Ubuntu+Puppy noobTaking The Linux PlungeJust thought I'd chime in here being an eager linux noob myself. I know this thread is old but anyone else that comes across this the way I did may benifit. And posting without signup is the way it should be. Anyway I have Ubuntu 8.?? Interpid running on a Compaq Presario with a 900 mhz Duron with 768 MB RAM and I would seriously not want to go any lower than that as far as specs go. I don't know how the original poster fared, but that system must have taken a good long time to boot, and dragged quite a bit once it was running. Especially with Gnome. I don't really know how much an X window manager would have sped thing up but it would probbably help. KDE would help but its not as light as X as far as I have read. I also have the same Ubuntu dual booting with XP on an IBM T41 Thinkpad - 1.6 mhz with 1.5 gigs of RAM. That macine humms along quite nicely. I'm pretty sure I can get all the Compiz/Beryl goodies running on the IBM as well, but havn't tried yet. I know that stuff wont go on my older Compaq...Not enough video ram. I would like to add that XP was already there, and I had a free partition set aside for just this purpose, but aside from that Ubuntu saw XP there and automatically added it to GRUB (it may have asked me to choose a name for it but that was it) NO WORK AT ALL TO GET IT DUAL BOOTING ! ...Great job Ubuntu. I also have Puppy v3 (v4 was a no go) running on a seriously old Compaq Armada 1492 DMT laptop - P1 and 96 MB of ram, which is alot nicer than Vector Linux Lite that I tried first IMHO. Let me just say that Puppy seems very feature rich for how small it is...It makes me wonder what exactly is so BIG in the full size distros !? Still some snags getting the wireless working, but Puppy has very nice Utilities for wireless/network config, and you can load driver modules in GUI mode...It even asked me if I wanted to throw a Windows driver in a ndiswrapper. Well I'll wrap it up here with a few console commands I learned, that the original poster was talking about (a year and a half ago, I know, but this is where I chose to spill) to run just one command as root ----- # sudo (followed by command) to login as root ---------------------- # sudo -I iwconfig, iwpriv, iwlist, all give you good wireless configuration info, and if you type one of those three commands followed by help, it will tell you more on how to use them. I also got screwed by Reservation Rewards via Buy.Com. I never signed up for anything or authorized a $12 per month purchase. I just called and canceled, they agreed to refund my $ after an argument with the person on the phone. This is ridiculous and as far as I'm concerned, downright robbery.

my 2 centsI Hate WiggersOk I'm white I live in the south I grew up around black people and have many black friends. I'm in high school right now, the school I go to now is like 60% white 40% black. But from kindergarten to the eighth grade I went to an all black school. Like I said this is the dirty south so everyone would wear baggy jeans and polo shirts or white tees and white ones with a white hat cocked to the side you know what I'm saying so thats just how I grew up. Since at home my family and neighbors have white accents, I can freely switch between a southern black accent and white accent (btwI know theres no such thing as a "black accent" or "white accent," you know what I'm talking about so don't call me racist.) I mean, I just thought that was normal and how everyone dressed talked and acted, until I switched to this school.Now one day I looked in the mirror and realized what a dumbass I looked like. I have since switched my style to be a little whiter (but nott overbearingly white and NEVER prep goth or emo [one more thing: there is nothing inherently wrong with goths and emos, I just don't like the dress or the music]) Oh yeah and like that guy said I can call some of my black friends *BLEEP* and they don't care. I don't say it much though, just to show love. I don't know about you guys but I think theres no such thing as a racist word, there are only racist people. I mean, I'm pretty sure most of you could say "I'm just chillin my *BLEEP*" at least once to your black friends and youd be ok, cuz if theyre really your friends then they know youre not racist. I'm sick of people saying "if you say the and word to any black person ever youll get your a$$ kicked." That my friend is racist by it self. I mean come on, its 2009, half the white people voted for Obama, black people know we have never owned slaves or hung a black dude from a tree. Descriptive Title for Opinion/Feedback911 Text Messagingso many people are missing the point of being in a situation where maybe you could silently text out help, but speaking even in the quietest whisper could give your position away. I think it is a great idea, and came here after thinking about a text message 911 service exactly for those situations. Now I do agree that it would almost always be better to speak to someone, because its faster and clearer (especially if your a young person and you text in some crazy text language that no adult working at a response center would understand), but it remains a great idea for above said situation. My parents used to be pretty loose with my grades, but still pretty strict compared to normal standards.In elementary school, when I got below 100, they would say work harder but never any outright praise. Wen I do get a 100, they're like okay w.E. In middle school, if I didn't get above a 95, they would chastise me. Conversations would turn hours long with them. They would lead everything to the internet. My dad installed an Ultra VNC suite and used Remote Desktop Connection to spy on me. I didn't know how to block them but learned to uninstall his programs and he would be really angry. My dad's a hypocrite too. Especially in eating. He always says how wen I see a food I like, I eat like crazy. When he sees steak, he's like a ***ing wolf. My parents think they're always rite.Whenever my mom gives me a suggestion like, go read a textbook. If I say no, she gets mad angry then I have to do it anyways. In high school, things started going downhill. My bio teacher had this heavy *bottom* accent and gave us 3 pages of notes average a day. I always got bored in her class and got like 70s. They always say how much internet I use. My dad cut off my connection and only gives it to me when he's home and they say how much computer I use, even though my friends uses twice as much.
