  1. Welcome Sakhawat! Good to see you on the fourms.I hope you have a very good time here. I too joined recently but I already feel at home - the forum is indeed very friendly and the members are awesome. So hop in and I hope you get your free hosting very soon. See you around!
  2. I think most of you know about this site, but still, here it is: Project Gutenberg They have a "Project Gutenberg" and the aim of the project is to give out 1 trillion free e-books around the world. Now, I am no fan of e-books; in fact, I hate them. This site didn't change my view on e-books but it did give me some books that are very difficult to find in their print editions, especially difficult for me to find in India. I got the complete works of Mark Twain, Shakespeare, and many others. Looking at some on the works of Mark Twain, I was surprised that to notice that 60% of them were unknown to me! I downloaded 2 collections (Twain and Shakespeare) and each collection is over 6000 pages! That's enough to last me for 10 years! So visit the site if you're interested and see what you can get!

    Lynx

I was going through my brother's old programming books when I read about this web browser called "Lynx". It's a text-only browser that was used a long long long long time ago  It's nothing compared to our modern browsers but still has an intriguing look and feel about it. I've included some screenshots for you all to see and if anyone you want to check it out the link is http://lynx.invisible-island.net/ And if you can't tell from the screenshots, I posted this topic using Lynx!
  4. Silly question? Well I just wanted to know how internet speeds vary around the world. so if you're interested, please tell me the details of your internet plan  My plan is pretty idiotic. While the whole world is switching to speeds in terms of gigabytes, here we are still being pushed in kilobytes my plan gives me 2mbps speed (which means a max download speed of 250kbps) with a download limit of 2.5 GB @ Rs.500 (~$10) per month. now what's the use of that! there are "unlimited" plans but the speeds suck even more for those!
  5. Let us not talk about the creation of the universe. It's a touchy topic! Let us talk about the future - how will the universe be in the future? As we know, the universe is constantly expanding.Slowly, yes, but constantly. It is possible that by the time the present generation dies, there may not be any change in the universe, but there will be a time when changes can be noticeable, isn't it? There is a belief that the Earth may not live to see the final changes occuring to the universe. This is because before that happens, our good friend, the Sun will die, releasing an enormous amount of heat power into the solar system, and this is bound to wipe out all the eight planets.Even if we survive this blast of energy, we cannot survive without the sun, can we? There is a small chance that the answer may be yes! Back in the 80's and 90's there were many sci-fi films which predicted how the Earth would be in the twenty-first century. The best example is the movie Back to the Future 2. You may wonder why I've chosen this particular movie. In this film, the hero travels to the year 2015, and he sees flying cars, hover boards (instead of skateboards), police who can get your identity and address just by a simple on-the-spot scan, hi-tech restaurants...well the list goes on. We are just six years away from touching the year 2015. Are we any near to the world which was shown in this movie?!!! Not even close. Not just the movies, but there have been many books written about the future. Enthusiastic authors, putting their imagination to the test, created memorable glimpses of the future. But how long will it be before we finally get to see it? How long will it be before we can finally tap the true potentials of space travel? How long before we exceed the speed of light?!!! So we can safely assume that it will be a long time before these dreams are achieved. After they are achieved, how long will it take us to find an alternative way to survive without the sun? Or, how long will it take before we finally move to Mars? Yes these are a lot of questions and their answers, if any, are bound to be very interesting. I'll hang around here and wait to see if some of you can find out a few answers...
  6. Wow congrats to everyone in and out! I joined just a few days ago and it's already like I've been here for five years :angel:It looks like I joined at the right time, just when everyone is getting used to the new system and is getting ready to eat that cake!!!Well, congrats once again to everyone involved and have a nice birthday Xisto....
  7. That really looks like a cool keyboard but I think wired keyboards would be better in this case. It would make a change from typing with the regular keyboard and I want that change :angel:If I'm not wrong, some of these keyboards glow in the dark too, which can be used to type in the night. Now isn't that a good feature? I think I'm gonna buy this as soon as possible. I'll give a review here when I do!
  8. Hmm the Titanic tragedy is an entirely different matter...it occured a long time ago and back then travelling on the sea was indeed very dangerous. But luckily, we don't get to see such incidents anymore today. Journey by sea has indeed become very safe though it takes a lot of time. We see an air crash from time to time but no sinking ships...maybe it's time people stared thinking more about their personal safety in such matters.
  9. Wow Warcraft 4! I've always loved Warcraft as it's enjoyable with/without cheats enabled! It's a great achievement for Blizzard that they've managed to keep the interest alive in the games even after so many years. Will the story continue from Warcraft 3 or will some story elements be taken from WoW? I know that at the end of Warcraf 3:Frozen Throne Arthus becomes the Lich King and then this continues in WoW. So this new game continues from.....where?!
  10. It's hard to predict the outcome of this super eight stage, isn't it? And Ireland is going the same way as it did in the main World Cup - it reached the super eight stage there too but after that nothing went right for them.Instead of trying to predict the outcome of today's match, how about trying to predict the semifinal teams? My teams are India, South Africa, West Indies and good ol' Pakistan....who knows the final may be a repeat performance of the last world cup!
  11. Well I configured the connection to be triggered automatically at boot time and this has worked beautifully! :angel:It doesn't get disconnected in this way so that's a huge relief for me. Thank you all for helping me out. I really appreciate it :(And as for Ubuntu 9.04, it hasn't given me any other problem for now and it's running superbly. In fact, I think it's the most slick version of Ubuntu so far...
  12. Since you want to learn Italian and Spanish, I recommend that you go to these two sites and listen to some of their audio lessons. They're really helpful in giving you a headstart to learning new languages. The lessons are free and you get to hear the natives speak the language. Then you can practice on your own. I found out that this really helped me and that's why I'm not giving any more sites except these two. Italianpod101 Spanishpod
  13. There are so many threads about soccer and every other kind of sports here, very less cricket fans eh? :(So is anyone following the ongoing T20 world cup in England? I'm rooting for my home country India of course. Too bad Australia were knocked out - they would have brought in some excitement in the tournament. In this short format it will be very difficult to predict who will be the winner, seeing that England lost to a weak team in the very first game of the tournament!
  14. Thankfully I've never played WoW till today - yeah, thankfully! But that doesn't mean I wasn't addicted by similar games. I played a game called "TIbia" for quite some time and it was actually quite fun though it's graphics are outdated. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone as I seriously doubt that it has some virus problems, but it's worth a look, and afterall, the virus could have come from another source I'm not sure. Tibia is a very old mmorpg. It began in 1995 if I'm not wrong. It's a pity they haven't updated the graphics but maybe that's just because they wanted to keep it free. Check it out if you like: Tibia
  15. Wow this sure is scary to beginners! This just goes to show how a simple tool like a keylogger/trojan can cause so much devastation. I hope your problems end really soon and your site stays safe as before. If you find out the problem and the solution please tell it here as it might be useful to someone else who might be having the same problem...
  16. Then it seems that the palm is going to lose out to the new iPhone isn't it? More things against it than for it. I hope Apple looks at the competition in the market and tries to listen to the customers' complaints for once and make the iPhone much more better. Yeah that's asking for much seeing that they've done a lot with the latest version, but still, what's the loss in trying to ask?
  17. Yeesh! I never read anything like this. People have been meditating for thousands of years and there's not a mention of such a thing happening till now. Well even if this is true then it definitely can't be anything dangerous. And even if the brain does grow bigger we will still be using the same amount of memory, still do the same things....meditation is not to help you become a genius, is it? It just calms the mind and helps you concentrate. Maybe if that concentration is used properly can the person become a genius
  18. If only the telephone companies reduced the broadband prices to bring them down to dial-up level, then we could make dial-up connections extinct and then maybe some of these problems could be solved. we have super fast speeds on the internet today with some countries achieving speeds in gigabytes, we still have to see some people lamenting with dial-up Being an old dial-up customer I feel sorry for you guys but at this point there's nothing more to do but tell you to try and get a faster connection.
  19. This may be old technology, but I came to know about them only recently. Rollable keyboards, which you can twist and turn into any position, and can even be washed with water have been in the market for quite a while now.But how popular are they? Are they convenient to use? I heard someone say that the keys are not so comfortable to use. Is this true? That's a whole lot of questions Can someone help me out please? Thanks in advance.
  20. Just googling out "blogger templates" will give you a lot of sites which offer free templates. Just visit these sites and pick your choice! And while I agree that WordPress is more customizable than blogger, I would still stick to blogger because I can sign into it using my Gmail account so no hassles of creating an extra account to blog. And if I'm not wrong, blogger has introduced a feature where you can blog through your mobile and email. Doesn't this mean I can blog while checking my Gmail inbox? Now isn't that convenient!
  21. I don't know about Taxi but Crazy Taxi is the best game I have played in this genre. Beating the clock is fun and the challenges are cool too. The characters are quirky and the customers get excited upon being hit by a car! And you could earn $5000 in just 15 minutes. Oh that was too much fun.I never played that game beyond the first version. I heard there's Crazy Taxi 3, but never got the chance to play it. Anyone else here played it? I just hope like most games, the sequel is not worse than than the original!
  22. Both of the toughest boss characters I faced till now are in the Prince of Persia series though in two different games... Boss: The Dahaka Game: Prince of Persia Warrior Within First of all, getting to the Dahaka was tough, because he doesn't appear until you find all nine life upgrades in the game, which meant running around here and there looking for crakcs in the walls and under the floor....man that was frustrating! If you don't get all the life upgrades, you end up fighting Kaileena, the empress of time and that was a pretty easy fight. After six hours of running here and there, I finally found all the life upgrades and finally got to meet the Dahaka. For those who don't know, the Dahaka is the monster who is bent on killing the prince throughout the game. He cannot be beaten except with a special sword which the prince gets only after getting all upgrades. He's huge, black and can shoot out tentacles at you even from under the ground. It was these tentacles that made things so hard. If I went too close to him he would attack directly. If I went away from him he would shoot from under the ground and these take away a lot of health. Finally, after sixteen odd trials, I managed to beat him and that was the best moment in my gaming life Boss: Klompa Game: Prince of Persia The Two Thrones It's not a hard fight actually, but figuring out what to do took me a while. I always thought that the "speed kill" feature in this game could have been better utilised and this boss fight proved it. Under the speed kill rules, you have to attack only when the prince's dagger flashes. If you press the button too early or too late the kill fails. Putting that apart, what do you think when you're supposed to fight a 50-feet tall giant? You'd think that you should attack as fast as possible. But no, in this fight the prince has to climb up two platforms one after the other, and execute three speed kills from each platform and only then could he attack normally. For figuring this out, I had to tear my hair out! The final boss fight was much easier than this because I knew that I would have to do speed killing in every boss fight.
  23. Have you heard about fuel cells? It is touted to be the winner the race to replace oil/gas/petrol/diesel used to run vehicles. And unlike other contenders, it does offer good speed along with conserving energy. A heavy bus running with a fuel cell could manage to clock 100 miles per hour. Now that's something! The only thing it emits is water vapour, which doesn't harm anyone. Now doesn't this sound like a cool thing? Coming back to oil, I really don't think there will be much of a problem, because oil may never really run out. There will be a time in the future when even the most careless person on the planet will realise that oil needs to be conserved in order to survive. At that time, the human race will finally learn how to preserve the oil resources and hopefully, create another alternative, using oil in the meantime.
  24. Disclaimer: Use this tutorial at your own risk. Though I haven't given any harmful procedure, I am not responsible if you take a wrong step and end up in a bad situation. So keep your eyes open! *** I'm not sure if this tutorial applies for distributions other than Ubuntu...I'm pretty sure they won't, but blame by liiitle knowledge of other distributions if this works on others. The requirements for this process to be successful are: 1.Any version of the Linux Distribution Ubuntu (preferably 8.04 or higher) installed on your system along with any version(s) of Windows. 2.You should be booting from the GRUB bootloader instead of the Windows bootloader. *** Did you ever want to change the name of the operating system you're using? Well you can't do that practically, but you sure can change the name of the OS in the list that shows up in the dual-boot screen. The only reason that we're using GRUB to do this is because the bootloader that Windows uses doesn't allow you to do this. Ubuntu grants you full freedom! Okay so let's get started, shall we? *** 1.Log into Ubuntu (should be an admin account) 2. Open a terminal window (it can be found in Applications --> Accesories --> Terminal) 3. Type in the following command: (Note: In "menu.lst", it is not the number "1" but the letter "el" that is in the extension) It will prompt you to enter your password. Type in your password and press enter. 4. A text file with the name "menu.lst" will open up. This is the file using which Ubuntu utilizes the GRUB bootloader. Now be careful as to what you do in here because the slightest mistake at the wrong place could mess up your bootloader. There's nothing to be scared of, just follow the next steps carefully. 5. In this text file, scroll down to the bottom. You should be seeing the name of your Windows OS beside a word "title". If you can't see it, press Ctrl+F and search with the name of your Windows OS. It will be highlighted. 6.Now that you have found it, time to make some changes! But be careful...you must change only the name and nothing else. Now delete the name of the Windows OS. Only the OS name and nothing else...not even the word "title" that is beside the OS name. 7.Now save the file and exit. After restarting, you'll find the name you've given to windows in the boot menu. If you have more than one version of Windows running, you can edit their names too in the same way. All the OSes other than Ubuntu will be listed out at the end of the "menu.lst" file. So play around with the titles till you run out of quirky names! (Note: Do not change anything else in this file unless you know what you are doing.) Have fun!
  25. Triangle keys on a keyboard? That sounds pretty interesting And it would make a pretty picture too....think about it - after years of seeing a regular keyboard, seeing such a "triangle" keyed keyboard would be a good change!Putting aside the looks, I think the accuracy part is also justified. The "deadspace" or whatever else it is called () does play an important role in the accuracy of typing. So lets hope we see these keyboards very sooooon. And talking about on-screen keyboards, they're okay for mobile phones, but I think they'll never come into the PC zone, would they? Everyone would have sore backs trying to type everything using an on-screen keyboard!
