  1. I have used all three operating systems. XP is the oldest. It works well and doesn't use a lot of resources. Vista is newer, but it takes a lot of resources and is slow. It seems a lot of people know its shortcomings. Win 7 is the newest. It doesn't require a lot of resources like XP. It must have some new features though I haven't noticed or realized. It seems to be a good next generation product to replace XP. Then, I don't know why but the 2003 version of Microsoft Office keeps having problems on my new Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad. I use Word and Excel often. They both stop working fairly often. I don't know it is the laptop or the operating system. The same version of Office works well on XP.
  2. My understanding is as far as humans know, there won't be intruder planets in the solar system to threaten Earth. All major planets relatively close to the Earth have been accounted for. I am not considering the small planets. We know comets can be considered as intruders, but they are not planets. I guess planets are not intruders by definition.
  3. What is the best main stream laptop brand under $1000? Well, I suppose best means best combination of design, functionality, reliability, cost and so on. I think Dell is the best. Its cost is low and everything else is fine. I've had good experience with Dell. Lenovo or IBM seems pretty good at first, but the one I have has problems. For some reason, it does not run Microsoft Office well. Though the problem can probably be fixed, it is not big enough to spend the time to have it fixed. The cost is so so. Apple is stylish but very pricy. Hewlett Packard is a great brand. But, nowadays I don't know how to tell whether a laptop is HP or old Compaq. Maybe they are all Compaq. I have never used an HP laptop. I don't think Sony is main stream.
  4. I would rent a real physical computer. I think a lot of people will the needs to rent computers from time to time. One may want to take a rented laptop on a trip and can use it on a flight or in a train, right? Although cloud service can do many different things for you, you have to have a machine to go online. You sometimes may only need a computer for a short period of time just like you sometimes need to rent a car locally or out of town.Rental cars are relatively easy to manage by rental car companies because each rental doesn't normally alter the car much. It may not be so easy to deal with a computer that has been rented and returned. I mean who knows what has been done to it. Besides, computers are much cheaper than cars. Rental computer companies will probably find it very difficult to make money.
  5. The weirdest thing that I have heard some people will eat is baby mice. It is not just baby mice. It is raw baby mice! That may apply to only to people in a remote and secluded area of the world. I heard that they would look for mouse homes somewhere in the ground/soil and they would dig the mice out. As soon as a baby comes out and someone catches it, he will swallow it immediately.
  6. Normally, one has to have relatively good credit record to get cable service or dish service. I can see why it is not easy to get the service these days without good credit. I think getting your own antenna is a good idea. What is an HD antenna? I hope it will work for most people because it will help save money. In my case, I bought an expensive antenna at Wal Mart and found a spot above my roof to get respectable signals.
  7. That is a good question. You plan ahead big time since you ask that question when you don't need to lose weight.I never had to think about controlling weight until a few months ago. I had not checked my weight for a long time though I started to think I might have gained too much weight. So, I did check and found I gained quite some pounds. That was when I wondered how to lose weight.I googled that topic on the internet and learned about what kind of food provides how many calories. I knew that I needed enough nutrients. So, I decided to cut the amount of starch. I also realized I needed exercises so I would lose fat instead of muscles.I have been into this program for a few weeks and losing somewhat more than one pound per week. It has been easy for me. I seldom feel hungry. I feel good.
  8. I have flown United Airlines before and have noticed they offer Economy Plus seats. Recently, I have had an opportunity to sit in an economy plus seat because I was re-routed. One of the things I noticed is that the leg room is indeed much wider than a regular economy seat, which is pretty good for a long flight. I don't know how many people sitting in Economy Plus seats actually have paid for the upgrades. Maybe quite some percentage, but I did not think that was a big number. If not sold, the seats are assigned by United Airlines to their frequent flyers. Guess who frequent flyers are? They are mostly business travellers. So, I also noticed that a lot of business people sit in Economy Plus seats. Hope you get the idea.
  9. When you talk to someone, it is normal that you sometimes look at him/her other than into his/her eyes. It is not so normal that you pay attention to potential problems of the person. It is not normal if you stare at the problem that you have just discovered. It is silly or disrespectful if you respond to the problem. That is what I think.
  10. Interesting topic. I went through most of the posts and saw "glare" and "CRT" mentioned often. I would think that glare generated by CRT is the most common reason why an eye protector is used. Since many people sit in front of computer screens (even CRT's) without protectors several hours a day, it seems that doing that is no big deal.Another observation of mine is that protectors are used in certain parts (even for LCD's) of the world a lot more often than the rest. That means certain groups of people believe the use of protectors more than others do. Cultural differences may be behind that phenomenon.Eyes can hurt for different reasons if one sits in front of a computer screen several hours a day. It could be because of the screen itself, it could be because of reading for hours itself, or it could be because of some problems with the eyes.
  11. It is said that, after some years, China is projected to overtake the US as #1 in GDP. I don't know how likely it is for the US to stop that. As of now, it looks like it will take some major events to stop that process. What is going to happen is anybody's guess.
  12. I went through 3 web pages of the comments and ratings on this topic. Here are some of my observations.- Those who say that they live in the United States and Canada give relatively consistent ratings of about 8/10. They frequently mention freedom and terrorism.- Those that live in Australia or New Zealand also give relatively consistent ratings, mostly 10/10 but sometimes 9/10. UK generally gets 7/10 or 8/10. I probably did not see any ratings from West European countries on the continent.- Those that live in India, parkistan, Mexico, Phillipines, China, Poland, Ukraine, and so on give ratings over a wide range, pretty much between 0/10 and 10/10. In other words, they have very different opinions.Have you got the idea from the above? Notice also that the ratings are self-ratings, given by the residents themselves. They may or may not have lived in more than one country. They may or may not have traveled abroad much. They have different backgrounds and perspectives. In addition, rating of your own country's living condition has to do with national pride or even political inclination. Anyway, the statitics and some of the comments are quite interesting.
  13. I wouldn't want to include flying cars in the discussion. Those are airplanes rather than cars. I noticed that someone mentioned that the next generation of power for cars would be hydrogen fuel cells. Maybe nuclear-powered? Both hydrogen and nuclear energy seem a lot more risky than today's gas/diesel-powered after the Japan earthquake. I imagine future cars will be solar energy-powered - maybe somewhat distant in the future.I would also imagine that the cars will be built with super-light materials that allow them to use little energy to move around. They will still be strong - and safe for drivers and passengers.
  14. I wonder what happened after the decay back then of social and moral values in America. Did the decay caused the economic development to slow down significantly a few years later or a few decades later? Or, did the American society have to take notable steps to correct the problems? What were the side effects of taking those steps? Did American people suffer as a result? If the decay hadn't happened, would the economic development have become much faster? In the short-term or in the long run?
  15. Is this advertisement in disguise? Anyway, I tried to follow the link to read more about the new restaurant, but it was a broken link. The images did not load at my end either for some reason. So, I don't know how beautiful the restaurant is.I can see why someone would build one like that underwater. Maybe people will go there just because it is all-glass and completely undersea.By the way, did the huge earthquake in Japan do any damages to the structure?
  16. Groupon offers deep discounts (typically 50% or more) on selected products and services. It picks one product or service a day for your local area and let you know through email. Check it out on their website, or find out more on the internet by searching for Groupon.

    Dream

You may be able to minimize your dreams to the point that you almost get rid of all your dreams. Stated more accurately, you may be able to reach a point almost not remembering any of your dreams when you wake up. It is said that everybody dreams when sleeping sufficiently long. Those that wake up at the right (or wrong) time will remember the dreams, but those that wake up at the wrong (or right) time will not remember the dreams. Apparently, you are one of those that wake up at the unwanted time when you remember an unpleasant dream. I am not sure why you do that though.I would think some sort of exercise or medication could adjust the time when you wake up. That way, you may not remember the unpleasant dreams.
  18. I think laptops are all pretty good. Brand may not matter a great deal. Laptops are electronic devices with basically no moving parts. So, they are quite reliable. In that sense, they are all pretty good in quality. In terms of specific brands, I think Dell is very good and HP used to be very good. After HP and Compaq merged, the HP you get might be a Compaq. I am not sure about the Compaq brand. A lot of people like Apple products, but they are too richly priced.
  19. I found this forum through Google. I was looking for web hosting with certain features and Xisto offered what I was looking for. It isn't bad to post here from time to time.
  20. I have learnt German language for a year many years ago. It was hard for me as it had a lot of rules. I was told that once you know enough of the language or become familiar with the rules, it will be easy as all you need to do is to go by the rules. Anyway, I put a year into it, but found limited use of it later on. Many years later, I went to Europe. My trip was fairly easy in the UK as I could understand almost everything. Being in France was the most difficult. I didn't understand the signs and a lot of people wouldn't give me directions in Englist. It wasn't so bad to be in Germany though as I discovered that my limited residual knowlegdge of the German language did help somewhat. I could pronouce words in the signs. I could even recall the meanings of some of the words based on where they are posted. So, it was useful.
  21. The Chinese currency, Renminbi or RMB, is not freely exchangeable. I know that. But, I simply don't understand why its exchange rate with the world's major currencies, including the US dollar, is set/regulated by China. The US has wanted China to allow the RMB to appreciate in value more quickly but has failed so far. Any foreign exchange transaction involves two currencies. I just don't understand why the rate is set/regulated by one side, not negociated.Would you think that the RMB will appreciated substantially in the near future? Why?
  22. Superpower India & China - arrival of bipolar world in 2050? That include three things to happen - superpower India, superpower China and non-superpower US - by 2050. I would think the probability for all three to happen is minimal. The most likely scenario is that none of the three will happen by 2050. I agree with some of the posts above. India and China still have a lot of areas to improve. It is a long way to become a superpower. The US, EU and Japan will attempt to stop you. There are also competitions like Russia and Brazil.Look at what has happened over the last 60 some years from the end of World War II. Japan was close to overtaking the US, but it hasn't been growing by much for 20 years. Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Korea are a lot richer but have slowed down significantly. China and India will grow and then slow down. They need to change their systems overtime to possibly reach superpower status. They are growing fast, but their main competitive advantage is low cost labor in US dollar terms, not because they innovate on new technologies. It is going to take time. Plus, a lot of pieces will have to fall into place...Don't forget that Soviet Union was a fairly strong country to begin with.
  23. Thanks for the information. I will try to avoid a situation like that. Cars do need brakes. But then it is helpful to know how to deal with it in case my car loses its brakes.Years ago, I replaced brake pads on my car and must have failed to follow the replacement procedure exactly. When I first drove the car on the street and attempted to slow it down, the brake paddle fell several inches toward the floor when I hit it. I was scared big time at the moment. But it did come back when I hit it again. Thank God!Thanks again. Let us all drive safely.
  24. I don't know much about quantum mechanics. Maybe I should have. Maybe I should study it in the future. I guess it is a high level of understanding of what is going on in the world, in which there is field everywhere, mass or other stuff exists as ripples in the field, ... ...At a lower level, you would have air molecules flying around. They are extremely tiny in size. There is space, or micro voids, between the molecules. The air molecules are almost free to fly everywhere. Therefore, the micro voids change their shapes all the time. How much they change has to do with what you do to the air. Of course, quantum mechanics suggests that there are fields in those voids. Voids don't mean nothing. At a still still lower level, air is considered a compressible fluid. This is a macro-level of understanding. Air is considered as a continuous fluid. When it is blown past something, it will hit it, change its direction, and get around it if there is a path to allow to. That is why one can feel it. Air is highly compressible. So, when you pump more and more air into a bottle (with pressure), its density increases or the air molecules are packed denser if you look at it at a different level.Yes, you can do something to air to control where it goes. It is virtually impossible to stop the movement of air molecules. That is the way I look at the subject. I think what is more important is that Physics as a science needs to come up with a reasonable theory about gravity. If it is a field, then we need the capability to measure whatever is in the field, not the simple fact that everything falls toward the ground. We need a way to change or remove the gravitational field on earth.
  25. Life is full of changes - at least sometimes. At this stage of my life, there is not a single car that is dedicated to me. I only drive occasionally. When I do, it is a car that's dedicated to someone else. So, the answer is I am driving no car. That said. Let me tell you about my first car. It was a Ford Escort hatchback, 1.9 liters, with standard transmission. It had its fuel pump in the gas tank. The pump quit working after about 100k kilometers while the car was in use. I had no idea what the problem was. It just quit on the road and the engine would not re-start no matter what. I was desparate. It was then towed to a repair shop. The pump was not easily accessible by the mechanics. It costed me quite some amount of money to get it fixed. I later heard that its siblings also stopped running at around 100k kilometers for the same reason. Ouch!
