Member Group [hosted] Will Be Changed
BuffaloHelp replied to BuffaloHelp's topic in Alerts, News & Announcements
Having a single group was the initial idea from both OpaQue and I. Not only script to "change" the user group once a user became a hosting member was hard on the server's resource, we have "custom title" for those who reached higher level. There's a setting to promote a user once the user reached set number of posts but your profile's title already does that. I feel it's redundant :)But like everything in life, nothing is set in stone. OpaQue may change his mind at any time Until then we are all members of Xisto.[HOSTED] group has been successfully migrated to Members group. Please report any unfinished move to admin via PM. -
New Template Design For Gfxtrap.com
BuffaloHelp replied to BuffaloHelp's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
I will create RSS for GFX section soon. All we would need is RSS to HTML script and we'll be all set. In the past I used Cutenew CMS to update the front page of GFXTrap.com. I wonder if we should still do this? Or just leave it as a shell and make it function like a portal page.Give your suggestions and opinions. -
Yes. Wordpress is very impressive on how easy to upgrade. I remember the old days where I had to upload file by file...Do as you did--install the version listed in Fantastico and check for the version upgrade. It only takes few minutes and it's automated

.htaccess Wordpress On Windows Hosting? [resolved]
BuffaloHelp replied to inverse_bloom's topic in Websites and Web Designing
If I didn't know any better, htaccess is Apache based directive. So if you are in Windows server environment you have to have Apache installed. Perhaps the reason it's not working is that your server does not have Apache running. Windows server runs its own web server, usually IIS. And this requires different type of directive to make permalink work. Windows IIS does not support mod_rewrite module for rewriting URLs, if you are running WordPress on Windows IIS,whenever you try to use Permalinks, you always get something like this: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ In this case, visit Wordpress URL rewriting in IIS For Apache htaccess visit Wordpress URL rewriting in Apache -
What I would do is call the manufacturer. Obviously you have the warranty. Use it before it's too late. I am more concerned with physical damage like hard drive spike or motherboard short circuit. So call the warranty department and tell them your laptop ceased to operate one day. It's unethical but lie and do not tell them about the power outage. That might void your warranty coverage. Play nice and speak nicely to the warranty department. And have patience. They will walk you through gazillion steps just to find out, "oh your harddrive might be bad." It happened to me. I was on the phone for nearly 2 hours until they accepted my original claim, "I think my power supply is bad. It's not charging the battery." They had me check for virus, blah blah and they even connected to my laptop and updated, patched for hours until they issues a new power supply.Anyway, you want to have well functioning hard drive and not the drive that might fail because of this outage.

To learn more about HIPAA, visit http://www.hhs.gov/hipaa/index.html HIPAA for computer programmers are very complex. The basic rule is that who is programming and who can access the information? As a programmer, your codes are designed to have fail safe? Do your servers have redundant (clustered) services so that it is efficient and trouble free? Who has the access to data and who can retrieve it? When you code, do you code in HIPAA environment (or basically you work off of your laptop at a cafe)? Well, you get the idea. It sounds elementary but you wouldn't believe how many programmers are breaking simple rule as, who else has access to your code/data? Secondly, to be truly HIPAA compliant, you have to use HTTPS a secure connection when transmitting any patient's private information. And encrypt with strong enough password or hash that only the intended recipient is allowed to open. And the server tech, the programmer and all others who are not HIPAA compliant cannot open the data. And the data is not stored off site for later viewing by non-HIPAA compliant personals. While there's argument prescription's number/account can be obtained publicly by submitting prescription to a database that can retrieve the information is not your job. That is, unless you manage that end as well. For example, you design the delivery of a prescription number. And then you also design the retrieval of a prescription number and search the database to pull the patient record. Then you must be compliant with sending and sorting portion as well. But, if you send prescription information only--well, let's just say that it's gray area for now. Third is who is receiving the information and by which media? If it's fax form where is the fax located--open area where everyone can access and incoming fax paper sitting there for everyone to see, or personals room where only the pharmacist and pharmacist related personals? If it's email form, is the email company HIPAA compliant, how is it secured throughout the transmission (hash key encryption or password protected)? Who can log into this email account and which computer access it? Does this computer ONLY used for accessing HIPAA compliant email or is used for other purpose as well--like general surfing and running non HIPAA programs. To bypass the compliance, you can do a simple submit of name and phone number to be contacted by the pharmacist. So that the pharmacist calls the patient for refill which eliminates the transmission of sensitive data with your programming. You can design the recipient end by creating visual flag or alert when this contact is received.

Hello Xisto members, It is time to reinvent our T17 GFX section, once more. Please visit, http://gfxtrap.com/ and suggest a new template for our site. What we would like to do is get RSS feed from our forum and translate that into HTML page for majority of GFXTrap.com Keep it simple. There's no need for complex menus. You can get the RSS fee for the graphics site. Basic information to be included in our GFXTrap.com site are: Introduction Latest topics feed from RSS to be shown in the main page Link to T17 GFX Crew T17 GFX Crew bios other information I failed to mention This site should be automated. That's why we're trying to keep it simple. This portal site leads back to our forum for discussion and interaction. So keep that in mind when you design menu and links. We are looking for clean design that can be integrated with CMS and RSS. Thank you all in advance for your participation.

cPanel is an expensive cost for web hosting providers. We might take it for granted but cpanel is NOT normally included with other hostings, especially the free ones. And the cPanel company and Fantastico have join venture when purchasing a package. I'm not sure if Xisto - Web Hosting can select what is included with cPanel but for now, Fantastico is the default. Perhaps in the future Xisto - Web Hosting may include other automated script installers. Maybe it's as easy as flicking a switch to include Softaculous. Maybe it's harder because of the licensing agreement. It's hard to know what Xisto - Web Hosting is planning that offers the best for everybody. Now, knowing that's involved and reviewing Softaculous, I believe it would be a very hard change/integration. Softaculous offers two versions: free and premium. The free version does not even include Wordpress. Which means Xisto - Web Hosting might have to purchase the premium version. And who will absorb the cost? Hopefully not the paying customers and certainly not the free customers. But someone will pay to offset the cost to operate.

I am seeing only 4 members with GFX insignia. Please confirm who are part of GFX crew. With the special permission from OpaQue I am going to run a trial and give GFX crew abilities to moderate T17 GFX forum sections. Instead of giving the entire GFX section to be moderated by GFX crew, I'd like to start of with SOTW section (which used to be most active) and possibly grow from there. GFX crew will have the ability to edit, delete, merge all posts in SOTW.I have not come up with the special color, yet. I am trying to avoid any segregation by visual. GFX crew are to be active especially in GFX section. Therefore, I am implementing this trial. Once hosted group has been emptied out, I'm thinking about using the same color for GFX crew (brown color). No bold, no special bracket to enclose etc.

Maybe it's a problem with SMC router and you may never be able to solve the situation until you change your router. The common misconception is that you have to have printer that has wireless built-in to have wireless printing setup. This is untrue. And you do not have to have wireless print server to have wireless printing either. All you need is a printer connected to a wireless router via print server. Illustration:Any network (built-in) printer ===== print server ===== wireless routerWhen you connect to wireless router you can print "wirelessly" to the printer because it's all networked. Canon printer does not have built-in network interface. You will need a print server (about $10-$40). With a print server you can turn any printer into wireless, along with wireless router. To enable wireless printing in your situation, you'll need to change your SMC router to that of more stable router service. A new wireless router cost average of $50 these days. You can also Ad-Hoc your laptop or pc with wireless card to connect directly to the Wi-Fi Canon Printer. But this allows you to be severed from the rest of the network. Ad-Hoc is almost like P2P where you connect directly only to the device.

Queens! My home town! I grew up in Flushing. It's a simple site and really does not feel like a medical or pharmaceutical related. And I don't know if this pharmacy wanted to have this kind of feel, but if someone is able to renew or order to pharmacy via webpage, chances are the person is very savvy with the internet. Therefore, you should make it more personable, clear and better to place order, like having individual input box for prescription number, DOB, and other information. This way the user can tab through the fields. The problem with the textbox is that required field cannot be "controlled" and verified. A user can place extra back space and delete the whole line. And I noticed that your site was designed for screen bigger than 1024x768. Although this is alright, people with netbooks or smaller screen will have some difficulty with your design layout. And furthermore, Xisto is not HIPAA certified. So if you are hosting this website using any of Xisto service(s) you will have to be HIPAA compliant. Furthermore, any patient information related to the pharmacy must be HIPAA compliant. You as a programmer must be HIPAA compliant as well. If this was an oversight I strongly suggest you look into immediate compliance.

A while ago, I was anticipating the launch of small, personal web surfing device that is like iPod Touch but with bigger screen...let's say 10-12 inches. Sounds like a perfect device for surfing and doing all web things, right? But how much? Initially the developers of Crunchpad was aiming for around $200 USD. No way, you say? Well, prototypes were launched, YouTube has bunch of working final product and the web was all over about this new device. Popular Mechanics called it one of the 10 "most brilliant products" of this year. It was going to be the destroyer of Apple's $800+ tablet, ipod Touch killer and geeks and nerds everywhere will be seen with this on their laps! It was going to revolutionize how we consume the internet! But, on November 30, 2009, Michael Arrington the creator of Crunchpad announced that the company, Fusion Garage, he's been working with decided to pull the plug and launch on their own, without Michael Arrington and Techcrunch. The article draws analogy that it's like Foxconn, who build the iPhone, notifying Apple a couple of days before launch that they’d be moving ahead and selling the iPhone directly without any involvement from Apple. So, Crunchpad is dead but Fusion Garage has revealed Joojoo pad with the price tag of $499. Arrington's Crunchpad would have been around $299 with options. Fusion Garage claims that they were working on "browser as operating system" concept long before Arrington's arrival. And they are now battling it out in the court because one party is claiming no contract was drawn and very little has been inputted from Arrington and his team. Whatever the case may be, Fusion Garage to notify Arrington via email just days before the official launching of Crunchpad is suspicious. The reasons for the holdup can be read from Arrington's post. And there are three sides to the story--one from Arrington, one from Fusion Garage, and there's the real truth. And if the real truth involves holding out for more money, then the real victims of this tragedy are consumers who were looking forward to a device like this. Apple, the big corporation, would have raped us with Apple tablet at a price range of $800 to $1000. People would have continue to squint at iPod Touch and iPhone's small screen to stay within the spending limit of $150 to $400. The luxurious 12 inches of multi-touch screen dedicated for web experience at a price of $300 would have been the perfect kick start to get other giant, over-fed-with-our-money corporations to perk up and listen to our demands--produce affordable high-tech devices that don't SUCK! At the age of huge companies devouring small yet innovative, forward progressing inventions, I hope that this isn't the case. Who knows if some big Inc. arranged Crunchpad to be silenced. Maybe $300 was too low for other products to compete. Crunchpad certainly created many controversial moves by promising low price with everything-you-can-do gadget. And if Crunchpad is the victim of capitalism, then I am truly, truly sad... ...it could've been a contender...

Laptop Theft Preventive Measures
BuffaloHelp replied to longtimeago's topic in Security issues & Exploits
I've read making custom web cam supplemental program to use built in web cam to capture a picture and then send via FTP to waiting server when a laptop is stolen. To kickoff this program, basically a login screen (not the windows but a script ran after windows login will be a dummy login. But without the right password it would trigger the capturing program. And it will resume with Windows so that the thief would think he/she has bypass the password). So now, there's IP address, the face of thief who stolen the laptop and probably other information tied to this quick background program. But this requires a long wait and if the laptop is reformatted or wiped out, your program is not effective. I believe the better solution is in hardware. When no solution is perfect, you're hoping that the person who stole your laptop does not have the time or knowhow to disable the following hardware: GPS tracking device either via SMS or geotag. There are many free applications where hackers have used with Google map to tag away points using GPS receiver and etc. As GPS united are getting cheaper and smaller, you can implement the next hypothetical device easily. A simple battery powered or powered on when laptop powers on, with it's own SIM or micro SD chip to record the position vai GPS and stores it as cvs or whatever. And the first chance the internet is connected it uploads the data to designated place. Since it stores its own place, i.e. micro SD card, it will not be wiped out when the hard drive is restored. When this device is merged with one of onboard USB, it will appear and reappear as "media drive" even after the restore. And similar to Sandisk's U3 launch, it can contain delayed autoexecuting, uploading script. This would be a cheaper solution. The next evolution is to broadcast GPS coordinates all the time. This solution will drain laptop's battery but it's a trade off. And only the person who know's the GPS MAC address or signal will know the signature and track the device that's embedded to the laptop. Anyway, if you have this much of time to develop it I would suggest looking into Lojack for laptops. It's already done and it doesn't cost that much. Right now, it's about $25 to $35 dollars a year. -
Webpage Display Changes Each Time I Refresh In Firefox
BuffaloHelp replied to ramvis's topic in Websites and Web Designing
What if it's \n or \r character that you didn't intend to happen? Are you creating each input field by doing some script and then echoing it, like "show first pulldown box" then "show second pulldown box" etc? I think as it executes it inserts unwanted new line or next line character. But I cannot tell any further without seeing the entire code. When I simply copied the source code and viewed, it does not alter every time I refresh the page. That tells me that you are doing some kind of loop or function to draw each pulldown. If you want to do it that way, try putting each loop or function as a variable. So, $search = first pulldown box (function to draw) $search.= second pulldown box $search.= third pulldown box etc... and at the end, just echo $search. This way, it's drawing each function/loop at once, instead of showing one by one. Again, I have to assume because I don't see the entire code. Wait...hold on. After reviewing with other browser I have this screen shot The top screenshot is from Firefox. Notice the unknown image/object appears with your page. It's not part of a tag or image. What is it? The bottom scrrenshot is from IE7. Your css is way off. Looks like you have to show us the entire code for us to see what's really going on. -
Now Own A Datacenter Using Shared Hosting! yep for real..
BuffaloHelp replied to BCD's topic in Art & Creativity
BCD, you may be on the borderline on forum rules and nothing has been violated. But seriously, why would you come to Xisto forum, which provides our own hosting and advertise/sell hosting services, and put promote another hosting company? If you are posting reviews of that service after X amount of months, years you had service with them I would understand that as another website/company review. But if you are advertising another hosting company in the forum which provides its own hosting services, your action simply boils down to one thing--you are luring customers to another hosting provider. If you are not satisfied with Xisto kindly leave our forum as our own community. There's no need to plaster competitor's advertisement in our forum. -
Cutenews Continues To Deteriorate HTML Function Gone
BuffaloHelp replied to Misanthrope's topic in Web Hosting Support
Using FTP or cPanel, go topublic_html/cutenews.1.4.5/cutenews/dataFind config.php and change permission to 777.There's no real reason to upgrade, as far as I know, to v1.4.6 except if you have members registering to your website or allow SEARCH function, then there were exploits which allows regular members to gain as administrative level and really mess things with your cutenews.I believe I reminded all v.1.4.5 users to disable search.php found in public_html/cutenews.1.4.5/cutenews/search.php to something like search.bak or search.php.bak when the exploit was reported.Don't trust 100% what I have to say, but when I did that to one of my sites I have not had any incidence after the renaming. But just because my site is alright it does not mean it's secure. Go with your gut feeling if you should upgrade your CMS. -
Cutenews Continues To Deteriorate HTML Function Gone
BuffaloHelp replied to Misanthrope's topic in Web Hosting Support
First issue, check to see if you can write to config.php. This is noted when you log in. You'll see it at the bottom right. If you see NO then you must use FTP or cPanel to make config.php to CHMOD 777. This should solve your problem.Upgrading to v1.4.6 or UTF-8 are very easy. Both forums, cutephp and UTF-8, have written step by step instruction how to upgrade.Basically, Cutenews has few files you really need to keep: *.tpl (that's any template you built for your cutenews for your site. If you have not built any then don't need to save), comment.txt (if you have comments), news.txt, category.db.php, users.db.php, cat.num.php.When in doubt, download the entire DATA and UPIMAGES from your cutenews directory. If anything goes wrong you can simply upload your downloaded backup. -
Anyone noticed this countdown from Google lately? It only appears when you click on "I'm Feeling Lucky" without any search term entered. Just click the button. My image shown is seconds that leads up to New Year, 2010. The question isn't about why it is counting down to New Year but is google going to launch, reveal something in 2010? With google's marketing ways anything goes.
