  1. Shell is like a remote windows command prompt. but since linux has higher security than windows, you couldn't really do much damage. I use SSH to run a configuration script for a webmail client, for example, so it's more than just file uploading. In a nutshell, shell is like actually sitting at the server and using its terminal.[N]FShell is like a remote windows command prompt. but since linux has higher security than windows, you couldn't really do much damage. 2. their domain was created 8, July 1998 and doesn't expire until 9, July 2007... they are pretty old. But most web hosts from then have upgraded to modern day prices and packages... I'm sure in 98, 10 gigs of bandwidth was like today's 1000. Maybe less. It's possible they've ordered 9 years for their domain. Probably was expensive back then too... of course, I wouldn't know. Edit: oh yeah, in today's terms, their name could actually give them a bad reputation of being a terrable host! lol.. lame I know. [N]F
  3. I'm very sorry, OpaQue . If you need a break, please take one. I'm sure we'll manage. [N]F
  4. There's no reason to not have a firewall period. Regardless of operating system. Be it hardware based, software based, or both. Personally, I don't feel too secure unless I know I have two firewalls. Software & hardware (router). [N]F
  5. Well, be sure to state your reason as well. Shell access isn't something to just "hand out" like candy. [N]F
  6. lol, yeah... there's a few computers at school I wonder how they even managed to get XP on them. Well, I've gotten XP on a 333 MHz computer before... took like 3 hours. Anyway, LiveCDs are great for testing before install but are really slow. If you decide to DUAL BOOT, make sure Windows is on FIRST then partition your drive (I'd resize the Windows partition) and then install. [N]F
  7. web accelerators suck in general. they literally will eat your hard drive alive. Like "AOL's TopSpeed Technology"... basically, AOL wants to take credit for the old classic of File > Save. That's all these things are. Then if the site updates, like google news, you will keep seeing the old thing over and over. I HATE web accelerators and I advise people not to use them for that reason. I ALWAYS have them disable it, no matter what. [N]F
  8. Let me ask you something. Do you know anything about linux? I'm not trying to be rude, I'm trying to make a point. If you did, you'd know that Linux supports about every CPU architecture under the sun... Alpha, PPC, x86, and a whole lot more. If it's a computer, you can install Linux on it. Yes, even macs (power PC arch). Now, you have to realize that the software for each platform is coded specifically for that platform. A PPC arch version of linux won't work on an x86 architecture. Now to move on to another point. If you read the article in the first post, you'd understand why so many people use it. That's why Windows is widely used. Unless the Linux distro is Linspire or Xandros, linux does actually require you to know something. But the nice thing about Xandros and Linspire is that they are mostly idiot-proof for those Windows users who come to linux so they can be "cool". Now, not all computer illiterate people will just "phase out" as the article suggests. I have a reputation among my friends and even their families and also in organizations I'm involved in as being the "computer guy" or "tech wizard". I'm always explaining things. Like our new school building uses RFID technology and I had to explain to them that this is about as secure as secure gets for right now. You can't easily duplicate a RFID signal as you can a barcode and RFID won't get damaged by magnets such as magnetic strips. And today, I have to figure out why one person can't get online (possibly a bad modem is my guess) and another of why the computer won't play some games, etc (possibly spyware). [N]F
  9. The credit system is in place to keep people active at the forums. Without it, the community would slow and no one would really use it. Xisto uses this system so that ads do not have to be placed on member sites.[N]F
  10. What? I've never heard of an ISP blocking P2P traffic before. luckily, everything is open on my ISP's network. P2P, 80, oh it's all good! [N]F
  11. Time for an internet and Cpanel DNS lesson! A domain name is just Xisto.com. No www or anything like that. I don't feel the need to go further in depth on this topic so I'll move to how CPanel will add an addon domain and subdomain to an account. When you addon a domain, for example we'll use asta-rocks.com, all you're telling Cpanel to do is to update BIND to point asta-rocks.com to Xisto.com. Works just like adding a primary domain to your hosting account. Now, what CPanel also does is tell BIND to add the subdomain http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and asta-rocks.com to the DNS record. CPanel does this automatically. If you had access to the DNS record, or used a 3rd party free DNS host, you could modify this record up all you wanted. Instead of www, you could have ww, wwww, wwwwww, www1, www2, or whatever you want all point to the default location of asta-rocks.com. This would mean, ww.asta-rocks.com, w http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/, and so on, would all point to the main location of asta-rocks.com. Just like if you create a subdomain on your hosting account, by default, CPanel also adds a www DNS record for that subdomain. So, forums.asta-rocks.com could also be accessible via http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ because CPanel adds a www subdomain to the subdomain. If you want me to clear any of that up for you, please let me know and I'll gladly do so. [N]F
  12. As far as I know, AVG free can be updated off a local server if you configure it to do so. I use it because 1. Antivirus should be free... viruses are too wild on the net, 2. It's very good for free! It has some features even Norton doesn't have.[N]F
  13. I did this with some old drives... like the 800 MB drives! I turned one into a desk clock and I have to say, it looks cool! :DYeah, just be sure too look everywhere... they love to hide screws under stickers![N]F
  14. True, but an apple isn't a PC... it's not like there's three major OSes for PCs:-Window$ -Linux -Apple OS X All in all, an apple isn't a PC... unless at some time it was IBM compatible... [N]F
  15. Hey! Here are pictures of my system! Since I promised pictures, here they are! Enjoy! Now I need to explain what you're seeing in this shot: 1. PHP/MySQL book from which I'm getting assistance for a project 2. Breakfast 3. My php editor with some code that I'm working on 4. The User Interface of my project... hehe.. I took the liberty of blurring out the logo! It's a secret project for now... even my friends don't know much about it. 5. AVG Free scanning my external hard drive against viruses! And as you can see in the shots with my monitors, there's A LOT open on the task bars! (Note the second task bar on the right monitor). Enjoy, just don't eat up all my photobucket bandwidth! [N]F
  16. CORRECT WAY: Download non-copyrighted items, public domain items basically, or GNU/GPL stuff...INCORRECT WAY: Download music from artists, copyrighted things that are NOT free (e.g. pirated software) Now here's something that's funny. LimeWire posts "guidelines" to using P2P software safely. It's not LimeWire's fault their users are bad, they're trying to STOP IT. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Also the following text is on some pages of their website: [N]F
  17. phpbb is the equivelant of Windows. It's FILLED with security holes and the patches just bring more. hmm... sounds familiar...Use SMF. Or try a different flavor of board. MyBB, XMB, MercuryBoard... and the list goes on and on... don't be afraid to try something new![N]F
  18. Hey, just an update:I WILL be posting pictures soon, I just want to clean up my desk a bit. I'll try some pictures of my actual rig too, but lighting is terrible so I'll see what I can do!I'm really loving my monitors. Auto-adjust works perfectly, no dead pixels! [N]F
  19. I did this once back when I had dial-up. I set my computer as a proxy server and connected the other computers over the LAN to my computer. Of course, it was painfully slow, but it did work... Google manged to load in like 1 minute! [N]F
  20. I agree.. I too am an American and all I can say is that this country is the most pathetic country I've ever seen. Apparently money is our only concern. Throw a gum wrapper on the ground, pay a $250 fine, illegally park, pay a $500 fine... run a P2P service & get sued by the RIAA and MPAA. Oh, they can shut down LimeWire, eMule, and what not, but what is going to stop someone from ripping a CD, converting to MP3 format and uploading on the web, or sending in an email? This is america, a sue-happy nation united by money. If the RIAA & MPAA weren't so rich, I would hope they fail. They're a pain, more than they help. They just whine and complain about things being shared.. [N]F
  21. Actually, as soon as I install Firefox anywhere, I set the cache limit to 0 for this reason. Cache can be good sometimes, other times, it's worthless.unless you're on AOL, then all of it in general is worthless because they have a HUGE proxy farm![N]F
  22. haha... well I guess I'll be a good programmer soon but first I need to build my libraries of code![N]F
  23. Don't worry! I'll take some pictures! I'm currently waiting for the rest of my hardware to arrive (CPU, RAM, graphics card, hard drive, optical drive) minus the sound system which I some how forgot. Once the rest of it is in (should be either Wed. or Thursday), I'll get it built and post some pictures for you guys! It's nothing much... mostly a multitasking PC which is what I need! My laptop can't take all the stress I put on it since it is designed as a BUSINESS LAPTOP.... it's great for documents, spreadsheets, presentations.... and coding.... but that's about it. Oh, movies work well too. But you can only watch a movie without any system intensive programs (*cough* firefox *cough*) running else it will get laggy. [N]F
  24. grrr... now it is giving me Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_VARIABLE for line 18... guess which line that is as for the code, I'm assuming it is supposed to be like this: $sql = "SELECT * FROM users u JOIN content c WHERE `u`.`access_name` = \"" . $active_user. "\" AND `u`.`id` = `c`.`id`" I think that section just needs to be tweaked and then it should work... this script is really starting to get annoying and I'm tempted to put it all into one table... UPDATE: I GOT IT TO WORK!!! Well, I cheated... I took the semi-long-and-not-nearly-effective way to do it... here's what I did: $sql = "SELECT * FROM users WHERE `access_name` = \"" .$active_user. "\"";$row = mysql_fetch_array(mysql_query($sql));$user_id = $row['id'];$sql2 = "SELECT * FROM content WHERE `cid` = \"" .$user_id. "\"";$row2 = mysql_fetch_array(mysql_query($sql2));As you can see, since I called up one query which has the User ID number in it and then turned that number into a variable to link the two databases... now I can get on with my life. But still, I'd like to take the old code and get that to work. [N]F
  25. Nope, didn't work... it's still complaining about $row ... Visual reference of the $sql: SELECT * FROM users u JOIN content c WHERE `u`.`access_name` = `silly_george` AND `u`.`id` = `c`.`cid` It has a value... well, it's from the URL... my original code: // #############################################$active_user = $_GET['id'];// #############################################so basically, if there's a valid access name that comes after the ?id= in the URL, then fetch that user's content for their profile out of the content table. [N]F
