  1. I first saw it on Digg before he was executed... I was at school helping with our annual web broadcast of our wrestling tournament and we had some downtime so we went on Digg.. I saw it and was like, "holy cow! guys, look at this!"There's also a graphic video someone shot with a cell phone floating around You Tube and Google Videos. It's pretty graphic, not for anyone with a weak stomach. It's not the official video, but if you were making a time capsule, it's good enough to go in there.Personally, imo, I think he got what he deserved, of course it was too late. As soon as they found him quivering in his hole they should have shot him. I know that Iraq is trying to be a democracy just like the US only because the US went in there and forced them to make a democracy. But in case anyone didn't notice, Iraq is NOT a duplicate of the US government and it never will be. I think the US should butt out of other countries' problems and let them work it out on their own. Just MHO.[N]F
  2. Ah, I see. I asked because I have a site on a server that got taken offline because of a fake bank site and I'd like some of my traffic to know what is going on by directing them to a different server.[N]F
  3. Hey,I'm not sure the technical term, but you know how domains have primary and secondary name servers? Well, I know that when you go to a domain, it queries NS1.ASTAHOST.COM (for example if you were hosted here) and if NS1 is down, it goes to NS2. Well, what I have a web server running on my network and what I'd like to do is have it setup with a "Site Temporarily Down" message and then if the server goes down for example.com, NS1 & NS2 also go down, have it redirect to a third DNS server to redirect it to the server on my network with the "Site Down" message. How do I do this? Thanks!I'm not sure where this belonged, but please move it if you feel it belongs somewhere else! [N]F
  4. 5 years ago... going to be 6 soon. Anyways, I work a lot with the IT industry and my school's IT department had a goal to get every computer running WinXP. Nope, never happened. We still have 9X machines still being used in the classrooms (high school is completely running XP, exception is our thin client lab which is running stripped down version of 98 which is used to connect to the Windows terminal server, middle/junior high school is 20% 9X with newer machines replacing the older ones, intermediate school is 80% 9X with the exception of teacher computers which are new/refurb Dells with XP, and our lower grade level buildings are 98% 9X with 1 Dell per classroom with XP). We do not have any 2K machines, ME machines, or NT machines. The sad thing is, we still have 11 year-old operating systems and 11 year-old computers still in production use and still being maintained. However, each summer we might get a good deal from Dell and order a few hundred machines. Point being, most places will continue running a mixed environment of 9X, XP and Vista, like my school. Some places will experience XP/Vista environments only. It really depends on how often the place upgrades equipment. Oh, and in case anyone here doesn't belive xboxrulz, please watch this video on Google: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ [N]F
  5. I remember when I found a REALLY early version of 3.0 called "Deer Park" I think it was called. It looked a lot like version 1.0 with features of 2.0.[N]F
  6. Ok, I personally HATE MS updates and feel they add more security holes than the system already has so I disable ALL updates. EVERYTHING. I rarely update Windows, but I do it like every two months or so.Anyways, my computer needs to be left online because I am constantly accessing it from all over. Well, one day I come home to find it booted into Linux since I dual boot. When I got back into Windows, a window said that Windows updated.I think this is illegal. MS shouldn't be allowed to do that when you ask them not to. That's like having a telemarketer always call you, you tell them don't call me again and then they still call you. This is really dumb and I'm about to get on the phone with MS about this. It's absurd. Anyone know of any registry hacks or any firewall rules I can create to block this? Thanks![N]F
  7. No. Windows also refuses to automatically check to see if it's online to update the time with a time server. And I've found the government time server to have a lighter load than MS's server.[N]F
  8. I think it is 1-800-MICROSOFT. Anyways, their main hotline should direct you to the activation department. Don't worry. From what I have heard, the activation staff are usually understanding and will give you an over-ride key or something. [N]F
  9. To be honest, there are still people out there using five+ years old software (Windows 2K, ME (the lucky ones), and even 9X... actually, I've seen a few places where NT 4.0 Workstation and NT 4.0 Server were still being used in production). Most places will NEVER upgrade. Why? Personally, cost is an issue. Have you not seen the upgrade cost from XP to Vista? You could buy a full copy of XP for the price! This will probably be a time for Linux to start taking over. It isn't impossible. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if WINE started evolving and running Windows applications to the point where Linux was like Windows. KDE already can be very customized to feel like Windows so it isn't impossible. The only major improvement I'd like Linux to have is support for more hardware. It's like half the hardware I have isn't compatible with Linux (for some reason, it's ALWAYS my sound) and 1 in 4 my NIC isn't supported (usually happens with SuSE) or nothing is compatible (RedHat, but RedHat 9 is old anyways). When Linux becomes more "plug & play", then it will really dominate the market. After all, Windows has built in support for THOUSANDS of devices. If I had some knowledge, I'd program my own Linux OS to be a bit like Windows. When you think about it, the real problem lies at the end user. Most switching over to Linux aren't used to half the Linux things that are needed. Like using the terminal to download software instead of downloading an EXE and having the progam install without wizards. So to say Vista is the last major release, don't expect everyone to flock over to Linux. It won't happen unless Linux becomes more like Windows in a way. Something hardcore Linux users don't want but would need to happen in order for more people to use it.[N]F
  10. Tell Microsoft to include a PDF maker with Office OpenOffice.org is awesome because it actually includes that feature. The only thing wrong with OpenOffice is the GUI. [N]F
  11. Amen to that!! Doesn't have to be "open" source... take IPB. Not open source, but the source code is available for modifications! [N]F
  12. I didn't install any of the "useless" stuff... just the core things a gateway needs: proxy, content filter, DNS, etc. Besides clark eating up all the physical RAM and refusing to use the swap (nothing was used on swap.. by nothing I mean absolutely nothing, 0 KB) and content filtering really slowing down loading times, it wasn't too bad. [N]F
  13. Yeah, like I read somewhere a while back they tried to do the same thing with Red Hat. Except Red Hat being smart told MS "No."[N]F
  14. Hey Guys!I was looking around for a replacement router for my linksys since she likes to disconnect whenever I get a phone call on my land line. Anyways, I also wanted better content filtering and website blocking (the one built into the Linksys firmware doesn't even work and you're restricted on the numbers and it's really dumb). Well, my next problem, was finding one that worked as a gateway too. My DSL is PPPoE, which requires authentication by my ISP's RADIUS server. That was always a problem. But then I found ClarkConnect!ClarkConnect is based off of Red Hat and it includes all sorts of cool goodies! The free version, Community Edition, limits some functions such as the number of email accounts you can have if you choose to also use your gateway as a mail server. It has a pretty good firewall and DHCP and the web based admin interface is something I've been dreaming that Linksys would have. It's the dream interface! The proxy is Squid, naturally, and the content filter is Dan's Guardian which is pretty good. I have the proxy setup as an invisible proxy so I don't have to change any settings and my parents won't notice (until they try to go after a blocked site!)If you're going to run it on a larger network, a better server is suggested. I'm currently running it on a PIII 900MHz computer with 512 MB of RAM. Also, if you're going to run in Gateway mode, two NICs are required! Since you don't know which one is going to go to your local network and which one faces the Internet, I left one NIC unplugged and then installed Clark. Then, once it was setup, I just plugged in my modem and reboot the modem and it connected no problem.I highly recommend! Now I can use my trouble causing router as a regular switch now [N]F
  15. Not that many security holes... when you're releasing 1 or even 2 build PER MONTH something is up. I was once on the phpBB mailing list and removed myself because of all the security notices that was flooding my inbox. If it was coded in a different manner, it would be excellent software. I just think it is better to go with software that has a better reputation of being secure. Nothing is 100% secure, duh. Pretty much everyone knows that. Somethings are just more secure than others. Like Linux vs. Windows. When I boot into Linux, getting plagued with viruses is the last thing on my mind. Anyways, as Xbox said, I think this time they were focusing more on security. We'll just see when it goes stable! [N]F
  16. I laugh when MS says that Vista is the most secure OS yet. Isn't that what every OS producer says? Like if I make NightFoxOS, I'm going to claim that it is most secure and stable...even though you have to check for updates everyday and get hacked everytime you go online. MS said that 9x/2K/XP were the most secure when they came out. I don't think MS can say things like that without actually making the product available to the public. Also, a while back, I heard that MS decided to promote AVG free in Control Panel and to "weaken" the OS a bit because Symantec, McAfee, and Grisoft (maker of AVG) were complaining there would be no reason for their software and that MS was basically putting them out of business.[N]F
  17. Ummm... well, has anyone actually tested phpBB3 for any huge security holes yet? Just because something looks good doesn't mean it is secure! Anyways, I'll stick with SMF/XMB. [N]F
  18. As stated by vujsa: I don't know how many accounts are being transfered over but I would have thought they would have been done by now. Just try to manage your files here and there and maybe find times that accounts aren't being transfered. Or if they're done, I'm sure an admin will let us know of any problems. [N]F
  19. I haven't worked with cpanel too much but I tried googling 4usersmin and it brought back 0 results. I'm guessing it is nothing to really worry about. I'd say it would be 4 users logged into the server, but that wouldn't make much sense. [N]F
  20. You guys could try getting Xisto to update MySQL on the server to a 4.1.X version if it is secure and stable enough (in their opinion of course). Just ask at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (follow the instructions there since they've been having spam problems). [N]F
  21. McAfee is the cause of all problems... it's far worse than Norton Internet Security. NIS just holds grudges against the local network (it doesn't even allow a Novell client to login to a server on the local network). But from what I've heard about McAfee, it is garbage. And of course, 99.9% of all network problems I encounter are software problems (e.g. Windows or security software). [N]F
  22. Hey,Does anyone know of some free Cisco network simulation software? I have Packet Tracer 3.2 from Cisco and it is "ok" but not the best. I was wondering if there was better software.Even if it isn't free, I'm still interested in looking. It's gotta be a lot cheaper than buying a Cisco router and some Cisco switches! :PThanks![N]F
  23. Hahaha!!! Nah, unlike Win9X/ME, XP is the first non-DOS based OS. NT is a powerful core and XP is just simply the best. I love their marketing and how it is all "Windows Vista is the best OS to date!" Yeah, well when Windows 1.0 came out the same thing was said about it. I swear that when MS announces the date they they officially "unsupport" XP, everyone is going to complain like they did with 9X/ME to get the date extended. I don't think anyone will let XP fall "unsupported". [N]F
  24. Not really.. it depends. Beta 2, RC1 and RC2 CAN be downloaded and used LEGALLY if you previosly got a LEGAL serial from MS which is valid for activating 10 computers (which is really more than enough and each email got up to 2 serials I think, which is 20 computers.) If you seriously need a LEGAL serial, I think I have a few extras I'll NEVER use. Piracy is wrong. And seriously, if you don't know how to use peer-to-peer, you're in the wrong place! Anywho, back on subject. Vista, IMO, is a load of over-priced garbage. It's XP on steroids. All the junk they put in Vista could have been in XP SP3. Also, it's a RAM eater. It won't run on my laptop (AMD XP-M, 1.8 GHz, 512 MB RAM) real well and uses more memory than it needs. If you just want the looks of Vista, find a Vista theme pack. It'll save you disk and RAM. Another thing, EVERYTHING has moved (well, except for the taskbar) but the start menu is different, My Computer is now "Computer", Control Panel opens everything in it's own Window now, the default icon size (on the desktop) is HUGE (like we're all blind and can't see icons, it would have just made more sense to set the default resolution to 600x800). Also, MS has seriously hurt the Information Security industry. You know, Symantec, Grisoft, McAfee, etc. Actually, AVG will now be promoted through the Control Panel for security because of some company interaction. Vista is secure (for now) but there is probably some huge gaping hole in the software waiting to be discovered. Trust me, any computer made before Vista is released, should continue to run Windows XP or lower. So if you bought a computer with one of those "Vista Capable" stickers on it, DO NOT run Vista! The version of Vista you'll be able to run is Home Basic or Home Premium. Not worth it, both these editions aren't very special. See the editions listed on the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista My main computer *might* be able to take Vista well, my laptop will stay with XP as it runs it perfectly. Well, I could run Vista but I wouldn't be able to watch DVDs (it REFUSES to use virtual memory. It much prefers physical memory). Just my rather long rant on Vista. Trust me, you don't want it. Vista is like sugar & color coated spinach. [N]F
