  1. Definately Google. Even though I despise them, there's noe scaping the fact that it's the fastest out there.
  2. I downloaded the Panther skin he linked to; I'm not using a skinning program. What program do I need for .msstyles?
  3. Um, I tried installing just the skin (nothing else, I don't wanna gobble up my RAM), but XP wants .Theme files, not .msstyles. What's going on? Do I need some sort of skinning program? >_<
  4. My dad has an old Dell paperweight running Windows 98 that he uses for work. He may be getting a new comp soon, so I'm considering possibly getting it and installing MEPIS on it. The processor is only a 433 MHz Celeron, and the hard drive is only six gigs, but the RAM is something like 310 megabytes, so I could possibly use it for testing Java software I write in Windows. So, I'm curious: does anyone have similar setups running MEPIS (or any Linux distro for that matter), and if so, what does it run like? Any help is appreciated.
  5. Yeah, they're kinda kewl...but two things: 1) It's $90, and 2) I really just prefer the look of plastic or synthetic fabric.
  6. I guess he didn't even click the link, just read the topic title, and maybe my first post.... Shadow X, XBox Linux is a project by some Linux fans that allows you to run Linux on an XBox. It's not a new XBox version coming out with the 360.
  7. I say use Linux on a game machine. After all, it's much cheaper than a computer. You just need some XBox-to-USB cables... Anyway, Guy, it would void your warranty, but I doubt it'd be illegal...and besides, one of the methods allows you to replace the IDE drives.
  8. Is anyone else interested in XBox Linux? Personally, I love the idea. Just need an XBox, which should go down in price soon now that the 360s are coming out, and MechAssault, and I can have a Linux machine.
  9. What Antivirus software, antispyware software, and firewall do you use?I currently use AVG Free, Spybot: Search & Destroy, and Windows Firewall. [/color]
  10. Eh. I probably wouldn't do that, being a security/privacy freak and all. I'd keep all my stuff safe on a hard drive or two.
  11. Hey, that's pretty cool...I'd definately do something like that to same some dough.
  12. Yeah, I mean, a couple eyars ago there was an article in Popular Mechanics about Japanese USB devices...they even had USB toothbrushes, tea brewers and noodle strainers! Anyway, back on-topic....yeah, the web has really proliferated lately. I've also hear about WiMax, long-range WiFi. You could potentially control appliances at your home from your car or office.
  13. Ooh!!! I'm a Lego fan, so yeah, I think this pwnz. BTW, a lot of adults do play with Legos.
  14. I can see the advantage of having a stable Windows version. You'd be able to play all the hot games and stuff. But seriously...why not just get Linux?
  15. Yup, that's what I mean. You just need to buy a case for the hard drive, adn hey usually come with USB and power outlets, although some smaller laptop drives can draw power from the USB connection.
  16. Just curious: has anyone else heard of do-it-yourself external hard drives? I saw an article about making them in Popular Mechanics, and I'm seriously interested in doing it. Much cheaper than buying a ready-made one.
  17. This idea with the repairs from computer shops looks nice...I dunno if the place I got my PC would do this (it's a chain), but there is at least one smaller place in town that's much closer that could possibly go for it.
  18. Lately, I've been considering building custom system for people to make some cash. However, I'm wondering about after-purchase support for custom builders. Does anyone here build systems for people, and if so, what kind of support or warranty do you provide? Any help is appreciated.
  19. As punishment for crimes, I really don't get it. It's actually the easy way out; with life in prison, the person will have to think about what they've done for the rest of their life. Much worse.
  20. I really don't know about the iDisk....back when I got my trial with my iMac, the only thing you retained if you didn't sign up was the ability to use your .Mac email address as an AIM screenname.
  21. Well, Apache web server is built-in, and it's what's activated when you turn on web sharing. However, you will need to download PHP and MySQL if you want them. Also, I hear that only you can view your site if you have a dynamic IP... >_<
  22. Could be dust. Dry getting a canned of compressed air and spray the dust away...another tip Popular Mechanics offered was to make a filter for your fan(s) out of panty hose.
  23. Well, when I was using Norton, I would constantly get message that Windows Messenger had been trying to access stuff (luckily, Norton blocked it). Well, when I switched to AVG after my update subscription ran out, I realized that regular antivirus wouldn't take care of spyware. So, does anyone know of free antispyware utilities?
  24. Six out of ten. I guess not THAT bad...I was expecting to see Martin Golding, one of the Sun Microsystems guys who developed Java.
