See, this is where I get divided. I've come up with some stuff that I would LOVE to be patented, but it is software. I hate software patents as well. Copyrights I have no problem with. They're accepted everywhere now and EVERYTHING is automatically copyrighted. Even this post! Personally, I think copyrights are more powerful than patents. Patents say "Here's how you make me (plans available on the patent listing) but don't you dare try to build me." and copyrights say "Here's what you can and cannot do with me, and I make sure my creator gets credit." Much better when applied to software. Patents should be for physical inventions. [N]F

Exactly. Microsoft can't and won't accept change. You know what was big before Microsoft released Windows? Apple! Bill couldn't stand that another company was leading the market of operating systems so he copied and then put it on IBM's PC. Apple then had a fit and then they started suing each other and lots of other fun stuff. Then they finally settled down. Now, because the world is started going open source, Microsoft wants to do exactly what they did to Apple, just in a different form. I also read that Microsoft made a similar move on RedHat, but RedHat made a smart move and told Microsoft, "No" so I wouldn't be surprised if the corporate idiots at Microsoft have been a little "moody" lately. The really do not like open source software. [N]F

So the truth comes out. Actually, I was going to post this here a while back but never got the time to do so. Anywho, apparently the whole "deal" with Novell was just so Microsoft wouldn't have to sue the pants off of every SuSE Linux user world-wide. A quote from the Computer World article: Uh, excuse me? Patent violations? It's open source and released under the GNU/GPL! What are these violations? You know, I think Microsoft should just go ahead and sue and then we'll see how everything works out. That would be Microsoft vs. Every Linux User in the World. This is very absurd. They might as well sue the Apache Software Foundation because the Apache Web Server "serves" pages and content just like it's (terrible quality) IIS server. Anyways, full article here: http://www.computerworld.com.au/ [N]F

Today I was out looking for the WRT54GL, the router with the Linux based firmware. I can't seem to find it in stores ANYWHERE! It's like Linksys is anti-GPL so they created this router just to get people to shut up about how they changed the WRT54G when someone noticed it was Linux based and they should have provided the source code.I'd like to get a WRT54GL so I can load DD-WRT on it as DD-WRT looks like excellent firmware. My router, WRT54G v5 can only support the mini-DD-WRT because Linksys decided to go evil with this version and made the firmware non-Linux based (probably why my router crashes every now and then) and the chip that holds the firmware only 2 MB, not the 6 MB flash chip. I think the folks at Linksys should just open their eyes and start marketing the open-source routers more. I'd love one. I think they would be a hit out there on the market. I love my Linksys router so much that when my band director wanted to know what kind of router to buy, I immediately responded with Linksys! He purchased his almost a year after mine so he got version 6 of the WRT54G. As far as I know, he's had no problems with it.But I think that Linksys really has nothing to worry about. They can sell the hardware as that is really needed, but the firmware shouldn't matter at all. I really think all their firmware should be open-sourced. It could do them some good! [N]F

I'd love wireless power!! Then I could get rid of that bundle of power cables behind my monitors (I have dual monitors) and behind my desk! I use 1 full power strip (maybe 1 free outlet) for my computer alone (speakers, 2 monitors, power supply) and lets just say, I almost need a PVC pipe to organize all the cables, lol! Then on some other outlets, I'm actually out of room. My room consumes the most energy, that's for sure.[N]F

I've been watching this Webcast on Novell's website about the "merger" between Microsuck and Novell. If you haven't realized it, it's Microsuck's attempt to spread it's evil monopolist ways into a GOOD company. The entire thing is BS. Microsoft interested in Open Source software (SuSE linux)??? NO WAY! Not only can't Steve Ballmer say "Free software" (see this slashdot article: https://it.slashdot.org/story/06/11/13/1432221/steve-ballmers-thoughts-on-free-software) but he can't even pronounce "SuSE". He says about 5 variations.. Also, SuSE Enterprise Linux is going to have "subscriptions" so you get support from both NOVELL and MICROSOFT and they're supposed to be working on a way to run MS apps on Linux sort of like on Mac, you know, running IE without WINE. Plus, if you listen to the Webcast, hint Novell & Microsoft's favorite keywords: proprietary, software patent, licensing, patents, open source, subscriptions. Great, my life dream: to soon start pirating Linux. I never thought I'd see the day. You can see the brainwas.....err... webcast here: https://www.suse.com/newsroom/post/2011/microsoft-and-suse-renew-successful-interoperability-agreement WARNING: It's filled with BS. It makes me mad that Microsoft, a company that HATES open source, is now trying to develop NEXT to it. It makes me want to create my own linux distro, if I only knew how to do such a thing. [N]F

Install Windows XP Unattended
nightfox1405241487 replied to ruijie's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Or, if you have Windows Server 2003, you can easily deploy Windows XP installations.[N]F -
It appears you have no SMTP server installed. That's probably why it is error-ing out... no server to send the mail, it freaks! Just try to find a free SMTP server and that should solve your problems.[N]F

Personally, when it comes down to my computer, I just use AVG Anti-Virus and AdAware. I totally skip the firewall and use Windows XP's built in firewall. I know I probably shouldn't, but my router takes 99.9% of everything that attacks me. I've actually have been thinking about adding a hardware firewall for extra protection, just in case something made it through. But ever since I got rid of dial-up and built my network, everything works fine. I have had zero alerts from norton on the other computer about any intrusions being detected unlike the usual one per day when I had good old dial up.[N]F

If you want to know why, I'm sorry to say this but, people are really stupid and will click and run anything. My Cisco teacher fixes computers for pocket money and he once had a computer that had over 3500 spywares on it!!!!! Yes, you read correctly: 3500. The "average" user today has the intelligence of a two-year-old (no offense to anyone, but I'm hoping you all are competent enough) and will basically click anything that is underlined, moves, or flashes. Also, it isn't 100% Microsoft's fault either. Yes the file system sucks and easily allows unauthorized changes, but it is the idiot users. I NEVER get viruses and I NEVER get spyware, yet I visit more websites than the average user. [N]F

Windows Vista Too Strict?
nightfox1405241487 replied to demolaynyc's topic in Websites and Web Designing
You know what? When vista comes out, I'm going to stay with XP and Linux. Why? Vista Home Basic (lowest of low of all editions of vista) costs MORE than what I paid for XP Pro. Second, no one in their right mind would purchase Vista Ultimate which costs $400. I'm glad I didn't wait another year to build my new computer else I would have had to run either Windows 98 or Linux as my primary OS. Sure, Vista looks cool but it's going to be a headache. I'm urging people to go Linux or stay with XP. If enough people protest, MS will probably delay the date to which they no longer support XP. That's what happened with Win98, ME, and NT. XP is MUCH better than Vista. MS moved things around so much that me, a computer expert, was having trouble finding things that I used to be able to easily find. Control Panel is a mess. [N]F -
You would be correct, vujsa. See, when CPanel is moving accounts from other servers, there's too much data loss risk if everyone was permitted to continue writing to the server hard disks. Not only would files be fragmented, but lots of data (both incoming data from the other servers and yours) would potentially be lost. Plus, as new accounts are added, Apache's httpd.conf, the FTP config, the name servers and all have to be restarted causing downtime. Don't complain. Be HAPPY the server is doing this for the protection of YOUR DATA! Just wait it out! [N]F

I'm also experincing this issue on my desktop and my laptop. I'm wondering if there's some crappy update MS released that is really screwing up the system clocks?Everytime I reboot my system, CMOS and Windows says it's 6:44 (or 6 whatever) PM when it is really 10:44 PM. I'll reset the time in CMOS as well and boot into Windows to find it is 6:44 AGAIN!In SuSE, the time is correct! I'm having a similar issue on my laptop! WTF is going on?!? I've NEVER had anything crazy as this happen before![N]F

xboxrulz, or anyone else, this seems quite interesting when I ran what you gave me: Shutting down network interfaces: eth0 device: nVidia Corporation MCP55 Ethernet (rev 2a) eth0 configuration: eth-id-00:17:31:d9:ad:d3Shutting down service network . . . . . . . . I only left because I didn't have DSL and I haven't really used SuSE since SuSE 8 and Linux without broadband is quite difficult. Thanks, I'll have to look into it. I'm too used to RedHat and Fedora Core where there is a "Network" menu with all the eth devices. I really like it a lot because it is easy to enable or disable eth0/eth1, etc. Except on SuSE, it sees it and it says that the IP is to be configured by DHCP (which is what I want because this is my personal system and not a server) but it isn't getting an IP. No connection. But everytime that config utility runs, it says it's enabled. I'm currently not at home right now so I'll have to try this later. [N]F

On my main computer, I got SuSE 10.0 installed as a dual boot with no problems except the network. SuSE sees my integrated NIC card (it's on the motherboard) but I can't get online! I went into terminal, did a SU - and logged in and then did an ifconfig... eth0 is there but no IPv4 address, just an IPv6 and then the loopback address. Could it be that I'm running the 32 bit version of it and when I went to install, it was like "Cool computer, but.... this is 32 bit and you're using a 64 bit processor!!!!"? Just wondering. I could probably download 10.1 64 bit overnight and just burn and install it tomorrow. Any ideas?? Here's what the terminal said: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:17:31:D9:AD:D3 inet6 addr: fe80::217:31ff:fed9:add3/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:130 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:44662 (43.6 Kb) TX byes:0 (0.0 Kb) Interrupt:223 Base address:0xe000Loopback doesn't seem to have any problems. Also, just another problem, I have a dual monitor system and I was wondering if there was a way to get SuSE to "extend" my desktop, like in Windows. Thanks! [N]F

Connecting 2 Wireless Routers
nightfox1405241487 replied to Mr.GreenHat's topic in Computer Networks
I second that. Also, I think we should also define router: Router (n.) - A network device used to communicate with other networks and route data packets. So really, you're just using a feature loaded switch and access point [N]F -
Choosing A Linux Distro. Why Should I Pick Yours?
nightfox1405241487 replied to Hercco's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I agree with that. Personally, I've used and use SuSE, Debian, RedHat 9, Fedora Core 4 & 5, MEPIS (pure crap... I don't like it at all), Ubuntu/Kubuntu, CentOS 4.3, Xandros, and several more (mostly server editions which wouldn't make great desktops). I can't tell you about Freespire because I can't get it to install on anything. To start, cross off Debian, Red Hat 9, MEPIS (never use), and Xandros. Ubuntu is great and it is always the perfectly working OS. If you like KDE, go with Kubuntu or just install KDE on Ubuntu to have both Gnome and KDE. Ubuntu has always worked with what I needed it to do and is right up there on the lists with me next to SuSE. I actually couldn't really pick which one to put first so they're on the same line. Ubuntu is easy to use for both pros and newbies to Linux. I wish Ubuntu was around when I discovered Linux because I know for sure I would have used it all the time! Ubuntu is designed more as a desktop OS than a server OS which is great. [N]F -
