The Pain Of Blog Comment Spam And fighting it
Xalor replied to Baniboy's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Wasn't there a person at DEFCON that showed a bot that could get past CAPTCHA with about 70% accuracy? I don't remember the exact link but I do remember reading about it on Gizmodo, they had a special on reCAPTCHA technology and how its' changed over the years. Perhaps we should start looking into 3D images instead of 2D ones because most programs aren't able to perceive depth in an image. -
Best Cell Phone Provider: Verizon Wireless Or At&t?
Xalor replied to FruitRocks's topic in Mobile Phones
Support wise I still think that Verizon phones are better, there's always a deal and its easy to get cheap phones. At&t does have some good dumbphones and there is their blackberries and the iPhone, but Verizon has a better selection of smart phones. -
It is of choice I believe however but the intense pressure put on these boys, assuming you are talking about Iraq and those third world countries the only place they are accepted, and given money and food is at the mosque. These recruiters give them a chance to live and experience life, they give them a chance to pay back those men who gave them food and life. There are so many centers, and they not only use religion, but sense of duty and family. They make them feel uninimportant unless they give up their life. We can't understand that difference in America or other countries, even Japan had suicide fighters, those kamikazi pilots were the same, they were willing to give up their life for the greater end. Here in the US, our military doesn't have that much of a brainwashing program other than making us respect soldiers, these suicide bombers are the same, they start off as poor children and become these matyrs and others look upon them as heroes who have fallen against the West/

.xxx Domain Names Will it be a reality
Xalor replied to longtimeago's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I don't care what happens to the firewalls or the security companies, if they really believe in the necessity of their product than people will continue to buy child protection software, although I still anything other than OpenDNS is a waste of money. I think this would be a great way to remove this smut from computers everywhere, and its easy not to mess up and type in the wrong domain. too many people end up at these type of sites by misspelling a word, and now with a completely different domain extension they can both attract more traffic and get people to change. However its going to be impossible to enforce because as now it is not illegal to have it online, and unless all the nations come together to change the laws its not gonna be much of a change. Either way I still think its a great idea, although I have a feeling unless the US, and Europe back it (free speech problems) its not going anywhere other than China, doesn't matter in North Korea, cause Red Star OS already blocks it. -
Thanks for the tutorial, very helpful and pretty basic for us to understand, and also thank you for supplying the code. I'm actually learning a bit of javascript the basics only, not the jQuery and library elements, but how the query works, and how you actually get the id or class name, or how to reference a tag, using the Net Tuts thing from Envato, great site by the way, the videos and resources are simply spectacular. Still anyway great explanation and simple language, hope to see more javascript stuff, that doesn't require any flash work and messing with .gifs and .swf files in Flash. On a tangent, Adobe CS5 announced today for all you designers, and coders.

I guess I could say that I believe in religion because of my parents, they stressed upon the necessity of having some sort of deity or god in your life to make you achieve for something. Its different with me though, I believe in God, that there is one, and He does watch upon our very actions. But I can't accept that man's definition of him is true, I don't know whether its the Bible, the Bhagavad Gita, Q'aran, or the Torah is correct. There even more concepts and faiths that split our true God into different forms. I think that in the core principle we believe in a Creator is the fact that we must exist, and the fact that we exist is the problem, who controls chance, the fact that a quark actually exists, even if we get down to the most basic particle of all, in the case of String Theory, the actual string, or ring or whatever the current iteration is, who created that particle. If energy cannot be made or destroyed, where did the first energy come from, if it was matter that was converted into energy, where did that matter come from. There must be a source, and whether that source is dictated by Science or Religion, I do not care, but the fact is that there must be a source, and that is why we believe, because we do not want to be insignificant pieces of matter and atoms, who's only purpose is to survive and reproduce, but rather that our actions here account to something over there.

Welcome back, they changed the name, still a bit confused on that since not all the parts of the forum match the new name. I know when I came back to visit the name change freaked me out, since I thought that someone had just bought the site. Its' pretty weird, but the new site is wicked awesome, I love the opening animation, although it won't work on the iPad. Since there's no flash, hoping there's an iFriendly version of their site. (Look I made an Apple Pun)! So yea, have fun, and I'll stalk you around to see if you're really back or you're just one those people.

Photoshop Cs4 Signature Tutorial (video, 720p)
Xalor replied to Tramposch's topic in General Discussion
You've been really active on here, I kinda came back again, after doing like a million survey sites since I need hosting again >.> On topic, nice tutorial and I really like the sigs you have there, just noticed that you had more than one cut clipping mask in the sample signature, makes it look pretty awesome. -
I used the bots a couple of times, and I tested with a couple of friends, but it seems pretty weird to me. I mean would you really use something like that? I still think that Word and revisions work out better because a lot of time, you need to change things and put parts together not always keep the current revision. I still think that email and wave should stay separate, and in the future, it should not be combined. What do you guys think? Even if wave was introduced back then as email, we would have found something else instead of wave for mail. It doesn't actually allow you to send a uneditable message, and that message becomes public if you don't change your settings. I for one don't trust it but still the fact that you can implement your own Google Wave on your server is pretty amazing. Like a corporate intranet could setup Waves for each department and have them collaborate together. Hope that all the Wave services will be linked together, by choice of course since it wouldn't be right to link corporate and personal accounts together. On another note, if anyone needs an invite, just PM me, and I'll give you one, got 14 or more to go, (invited all my accounts)

Cracking Rapidshare - What A Waste Of Time
Xalor replied to polter's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I actually don't trust rapidshare because all the files are hidden in .rar files or some other sort of archived source. Searching for files on rapidshare, I agree is basically pointless, the best thing you can do is find a real torrent site, where there are active links and files, and download that way. ISPs are gonna find out anyway, and use transmission to block your upload, and definitely rapidshare links are almost all viruses, unless uploaded by a trusted user, in my opinion, any link with rapidshare on youtube is not legal, and there are so many other file storage services, that work a lot better, and are not tracked by the ISPs at all, i.e. Dropbox, for 2GB free, and unlimited bandwith, well more than I actually need. Even MediaFire is better than rapidshare. -
Looks very nice and clean, however I would change up the background color for each of the text, make it a div and then put a background color, since now its seems broken up on firefox 3.6. Other than that very well done, and I really do like it. Howd you get that information, is it based on the BBC API or something? Over all i like the idea, and I hope it gets big enough for you to put up even more radio stations. Oh and I would think about using a different font with a nicer header, maybe an image or a nice background pattern, other than what you have now. Good luck with your site, hope it comes it well in the end. Oh wait I just read the FAQ, very nicely explained, and that would be a great concept for having a personal site. I think you should also center the loading bar, and maybe add a bit of flash animation, since right now its looks a bit disjointed, with the loading and a simple page that comes up.

Only reason I like Ubuntu over other Linux Distros, although I find that Fedora is equivalent, if not better at some times. @knoppixusr, I would say the problem is probably the same as mine, I freeze up at times, because those apps are not installed properly. I would try updating yourself, and clear the cache once in a while, and update apps as well. Like truefusion said, I kinda like Ubuntu as well for the software resources. Its easier than compiling from source, I can use the aptitude packaging service, compared the less usable ones for mandriva and gentoo. Most are based on the debian system though, but Ubuntu organizes the best using launchpad and 90% of the apps work with KDE/GNOME Ubuntu instead of most of the other versions.

Imageshack.com is slow for me actually. I'm really annoyed by the fact that its not organized at all, and its really slow. Imageshack doesn't always give me a chance to make albums and sperate images into sections and it really doesn't give it anything by dates or times. I personally use Flickr now, but photobucket is great for quick uploads and changes in version numbers, if you want multiple copies, however the bandwith is a bit bad, but in reality, if you don't use too many of them, you probably won't run out right away. Flickr is better for me cause I upload my revisions to photobucket and upload a final version to flickr, to keep the bandwith going. I use tinypic for randomized screenshots or dropbox if I really need.

New Template Design For Gfxtrap.com
Xalor replied to BuffaloHelp's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
I like the concept of the SOTW (SOTM) being shown up on front, makes the main section of the forum standout comparatively. The only thing, we don't really update that much, so in reality, the site should be pushing people to check out this forum more than checking back at the gfxtrap site llike truefusion said. I really like inverse_bloom's design. It looks really good how'd you do come up with the sidebar navigation design? It looks awesome as a drop down menu, although well I guess it would be a side drop menu? -
I understand what you mean. No matter what the point is about more myCENTS, his goal is still getting revenue to support the free servers. He really is a master of SEO (thats Search Engine Optimization right?), since when I search my name or my forum name actually I get Xisto, even other links about my sites comes up with Xisto before my other stuff, sometimes before my own Twitter account, same name. So I guess if he moved the GFX Section up the links would change and it would mess up the SEO layout? Oh that means we're out of the Staff Section?

Zune Pass is basically the equivalent of an itunes account since you can't unlock some of the more advanced features of zune hd without using the zune pass. One example is the Smart DJ playlist, which is the genius feature of the zune hd, and tagging on the hd radio stations is not possible without a zune pass. A Zune Pass costs 15 dollars a month, and you still need to pay monthly to keep your songs, since they expire once the zune pass expires. There are ways to crack the DRM, but its not automated anymore, since you can't move the DRM songs to another device, although I heard there's a way to transfer it to a windows mobile device like the omnia 2. That was the device they used as the example I believe, although I doubt it follows Microsoft's rules on that matter. The HD Radio is a usefull addon if you don't have wifi all the time, but since you have most of the repeated songs on the radio you pretty much cancel it out on that point. Zune Pass costs about 180 dollars a year, you get 10 free songs a month DRM free for you to keep, so basically you pay 1.50 for each song, (assuming you aren't using the free unlimited downloads (DRM-based however)). If you do use the zune pass you need to basically think about the amount of music you listen, to and check if the Zune media player has those songs/bands/genre, especially if you plan on listening to more of the Indie labels, since the zune store doesn't let just anyone start selling their songs.

I would go for the ipod touch 3g over the zune hd, only if you take the 32 gig one. The new one has a faster processor, and it does have much better capabilities than the original. If you plan to only use the browser + twitter + music/video I would take the zune Hd though. I'm more into the apps just as much as the music, since I do love the simple to play games, and even the more advanced games on the touch. Its much more reliable I think so far anyway, few reports of troubles even with jailbroken ones, and the zune although amazing with the specs, graphics alone cause of Tegra (nvidia's system on a chip design) has been reported to be very buggy. If you do plan on getting on the zune cause of the screen and system quality I would wait up a bit until a new firmware is released. It should fix some of the problems and the SDK or whatever it is should be released to 3rd party developers as well. However Microsoft is working on an individual contact only, since you see that the twitter app was developed by twitter itself, same with the Ferrari GTI and Audiosoft. Some of the games seem much nicer on the Zune than they are on the touch. The screen gives it a better quality, but the iPod touch is much better in light than the zune HD. OLED washes out in light and the iPod touch doesn't. The smaller screen on the Zune HD makes playing games a bit more difficult, I assume from what Engadget says. I've only used the device in person on a couple of occasions, since I only own an iPod Touch. I still strongly reccomend the iPod Touch. Just using it for 3 months makes it more useful than my laptop at times. I can quickly check for movies, or find a song, that I've been searching for. Even the games that I wouldn't pay to play on a PC, I actually paid to play on an iPod Touch. If you own a PSP, I wouldn't reccomend it as much, but I can't attest to that either. I have a PSP with a dozen or so games, but I still enjoy the same games so much better on the iPod Touch since its a bit smaller and I can play a quick run on endless or add a bit in the storyline, while on the PSP its basically only a gaming console, media wise its okay, but can only handle a couple of formats. Zune HD is better on the screen quality as well since it matches pixel to pixel on a smaller screen to the iPod Touch, although quality on a small screen is rather pointless anyway. Overall I reccomend the iPod touch because even though you mention the screen as a disadvantage, the Zune HD and the iPod Touch cancel each other out on that end. The iPod Touch does bring in a full browser, that lets you display even complex webpages, unlike the Zune HD which only lets you use mobile sites, so sites like Engadget don't load fully. However if you are an audiophile, or someone who plans on using it only for music and video I would go for the Zune HD. Radio plus a suberb quality screen for videos and a great tagging system plus a rather well designed integrated music experience system (Zune pass) makes it a solid device. ONLY FOR MUSIC LOVERS. Its only for those who only want music on their device. The iPod touch gives you a better app ecosystem, more apps, sometimes better quality apps, a decent processor for the 8gig device and a blazing processor for the 32gig or the 64 gig, the latter two I reccomend getting no matter what. The iPod touch does give you more bang for your buck with the apps, and the integrated youtube player. And you still get a great music player, albeit not as slick and intuitive as the Zune HD, but is still making leaps and bounds with the expansion of the Genius system, and regular updates still make it just as good at times.

New Template Design For Gfxtrap.com
Xalor replied to BuffaloHelp's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
True, no point in buying a theme if you have a whole GFX Crew! Um if we aren't logging in, wouldn't it be the same if we just have plain HTML page, and have the feed from the GFXTrap section on this forum going there? Just saying if we aren't logging in, that might be more interesting, and especially if its just a page to learn about the team and Xisto? I really like gray-silver gradients, and maybe a couple of solid colors? I like the color scheme that was posted. -
Well Karmic's upgrade did not work with my laptop's wifi connectivity and also doesn't support the graphics card apparently. Its not my own problem though, since most people have had shoddy coverage with Karmic as well. Strange since, my laptop is one of the more popular ones, and since the standard size on it is usually 500GB, a lot of peopl ddo dual-boot with it aswell. I am planning on getting a new desktop and then I'll dual-boot with Karmic. I hope the next revision changes it, I could get wifi to work, but GRUB 2.0 does mess it up a lot and makes it not possible to change it so works. There are really difficult solutions, but sticking with Jaunty is fine. I really hate the fact that Jaunty doesn't support PPA though, I need to use the longer way, the new way is so much easier, two command and its done.

Is There Any "developers Only" Browser? For website testing purposes
Xalor replied to greenpeace's topic in The Internet
You can use IE tab with firefox, to simulate internet explorer which uses the trident rendering engine. You're gonna have to install Opera and Safari or some sort of Webkit engine to check up on the webkit rendering. I wouldn't really check up on those rendering engines much, few really use Safari on a windows machine, and I doubt most of your viewers are Apple product users, but if they are you can just install Chrome or Safari. There's a lot of webkit browsers as well. You can also install Seamonkey instead, which is a streamlined version of firefox. There are other browsers than can switch between different rendering engines. I forgot the name, but it runs Trident, Webkit, and Gecko. You can switch up to anything that you want. However you might wanna try checking it fixing quirks in each one itself, since its not always the engine but the browser. There's nothing to test with Opera, you're gonna have to install it yourself, since Presto isn't used on anything else. Opera has got a tight company of its own. I still don't know how that makes money, but I'm not gonna talk about it, its basically one of the biggest free software companies that isn't open source. -
(on a completely random note, most indian forum posters say Dear Friend [wonder why]) Well all I could say about frames is that they didn't really allow people to see the content properly. When you embed a frame, (is it called embedding?), you basically took another page and stuck it in the same one. That wasn't a clean design at all. Search engines get annoyed by this simply because it indexes the url, not the actual frame, so when you google for yourself, instead of getting the content you expected you're redirected to the main page. As well as that you aren't able to use proper navigation, because it simulates dynamically created pages, and with XHTML/CSS you can simply use divs and move around containers, and now you really don't need to use frames anymore. There's still possibilities with it but if you really need it just use the framset dtd/declartion or if you use the HTML doctype, just skip the strict end, I mean if you're using HTML Strict, no point in not switching XHTML with proper closing, right? With advances in AJAX and PHP you can actually generate these pages dynamically and this way the pages stay forever!

Thanks for the share. Its pretty useful for beginners who wants a quick reference to check up on the common values and properties. Its mostly just a list however it is good. I would make a condensed form of w3c schools properties and addon to their cheatsheets. That site has a couple of different cheat sheets for like ASP CFM Javascript/livescript, JSP, PHP, and like tons of other ones like mySQL I believe also. Well I mean other than teh standard CSS and HTML ones. Since we do have that I would make sure not to make another one like that, which is easily found. Don't get depressed if people don't post right away though =) Its still a good resource. For other who want more advanced techniques, I would go with the Woork Handbook, just google it, it should be woork.org with the rest of his cheatsheets. That should also help you out Threadstarter (TS). @TS its pretty usefull so you should look it up as a new resource.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm just gonna leave it up as is as a filler for now, I'm working on a multipage design I just wanted something up for now, now that I see there's more to it than just a simple design with HTML I might have to actually think more about security and all of that stuff =( Good idea on the name on the form, would make more sense, although I don't expect people to contact us via that method.

HTML basically came from w3schools. Best way to learn anything from the basics, without knowing how the damn internet works. Its pretty usefull for remembering items as well since it lists most of the values and all the properties, and is sort of updating, the company is actually somewhere from Switzerland, but the forums are run by someone in the US who was just promoted to Admin from a regular member. It hasn't been actively developed but the site was given a redo by them I assume, the forums are from invision power board using their subdomain server, no idea why it wasn't posted on their domain, strange about that. Other places that were usefull for me was using expression web two/three actually. I started around the time that number two came out and it did help to reinforce some of the tags and values so I could remember it more easily. Also texter came in handy for creating simple html templates to save time and reading it over and over did help to memorize most of it. texter is from lifehacker and is a pretty handy textexpander. Its built in autohotkey or ahk and is found at lifehacker.com/code or something like that. Pretty nifty.

Would You Use Ie Explorer Even If It Wasn't Bundled With Windows?
Xalor replied to The Simpleton's topic in The Internet
Probably not since its pretty annoying to work with. I feel that it loads really slow especially on a new machine, that came from the manufacturer. Microsoft makes money this way anyway, and so do these OEM manufacturers such as Dell, Acer, Asus, Lenovo, IBM, Compaq, Ferrari GTI, iBuyPOWER, Cyberpower, alienware, voodoo, and the rest, they bundle crapware and useless toolbars to the point where its horribly crushed and slowed down by useless ActiveX addons, which by far makes a horrible experience, since there is no easy way of removing them once they get a hold of your computer. By far the worst is HP who bundles so much garbage its annoying. And Since i expect Microsoft to bundle something with IE to make up for it being free, its only free on Windows so they can control the whole experience, I wouldn't download it, its the same as paying for Netscape Communicator, and actually I'm happy that IE did come around at that time, made for some competition since Netscape Navigator and Communicator had been sitting around and just wallowing in their wealth.
