  1. Actually, as far as I know, they are poisonous, it's just not as potent as needed to kill people. It's like claiming tranquilizers aren't effective against elephants because x amount will take down a human but not the elephant. It all deals with how potent it is and how much is injected.
  2. I'm going to agree with the Wikipedia stuff. A massive difference between books and Wikipedia is that while books cite their information as well, it's usually much harder to find information (as you then have to find the books). With Wikipedia, though, you simply click the link beside the information and you're instantly taken to the source. There's also the benefit of Wikipedia being edited by millions of people, whereas books have a writer or two and editors. You basically have to trust that the book's author(s) interpreted the information they read properly, as well as put it into their own words properly. With Wikipedia, and the ability to make edits, it opens the doors for others to give their own input. And lastly, there's also the difference between updated information and non-updated. With traditional books, information can't be updated without new book releases. With Wikipedia, things can be added in real-time as they're happening. Overall, regardless of the format there's definitely going to be a lot of bias, but I think the more people that are contributing to something, the less bias there is when looking at it as a big picture.
  3. This is completely true. When it really comes down to it, the only real thing Apple has that others don't, at least as far as I know, is the "retina display." Other than this, it's purely marketing. You could also throw in the fact that all Apple devices work together, creating a system of unity, and therefore making it an all-in-one setup, but in terms of its usefulness, I find it as going a bit overboard.
  4. I like engineering from a learning perspective (as it helps learn how so many things work, and it really shows that most things can be resolved through math), but I'm not too good at it! So many different formulas to remember, and keeping in mind subtle differences between them is rough.
  5. I'd love to see more tutorials around here as well, but like Velma said, please don't copy them from others. If you need an idea on how to create your own, take the subject at hand (let's say it was how to draw a frog in Photoshop) and then alter it (to show how to draw a horse in Photoshop). Now you can basically still use the information, while completely altering the tutorial, as well as the end result. As a writer, nothing irritates me more than plagiarism though.
  6. This is far from being the truth. As far as I know, giving false information would just be a civil suit, not criminal (I'm not an attorney but as far as I know this is true). As for providing research data, you could always skew that as well (and many companies do). You more or less have to use the old saying, "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is."
  7. You'd set the Joomla site up the same as any other site -- copy the files over to the hosting account, then just visit the Index and go through the install process. You'll need to make a database on the host first (which is different depending on what WHM software they're using). As for the second question, I have no idea what you're asking.
  8. Neat program. I didn't realize Comodo does personal firewalls, but I knew they do SSL certificates and stuff for websites. And since they're trusted by browsers/companies, I guess their personal software should be dependable too!
  9. How can you tell how old it is? It looks almost like a normal bike to me...
  10. I'll give a +1 for ZoneAlarm as well. I used them many years ago and loved the control you have over the firewall. It might be problematic for some though (IIRC the default setting was to ask before letting any program access the Internet) but that's what I loved about it! It's definitely better than the built-in firewall for Windows.
  11. I really couldn't get into using the notifier. I just leave up a browser now and wait for it to say "Inbox (1)" or whatever, lol. I don't remember what I didn't like about the desktop notifier but whatever it was, it annoyed me.
  12. One of the reasons people do use it is for business stuff. I've noticed a lot of web hosts and game publishers now use it to keep people 100% up-to-date about outages and such. Really, you can do that via Facebook as well though.
  13. Thanks! Normally the speed/usage wouldn't be too big of an issue for me but when it comes to gaming via WINE, even small differences can go a long ways. Wish we could just get true DirectX already!
  14. I find Twitter hard to get into as well, just because of how it works. I get why people use it, it just doesn't seem like something that has enough benefit for me. I guess it's how passive it is, in that you're just sending small messages back and forth (assuming you get responses) but have no real goal in mind.
  15. As Jlhaslip said, I'd definitely go with MySQL (or any database but MySQL is free) and PHP. It wouldn't be too hard to implement these either, but when it comes to the login part you'll want to make sure it's very secure (checking input, cutting down on sql injections, etc.). The others are pretty simple to handle.
  16. 2-seaters are a hard one for most people, as it definitely does limit what you can do with it. Luckily though if you're single or just don't have kids, they have decent trunk room for traveling. I drive a Miata, which is significantly smaller and more compact. If I want to travel with it and have someone else, we can fit about one backpack in the trunk for each of us (and it can't be overstuffed, lol).
  17. I haven't run Ubuntu since 11.04 (as I'm a gamer) but am looking into the possibility yet again (I do so every few months, hoping there's changes in regards to gaming ability). I'd like to hear how well 12.10 runs for you though in comparison to 9.04. Especially when it comes to the base RAM and CPU usage. I know there's been a lot of improvements/additions but I'm a bit worried about that also including a lot of additional overhead.
  18. This is very true as well, and we see it every day in the gaming/technology atmosphere (I guess maybe because people who are interested in them are more technologically able). What I've noticed is that in the majority of cases, when you find a post (whether on forums, a blog, etc.) about a product or service, they're usually negative. The argument for this is that the happy customers are more interested in utilizing said service/product than writing about it, while the unhappy ones are more interested in keeping others away. I've seen a lot of cases where the overall image of something is skewed greatly because all you find when you look at reviews are the negative, and yet they only represent the minority (and a very small piece of that).
  19. I could help with recommendations as well if I knew more about what you want to track. For example, are you wanting to track charts, random notes, organized data, etc.?
  20. Neat list here! These are awesome starting points for building new sites faster than doing it from scratch. You put "oswd" up there twice though (#5 and #11),
  21. Pretty neat programs here. I didn't even realize there was a way to back up cell phone data. I think it could come in real use, as I know many people that forget to export numbers to their SIM card, or forget to import them. It's neat having the ability to keep everything secure, as you never know what may happen to your cell!
  22. Very nice little guide here. I would like to chime in on a couple things though.1) Instead of XAMPP, I use WAMP. I just find it "better." There are multiple other stacks that can be used for web development as well.2) I'll toss out a vote for Filezilla as well, as this is what I use. It's simple to use and has a lot of options for those who are more savvy.3) You brought up the freeware photo editor but didn't give examples. For this, I'd recommend going with GIMP, although it may take a while to get used to.
  23. Two things here: 1) The post about the average user only spending a few minutes a day was many months ago. Google+ has changed a lot since then, so this data has more than likely also changed. 2) While Google can change rankings in their search engine, Facebook is well-known by those who are computer literate and those who aren't so much. Along with this, people are so dependent upon FB that they aren't searching for another one, so the rankings in Google are irrelevant. Most people that use FB use it because of word-of-mouth.
  24. Hey, thanks for the responses. I've been extremely ill lately so haven't been able to work on the project. I'm not quite to the "showing" stage yet but am getting very close. Once I'm there, I'll definitely share a link and more information about what I'm looking for.
  25. Awesome little tutorial, though I was confused by "virtual hosts." I thought this meant like how to set up subdomains.Do you happen to be able to write up a tutorial on how to do that, "automatically" if possible? I'm working on a project that deals with subdomains and I'd like users to be able to set up their own instead of having to manually edit the configuration files all the time.
