  1. I'm currently using SuSE Enterprise Desktop 10 on my main computer. I like it a lot. SuSE is a great brand and ever since Novell took over, I've seen some major improvements. I'm starting to phaze myself out of the Windows world as much as possible, but from what I've noticed, SuSE is on top of things pretty well. I've had good experiences with Red Hat/Fedora Core and SuSE to honestly say SuSE is good.[N]F
  2. That's not entirely true. For example, a PHP 3 script will run fine under PHP 5, but a PHP 5 script will NOT run under PHP 3. It works the same way Microsoft Office works. A old version (Office 97) can create a Word doc and it'll open in every version through 07. However, 03 can create a document but you won't be able to open it in 97. That's why most scripts on the Internet are labled PHP 4.X+ meaning they will support that version of PHP or later unless it is stated it will only work with PHP 4. When in doubt, just go to the script creator's website and download from there. Fantastico doesn't always have the latest versions so maybe there is a fix. [N]F
  3. Make sure you actually use the assigned shared name of the printer. I always use windows to do that and then it usually says that the host doesn't have the correct print driver installed and then I just browse to the .ini file on my server. If something doesn't work, just go back to the begining. On the remote computer (the one the printer ISN'T connected to), delete the printer. Start using the add printer wizard and then choose network printer and then browse to the location of it. That always works for me.[N]F
  4. I'm doing some work on a friend's computer and OMG, this thing is so virus infected, I'm actually charging a "Network Threat Risk" fee because I'm putting my own network at risk! Ok, here's the senario: NO Browser can connect to the Internet. They all time out and whatnot...they can't even access the local network. Like I have a server 192.168.1.5 and my router is 192.168.1.1. Neither will show anything other than the time out message. However, they are accessable in Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, the computer can roam the net freely. Anyone know of any viruses that cause this problem? Thanks! EDIT: I found an unresolved instance: here's a thread from another forum: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ [N]F
  5. Yeah... he thought it's piracy when you don't run LINUX without a valid WINDOWS license! Yeah, really. He sounds like my old physics teacher before he got fired... he's opening his mouth and he doesn't know what he's saying. Yet something has him convinced that Linux runs off of Windows... :S [N]F
  6. This is just absolutely L-O-L comedy right here. This is the classic ignorance and computing. Ok, to sum up this loser, he thinks that Linux runs on Windows and so does Mac OS X and OS/2 failed because of Microsoft. Here's one of my favorite paragraphs in one of the earlier posts of this guy: Let's point out the flaws, shall we? Linux is not an "Office" alternative. OpenOffice.org is in that category. Apparently the Windows GUI is "hidden away" in Linux. If it is, then why do we have KDE, GNOME, and X Window? It needs drivers and software services to run with a Windows License?? That's funny... I've done just about 100 Linux installations on about every flavor of Linux. Not one of them seemed to require a Windows License. Also in that early post, he says What?? Has this guy ever used Linux?? It's IMPOSSIBLE to pirate Linux! One of my favorite paragraphs from his second post: Many companies DO sell computers without "a windows". Dell might be the first big OEM to actually offer this option (hopefully). It clearly is happening... -> Go to Dell's IdeaStorm site... Linux on Dells is the #1 voted item! Wait... Windows is MORE than Office?? So Windows running a system from start to finish is something very difficult? Maybe for an amature programmer, but it is NOT the case. Look at all the Linux flavors out there! Really, a lot of people think this is hard? Mass poll time!! How many of you thought that programming a "whole system that runs the computer from start to finish" is very difficult to "acheive"? Anyways, go get a laugh of it here: http://www.zdnet.com/ [N]F
  7. Yeah, you also have the option vhortex gave... just move the hard disk (don't forget to set the jumper settings!) into the computer you want to transfer them to. Windows (assuming this is your OS of choice) should see it as drive E:, F:, G:, H:, etc. depending on if you have other drives. If you only have a C: and D:, then this second hard disk will be seen as E:. Once you copy everything over, just set the jumpers back and place the drive back into the other computer and you'll be good to go! [N]F
  8. You can't. SMS (aka text messaging) is limited to phones. Not unless your server has a phone line hooked up to it! (<--- I want full credit for that if that ever becomes an invention). [N]F
  9. Simple. Get a crossover cable and connect your two computers together (assuming both have NIC cards). Then you just share what you need on either computer and then just access what you need from each computer. If you need anymore assistance, please ask. I'm a networking genius and I have a high reputation around for being good at networking... not only that, I've won many networking competitons. I know what I'm talking about.[N]F
  10. Hey,I'm happy to announce that Thursday, I was in a Computer Network Technology competition against 35 or so other students from state high schools, career centers and joint vocational schools. The competition (closest compareson is the CompTIA Network+ exam) was challenging, but I thought it was easy. Students all around my state (I think even a few held Network+ certs) who competed in the State Competition had to beat a few people in Regionals.Out of the top 10, I'm glad to say I'm #3 in the state! So now I get to study more and move on to Nationals in NYC! Trust me, this is a real honor. I think I might even take my Network+ cert between now and Nationals... after all, my study materials have been Network+ study guides and practice exams! All of this is for an organization I'm enrolled in at my career center called Business Professionals of America. In the end, I think I have a good chance at earning some really good scholarships! ;)I love networking! Who knew that being this big of a geek could get me this far? [N]F
  11. I hate to leech off of this topic, but it is related to DNS... would doing this on Windows Server be almost the same? (Obviously, I'd be through the GUI, not a file) Thanks![N]F
  12. There was a specific program I found... I forget what it was called.. I liked it a lot. It ran on Windows, but acted like FTP but it wasn't FTP. It was like SSH, but GUI form.EDIT: I found it!!! WinSCP! [N]F
  13. Hi,What is the alternative to SSH that is more graphical like Windows Explorer but one side is the local computer and the other side is the Linux server and it allows you to drag & drop and easily move files?I really need it as I had a server that suffered an apache crash and I have to restore my httpd.conf file and it would be easier to copy and paste from Notepad and then upload it to the server. Thanks![N]F
  14. There's your problem. That software can't even locate ITSELF... back in the old days, I used to have that problem. I worked on a client's computer once... AOL wouldn't even INSTALL. Well, it would, couldn't find the modem... oh, it was there... I had their computer call my cell phone. AOL tech support was blaming HP and HP tech support was blaming AOL. Go with DSL if you can... cable is freaking over-priced and no dedicated line. DSL is dedicated and rather cheap. Just get rid of AOHell... it causes too many problems on computers... WAY too many problems. [N]F
  15. Honestly, I don't know why we let these "hacker nations" or "untrustworthy nations" even have Internet access! We could open up some IPs on the net if we took countries that abuse the Internet and don't do anything about spam, viruses, hackers, etc. offline.I really don't get the point of trying to take the Internet down. Yes, you'd be famous but the FBI, CIA, and other government organizations, and a few billion people would try to kill the person succeeding. If people want to go back to the stone age, let them. I for one FUNCTION off the Internet. Without technology, I do not have a job.Anyways, thanks to these things called load balancers, they can launch multiple servers and keep traffic loads light off of each individual server. Lets see you hack the net now...[N]F
  16. Hey,I'm studying for my Network+ cert (and, well, state competition as well) and I really want to get my Network+ and make it to nationals in competition. The test software that came with the Exam Cram 2 book is pretty basic, I've taken the "practice" test of 50 questions over and over... it recycles the same questions and I've lost intrest... when you keep scoring a 80-97% all the time, it gets pretty boring! Thanks for any help! I really want to pass with flying colors and make nationals!![N]F
  17. How can these companies exist? I have a friend who I provide computer services for and he wants to register a domain for his pizza shops which go under the brand of "Tasty Pizza of <location>" (there are currently 2 locations). Since I deal with all of his technology business transactions and he wanted the domain "tastypizza.com", so I inquired a quote from the company. Guess the price!! $15? Nope... not even close. $20? REALLY COLD. In fact, you're in the serious negitives... hmm... how about $100? STILL WAY OFF! Try $15,900... yes, fifteen THOUSAND, nine-hundred dollars!!! These companies are seriously "eating" the net of usable domains and charging almost 3000% markup of a $9/year domain! I could understand any price between $10 and $40... but almost $16,000 is through the roof! I'm going to suggest to my friend that he register his trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and sue this company for trademark infringement. He's got the paperwork he's owned the business longer than that company stole the domain.... this is dumb... they should try to steal Microsoft.com before Microsoft has a chance to renew it and see what happens... OK, I'm done ranting now. [N]F
  18. I'm happy... that one single popup was starting to annoy me on the index page (even though Firefox blocked it)... it was really bugging me how it would ALWAYS be there... now it's gone! [N]F
  19. I like Logitech... my Logitech wireless keyboard came with a wireless mouse, though I don't use it because I hate how it feels. So I use an el-cheapo mouse that came with an el-cheapo keyboard. Works great! It has lasted me 3 years now and I'm happy with it. I'd like a wireless, but all the "good" ones are out of my price range![N]F
  20. Well, lets see how well Vista is when SP1 comes out. I've been using Vista for a while and the only problems I have with it are Dreamweaver, Adobe Flash (just with Firefox, IE7 works no problems) and Apple Quicktime. Other than that, no problems. [N]F
  21. They look nice! Yeah, I have to agree with Brian. They should be standard sizes. Like 468x80, 88x21. I may have gotten those sizes wrong... double check me.[N]F
  22. Disclaimer from the site: I just came across this interesting tutorial. By now, everyone is familiar with Windows XP's product activation to ensure that only one copy of XP is used on one computer or whatever Microsoft has in their license agreement. Well, if you don't activate in 30 days, your computer is "locked" and you can't access your files. What are your options? Well from Microsoft and other sources: You're screwed. (That's in POLITE terms) Re-install Windows and lose all your documents and things. Install another OS. Talk to a Microsoft Licensing person... sometimes they're nice and will accept your story. Well, then I found this interesting tutorial. Since I think it is against your rights if Microsoft makes it impossible to get to your files (there are other ways), just disable product activation & grab your files. Burn them to CD or copy to a flash drive and then re-install XP. Yes, product activation is annoying, but you just have to go along with the flow. NOTE: I believe that if you don't have internet access (or very limited access like you're charged per minute and you get limited minutes), you can call Microsoft to activate. You'll speak with a Microsoft Licensing person and they'll give you a code to activate Windows. Anyways, here's the tutorial. Remember: I am NOT promoting piracy! Always pay for your software & activate it legally. Personally, I think activation is too harsh and should at least give you access to your files and the ability to transfer them off the machine. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ TO THE MODS/ADMINS: I'm sorry if you think this violates the TOS. It's only ment to help those to save files they really need from expired Windows. Microsoft cannot deny access to your files. That's like being locked out of your car simply because you didn't change the oil after 3000 miles... [N]F
  23. You know, if they have text ads on the pages then the following on the homepage could be considered false advertising: [N]F
  24. I'm working on a script where there is a custom user profile and I was wondering if there was a more efficient way to grab data stored in a database than this method: $sql = "SELECT * FROM users WHERE `access_name` = \"" .$active_user. "\"";$row = mysql_fetch_array(mysql_query($sql));//Link the two tables together; grab the most common thing that is the *SAME*$user_id = $row['id'];$sql2 = "SELECT * FROM content WHERE `cid` = \"" .$user_id. "\"";$row2 = mysql_fetch_array(mysql_query($sql2)); Then on the pages, I just do a <?php echo $row2['content']; ?> where ever something is supposed to be. Is this an efficient way? Thanks! I'm trying to "rust off" my PHP knowledge since it has been a while... I'm picking up on a project I quit on a while ago. [N]F
