Hey, I'm helping my mom with one of her web projects for class and I've noticed a pretty big problem (no thanks to IE7) that cost her a few points. It won't load an image of an email icon, however, Firefox will load and display it properly. Here's the line for the image: <img src="nationalparks/images/email.gif" width="99" height="100" border="0" alt="Email" /> Also, IE7 complains about some ActiveX content, but this is just a basic page and NO JavaScript, NO Java applets, NO ActiveX of any kind! I've never seen anything as crazy as this! Wow... IE really sucks... anyone had a similar problem? [N]F

I was wondering if anyone here ever used (or uses) Asterisk? If you don't know what Asterisk is, it is a VoIP server (Voice over IP). Basically, it's like Vonage's servers in your home (beats the $24.99 month phone bill from Vonage, plus your local phone bill, plus internet bill). Anyways, nothing beats a POTS right? Well, features such as Voicemail, call forwarding, voice options (menus), etc can come with a price tag from your phone company. You already have copper phone lines coming into your house so why should you pay extra for these services when you can DIY? That's what Asterisk is! Currently, Asterisk runs on any Linux or BSD based OS (which means Mac OS X) but doesn't run to well on Windows so no Windows version has yet to be released. Or AsteriskNOW is where Asterisk packages are built right into a Linux distro (looks like it's RedHat based). Now, the difference between the two (Asterisk and AsteriskNOW) besides the built-in OS and no built-in OS is the GUI. AsteriskNOW comes with a web GUI (which only works with Firefox, ironically enough) and it's brother, Asterisk, is configuration file editing on the Asterisk PBX server. Another nice thing about Asterisk(NOW) is that home users can use any old computer that can at least run Linux to use as the PBX server. Larger entities such as companies will obviously have to use higher grade equipment to support more users, but all in all, it's pretty much the same software. I'm playing with AsteriskNOW on an old computer. Ok, now I'm missing something from the picture which is how to get the copper phone line to the ethernet. If anyone knows what this device is called, I'd much appreciate it. If you're thinking about getting VoIP, get Asterisk or AsteriskNOW because you'll still be using your copper telephone wires, but isn't it nice to know you can call forward, voicemail and all that other stuff for FREE? Oh yeah, you don't have to port your phone number over to another provider, such as Vonage, either. So it becomes much more simple! You can get AsteriskNOW at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (NOTE: The download is VERY slow! I have a 320Kbps line and I was downloading at 21K to 31K and the x86 ISO image is 420MB (about) so it may take 3-4 hours to download. You can get Asterisk at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Happy Telephony! [N]F

Hey,I'm using vista and I'm trying to connect to my mom's computer because it has the printer on it. There seems to be some odd issue between Vista and XP. Here's a basic scenario:1) I go to explorer and type in \\MBST005 which is my mom's computer, XP Media Center2) The shared docs/printers come up and I double click the printer that is shared and what everyone uses.3) I get "Access Denied"4) I try to open a shared folder and it works. I can save, open, create and delete files.Has ANYONE who uses a shared printer able to use vista to connect? Anyways, the next option is buying a "real" network printer (one with an ethernet card) so that way we can all connect using that method since I know it works 100% no problem. Thanks[N]F

If you haven't already heard of script.aculo.us, let me introduce you to it now! The user interface of your website is a very important tool. This site will give you some pretty cool AJAX code that you can integrate into your site. All the sample scripts are very cool and I highly suggest that you take a look at these open source AJAX scripts![N]F

Need To Merge Partitions

Thanks, that's OK though... replaced XP with Vista... not to many problems now! ;)I found out I can't run as much as XP, but that's OK. I'll just add another gig this summer. But I'll keep that on hand just in case! Actually, I might have my original 98 disk still in it's plastic [N]F -
Need To Merge Partitions
nightfox1405241487 replied to nightfox1405241487's topic in Websites and Web Designing
The only one that works is fixmbr except it doesn't boot! With my Windows XP CD in the drive, I see: Press any key to boot from CD....._Without the CD in the drive, all I see is: __ is the cursor. FIXMBR used to work in the past, because I remember doing it. I think what I might do is just save all my stuff and then re-install Windows (which I want to do anyways because it feels a little "off" for me). Time to find good old SuSE! At least it reconizes Windows and GRUB gives me a chance to boot into that... [N]F -
That is called MS screwing people over again! Especially since Beta 2 expires June 1, I think? Personally, I like Office 2003 better except that stupid side bar which I'm glad to see is FINALLY gone. Also, I've noticed that Word 2007 doesn't like to "save" your preferences. I hate the new default font and the template with the spaces. I TOLD Word to use the modified no spaces template with times as the default font. Nope.[N]F

Need To Merge Partitions
nightfox1405241487 replied to nightfox1405241487's topic in Websites and Web Designing
If that's easier than "merging" the partitions, then that works. Also, is there an easy way to remove grub? I tried using my XP setup disk > recovery console > "fixmbr" but then it wouldn't boot... I had to reinstall linux to get grub back on and then it booted fine and I could get into Windows again. [N]F -
Hey,I used to dual boot Linux & Windows on my main computer, however, I now have a dedicated box that I want to put Linux on. So, I want to merge the Linux partitions (formatted of course) into my Windows NTFS partition. I know Partition Magic can do this, but I don't have that kind of money to buy a license and was wondering if there was a freeware alternative? Thanks!![N]F

Cingular? What Is Going On?
nightfox1405241487 replied to sparkx's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Take it from a Cingular customer: ME. Repeat after me: "I do NOT want Cingular service. I understand their service will NOT work in areas it claims to and will drop calls despite what the ads claim." The iPhone thing is just to make more $$$ for Cingular. My 2 year contract expires this August with that worthless company (thank goodness) and before it does, I'm going to Verizon. Want to know something about Cingular? The same day they started their campaign, I had a dropped call!! Want to know something else? This summer, I was working as a Junior Technician for my school since we got a new high school, I was providing tech support. Anyways, in one of the classrooms on the first floor, I was standing right NEXT to a window and ZERO SERVICE. However, if I opened the window and stuck my phone out, FULL SERVICE. Cingular works, just not inside! If Verizon was going to carry iPhone, no problem. I'd say go for it. But this is the worst network on the face of the planet. Also, you notice how they say "leading independent research company" said Cingular had the fewest dropped calls? I still can't find nor get the company who did the research... in my head I think it was Cingular... Here's a line up of providers: ALLTEL: Doesn't work in all areas, but you could be 6 feet underground in a lead box and still make crystal clear calls. I think they still credit you for any dropped calls (though it's very unlikely) SPRINT/NEXTEL: Semi-good network, hardly any dropped calls. Carries phones that could pretty much survive anything (nextel phones) VERIZON: Best network & phones. As long as you don't go through the state of West Virginia (they have absolutely no service for any provider... your phone pretty much laughs at you) you could keep a call going cross-country. Also has National Broadband Access which I think you could tie into your plan. CINGULAR: Garbage, worst provider ever. Dropped calls, network hardly works where you need it to work. [N]F -
I'm sure by now everyone has heard of the Cisco Systems, Inc. vs. Apple Computer, Inc. for trademark infringement of "iPhone". This is a really childish case & waste of money, IMO. I believe it was said on the news that Cisco would have probably let Apple use the trademark had they asked. You'd think a company as old as Apple would have a legal department with some competence in it. It was Apple's responsibility to check trademarks before naming the product. I explained this case to someone like in a way like this: If I go and create a coffee brand called Starbucks, but sold different coffee flavours, either way, I'm still going to get my butt dragged to court for copyright/trademark infringement. Can I say that I didn't know "Starbucks" was already a registered trademark? NO! I should have checked beforehand but didn't. I have to side with Cisco on this one. Apple clearly broke the law. They never asked for permission to do it and Cisco deserves to sue Apple for whatever amount they please. If Apple would have asked, they probably would have gotten the thumbs up from Cisco to use it (of course, it would probably come with a royalty fee), but they chose to "steal" it. All Cisco is doing is protecting what is theirs. They have every right to. Maybe for once, Apple could re-name it, the Apple Phone. I'd say "Apple Talk" but that's a networking protocol for Macs to talk to Windows and Windows to talk to Macs. Edit Quote I found on Cisco's press release: Link to official press release: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ [N]F

Windows Time Problem!
nightfox1405241487 replied to nightfox1405241487's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I finally figured it out!! It's my Novell server's clock! I think the CMOS battery is going in it which is why my time was always off since I authenticate through Novell, it synced the time![N]F -
If Apple even has one functioning brain in the entire company, they better just pay Cisco right NOW just to get this over. I personally do not think Apple could take on Cisco in court... after all, Cisco has more money and lawyers and has a pretty dominate role in the world. Apple failed to properly do their homework so they are paying the consequences. personally, the "Apple Phone Device" and AppleTV is dumb. Why isn't RedHat coming out with a Fedora Powered phone? or "FedoraTV"? The idea is impractical. That's why. [N]F

Ok, I just had to do it. My (quick) review on MySpace. From a technical standpoint:I have never seen a network that is so poorly designed that the "load balancing" doesn't even work. I can't tell you countless number of times where I've been directed to down servers or VERY overloaded servers. Sometimes, I'll get stuck in a loop of overloaded server or down servers. I thought load balancing was supposed to AVOID this? It's also poorly coded. Have you ever watched your system use more CPU power to load a really overloaded profile?? Next is the errors. I don't know the cause for the errors, but it is far fetched. From end user standpoint:The interface is.... not usable. Ever try to log off and notice there is no logout link or the link has moved for the 5th time in that DAY?From a stalker standpoint: Best website ever! I think even PRIVATE profiles can be viewed via Google's Cache. Nice going, Tom... treat a search bot as a "friend".Personally, News Corp. only cares about $$$$ from MySpace... Customer Service doesn't even take notice to anything bad or offensive on public areas. They simply could care less.[N]F

Haha... I think Skype feels threatened by AIM Phoneline which AOL released for the same price. The only difference is AIM Phoneline will let you receive calls & give you a number for FREE while Skype charges for that. AIM Phoneline costs $14.95 for UNLIMITED calls and whatnot but at least you get a number for free.[N]F

MS Windows CSRSS Vulnerability
nightfox1405241487 replied to ne0's topic in Security issues & Exploits
Dude, it's M$... of course it's probably affected by x64 versions. What I find funny is that this venerability has been around since Win2K and has spread into some builds of Vista! Who really believes that Vista is a complete re-write? [N]F
