  1. Different countries have their own ways to run their own countries. They are similar, but there are differences. When new stuff comes from a foreign country, it might create some issues with the existing systems in the country. And, the issues need resolved; it may take some time and efforts. When issues are found, they are quickly captured by the media, which may cause a great deal of attention. Google is pulling out of China ... India may ban GMail, Skype and Blackberry ...Goolge stopped the China service (.cn). It re-routes search requests to its Hong Kong service (.hk). And, one can still use other Google services (.com, .ca ...) from within China. In other words, one can still access numerous Google sites (except the .cn site) from within China. If all those that request .cn follow the re-route to use .hk. Then, .hk is going to be .cn. In the end, Hong Kongers will in effect lose .hk because there are so many surfers from within China than from Hong Kong. It doesn't seem to make a lot of a difference. But, the news attracted a lot of eyeballs. Most likely China and Google will work things out over time.Probably, the same is going to happen for the India - GMail/Skype/Blackberry deal?
  2. McDonald's is in the business to make money. A lot of people like to eat its fast food. Weight gain is an unfortunate effect for most people eating fast food. It takes time and effort to exercise to deal with the weight gain. I guess we should come up with a way to stop weight gain as a result of over-eating. For example, if human body doesn't digest the food as much ...
  3. Global warming - is it a scam or not? I read some of the posts here and am now clueless. This whole thing about global warming is very confusing to laymen. We don't get to see the whole picture or a scaled-down version of it. Let's hope it's a scam. That way, although we are wasting a lot of resources on the issue, the world will remain to be the same many many years later.
  4. I have a laptop made by Dell. I have used it for about three years. A few days ago, it quit connecting to the internet through the ethernet cable. It would show either that network cable not inserted properly or that the connection speed is 10 Mbps. You wouldn't be able to go anywhere on the internet. It would do that even if another computer could be connected to the internet through the same cable. The above happened in my home also. It wouldn't work if it is connected in any of the room (downstream the router in the house). The weird thing is it would work well if it is connected to the main cable coming into the house (upstream the router)! The wireless connection still works fine. I also scanned the laptop for viruses. What is the cause of the problem? Can someone help me to solve the problem? Do I need to bring it to a repair shop?
  5. Thanks for the warning. It seems that I don't get to visit those sites often. In other words, I don't seem to see things like "earn 50 bucks a day doing whatever ..." on the internet. I never had the idea that you can make a meaningful amount of money by simply surfing the internet. If I ever see that kind of stuff, I will be cautious. Well, you know that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. So, be very careful; don't be tricked into doing something silly. Internet has a lot of resources, most of them very useful. If you simply surf the internet, use it to find whatever you need to find, but don't try to make a meaningful amount of money doing that alone.Take care!
  6. I did follow the link in the first post and read the news story. It is carried on Sydney Morning Herald's website. I also noted that the story has a date in 2006. It is old news now. But, it is an interesting piece of news. First of all, I don't know for sure how reliable the news story is - a 9 year-old girl ... from a tribe ... in Amazon rainforest in Brazil ... giving birth to a baby ... reported in the news from Australia. How reliable is the communication between the Brazil city and Sydney? Was it also in the news in Brazil? Didn't it become an important piece of news in Brazil? Sorry I have some doubts about the reliability of the news story. Is a 9 year-old girl physically able or mature enough to become pregnant and give birth to a baby? Nine year-old seems to be too young an age. What is acceptable or not acceptable in the tribe in the Amazon rainforest? The 9 year-old girl probably didn't know what rape meant. Who would raise the baby? Is the 9 year-old girl mentally suitable to raise the baby?
  7. Interesting topic and interesting post. It even includes links about the history of plumbing. I am sure knowing what people did many years ago with plumbing will offer insightful thoughts to help some today?s plumbing headaches. I wish I had the opportunity to look at a post like this when I had my plumbing headache. I bought my house new. The front yard of the house was on a slope. My main sewage pipe ran underneath this slope to the city sewage system. Anyway, there was this sewage problem. At first, we could hear loud noise when flushing a toilet and when the washer dumped water to the system. We had no idea what the noises meant as we had had no such experience before. Not longer after that, we started to notice that sewage would come up from the system; it got into a bath tub! So, it was fun to clean up!The sewage would show up in the house and, after a while, would disappear. Anyway, to make a long story short, the sewage pipe was partially blocked by something underneath the front yard. Toilet paper would accumulate in that partially blocked section and would block the system at some point. But, the toilet paper could handle only so much load. As more sewage accumulated on top of the paper and as the toilet paper was soaked in the sewage water, it would weaken and eventually broke. So, the sewage would periodically show up in the house and would suddenly go away with a big banning noise.Anyway, that was a lot of fun. One needed good luck to resolve a problem like that with relatively low cost or small amount of work if you would do it on your own. And, indeed, one would need to wish him/herself happy plumbing no matter what.
  8. Is human evolution stopping? I wanted to first ask myself whether the theory of evolution was true. I don't know much detail about the theory, but it seems that it has to be true. So I agree that we can assume the theory of evolution is true.If that is the case, then it seems to me that human evolution is not stopping; actually, nothing is stopping its evolution. Because if evolution did begin, it must have begun from the very beginning, it must have been going on all the time albeit very slowly, and it must continue in the future. Everything changes in the world. The enviroment changes. Animals change over time from one generation to the next. Humans have to adjust themselves to the changing world. That is why human evolution is not stopping. As humans invent more and more new products and improve productivity, we live in better and more sophisticated lodgings, use better and more sophisticated transportation equipment, eat better and more sophisticated food, and so on ... We have the tendency to rely more on certain capabilities and less on some other capabilities. That is why human evolution is going to continue.
  9. I was not sure I had had a crispy egg before. So I gave it a try according to your instructions. I picked a nice, little pan to fry the egg and put quite some oil in it. I made sure that there was enough oil in the pan to completely cover the egg after I put the egg in. I then started to heat up the oil. After quite a while, the oil started to burn; i.e., it started to create some smoke from its surface. At that point, I was not sure whether the oil was hot enough. So I waited for another couple of minutes. The oil was burning hot, but it was not boiling as instructed. I figured it must be hot enough. I then cracked a fresh egg and put it in the pan. I did not put anything else in the pan as instructed.Once I put the egg in, some more black smoke came out of the pan. I simply let the egg deep fry itself. Actions in the pan were somewhat violent. I made sure that no oil droplets would hit my skin. It was somewhat scary to watch. So I cover the pan with a lid for a minute and then stopped heating the pan. The covered pan kept sizzling for a couple of minutes before I thought I should take the egg out. The egg turned out to be pretty much black at the bottom, but the top looks normal. I used some salt and tried to eat it. The edge was burnt and did not taste good. It was OK to eat. But, not much of the egg was crispy. I was puzzled. What did I do wrong? Please help. I want to try it again to make a crispy egg.
  10. Hello. I have to say that this is an interesting topic. Before you contact anyone to apply for admission to any Chinese school, you may want to do a little research on your own. I would recommend going to this website: http://www.study-in-china.org/. It seems to be a reasonably good site discussing studying in China. You can choose among seven different languages - Chinese, English, French, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. It gives you general information about studying in China, e.g., what it takes to go through a four-year college, what it takes to obtain a master's degree, how to prepare yourself with Chinese language, and how much it will cost. It also shows you how to apply to schools of your choice, how to obtain the visa, and so on. It is a good site. Check it out!
  11. Boy, he is so young and still has a long long way to go the rest of his life. He doesn't know enough about what is out there yet. Life is a long journey. His happiness may be only temperary. There are a lot of other things he may find enjoying. He needs to explore some more before making up his mind.Happiness is only one of the goals of human life, in my opinion. What is more important is personal satisfaction, feeling of achievement, or making contributions to mankind and to the society. If others recognize your contributions, money will likely come with it. Sometimes, it is not money that comes with it. In that case, your name is recognized in one way or another. That is a different type of satisfaction. So, the best way is to live a life that has both happiness and money or some money plus a good name.Today, going to college probably has a good probability to help you build a successful career and make good contributions. It is a very good choice for a young fellow like him. It will help him open his eyes wider. He will have a better chance to find both happiness and money. That would be my opinion. The bottom line is one should attempt to both make contributions and make money. That is happier than happiness alone.
  12. Polish President Lech Kaczynski's plane crashed on April 10, 2010 in Russia. It killed the President, his wife and over 80 others on board the aircraft. It is reported that the Tupolev-154 apparently hit trees in thick fog as it attempted to land at the airport of Smolensk, west of Moscow. What has really happened? What has caused the crash? Was it because of pilot's human error in the bad weather? Was there any other reason? What would be the impact of the tragedy? How can we prevent something like this from happening again? What should we do in the future to minimize the impact of a tragedy like this?
  13. Do you like Apple's new product, the iPad? Why do you like it or dislike it? What are the features that you like the best? What is it that you do not like? Do you think iPad is worth the price? Why or why not?Do you think iPad will be a very successful product like iPod and iPhone? Why or why not? Would you recommend iPad to your friends?
  14. Do you think the new law that has just been enacted for the US health care reform is going to help the country or hurt it? Why?
  15. Let me think...I want to say that my favorite sport is basketball. I do not like soccer too much because one needs a lot of patience - similar to fishing or investing for the long run. It takes a long time to score. I do not like volleyball as much because the two teams are always separated. The competition seems to be mild. I do not like baseball so much because I simply have not learnt about that sport enough. I do not understand it. I do not know why a lot of people love that sport. The bottom line is I know a little bit of everything (not literally though), but I am not great with any of them.
  16. I get the sense that Nike is a more popular brand than Adidas. I do not know whether that has to do with where I have been or not. Somebody tell me if I am wrong. I am talking about shoes. It seems Nike shoes sell at significantly higher prices than Adidas shoes do. People would pay more for Nike shoes than Adidas shoes. Then, I also get the sense that Adidas sells more merchandise other than shoes than Nike does. It seems Nike focused on shoes and only started to get into a wide range of other products not very long ago while Adidas probably is an older brand and the brand sells a lot more on products other than shoes.A question. Which country is the origin of the Adidas brand? I believe United States is the origin of the Nike brand. Maybe I will find out on the internet.
  17. Is it possible to destroy the internet? I think it is a very interesting question. It could lead to a big movie for Hollywood. Just start from the question and imagine what can be done to destroy the internet, what if a big part of it is indeed destroyed, what the consequences are, how would it be restored, what happens afterwards ... ?I think it is a perfect lead to a great movie! I hope someone is reading or some people are already planning to make a movie. I am looking forward to watching it.Coming back to the question itself, I would not think it is impossible to destroy it. So I have to assume that it is possible to destroy the internet.I do not want to discuss how it might be destroyed. I think we ought to discuss how to prevent it from being destroyed. Where would the attacks come from? What are the possible points of attacks? What would be the potential consequences of a massive attack? How would we minimize the consequences of a massive attack?I would guess that the probability to destroy a large part of internet is very small and the potential consequences are also relatively small compared to scenarioes like losing power, losing the telephone/mobil phone systems, ...
  18. I think the recession we are talking about is often called great recession. That is probably the best term to describe it. When is the great recession going to end? I believe it has already ended. It is simply that the end has not been officially announced. The great recession started in December, 2007. Its start was not officially recognized until about a year later if memory serves me correctly. So it has been more than two years since it began. As far as I can tell, the world economy has been improving for at least several months. When the economy stops contraction and starts a sustained expansion, the recession ends. It may take quite some time to reach where it was when a recession started, but beginning of the expansion means end of the recession. Employment lags behind the general economy. So jobs will not come back very quickly at the beginning of the expansion.Banks that suffered a great deal during the great recession tried to use whatever they could to survive. They probably had quite some resources to fight the recession. But, in the end, they may not survive long enough to get sufficient help from a recovering economy and eventually fail when the economy has already started to improve. In other words, bank failures also lag the general economy. If you think about it, not many of them failed when the great recession first started. So don't be fooled by the lagging effects of the recession. Now, how strong the recovery will be and how long it is going to last are not so certain. At this point, my guess is that the probability of having a double dip is fairly small. I think economies like China's have a greater chance to pull the world economy into another dip since they were boosted so strongly by their governments.
  19. Do you believe there can be more than one universe? No - that's how I voted. And that is my opinion. I don't really know the answer to the question. When negative numbers were first introduced, a lot of people didn't believe that was correct and most people would have voted no at the time if there had been polled. So I could be in the wrong camp. I am not sure it is smart to be in the "no" camp. But I would wait for more facts to suggest that there is more than one universe to show up before changing my opinion.I understand the logic behind particle - antiparticle and universe - antiuniverse. I tend to think that simply extending that logic to the universe (uni = 1) is highly risky. Universe is supposed to include everything by definition. I don't understand the physics related to this topic enough. I was told many years ago that Einstein suggests that everything in our universe moves no faster than light does while everything in the antiuniverse moves no slower than light does. I think it's a highly risky suggestion. Being a layman for the physics, I doubt that light is the fastest in our universe, I doubt that people can time travel, ...Maybe I am totally wrong or have been ignorant. But I think what we know is that we haven't found anything that moves faster than light does. We don't know that nothing can ever go faster than light does. Saying light is the fastest is experience-based is just like the Newton physics is experience-based - and only works at low speeds. I don't know for sure that Einstein physics is absolultely correct. In fact, I have read somewhere that another physicist has written a book about a different physics that can explain more phenomena than Einstein physics does. Any part of the Einstein physics that has not been proven is not necessarily correct.Similarly, I am not sure time travel can happen. If you can go faster than light does, you should be able to view what has happened in the past. But it seems to me that one cannot go back in time to participate in activities that have already happened in the past. I believe that is a big distinction. You might be able to view what has happened, but you cannot take part in it or influence what would actually happen. That said, it is good to keep in mind that another universe might be reality, esp. if you conduct research in the area. I don't believe it does exist until more evidence shows up.
  20. OK. Very interesting! I personally have never heard things like negative calorie foods, empty calorie foods, and so on. By going through some of the replies above, it seems to me that it is real; i.e., those fruits and vegetables burn more calories than they generate indeed. I would think this is new to a lot of people if not most people. Rather than making everyone who reads this thread to do his/her own research, I would suggest posting additional information to substantiate what you claim. That way readers of this thread won't simply be surprised; they hopefully will get the idea that fruits and vegetables are net calorie-burning foods. My personal experience tells me that, for weight control, genes are very important, amount of food intake is very important, and balanced diet is very important. Some people are over weight no matter how little they eat. Some people are under weight no matter how much they eat. What they eat doesn't matter either. If you are in either of the above groups, you are either very lucky or very unlucky. If you are in the "average" group, then you should worry about how much you eat and what you eat from pure weight control perspective.
  21. Your story tells me that he does like you. That is also why you have such a long story to tell or type. You have kept a long list of things that have caught your attention. Those were no coincidences. You should believe at least most of your feelings or observations. So I think he does like you. That said. I think there is something that is holding him back. That is why he did not go out with you when you asked him to. That is why he looked at you, paid attention to you, and did all this and all that without talking to you much or asking you out. For some reason, he wanted to keep some distance between you and him. You may want to find out why he is holding back somewhat. Or you may want to stay around him more often so the two of you become closer. Maybe he is simply shy! Who knows? If that is the case, do you still like him? Good luck!
  22. Hi. Let's first assume you want to spend roughly the same amount of time studying and finish in 4 years. In that case, you can probably have a major in one of the engineering disciplines and a minor in one of the business areas. You could also choose to major in business and have a minor in engineering if you wish. Those are your options to combine 2 fields. Under the above assumption, there is no way you can have a combination of 2 majors simply because a bachelor's degree requires roughly 4 years of study. You are not allowed to obtain 2 bachelor's degrees in 4 years with regular amount of study. Two majors, to me, mean two degrees. To get there, you either have to spend more time studying within the four years or stay longer in school. You have a few options. One of them is to pursue a bachelor's degree and then a masters' degree in business. A lot of students would prefer to obtain the bachelor's degree first, work in the real world for 2 or more years, and then pursue a master's degree in business. Another option is to obtain 2 bachelor's degrees in about 5 years, one in engineering and the other in business.
  23. Well, the first time when the US invaded Iraq, Former US President George Bush chose not to move the troops into Baghdad. It allowed Saddam Hussein to stay in power. Right before the second invasion, Geroge W Bush was the US president. General Colin Powell had to present at United Nations. That presentation made me think that a story was made up to justify the invasion. This time, they wanted to get Saddam Hussein, and they did.Prior to the second invasion, it appeared that Iraq was going to resist for quite a while, especially inside the City of Baghdad. But, the US military succeeded so easily. Not long after that, Saddam Hussein was also caught and later executed. It seems a lot of the goals have been achieved. But, if you look at the whole picture, it was so easy to win the war militarily while it is almost impossible to win politically. What Us Got After Iraq War? That is a good question.
  24. As you know, Haiti had a huge earthquake on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. The 7.3 degree quake occurred close to its capital city. It is reported that most of Haiti's high-ranked officials (ministers and above) are missing and some 85% of local doctors are buried under the wobbles. I have seen death toll estimates of about 50,000, 100,000 and 500,000. Haiti is a poor nation. The quake must have created huge damages to the country and its people. It might even become a greater tragedy if the relief effortes do not go smoothly. If you would like to know more information about Haiti, the earthquake, the relief effort, and what you can do to help, you can visit the following websites: About Haiti - http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Quake news - http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Relief and more - https://www.google.org/crisisresponse/ Videos - http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  25. Video camcorders have become more and more popular. They have been fairly popular in the United States. I have bought 2 camcorders. The first one is a Sony 8 mm (analog) camcorder that records video on a tape. It is not much better than a basic model. But, it is great. It still works today after 13 or 14 years. The only problem is it is outdated.About 3 years ago, I bought a JVC 8mm digital camcorder after quite some research. It records on a 8 mm tape in digital format. So, the video can be transferred to a computer easily. According to my research, 8 mm digital was the way to go back then. Hard drive didn't have enough capacity to offer good video quality. The digital camcorder is much smaller and handy than the old Sony analog one. It is capable of taking digital pictures. The specific model has higher somewhat resolution than the basic model, but not very high. Sony did not have something similar. That was the main reason I decided to buy the JVC. That turned out to be a bad decision on my part. The camcorder worked well for a while. But, then it started to quit recording video from time to time. It sometimes gives you a dark screen when you try to record. The problem would come and go at the beginning. Then, all it did was to give me a dark screen when attempting to shoot. I went to the internet and JVC's website. There were discussions about this kind of quality problems of JVC video camcorders. JVC even had a program that would fix the problem for you at no charge (something like that), but my model was not covered by that program. Today, the JVC still sits there doing nothing. There is little chance that it will come back at some point. So, my advice is to buy a fairly basic camcorder and buy Sony. Camcorders are quite sophiscated. They are a bit easily broken. They are relatively expensive among electronics. Though computers are more expensive, they most likely can be fixed if broken, normally by replacing certain parts. So, buy basic models and buy the best brand.
