  1. Haha... I'm telling people otherwise... and I am a network admin! It is a big pain in the butt... I work for a K-12 school system and one of the techs was playing around with a copy of it. Since we use Novell to power our logins, it has been found that Novell Client will NOT replace the Windows login screen unlike on XP and previous Windows versions. We can't have this. Not only that, we then have to re-learn where everything is. Some of my other techie friends have told me it has taken them forever to find really easy to find things in XP. It's also a rip off of MacOS X despite what other MS Fanboys claim. It's way too similar to even call "original". Vista bad, XP good. (Linux is also good, despite what MS may claim.) [N]F
  2. I personally don't have a use, but it seems kinda cool! I've seen some other logo generators but I guess if you want your own custom sparkle text, this is the one! [N]F
  3. Hey all As a supporter of open source software and a user of Linux, I am angered at Microsuck's latest actions and lawsuit threats towards Linux Kernel, GUI, OpenOffice.org, and many other open source applications. All I have to say is, why the wait? Most of the stuff they're COMPLAINING violates their patents is OLDER or JUST AS OLD as Windows. Also, they're leaving a lot out of the lawsuits: Linux is based off of UNIX so they would have to then sue the creators and/or users of UNIX... but wait, it gets better! They would then have to sue Apple because MacOS is based off of UNIX and Linux. See the big picture? Honestly, all this BS is Ballmer and Gates' PMS flairing up because they won't admit their products suck and can't stand the competition of Linux and open source. Guess what Ballmer! You're an ignorant idiot CEO who can't even SAY the word "free"! The only word you can say is LICENSING and COMMERCIAL. Just look at everything poping up on Digg's Linux/Unix channel (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/) https://www.linux.com/news/torvalds-and-moglen-agree-ms-patent-claims-are-fud http://www.informationweek.com/microsoft-wont-sue-linux-users-company-exec-says/d/d-id/1055091 http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ A quote from my favorite article on CNN Money: Source: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (also a good read!) Supporters of Open Source Software: STAND YOUR GROUND! We can't let Microsoft take over! [N]F
  4. Wow... after skimming this topic after coming back from my NYC trip, I feel I need to make some points. 1. Linux/Windows/Mac - Ok, lets clear some of this up. This topic is NOT to bash other OSes which is going on. Whether you like to tinker around on your system (Linux), hope that everything works and nothing crashes (Windows) or like the stability of Linux with more centralized support/hardware/drivers (MacOS), it doesn't matter what you think. All of you MacOS fans who were bashing Linux, guess what... you "inferior" OS is BUILT OFF OF LINUX. MacOS X, that is. If you must know, let me put this into a flowchart form: /- Linux -\ UNIX - - MacOS X \- MacOS -/Now that chart does NOT say Mac "OW3NS" all or anything, it simply states that MacOS X is built off of UNIX, Linux, and previous Mac platform. Of course, BSD is also in there but the majority of it is just *NIX and Mac. Windows is completely off the charts. Some people do not like commercial software for several reasons. Commercial software has a longer life than open source, but still, it's basically the same. With Open Source, there are no "extra hidden licensing fees" when you buy a computer. I tried to order a computer from Dell with NO OS what so ever. I couldn't do it (which is bull because why should I pay for something I don't want). 2. No one cares that you like Vista. It's a matter of opinion. - I really don't like Vista and so I don't care if you like having a resource sucking operating system installed. If you're not a geek, never opened your computer and cannot even correctly identify what your processor, amount of RAM and your OS is, don't say anything. In fact, go to Xisto.com. If you're going to state an opinion about Vista, at LEAST you can back up what you have to say with facts. I don't like it because 1) it uses way too much disk space, 2) it uses 57% of RAM (1 GB installed) with nothing but the GUI running after boot up and 3) way to much freaking eye candy and stupid window effects that I don't care about, nor do I need. Ok, I feel the need to rest a bit and unpack my things... jet lag is starting to hit me a little bit more now. [N]F
  5. As far as I know, Cpanel 11 is still in development. Cpanel 10 is still the latest stable version. Anyways, it isn't a good idea to install beta (or alpha) control panel software until it is 99% stable because it interacts with the server hardware. The last thing needed on any server environment is malfunctioning hardware due to beta software.[N]F
  6. You have to give it time. One of my more newer websites for an organization I run was turning up results from the township's website. Now, with help of keywords and much SEO, I've finally started knocking down the results returning the township website. It takes time and eventually, google will be on your site daily and it will be re-updating it's index. If you wanted to really keep your help topics private, don't post a link or associate any keywords with your site in your help topic here unless someone asks. Google can be a wild beast that you just have to learn how to tame! [N]F
  7. Since networking is my life, I'll get this somewhat cleared up.2 NICs won't make anything faster unless you have your software configured to do so. Like Novell NetWare can be configured to use 1 NIC for incoming traffic and the second for outgoing traffic or for redundancy, like if NIC 1 is loaded, NIC 2 can take some traffic. For the everyday home user, it really serves no purpose on a workstation. You just eat up another IP address on your network.[N]F
  8. All the hype is that it sucks... all it is is 10+ gigs of graphics and pretty eye candy and is as stable as a newly born calf trying to walk... and that is being modest. Honestly, when I had vista installed, less than half my software worked and 1 gig of RAM is NOT ENOUGH. After bootup, 57% of RAM is used up! What the heck?!? NOTHING is running exept Aero and the GUI... it shouldn't be using THAT much. The techs at my school have already decided that we're keeping Vista out of the environment. XP will be staying for a long time. [N]F
  9. Most of you already know that Dell is going to possibly (keyword) be pre-installing Linux on select versions of it's computers. On Digg, released about a day ago and has since been removed, and image on Dell's website (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/;) showed that Ubuntu would officially be the first pre-installed Linux OS ever to be pre-installed by an OEM. In Dell's support website, there's even an article on how to install Ubuntu on your Dell computer. (http://www.dell.com/support/contents/us/en/19/category/Product-Support/Self-support-Knowledgebase?c=us&l=en&s=gen=) I've lost the article and link, but all this pointing towards Ubuntu only seems logical because even the big man himself, Michael S. Dell, uses Ubuntu on his rigged out laptop! Michael Dell is the first billionaire CEO to ever use and support the open source Linux operating system! In your face, Mr. Gates! Just admit it... Linux will rule the world. Windows will fail. Why? Just take a look at the Linux and Windows forums here at Xisto to understand why! All these hints are pointing to the fact that Dell will soon be pre-installing Ubuntu very soon. Hopefully within the end of the month or sooner. Dell quickly responded to bringing back Windows XP on most of its systems, a sign to Microsoft that Vista sucks! Personally, I'm not the die-hard Ubuntu fan. I really honestly hope that Dell will also sell computers pre-installed with Fedora Core. Also, found on Digg, that Toshiba (Italy) is rolling on out systems pre-installed with Linux. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ It just goes to show, Linux is starting to become very popular. One of these days, Windows will be #2 in the market. [N]F
  10. IMO, Vista is a lot WORSE than what it should have been... it is a major jump from XP which no one (software & hardware companies) were expecting. I know Apple was saying not to expect iTunes for a while. It's all a big mess in my eyes... so far, I plan on only using Windows XP and Windows 2000.[N]F
  11. Do you have a spare PCI Express or PCI graphics card from another PC and put into this one to make sure the graphics card is working? With todays demands of servers and servers being launched at home, most servers are "headless" meaning no keyboard, mouse or monitor and are remote controlled. The only time a graphics card is needed is during OS installation unless you image so most BIOSes won't care if there's a graphics card or not. You might want to check that graphics card in another machine as well.[N]F
  12. Wow... I printed this one out for future reference! Gotta love Windows! But this really shows you how dumb Microsoft really is. There might even be other tricks too... such as executing malicious code or what not at a time. In other words, your system could be a ticking time bomb and the malicious code could really do some damage (especially being "god windows user").[N]F
  13. "USB wireless connector" tells us nothing at all... there are hundreds of "USB wireless connectors" out there. If you can be more specific, you can probably get some assistance. Just saying your USB wireless connector is a statement. No one can help you if you don't give details.[N]F
  14. Well said! That is perfectly good reasoning. I've take it people abused it like many many many years ago? All in all, it's still good to even PREVENT this abuse from happening! Go admin & mod teams! You guys rock! [N]F
  15. Process of elimination: ROUND 1: Regionals... only the first and second place advance to States. 3-5 get medals and certificates. 1&2 get plaques, medals, and certificates. ROUND 2: States... 1-3 get trophies and medals. 4-10 get medals. Only 1-5 advance to Nationals. I hope that clears some confusion up. [N]F
  16. New York City... where the actual event will be, I don't know. I'm going to be all over the city with my small group. Yeah, I like networking a lot. Next year, I plan on entering a competition called Network Design Team. You're given a task and have to design a network. I think that's what you do, but I'll have to double check. I know there is also a presentation involved as well. State as in the State of Ohio. That's why I'm going to nationals, which is the entire United States and I have to compete against the top 5 out of 17 or so states, assuming each of the member states send 5 people from the networking competition at the state level. [N]F
  17. Generally, what you're looking for is in pages 1, 2, 3, or 4. I rarely go beyond 10 because the rest of the results are pointless. 99.85% of what I need is on page 1 within the top 10 results. The remaining percentage is on anything beyond page 1 and up to 5. If what you're looking for isn't in the 50 limited pages, then refine your search. Google must obviously think that way as well as 50 pages is a LOT of results for a query. [N]F
  18. Yeah, that's because you can only be a member of a domain or workgroup. I have a domain setup at home and one of my computers is attached to it. Another computer in my house isn't a part of it and just on the workgroup called WORKGROUP. This computer also has the network printer. A laptop is connected to the workgroup MSHOME. All of them access the shared printer in the WORKGROUP workgroup. At home, you should just be able to hit the options button on the Windows login screen and then select that you want to login to your local workstation. It isn't practical to keep removing and then adding the domain everytime you come home and go back to work. [N]F
  19. Well, sorta off topic, but lets look at it from reality. You just have to find a distro that works and you like. SuSE is like the Vista of Linux. Yeah, it's got eye candy, but it gets rather annoying after you use it for a while. I've used Fedora the longest so it's the most I feel "at home" with. Honestly, I was having trouble getting WINE installed on SuSE (and failed) but I had it installed in two seconds on Fedora. SuSE had a built in Citrix client, I had to do some hacking to get the Citrix ICA client installed (which I need for school). I've tried a bunch of Linux distros (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, MEPIS, SuSE, CentOS, Debian, and a few others) but I'm not a big fan of some of those distros (which even had all the drivers I needed). MEPIS I absolutely hate and will never use again, Debian required a lot of hacking to finally get satisfactory. So, I've stuck with Fedora Core. I had a web server on my network operating Fedora and I figured I might as well give it another shot, except use it full time. You just have to find your niche and stick with it. (Sorry for getting WAY off topic) [N]F
  20. Yeah, SuSE was acting all weird so now I'm back at FC6. I've used FC a lot longer than I have SuSE so I'm happy at where my computer is at now. I'm excited to see what FC7 brings to the world of Linux! [N]F
  21. Yeah, same here... I didn't realize it was April Fools until like 7:00 tonight and I was thinking about the Gmail Paper and then it hit me! Would be cool, though they'd use massive amounts of paper and postage! [N]F
  22. Ok, Google, you guys come up with a lot of funny tricks! Lets take a look at this year's pranks: 1. Free broadband called "Google TiSP" See it: https://www.google.com/tisp/ 2. Gmail Paper. Gmail may have been launched on April Fools, but it's no joke. Gmail Paper, obviously is. See it: https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false&continue=https://mail.google.com/mail/&ss=1&scc=1&ltmpl=default&ltmplcache=2&emr=1&osid=1 and http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Excellent pranks this year! Gmail Paper would be really cool though! It'd save me from having to waste my own paper and ink! I'm willing to wait 2-4 business days for my emails! lol One question though, why didn't they give us 3 gigs?? I thought they would last year when Gmail turned 3, but obviously, the 3 gig mark is a while off. [N]F
  23. Ok, good news! I have sound, but now other things are acting weird... like my screen saver kicks in every 20 or so idle seconds and you know that signature bar right under my registered Linux user certificate? Sometimes it appears to go "hyper cycle" and just switches very fast.Well, it's Linux so there's got to be a hack for it somewhere! Any ideas?[N]F
  24. Hmm... I don't think anything is muted... I'll check again. Maybe I'll also try some things under GNOME (I'm currently under KDE). So far this is my only Linux system that has worked perfectly (not counting FC6 where almost everything worked). EDIT: Here's a screen shot of the KInfoCenter for sound: [N]F
  25. I recently installed SuSE Enterprise Desktop 10 this morning and it's working alright. DNS requests are a little slow to my DNS server but that's alright with me. Anyways, I had Fedora Core 6 installed beforehand and I really prefer SuSE and FC6 had sound but SuSE does NOT. I've checked some settings and it does reconize my onboard sound. I've adjusted the system volume several times as well and no luck.Any ideas? Thanks![N]F
