly.
  20. I will second that W3 Schools is amazing. I've also used tizag as well so I can back up the claim that both are great resources for learning php. In reality php is not that overly complex to get the basics down pact and in turn you can learn alot by running through basic tutorials on these sites. If you have programming experience it should come fairly easy and if not I would recommend following any tutorials closely from these sites or trying out each new piece of code as they teach you about them. I'm pretty sure both those resources would also talk about any of the related required MYSQL tasks that you will face.As an overall rule as well, web coding is very popular and as such anytime you get stuck a simple google query will usually result in a quick example to help you solve your problems. Good luck learning php!
  21. Yea it's amazing what css can do when you get creative. There are a lot of built in things but a ton of little tricks like you did that present some interesting and quite great results if you just use the available customizations in creative ways and combinations. I know I've personally used endless combinations of things to get weird results just because I was too lazy to look up the more standard ways to do things or to make my own way look a little different then the 'normal' way to do it. If you can find a custom way to do something using CSS, goto town haha.
  22. Yea it would depend on the game, personally I couldn't imagine many companies actually going after someone running a server even if they legally could, its probably more so to make sure they are not liable if something happens on these open servers. I would imagine the majority of games, however, don't care enough to even put it in the EULA and a lot of games actually openly provide the software required to run your own server so in those instances it is obviously fine. There isn't a blanketing rule that says yes or no to having a personal server for all games ever, so if you are concerned it'd be best to look up the particular games you are worried about and go from there.
  23. I would imagine such a program exists... I dont know of any but they must. I mean you likely wouldn't want one that is constantly doing like a 30 passover wipe of every files storage location when you delete it but having one to run on occasion to clear out the debris would be a good way to ensure any sensitive data is gone forever after deleting it.
  24. I dont know, personally if I was going to use a pay program for the ability to remote connect easily I would probably go with something like PCAnywhere. Sure you need to install it on the remote pc too but then at least you know that you are using a secure connection that other people don't have any connection to. I'm with the others in feeling a little iffy about giving a website full access to my pc. I know it's highly unlikely they would use it improperly but it only takes one employee having a bad day that randomly chooses your pc to mess with to cause a lot of problems for you.
  25. if it actually performs the DoD level erase it completely swipes every bit of the drive to 0's, then 0's, then 0's, etc I believe something like 30 times ensuring that every single bit, even if there are errors in one or two of the swipes, is switched to a 0 by the end. This not only destroys the ability to access the table by killing the indexing system of the drive but literally wipes every single bit clean of whatever data was held there so regardless of efforts put forth there is no way to return the data to its original form. So if it's just one drive the DoD wipe should be fine, but if you are that worried...for whatever reason... then just do it again haha. If its just the one drive, and its a 98 era drive, it cant be that huge so shouldn't take that long. But if the only personal data is like game saves and some personal emails and stuff any type of drive wiping utility should be fine.
